What's up with the Enslaver plague? Were they daemons or something else entirely?

If it comes from the warp it's a Daemon
Enslavers are just Daemons that aren't aligned with any god

Wrong.

The Enslavers are physical creatures with flesh and blood. They are not made from emotional energy. They can exist naturally in real space with no issue.

They only spend a part of their lives in the Warp. This suggests that they are not native to the Warp.

The lore says they came about because of the War in Heaven, though.

Proto-daemons, if you like. At least going by the fluff in which the Enslaver plague was a thing.

Their original Rogue Trader entry, for comparison.

They were among the Warp Horrors that were unleashed by the disturbance of the Warp but they are not "daemons" nor really "warp beings".

Daemons and Warp beings cannot exist naturally in real space.

"proto-daemons"? No, they are not. Daemons are energy beings. Enslavers are physical creatures.

Trazyn has an ossified corpse of one them in his collection. Daemons don't leave behind corpses (usually).

Yeah, usually. On the other hand, Kor'sarro Khan took the Daemon Prince Voldorius's head home with him to Chogoris, the Grey Knights keep another Daemon Prince trapped inside his skull in their lunchroom, and every aspiring Paladin has to come back with a trophy from one of each Chaos God's Heralds.

An Enslaver is a kind of alien species which either migrated to, or natively dwells in the warp.

They are not formed from warp energy and have material bodies. Which does mean that when one is killed, it dies.

It's not really that clear-cut. They were first described in Rogue Trader as living in and travelling through the warp, with nothing in particular to suggest they were actually born from it, true. However, the 3E Necron codex and the rulebook which followed it (pic related) went on about warp entities being formed from spirits and emotion, then simply named Enslavers among them. No "Oh btw these Enslavers are totally different from all those other warp things we were just talking about", only "This is how warp entities are made, and Enslavers are one type of them".

>Sentient energies and other immaterial lifeforms dwell within it; creatures formed from and sustained by the shifting energies of the Warp prowling the ether as sharks prowl the ocean. Emotions given form, these sentient entities range from gibbering dream-forms to ancient and terrible gods. Diverse and multifarious, at best they are mindless, but the vast majority are predatory and extremely hostile. Mankind has attempted to classify some of those that haunt the Warp - the Vampyre and wasp-like Psychneuein, the Astral Spectre, the bloated Enslaver - but attempting to impose logic on Warp entities is a fool's errand.

To be honest, perhaps that last bit is ultimately all that needs to be said on the matter.

Ah, true enough.

Still, they're a different breed of beast to many warp entities.

I kind of like to imagine the psychneuen as a kind of war in heaven weapon which went feral when the Old Ones died out.

i guess they work like an algal bloom, if the warp gets too fucked up they start multiplying like crazy and mindrape everyone
