Lets build a fantasy world from scratch. First idea seconded decides continent number and shape
>>
>>46209154
Hundreds.

This planet is the size of Jupiter.
>>
>>46209193
seconded
>>
>>46209193
Interesting. Ok, we'll do this.
How spaced out should they be from each other?
>>
>>46209238
Huge oceans.

Everything geography is fucking huge.

So are some of the trees.
>>
>>46209238
several hundred miles
>>
>>46209285
or just make the inhabitants really fuckin small so everything is massive in comparison.
>>
>>46209290
Seconded

>>46209332
Nope.

Planet is huge.

Most of the animals and plants are regular size.

Planet has survivable gravity because it's fucking hollow. And things live in that dark place.
>>
>>46209411
there is a second slightly less huge planet inside the original planet, everything lives inside this inner planet
>>
>>46209481
It's planets all the way down. Until you get to the very center, which is where It lives.
>>
>>46209193
Let's make this thing a gas giant and have all the continents floating at different heights.
Giant trees or whatever can serve as the bridge between continents, or at least as starting points for flying mega fauna

OP here. How about the stories are told in such a way that be never pin down absolute size, never giving anything we could convert to human distances.
Map mark up 1
>>
>>46209495
Each planet has a different style. Only the one closest to the surface is earthlike.
>>
>>46209411
>>46209481
Seconded

The outer planet is actually a sentient organism that wants to feed on the inner planet but can't because reasons
>>
>>46209495
It is slowly EATING it's way out of the planetss's's cores, entirely consuming every planet in its path and only a group of foolhardy teenagers can stop it.
>>
>>46209495
The creatures living on these consecutively darker and smaller inner planets are increasingly strange and alien with every level, as well as more and more ancient ancient. Oldest of them all are the incomprehensible being living at the core, who may have, in fact, set everything in motion.

The inner planet is inhabited by the members of an ancient civilizations, driven underground by a previous catastrophe.
>>
>>46209517
I really like this idea. This could fit with the map I made, the large continents being heavy and lower.
>>
>>46209517
Now that's an A1 idea senpai.
>>
>>46209495
>>46209523
>>46209525

All the planets are hollow with exceedingly (in geographic terms) thin crusts. Due to the low (again, relatively) low matter organisms are pulled outwards towards the edges of the crust from centrifugal force instead of inwards from gravity

So airships: yes or no?
>>
Those planets-inside-planets around an eldritch monstrosity are basically Phyrexia, aren't they?
>>
>>46209523
>>46209495
The various planets are connected by massive magitek elevators maintained and guarded by unfeeling automatons. Each planet's residents seeks to take control of these elevators so as to reach the surface and escape the creature at the center of the planets.
>>
Ok so, we have these ideas so far
>planets in planets or gas giant with continents at different depths floating in the ether
>Each layer differs greatly, with large tree like being connecting layers or continents. (What if these trees feed off the energy of pressure or chemical differences between layers, like pressure is constantly blow through the tree like a straw and it has windmill like structures harnessing the energy)
>The inner planet is inhabited by the members of an ancient civilizations, driven underground by a previous catastrophe, or ancient chulthu esce creatures
>>
>>46209612
only in the spaces between planets, there is no atmosphere on the outmost planet
>>
>>46209638
>One group reaches the surface
>Constructs a ship to escape
>Hits the wall of another planet's inside
>>
>>46209638
Anti-second.

Thats dumb as fuck anon.
>>
>>46209686
I prefer the idea of having concentric hollow worlds.
>>46209638
>>46209711
>>46209732
The outermost layer is littered with ancient starport facilities, relics of the world's oldest race- the first to learn of It, and the first to escape. None of them are still in functional condition.
>>46209753
I like it.
>>
Regardless of how this final creation goes, know that I am stealing all of these ideas for my own setting.
>>
>>46209777
They didn't actually escape, they tried and ran into and were devoured by That which is outside of the planets
>>
The most heroic race/faction wears armor in the style of antique diving suits.
>>
>>46209711
I like this idea better than the elevators. Climb the hundred mile tall tree to get to the next layer.
>>
>>46209858
Their arch-enemy faction wears armor in the style of old Cosmonaut suits.
>>
>>46209858
Seconded.
>>
>>46209858
They patrol the outermost, airless world, defending the inner worlds from the demons shed from That Which Is like dead skin cells.
>>
So fantasy or science fiction?

