WizKids, pretty much start from there.

A Mecha-Zone production that i've liked for a while now.

A low end mobile medium that works best in broken terrain.
The LAC is designed to explosively separate in case of ammo explosion. (CASE II)
>>
So I got the game a while ago. Want to paint but I dont want to paint in faction-specific colors.

But how do I paint then? All of the primary colors are tied to one faction or another.

Maybe I shouldn't paint at all.
>>
>>46214962
generic camo patterns. those work for anyone.
Fieldgrau is also a wonderful all-faction option

Tell me the secrets and rules-of-thumb-s needed in order to become a master 'mech designer.

I like to make 'mechs that, fluff wise, are slapped together junkers piloted by bandits and pirates.
>>
>>46214962

Just paint however you like.
If anyone asks, your just some merc company who tried to mimic the big boys.

Or you're some glitzy entertainer from Solaris who hams it up for crowds.
>>
>>46215061
>Tell me the secrets and rules-of-thumb-s needed in order to become a master 'mech designer.
NEVER EVER skip CASE if there's ammo. 90% armor fractions. MLs. LBX-10s, SFEs under 6/9 mediums or 5/8 heavies or 4/6 assaults. endo is always better than FF or XLFEs. gauss rifles always, MRMs never LPPCs stronk, IJJs are disgusting on 55 tonners, GECM sometimes, BAP never. melee is fine if you can go 5/8 (or 4/6 for assaults) and preferably jump, but a bad notion otherwise. the basic PPC is actually a pretty good weapon.
>>
>>46215061
>master 'Mech designer
No such thing, really. This is because these days, optimization is formulaic. So you're better off making what you want to make. Some good guidelines are:

1. If you want to put more weapons than the heat sinks can handle on it, make it bracket fire. What this means is, you have a group of long-range weapons (usually with minimum ranges) then short range weapons that come into play to cover that deficiency. This has the benefit of being able to adjust fire based on range, and conserve heat and weight due to not needing as many heat sinks.

2. 85% rule for armor will always give you an effective design, protection-wise. It might not be ideal, but so long as you have 85% armor coverage, you're doing alright. Now, some people think more is better, and some have different numbers they used based on what type of 'Mech it is, but as a general rule, not going below 85% armor will serve.

3. Lots of ammo? CASE II if era appropriate, especially on XL designs in the Inner Sphere. If you have to use regular CASE, opt for LFEs or SFEs if you can, unless it's a fast 'Mech or has lots of IJJs.

4. This applies to your design: make sure you have plenty of ammo. It's a game of inches, really. usually ~15 shots on anything is enough for a game, but campaign play obviously upsets that. But for a lance v lance game in an afternoon? 15 shots is a good target number. So your RAC could use more ammo. I would go with 1 MPL and 1 ML and use the extra ton for more ammo on that, especially if it's a raider. Pirates often don't get to resupply as much, so 'Mechs that are anemic on ammo can be a problem. Obviously just making all raiders have laser weapons is a boring workaround, so ammo count and being aware of it is a must.

5. Design what you like. If you aren't having fun with it, what's the point? That said, I too like to build junkers and FrankenMechs, or just "junkyard" variants of venerable machines that hard up bandits and pirates use. Godspeed.
>>
>>46215061

The only worthwhile tonnages are 25 tons (for speed and recon) and 100 tons (for fighting). Maximize the number of ERPPCs and SRMs on every design, no other weapons should be used, aside from Medium Lasers to fill unused tonnage. No Mech for fighting should be faster than 3/5, but 3/5/3 is acceptable. Maximum armor all the time. Have enough heat sinks to totally cover the ERPPCs or the SRMs, not both.

Designing Mechs for optimized for hyper-entropic warfare is fairly simple, and will never steer you wrong.

The essence of a zombie is still the same as it ever was; lots of armor, non XL engines, good portion of its firepower in torsos, and all energy weapons.

The main thing these days is just what kind of armor you want to use, since you've got stuff like hardened, ferro-lam. and the more specialized types like ballistic reinforced, or if you want reinforced structure. Also, whether or not you want to armor any internal components, gyros being a common thing to do so with.

