Howard actually hated capitalism, and a lot of shit that goes down in the Hyborian Age is him bitching about the excess of 1920s capitalism, especially the Texas oilmen. He wanted a return to the good old west, and that's about as far away from fascism you can get.

I don't think you understand what fascism is

Fascism:
>hyper nationalism
>authoritarianism
>symbolism
>mass violence

Conan's enemies typically display all of those things.

Fascism also has nothing against capitalism like communism does, it just puts it under its own control. Which is again just authoritarianism, which is again what conan fought against.

Look, I ain't saying Conan's a fascist, but by your description any enemy in literature would meet 3/4ths of the distinctions of fascism.
Enemies are generally violent, there are generally more of them than there are of the hero, because who cares about heroes triumphing against quite modest odds, and being media, plenty of people will read symbolism into it whether or not any was intended.

Er....plus, the movie's Conan is actually really different from Howard's Conan. Like, they're both fucking awesome, but there's a lot of difference. Milius used way more Nietzche than Howard did.
>>
>>46223330
Well duh, anon. Most enemy factions in fiction are painted in fascistic terms. No one is saying they aren't.

The thing is Conan is a free spirited individual who directly fights fascist-like enemy forces and paints ideals like freedom and savagery in a good light, which are direct opposites to what fascism is about.
>>
>>46218247
u wot, m8?
Conan is always about Free spirits and the savagery of untamed man overcoming the constraints of civilisation.
How the everliving fuck do you equate that with Fascism? I know I've swallowed the bait hook line and sinker, but I can't help myself; I must know.
>>
>>46220232

Fascism uses a lot of themes and thoughts that somewhat resembles some of Howard's views, but it applies it to the nation rather than the individual. Society needs to be strong and pure, focused and healthy yadayadayada.

But Howard's core theme is basically how civilization is a fluke that breeds degenerates and shelters weaklings, while barbarianism is the natural state of mankind and will always triumph. It's opposed to organized society and authoritarianism, even when Conan becomes the king of a nation he does so because the previous king is a decadent tyrant, and once he has the throne his savagery lets him overcome the intriguing and plots of civilized men.
>>
>>46220232
It's a real stretch to say that power-hungry sorcerers and hordes of invading picts somehow exemplify fascism.
>>
>>46225101
You're using the word fascism so loosely that it's become completely meaningless. Stop that.
>>
>>46230123
By calling them hordes you paint them in savage terms, but the themes in Conan are clearly that he fights against civilizations.

liberals use facism to describe everything right wing/what they don't like. the irony is facism is anti-individual/pro -oppression which are leftist ideologies.
>>
>>46230263
They aren't any more leftist than they are rightist. Sometimes they get termed that way but when you're talking about shit like nazism and communism it's really putting the discussion out of reasonable bounds.

I don't think the original book had much to do with fascism, other than coming out around when Vietnam was making everyone hate war (and rightly so). The Movie pretty much parodied the fascist read of the book.
>>
>>46232437
Fascism is hard to define, but if I recall correctly people don't typically have the right to vote in a fascist regime. In fact, I'm pretty sure there's no democratic process at all in fascism.

The people in Starship Troopers are born civilians, unable to vote or hold public office. Only after serving a term working for the government (not necessarily in the military) do they become citizens.

The depiction of humanity in that book was definitely authoritarian, but I'm pretty sure it wasn't fascist.

>>
>>46243103
I won't argue that it was supremely shit-heeled, because it was, but I'll also say that it's more complicated in that in the sense that exactly how the U.S. government encouraged and supported settlement.

A lot of people got 40 acres and a mule, so I guess there is that, the mule. For that many people, that is a lot of mules.

Otherwise a lot of the support was more in the sense you could cry "MASSACRE" or "INDIAN WAR!" and the Cavalry would come running even if you were the ones who literally started it and made the Indians want to retaliate in the first place. (Extremely common, happened for hundreds of miles around where I live and it's why the largest, most desirable Valley in the area has no native Indians and why that tribe is extinct).

The U.S. Government also jumped in and supported the issue of Texas seceding from Mexico, and a lot of the settlers in Texas signed oaths and made promises to be good Mexican citizens in bad faith with the notion of doing so firmly in their mind when they came. The honoring, or lack of it towards Mexico and Mexican citizens newly in U.S. territory after Mexico was roundly humiliated and carved up into said territory also showed real favoritism and agenda on the part of the Government.

I guess the U.S. Government also had a large hand in funding Indian Schools, which were perfidious acts of cultural genocide and just plain fucking mean towards the kids in general.

I think what I'm saying here is it wasn't all money or supplies, although there are cases where money was thrown down. Just not always directly towards settlers. The support was more in the sense of total support for almost anything they did fueled by a sense of "Manifest Destiny" and moral certainty and entitlement.