Or both?
>>
File: outer.jpg (77 KB, 1270x1341) Image search: [Google]
outer.jpg
77 KB, 1270x1341
Outer most planet. No atmosphere, littered with old spacefaring tech. No treelevators, evaporated ocean beds coated in salt. Was once earth like
>>
>>46209949
Seems to be both.
>>
>>46209949
>fantasy or science fiction?

We don't need genres where we're going.
>>
>>46209949
Both, obviously.
There is no clear distinction between science and magic, and most inhabitants of the worlds would not make one. What /is/ the difference between a wand of fireball and a ray-gun, after all?
>>
>>46209949
I'd say fantasy with sci-fi elements reserved for the ancient civilisations.

But then my general idea is tribal societies hunting the mega fauna living in the great trees and worshipping ancient tech they recover from ruins.
>>
>>46209949
Both. Outer planets are science fiction fighting off aliens from the outside, which are basically shed cells from That. The inner planets are fantasy, blissfully unaware of the outside but are fighting their own battle against It. There's a transition point halfway that's nearly impossible to cross, so neither side knows about the other
>>
>>46209986
It does help to world build anon.

>>46209969
So like Destiny? This place does sound a bit like the Hive homeworld
>>
>>46210024
Somewhat, though with much more aesthetic variance, like the diving suit faction and cosmonaut faction above.
>>
full disclosure, I posted >>46209205, >>46209290, >>46209481, and >>46209611 with the intent to spinning this thread off into insanity, but now I'm getting invested
>>
>>46209904
The Cosmanuts and the Divers were originally close allies, tthe Cosmonauts focusing on recovering tech and making use of it for the greater good. Eventually, they activated one of the several unknown facilities across the outer planet's surface, and were launched into the abyss above.

They are no returning in strange ships, forming alliances or mutating to be more like the dead cells of That, their visors clouded with nebula-like images.
>>
>>46210019
I'd favor a more gradual transition, from the high-ish tech of the outer fortresses slowly transitioning to the more fantastic as you get closer to the reality-sapping presence of It. The greatest and most stable civilizations are in the middle layers, furthest from both the presence of It and the incursions from outside.

Second inner layer. Minimal life but not dead. Desert like climate as water absorbs into the stone sky to some degree instead of raining back down. Few treelevators.

Have we addressed illumination on inner levels yet?
>>
>>46210019
Do It and That try to meet or what? Is this entire thing just an egg getting fertilised?
>>
in the inner planets, they have gained psychic powers due to the mind raping exposure of It, while the outer planets have Magic because of the energies released by That
>>
>>46210123
Glistening crystals from the above world's crust. Each layer's glowing crystals are a different color (with obviously at least one layer having none, for coolness points) and as such the sky color varies from world to world.
>>
Because gravity is so low due to the low mass of all the thin planets, and most of the multi-planets' volume is made of a gas, let's say it's a very light gas like oxygen or the fantasy equivalent.

Flight is much more easily achieved, and flightless creatures can jump very far and high.
>>
>>46210123
A lower liquid mantle layer or something that produces water spouts or springs that are quickly quickly go into the sky. Maybe it has traces of phosphorus so it looks like the ground is spitting beams of light in the sky.
>>
Anyone have good ideas for climate, appearance of third level map?
>>
>>46210203
I'd say that third map could be a rather normal world, while the fourth is a volcanic hell-hole.
>>
>>46210151
I was thinking that the worlds were all a bunker/farm complex built by It to provide a self-sustaining shelter against That, but that's cool too.

>>46210203
Immense crevices from some ancient magic-science catastrophe. All the water has drained into the fourth world.
>>
>>46210213 here, changing my suggestion to agree with >>46210246
>>
>>46210276
And the fourth level is a water-world as a result, and could possibly be the original home level of >>46209858, hence the diving suits.

