The entire point of using elves and dwarves is so they are familiar and do not really need explaining. Calling them elves or dwarves when they are not is daft. So don't act self righteous when a valid criticism is brought up.

I made my elves into deer people. They were still tall and fair, but skinnier than normal, with long faces, doe eyes and antlers on the males. The ears were also deer-like, and slightly fuzzy.

I'm actually a wee bit concerned on the opposite end of the spectrum with a few of my races, to be honest; f'r instance, my gnomes are around nine to twelve inches tall, can leap about four or five times their height and fight by slamming their opponents with their thick-boned foreheads (or their ancestral pointed hats, which are more akin to wooden, stone or metal helms lined with felt or cloth).
Or my trolls, or rather trüls, which are based on old Scandinavian stories and are more loud, boisterous, energetic, party animals than dull-witted brutes - or as one of my friends described them, like taking jägers from Girl Genius and making them seven feet tall, blue, beefy and giving them horns and lion-tails.
Or again, my goblins, which look like if you took a sphinx cat, stretched it out to look vaguely like a human, then starved it until it almost looked like a walking corpse, and often as not covered what's left in tattoos, piercings and layers of cloth like a middle-eastern street thug. Then, on top of all that, give them the attitude of a Ferengi, where absolutely everything in this world - goods, services, loyalty, love, concepts, life, everything - has a monetary price, and a negotiable value.
Basically, I keep wondering if I'm pushing just how far I'm carrying these names, and if I shouldn't be considering changing their names to something at least a bit more unique.

There's nothing wrong with deviating from the norm, or gimmicking it a bit for the sake of variation – that's where all the stock fantasy races came from. Go make a thread complaining about gnomes not being earth elementals, or dwarfs not being lithe earth maggots that turn to stone in sunlight, if you're so bothered by this. It's a case of "stop liking what I don't like" and you fucking know it. Most of you aren't even a generation away from kobolds getting transformed from mischievous house/ship/mine sprites into fucking lizards, so sit down and shut up.
Using common tropes as a touchstone for players to understand your world is often a better alternative than demanding they study the OC donut steel lore you've made up and memorize the native names and nuances of every race. It's ok if you have the right players, but most people (even on /tg/) aren't into that, even though the same players might enjoy novelties that deviate from the standard mode.
I'd understand the hate if suddenly all media began depicting dwarfs as bearded dogs or some shit like that, but as it is this sort of thing is just gimmicking tropes for a little variation and harmless fun.fuck kobolds though

I grew up (as did many others) with stories of kobolds being mischievous little sprites, but then someone decided they wanted to use the name for an almost completely different race of lizard people. Now traditional kobolds are nearly extinct, while the unrelated pretenders are thriving.
Why did they have to "steal" the name for their snowflake race? Why did they have to piggyback off an established trope? It's just a lizard, it doesn't look anything like a kobold.Do you see the hypocrisy?
I think it's a very good analogue to what people are complaining about here – with the difference being that the ocdonutsteel race has actually snuffed the original out of existence, and yet most of the board cherishes and adores it nonetheless... while giving others crap for introducing comparatively minor variations on other races.
Personally, I don't like the new kobolds, but it's hardly my right to shit on the people who do.

Like I said, I don't like modern kobolds, but it's a personal preference. I don't project it on others, because I'm not an asshole – I have no right to tell them they can't like X because it's different to the "normal" X I grew up with.
If you are unable to recognize the hypocrisy in accepting kobolds but rejecting "variant" elves/dwarfs/orcs etc., then I don't know what else to say. You're making a special exception for yourself while undertaking a crusade against all others who do the same.
