My roommate, who's from the UAE, has told me that it's a weird mixture of the two. We've talked quite a bit about our religions, sharing interpretations of the same story, swapping badass stories from each culture, etc.
The gist is that while she was his wife, their relationship was more father and daughter than man and woman. The fact that he married her is a product of the culture of the time. Many gods have their own mini planets orbiting the world, however the real moons(that shine) are the homes of two gods that compete for the love of the Sun Goddess, who is also the goddess of war, so their devout followers battle each other in ritual combat whenever they come across each other. During the day they reign their worlds and gather the suns energy while at night they spread the suns light to the world, competing with each other who will shine brightest. A solar eclipse happens when the sun goddess decides to pay one of them a visit that usually results in godly fucking. A lunar eclipse means that one of them is invading the others world.
In my setting, the planets and stellar bodies are all Gods. The people say things like 'By the Bodies!" and such.
Moons are defeated, enslaved, castrated/etc. Gods that now orbit their conqueror. The setting takes place on a large planet with 4 moons, because the planet God is a powerful warrior.
In general moon Gods just try to get revenge on the planet that defeated and humiliated them. Secret moon cults that terrorize the populace, werewolf monsters, etc.
Not terribly original but just something interesting to make Moons stand out.
