My problem isn't really with Bernthal, who is pretty damn good in the role.
It's just that I've never LIKED having The Punisher as part of the larger Marvel universe.
He kinda suffers from the "X-Men Problem" where you have to jump through a million hoops to make his stories work in the larger setting.
With the X-Men, anti-mutant prejudice makes no sense when there are other schmucks in tights saving the day or trying to destroy the world all the damn time. With The Punisher, Frank Castle's one man war on crime is pretty much completely irrelevant when there are honest-to-god superheroes running around who are just plain better at it.
They did a pretty good job of it with Daredevil, but it's still kinda... pointless. And as this universe expands more and more, it's just gonna get worse.

The Punisher is a character who kinda needs to be in "the real world" for his whole thing to work.

Sort of. Punisher concerns himself mostly wtih "mundane" crime. The supers in the MCU tend to be concerned with their flavour of supers.

I mean, full disclosure, I know completely nothing about the comics, but they sorta did this as close as possible w/ Daredevil, since that's overall... not "the real world" but sorta as close as I'm sensing Marvel gets.

And IMO, the fact that it's sorta not still helps. Honestly, the idea of the Punisher has always seemed IMMENSELY boring to me (the short linked sorta confirmed this desu) - like ok it's normal real world crime and then a guy who's really good at shooting and punching and looking edgy takes care of it. Even if that's not the extent of him, that's how he seems to come off a lot of the time, at least to me.

Putting him in the context of ... w/e the fuck is happening atm in Daredevil made him interesting imo in a sort of "reality meeting fantasy" way. Frank Castle makes sense as a story that exists in Hell's Kitchen in the same way the mostly-grounded reality of Hell's Kitchen is getting swallowed up by... w/e the fuck is going down with "the war".

Idk, that's how it came across to me, a person who knows jack shit about comics.

I think you have it right.

The show's strength is it's a lot more grounded and much smaller scale than the movies. This allows them to explore the difference between a comic book vigilante like Daredevil (a guy with special powers who runs around beating up bad guys) and a "real" vigilante like Punisher (a pissed off Average Joe gunning down criminals because he thinks the system is broken).

I don't know, he seemed to follow a clear arc, going from a staunch Republican to a reluctant associate, to a benefactor and supporter of Julius' regime, led every step by hook or crook. After the Ides of March, he really fell off the wagon, jumping whole heartedly it seems into being the crime boss of Rome. I haven't finished the series yet and heard that they really compress the second half of the second season due to the show being cancelled.

The show had Frank shot in the head during the park massacre so he feels the trauma of losing his family just like it was yesterday everyday and can't turn it off. Almost? I'm pretty sure shit exactly like this is made for Shadowrun campaigns.

Think about this for a moment: Spider-Man is showing up in the next Captain America movie. That means Sony gave up the rights to him, even while superhero movies are making hundreds of millions of dollars for years on end. Somebody at Sony got stabbed in an alley over this, I guarantee it.

Mix that in with the occasional "college alumni association needs to convince high school star to play football / basketball for their school" or "pro team quietly needs to retrieve Johnny Manzel / get pictures of him doing shit so they can get out of paying his contract" and you've got Shadowruns forever.

You got any specifics? That's a serious question, by the way. My image of Saladin is very much based on general lectures about the era (barely touching upon Saladin as a specific person) and the way he was depicted in 19th and 20th century writing aswell as contemporary media. So my knowledge is limited at best.

His superior Nur al-Din, Nur al-Din's son, others within the Mesopotamian army. He was power hungry, he went around beating up people of his own faith for a good few years, before apparently venting his "holy" wrath upon the Christians. Established his family in positions of power throughout the places he conquered. Not unusual for conquerors at the time, but let's be real, pretty corrupt. Saying all that, I agree for the time he wasn't too bad (if what they say about his generosity for the common man is true [I'm sceptical]) , but he's hardly a shining beacon of righteousness.

Lawful could be a bit of a stretch given he's a vigilante, but only if you're one of those sticklers for "lawful = following the local laws" and not "lawful = order, honor, methodical, reliable, etc". In which case, he follows the latter to a T.

And the Punisher's whole 'no quarter asked or given for evil and no harming innocents' is precisely what a Paladin is.

Couldn't disagree more.
Frank's not bothered by consistency, ethics, codes of conduct. He's bothered by what works and what his pain motivates him to do. I'd say Neutral bordering on Chaotic because he'll do things like impale people on meathooks purely out of spite and things like save children from murderers and sees no contradiction.
As far as Good goes he works to fight Evil, but that is not enough to defy Evil. He's not interested in mercy, redemption, construction, humility, any of the actual values of Good. He just strikes the Wicked.

Shit, Ezio is a better Paladin. Down to the Charisma and magic powers.