The treelevators naturally grow buds at their top. These buds are utterly humongous, the size of a city block, and are filled with a powerful chemical that, due to an ongoing chemical reaction, naturally glows so bright as to simulate a sun.
>>
>>46210765
interesting, what if the land on the fourth layer isn't land at all but the thriving roots of the many treelevators forming mangroves. Many trees on 4th layer means extremely bright. Most inhabitants live underwater, but very dark leather sentients live amongst the roots maybe even with photosynthesis like biology

No love for the sun and moon map? Made in a thread similar to this one based around god-like beings creating the planet together to represent themselves. Good thread but I lost my notes from it
>>
>>46210765
The further in you get towards the center, the more trees are dead; still supporting the weight of the worlds, but no longer shedding light. Winter is setting in as It eats its way out.
>>
>>46211306
so this world is like some alien combination of Nausicaa and Lorwyn?
>>
>>46211306
A big bad impending doom plot point could be the spread of tree sickness from the inside.
the prophets say the ending of the light is coming.
Perhaps, lets say around level six, there is an extremely feared, level wide government that blocks access from higher levels. When the level trees are finally breached the upper inhabitants see the government is a sham now, with most of the populations "guarding" the trees to the higher levels due to winter killing most of the surface dwellers. The problem then spreads up through the levels. perhaps a disease, or an ancient nanite, or some mystical force.
>>
Ok, so what about the gods? Are there even gods in the first place? Were they consumed by It and That? Are they still around doing stuff?
>>
>>46211373
I dunno. Is Lorwyn being consumed from above and below by cosmic abominations?
>>
>>46209154
How the fuck does that map work. THose rivers and mountains seem to be working the exact opposite to how the laws of nature would say so. Either those rivers are flowing down from the mountains and just, dissipating into the centre of the sun or they're starting in the centre and going uphill.
Also, why the fuck would you build a city in the only place in the entire continent with no water?
>>
>>46211460
it's a fairytale world that flip flops between whimsy and nightmare. I assumed for this array of planets the seasons start from the center and spread outwards in a cycle
>>
>>46211454
What if the gods guarded the outer world in the distant past and the space faring outer level species imprisoned the gods so they could escape. So the gods are held outside the planet, unable to affect all but the surface layer
>>
>>46211454
each planet has its own deity which is also the name of the planet
>>
>>46211478
The religon of the pure sands is the culture of that center sun city. They were humans who saw water comsumption as a sin to be avoided as much as possible, with the most devoid needing almost none at all. So, they build their holy city in the dryest place. The rivers flow in, the entire center of the sun is a bowl, and the river dry out due to the intense heat from the magic there.
>>
>>46211536
Each planet has its own diety whos corporeal body is the planet itself.
>>
>>46211511
It's not confirmed there /are/ seasons, or for that matter day and night.
I'd say there are day and night, as the trees must rest after shining for a while as their reagents replenish, but I'd go with there being no consistent seasons.
>>46211536
Each deity is extremely limited outside their own planet, and vary widely in power in sanity. As a general rule, the closer you get to It, the more powerful... and the less sane.
>>
>>46211606
>>46211617
The planet gods near the center and the outside are dead, dying, or completely insane. The gods in the middle are the strongest and most sane, but as It and That slowly approach their power is decaying
>>
>>46211566
Unless it was over 100 degrees C all the time in the bowl, convectional rain would still cause it to flood into a shallow, warm, inland sea. And if it's hot enough to prevent even a lake from forming, it would be near impossible for any large or mammalian life to survive there at all, never mind humans. And if they could survive, they would need to live underground and their water requirement would be astronomical.

What's the source. I want to read it and get angry about it.
>>
>>46211659
Second.
>>
>>46211792
I forget the specifics but it was a thread like this one where we came up with, not a published work or anything. There was a very detailed google doc that about 10 people worked on for a few days but I don't have the link. I drew the map.
There was a faith=magic aspect to the world, which may have been the reason for the extreme heat tolerance of the humans there, but I don't recall
>>
>>46211916
The only setting where pic related is okay is Discworld, and that's because Pratchett had wizard colleges where they study it like it was quantum physics, and the whole thing was being played for laughs 24/7.
Settings need rules. Ruuuuules.
>>
I think magic can be mystical and unexplained by science and still be a good setting. I don't need midichlorians in my life.
>>
Their is a forgotten God, a great mechanical Old One built in ages past. For what or why is unremembered, all that is known is the autonomous Motorhead would charge down both the sun and the moon at such incredible speed.

>Never read a single post
>>

The second and third layers are criss-crossed with enormous railway tracks, carrying supplies from the void warrior's fourth-level home to their fortresses on the outer skin, supplying their endless war against That's servitors.
