so what did the hobbit change?

Put them on square bases and play kings of war. Or dragon rampant.

I was wondering that myself, since I just found a box of Moria Goblin I bought years ago and just now want to get around to painting.

Are you UK or US based?

New rulebook made a few alterations. New Heroic Actions, special rules for different kind of weapons, buffs to monsters, etc. but at the end of the day it plays pretty similarly to how it always did. Army building has changed slightly to prevent horde spam.

You can pick up a small copy of the rulebook relatively cheaply on eBay from the starter set
>>
>>46287503
i am glad they changed horde spam a bit, i always liked mounted and monsters more.

>>46285784
Has there ever been a movie tie-in game with staying power? Like once the hype is gone from the movie there are still a decent sized group still playing Jaws: The TTRPG

I would argue Star Wars doesn't count since it's been actively shilled all along
>>
UK has an active tourney scene.
US does too, but it is obviously a lot more spread out so may be more awkward for you.

Check out GBHL Youtube channel or the sister channels if you are interested.
>>
>>46285784
Surprisingly, we can actually expect more stuff from GW for the range. They hired new Middle-Earth Sculptors and Writers for their Specialist Games Studio a few months back.
Plus they've started up the SBG Throne of Skulls Tourneys again.
We can expect some board games with SBG usable models at some point.

Here you can find the new rulebook.

Not many changes, I'll try to list them here off the top of my head:

'In the way' tests now have a table where the type of object can decrease or increase chances of hitting.

You can no longer support spears with pikes, instead if you want the tripple support you need to have 2 pikes.

Spells now have a channeled version which you can trigger by spending might.

Different types of hand weapons allow you to strike differently in a fight.

Monsters have an option to use special attacks now when they win a fight.

Minor changes to equipment.

That's all I remember. If you have Tabletop Simulator or live in London we can get a game in but otherwise it's a dead game.
>>
>>46291064
It wouldn't be the most stupid thing than GW has done this month. Also the most posible thing to happen is than they do an over priced mess than is launched barely tested.
>>
>>46291064
>>46289641
Actually, the head of the new middle earth development team is Adam Troke. He posts quite frequently on the facebook page. curiously, he and the middle earth team are going to be doing a Q&A session during the LOTR throne of skulls next week.
>>
>>46285646
Google "one-ring.co.uk" for the most active website, or even better, check out the Great British Hobbit League. Quite a lot of people playing.

Love your conversions btw.

>>46287698
LotR still sold well till they tried to force War of the Ring down our throats, a period during which they sidelined the skirmish game. Then they starting seriously racking up prices, till the once cheapest range became one, or the, most expensive.

After the movies they released plenty of interesting stuff like a Harad supplement (now one of the most played armies)

i actually bought the war of the ring rule book and the trays where kind of cheap so i got those to. i now have a war of the ring army i have played with once.

also when did they crack up prices? the old wargriders are still 23 euro for 6 cavalry units which seems cheap considering. (its also the price i can remember)
>>
>>46292162
They strangled the 2nd hand market. You can get the miniatures only through GW website nowadays.

Not to mention that the boxes used to have 24 guys.

oh i have them painted, i was referring to converting 7 cave trolls.

i sadly dont have painted version photos of all of them for some reason.

also i didnt really paint them that well, this was more a conversion project and i just decided i should get some drybrush skills and and just drybrushed everything.

i did find a failed warg captain.
>>
>>46292162
The boxes used to have 24 guys for 15 pounds. Nowadays it's 12 guys for 20 pounds. and that's the cheap ones, the new Hobbit armies have basic troops costing 15 pounds per 3 of them, and fucking finecast instead of plastic.

