why doesn't a lich just make his phylactery the planet? lasts (mostly) forever, adventurers can't destroy it (unless they are evil, or at least spiteful), no shortage of dying people, etc. it seems like a solid plan. pic probably unrelated
phylacteries are destroyed during restoration.
Because a phylactery is a piece of jewelry, and because a lich's phylactery has to be made of adamantine, you fucking mong.
Also phylacteries are generally two size categories smaller than the creature that creates it.

I'd say that a lich has to have access to the entirety of a prospective phylactery... to bathe it in the blood of the innocent, at the very least, even if you don't have them cover it in profane runes or whatever.
That would, however, make for a damned interesting story hook. There's a high level Wizard that's actually trying to pull this off, attempting to wander every inch of the entire world setting it up to become his phylactery... maybe he's getting kind of old, and needs to speed things up, which is why he's started getting sloppy and leaving clues for adventurers to figure out what's up.

Because the planet usually has some vague conscious from all the collective peoples, plants, animals, insects, microbes, fish, etc.. That dwell upon it and inside of it and prevent such things from happening.
If a Lich was powerful enough to surpass the wills of everything living thing existing upon a planet it wouldn't have to be a Lich anymore and would be something resembling a genuine God.
