you can add things and discuss those things.

I'll start: the world was originally shaped by five sages, one of earth, one of water, one of fire, one of wood and one of metal.

Fine, I'll take the bait.

This world's magic system runs on alchemy.
>>
There is a small faction that abhors magic and all it stands for and prefers instead to focus on clockwork machinery and augmentation. They will occasionally attack buildings of magical import, such as schools, libraries or places of worship and are considered terrorists.

The dominant race in the setting is Kobolds (named the Shahir), who first learned the Alchemical Magic from the Dragons, who have since all ascended into a higher plane and become the gods of the setting both good and evil

Due to a war, long in the past. Where worshippers of the evil dragon, Gethorath Bringer of Black Rain, alchemy is sticky restricted to government officials and keepers of the peace

Fuck, sorry I'm a bit drunk.
Essentially
> Evil worshipers staged a long bloody year war which caused generations to be lost
> Magic now tightly regulated
> Limited to government officials and the police force/military
> Children found to have magic capability are taken from their family and sent to a monastery

Urbanization and the steady restriction of magic to the general populace outside of "protection" has led to an increase in urban crime and a growing focus on non-magical technological innovation

This means this group:
>>46235891
although still a terrorist organization might be seeing more support, and is also leading to a movement from wide subsistence farming to wider crafting practices alongside very early industrialization

Farming however is becoming a problem with the burgeoning populations, food is becoming scarce and the lack of "civic magics" to aid in non "protection" based services means things aren't getting much better with time. Farmlands are becoming barren as more and more displaced farmers flee the countryside to seek work and what little food there is in the cities, seeing a growing underclass and "squalor towns" made up of tents

The wasting farmland is slowly turning to wasteland, and it is uncertain if this is due to some dark force or not... Regardless, the vast bounty of a far off continent draws the attention of many

The Orcs of the setting are anything but evil killing machines, their society has long been focused around the arts and story-telling. They are often the most sophisticated, artistically inclined and naturally urban of all the races.

They also were the first race to come up with the idea of banking and are now quite rich even though they are in the minority

The Dragons and the Sages are not the same. In fact, the energies released during the Dragon's ascension left many parts of the world imbalanced elementally.

This mainly took the form of new and mystical natural resources, thankfully.

Once the Industrial Revolution hit, new processes for making use of these resources were quickly developed, and technology soared.

However, this led to a series of wars as nations attempted to secure these resources from their rivals.
>>

Those kobolds mutate, becoming more wild and feral as they wage a brutal guerrilla war against the gnolls.

Some of them have become unruly and insubordinate towards the higher-ups. Others have cut off contact entirely, forming nightmarish tribes that leave only gore and corpses behind.

Spider-like beings with legs longer than skyscrapers slowly wander the world at a turtles pace. They have never been observed eating or interacting with each other at all. Aparently all they do is walk around very slowly.
Their legs are long enough that they can walk across the ocean without sinking. Their footsteps would be dangerous if they were not so slow and predictable. They are covered in thick shaggy fur that is full of plants and animals.
Killing one of these beings is usually a bad idea, because suddenly an entire ecosystem of creatures is suddenly released onto the ground.
This world has no moon, and these huge beings serve as the day/night cycle for the world, though Day/Night can be incredibly erratic since the Spider Walkers might follow set paths as they walk in a straight line across the globe, but one might not show up every 12-24 hours.

What do giant spiders have to do with a day/night cycle?

The whole basis of a day/night cycle is the sun.

No moon simply means the tides are non-existent and geography is screwed up, and there ain't no lunar calendar or anything, but unless the sun also doesn't exist (which means there's no life) the spiders got nothing to do with calendars.

Still liking the rest of the spider idea though.
>>
>>46246721
Whoops, I see what you mean. What I meant was they're big enough to blot out the sun during the day if one was near you.
Let's say there used to be a moon, but now it's rubble do to a huge impact. The Giant Spider are strong enough to survive the constant threat of falling moon fragments, so lots of animals compete to live underneath the creature. Although asteroid impacts are a constant threat, the metals provided from the moon and the metal meteor that struck it help fuel the Industrial Revolution.
>>
>>46246662
Not sure I like the Day/Night cycle thing, but I really like the idea of these colossal creatures just milling about real slowly across the planet.

Hell, I'd be willing to bet there are nomads that cling to the thing to reach new grounds.

Underneath the shaggy spiders body is a multitude of locks of fur caked with various kinds of plant and fungus. I suggest flying fox batfolk for the Underfolk.
>>46247142
Dwarves work well. The tops of the spiders accumulate a lot of debris from the moon, and there is certainly more than gold in those hills.
The hard part is getting up to the top. These spiders would be so big that meteors don't have much of a chance to burn up before they land on their backs. Dwarves mining the tops of the spiders would have to bring oxygen with them.

>>46247284
>>46247142
Should dwarves actually try to climb the spiders, or use rockets to land on top?

The moon fragments that don't hit the spiders are intercepted by each nation's array of alchemically-enhanced cannons.

These cannons also help maintain the balance of power, since they can also hit other cities with relative impunity.

If war were to break out however, these cannons would work like the Paris Gun - can't hit anything that ain't the size of a city.
>>
>>46247300
Climbing. There ain't enough space for proper rocketry anyway.
>>
>>46247341
Nice. Each Element should have a magical way of taking out or defending against meteors. Are factions divided between alchemical types or do all factions have a mix of specialists?
I also think that Metal alchemy should include magnetism as a power besides simply shaping metal.

In this setting, dwarves don't need to breath and (if this idea is supported, can motherfucking fly) because they are actually the descendants of the long lost "Air Sage" who has been forgotten due to some great division between the sages long ago, and now the Dwarves revere this forgotten sage as their one true god (maybe his hidden slumbering body is still hidden in the middle of one of the giant spiders, and that is why the dwarves day in and day out dig to find and re-awaken the sage)

>>
>>46247513
I like it. How about they fly by spinning themselves into little tornados by using magic winged pickaxes?
>>
>>46247488
All factions have a mix of specialists, and the division between anti-meteor defense methods is because of economics/population/religion etc.

However, since the elves oppose using magic, they're the ones most devastated by the moon fragments. And, since the spiders are the only proper shelter, they figure heavily into elven society and culture.
>>
>>46247686
Meaning the airbender dwarves and the elves have a natural rivalry since they both depend on the Spider Things and both are territorial about them, dwarves on top, elves on bottom (as it should be)
>>
>>46247761
Increase the animosity, in order to claim land and create stability the elves have actually cut down some of the spiders, and then mined out the bodies to create mountainous homes.

Humans are overall peacful agrarian creatures. The only exception is the Rutherlach Commonwealth, a semi-industrial nation spanning through several Mountain Ranges and Highlands in the North-East. The Commonwealth has just come out of a crippling war against the Gnoll hordes, barely victorious.
After the war, the Commonwealth was financially ruined and on the brink of starvation. This situation was used by the Revolutionary Syndicalist National Union to start a revolution and seize the power from the Earth-bending nobles caste which previously ruled over the Commonwealth through a House of Lords and elected Prince-General.
The new regime has brought many changes to the people of Rutherlach.

The world has defined edges, yes, but the "land and sea" part of it only extends so far.

What is outside wasn't shaped by the Sages...it's uneven lumps of elements churning and reacting. Not much lives there, or even could live there, due to the extreme alchemical volatility.

Still, some desperate few make expeditions Beyond in order to tap some vein of semi-stable resources.
