But before we look at the stars and think about what we want to accomplish there, let's look back at our home planet. Especially our nearest relatives: chimpanzees.
Chimpanzees can be split into two groups, the common Chimpanzee and the Bonobo.
How do each of the two groups behave when in contact with a member of a different clan?
The Bonobo, who lives in an area with more than enough food for everyone usually goes for sex, they bang the member of thr other clan and then trot off to report the encounter to the others so that they may keep their distance from the other clan and avoid any conflict.
This strategy increases genetic diversity inside groups, and works as a means to avoid war between clans.
Chimpanzees however live in an area with far less food, they patroll their territory and if they see a member of a different clan they will kill it to ensure that their own clan has the food it needs to survive. The other clan can then either send out warriors themselves to find out what happened to their missing member, or assume them dead and note that there is a strong hostile clan nearby. This method allows survival of the fittest clan only and leads to the betterment of the chimpanzee species, and leads to stronger and more intelligent offspring. If a clan was to always run away from combat it will eventually be pushed into an area with little to no food at all and starve there.
Looking back up at the stars we see that the room between them is vast and empty. We simply don't have the resources to move on to the next system if we see another species approach ours. We must fight them, kill them and assert our dominance over the resources we need. We must be the more domimant clan, and we must ensure that we survive, and that we are not pushed to resource-less zones.

The one thing Rudi had learned during his boot camp was dressing wounds and cleaning them. The wound in her side would heal in a few days when cleaned. The medical supplies he had scavenged from the firebase would last him a lifetime, and he had enough alcohol to drown a platoon.
All thoughts of his meal forgotten, Rudi slung the bleeding eldar over his shoulder and took her back to his camp. After she was safely there, he returned to the water hole to retrieve his sniper rifle and got lucky with stumbling across a young wildkin. Sadly for the poor beast, it wasn't as beautiful as what Rudi had found a couple of hours ago, and carrying a body was hungry work.
As the sun began to set on this distant alien world, Rudi returned to his base camp with a freshly killed wildkin, his rifle and a sword that was as too pretty to fight with.