Could be. In retrospect, there were few enough people in the video (and I can't go back and check now) that it could have been entirely done by actors, on a closed set, with visible police presence. It's not impossible. It's just highly unlikely, given the pain in the ass required to actually get cops to come watch you film stuff and reassure the public that you aren't actually terrorists.

Filming shit with guns/bombs in a public place is WAY more involved than just grabbing a camera, costume, airsoft guns, and heading to your local 7/11. I don't think it's ever taken less than 3 weeks of work to arrange that sort of thing in my whole career.

Next question?

Old Drac player here, I have several favourite regiments, but the top two would have to be the Second Night Stalkers and the Otomo. What are your 4 favorite mechs in the intro box?

What are your 4 least favorite in said box?
>>
>>46231438
Blocking sections means you build the mech to work within that constraint.

For instance, set up weapons so your long and short range guns are on separate sides, so it shields the short range side at a distance, then stops defending when in close, and if it has two shields, it then switches to defending the long range side.

Still, the number of problems with shields really demands errata. Particularly the whole "shield reduced to 0 DA/DC provides no benefit, but still inflicts all its penalties" part.

>>46232242
Turrets are part of the location they're mounted, so shields still block them.

Probably why the 3085 Field Artillery used Thumpers, 20 shots is a usable load, especially en masse due to low cost, but the 10 of a Sniper and especially 5 for a Long Tom just wouldn't work well.

APC nothing, that's exactly the kind of thing the J-27 was made for. It's full name is J-27 Ordnance Transport, after all.

It works, but time reloading is time not shooting, and it takes 3 turns to reload a ton of ammo when in action. Though you could utilize the numbers the lower BV allows you to have enough guns to rotate through, so some are always going. Though a Long Tom just by itself is 368 BV, so even in field gun form it likely wouldn't be all that cheap, you might be better off with a simple slow 50 ton or so vehicle with 4 tons of ammo. Snipers are only 85 BV though, so it could work.

I'm getting back into Battletech after a 8-9 year hiatus.

Can I get some recommendations for solid mechs/variants?

I played a game with a Bushwacker S2 the other day, decent punch and surprisingly high armor for it's weight. And I had a Trebuchet that was getting the job done nicely until it started taking fire.

The Dragon Fire is remarkably good but often overlooked. The Merlin is just an extremely solid trooper mech, nobody has ever gone wrong with a griffin or Thunderbolt, Archers are the gold standard of fire support for a reason, and the Bandersnatch is actually a great support/bodyguard mech. For assaults, the Nightstar is basically the gold standard, and the Emperor is just a good all-around machine

Technically speaking, only the dracs and MoC don't modify the basic SL force org one way or another.
The similarity in overall doctrine I think can mostly be attributed to the fact that everyone is operating forces of the same units in roughly similar proportions with similar objectives, which would produce some pretty similar doctrine all around

I know the Feddies and FWL groups up regiments, but that doesn't really count.

The Caps do have their augmented lances
Marians do something with units of 5

>>46272390
The FWL does odd-sized tank formations, with 3-6 tanks to the lance, the taurians run two-tank elements and put three in a lance, as well as four-company mech battalions. The AFFS has the LCT which is combined-arms on a sub-regimental scale. I forget exactly what it is the lyrans do, but I'm pretty sure it's tank-related. The OA doesn't muck with the force org charts, but they attach mechs as support units to aerospace units, which is weird and unique to them

The newest variant is pretty damned good, except the HLL is kinda useless except for taking potshots when the MXPLs are out of range.

Somebody a few threads ago asked why our regulars drink so much.

Aside from BT fans generally being older and therefore more beaten-down by life (and thus drink for relief from the resultant soul-crushing pain), I've got a good reason tonight. First hockey game my wife and son can both come and watch. Single-elimination playoff game. We're up 4-0 with 6:30 minutes to go in regulation. We lost the game 8-4. Neither my wife nor kid stayed to wait for me when I came out of the locker room; they'd already left and went home.

Oh, and I get the third "your relative has cancer" email inside of 2 weeks when I get home.

So yeah, I'ma drink a bit.

NEA I prefer when you talk about warships and space combat and blue water naval history instead of talking about real world problems.