Again, lovely conversions.

y your right,

i only looked at the wild warg and warg rider kits, those have not changed.

why would they do this. lotr was even though it could get complicated and tactical at its base very kids friendly and fun to play. especially because they could actually buy 24 minis in 1 box and have an army ready.

i refuse to believe this decisions did not lose them money

>Then they starting seriously racking up prices, till the once cheapest range became one, or the, most expensive.
This is hilariously wrong. Its true that, compared to the old LotR prices, the price is now quite expensive. But a LotR army will cost you maybe 25% of a 40k or Fantasy army.

and olibgatory "i see you" post. But i second about the great british hobbit league. both on facebook and youtube. by far the biggest and most active community.
>>
>>46293373
Truth. the new hobbit stuff is expensive, but the army sizes are a fraction of what they are for 40k or fantasy.
>>
>>46293410
Do they allow you to play with 3rd party miniatures?
>>
http://unpluggedgames.co.uk/features/blood-dice-and-darkness-how-warhammer-defined-gaming-for-a-generation/

Interesting article for you to read, especially the last couple of paragraphs. Rick suggests that they only agreed to take on the project to prevent another company from doing so and that incompetence prevented them from effectively dealing with the decline of the interest.
>>
>>46293440
eh, they can be kind of snippy. not elitist, but getting hold of most stuff isnt' that hard. easiest thing is just to ask them. but they're mostly cool guys
>>
>>46293468
>
i also heard that the development staff essentially threatened a walk out if they didn't get it. back when it wasn't so corporate, they weren't going to let the most important fantasy story walk out the door.
>>
>>46293440
What this guy said >>46293483

They do say themselves that they can be quite elitist. At least two of the main hosts publicly say that they don't like playing against people using official models. Not to the point that they would refuse to play against you tho.

It really just comes down to the group/tournament you are attending. Casual groups have no issue, some tournies do to keep things simpler. With more and more models going OOP they do acknowledge that they may have no choice but to allow proxies.
>>
oh and i should shamelessly plug here. if you're in the uk, you should look up orcward battles. the guy there can get stuff from gw for 20% off direct price.
>>
>>46292872
Indeed, been eyeing them for a long time now.

>>46293373
Yeah. Take a look at the Mirkwood, Dale or Gundabad. 15 quid for 3 dudes. Only the old, low count ones like Rivendell remain relatively cheap.

>>46293440
Some idiots, but I'd say most won't have a problem with it. There are plenty of conversions based off 3rd aprty minis, or stand ins, without any conversion involved, being thrown around in both the one-ring and the FB groups.

>>46293515
I wonder what became of those kind souls. I don't think they are involved in the not!Space Marines and lifeless duardin debacle.
>>
>>46293627
I heard of this guy long ago, but never checked.

Is he legit? I mean, timely delivery? No "two months later" shenanigans?
>>
>>46293723
Yeah. Take a look at the Mirkwood, Dale or Gundabad. 15 quid for 3 dudes. Only the old, low count ones like Rivendell remain relatively cheap.

Fair. They are a bit of a special case tho. Anything that wasn't made for the first Hobbit movie back when there were only meant to be two were completely phoned in due to the reception to the movies. Support up until the barrel sequence was great. Unfortunately it didn't reinvigorate the hobby as they expected it would so they didn't feel they could make their money back on any more plastic moulds. Hell, Battle of the Five Armies didn't even get a full release. Two entire armies got nothing, and the three that did have limited options.

Can see them releasing another Battle of the Five Armies board game thing that adds to this.

SO how should I get in touch? Do I just join the group on facebook?

As far as the Perry Mercs go I can't recommend them enough. There is so much stuff in this box. You can squeeze 20 pikemen or men with a variety of polearms out of that little box. Crossbow options, two command spures, handguns, plenty of spare heads. Fantastic quality.
>>
>>46293723
most have gone probably. i do remember one of the higher ups involved, for the life of me i can't remember who, said in a white dwarf that the reason so many models were just one or two pieces was because he was sick of the size and complicated minis coming out for 40k and fantasy. i think it may have been alessio actually.
>>
>>46293831
oh he's very legit. i always order from him now and he'll get the stuff within two weeks usually. and he's an active user on gbhl facebook page. so you can talk to him directly
>>
>>46293848
indeed just join the group. there's also a specific facebook trade group as well. so it's easier to hunt models down.
>>
>>46293846
The thing is, a few months back a GW rep said that the sales of the Hobbit had been above expectations, and they just hired new sculptors and game designers just for The Hobbit.

So the money must still be worth it, considering that on top of that they must have paid for the renewal of the licence.

I hope we get a proper BotFA release.

I always missed having a bit more modularity in the LotR sculpts.
Even though the community has been pumping out amazing simple but effective conversions (cloaks, fur, coifs, head swaps) I can't help but feel that it is the little push that would have taken the lotr range from great to amazing.