The Punisher is probably a paladin by Gary Gygax's definition of LG:

""Paladins are not stupid, and in general there is no rule of Lawful Good against killing enemies. The old adage about nits making lice applies. Also, as I have often noted, a paladin can freely dispatch prisoners of Evil alignment that have surrendered and renounced that alignment in favor of Lawful Good. They are then sent on to their reward before they can backslide.

An eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth is by no means anything but Lawful and Good. Prisoners guilty of murder or similar capital crimes can be executed without violating any precept of the alignment. Hanging is likely the usual method of such execution, although it might be beheading, strangulation, etc. A paladin is likely a figure that would be considered a fair judge of criminal conduct.

The Anglo-Saxon punishment for rape and/or murder of a woman was as follows: tearing off of the scalp, cutting off of the ears and nose, blinding, chopping off of the feet and hands, and leaving the criminal beside the road for all bypassers to see. I don't know if they cauterized the limb stumps or not before doing that. It was said that a woman and child could walk the length and breadth of England without fear of molestation then.
Chivington might have been quoted as saying "nits make lice," but he is certainly not the first one to make such an observation as it is an observable fact. If you have read the account of wooden Leg, a warrior of the Cheyenne tribe that fought against Custer et al., he dispassionately noted killing an enemy squaw for the reason in question.

I am not going to waste my time and yours debating ethics and philosophy. I will state unequivocally that in the alignment system as presented in OAD&D, an eye for an eye is lawful and just, Lawful Good, as misconduct is to be punished under just laws.
Lawful Neutrality countenances malign laws. Lawful Good does not."
>>
>>46228655
He didn't run around killing petty thieves, he killed the gangs that murdered his family and he knew were guilty of murdering innocent people like Grotto murdering an elderwoman just because she saw his face.
>>
>>46228609
>he'll do things like impale people on meathooks purely out of spite and things like save children from murderers and sees no contradiction.
But that's not a contradiction unless you see murdering a serial killer and murdering an innocent child as exactly the same thing, and if you do that's lawful stupid.

He doesn't belong to an ethical framework where he should treat people with respect as a general rule. He doesn't belong to an ethical framework where he does what is effective and goal serving. He doesn't belong to an ethical framework at all.

He does whatever the fuck he thinks of in the moment. Welcome to Chaos. A single defined operating principle does not make a person Lawful any more than a single lustful thought makes them Evil nor a single act of kindess making them Good.

Nobu's Lawful Evil, Daredevil is Lawful Good, Electra and Punisher are Chaotic Complicated.
>>
>>46229631
>He doesn't belong to an ethical framework where he should treat people with respect as a general rule.
Ethics isn't defined by respect, it's defined by you treating everyone as you would want to be treated and how they want to be treated. Though you can see how this doesn't always work when they are conflicts of belief on two opposing parties, especially if one party doesn't have ethical beliefs.

Frank is not chaotic, it's a very simple "If you are a murderer, I am going to hunt you down and kill you. This also makes me a murderer so it's right to kill me too."

Which he states in the show.
>>
>>46229392
The Punisher would actually make a decent Paladin because of this. The only reason he's considered a vigilante is because of all the legal bullshit that comes with killing people like that. I'm sure Frank would be considered a hero in a medieval type society since all he does is kill criminals who have done stuff worthy of being killed for.
>>
>>46229701
>"If you are a murderer, I am going to hunt you down and kill you. This also makes me a murderer so it's right to kill me too."
Might makes right is a pretty Chaotic ideal. Plus, I more meant that Frank's not the kind ot worry about precedent or consistency beyond his urges. He's not going to have agonising moments of "it's not right no matter how much I want it" or "Duty demands it, though I know it's wrong."
He just knows it's right or wrong in his gut and he acts. No framework. Chaos.

It's not mights make right, if he believed might made right he would believe the people that murdered his family were RIGHT and he doesn't. Why would he say what he's doing is wrong if he felt his might made it okay? Because that's not what he's doing, you might have some ground to argue he's Lawful Evil, but it's calling him chaotic is retarded. He's got a clear moral/ethical belief in how to act and executes it systematically to punish those that break his rules on how people should behave. Just because you're too blind to see it doesn't mean that framework doesn't exist.
>>
>>46229906
Added: If he believed might makes right he wouldn't run around protecting weak innocent people.
>>
>>46229906
If he thinks murder is wrong, he wouldn't be doing it.
That's the point. Nothing restrains him from performing the same acts as his enemies, he simply chooses to perform those acts on his enemies. There's nothing ethical about anything he does.
However, he can still be a hero. He puts a moral mission above his own safety, sacrificing much in order to accomplish it.
If you want Lawful, look at Daredevil. He has actions he won't take, like killing. He takes action he doesn't believe in, like lying to his friends, in order to preserve higher ideals. He has Ethics AND Morals.
MORALLY you can argue for Good, or Neutral or Evil for Punisher. I'd argue for Neutrality because while he's a scourge of Evil he's so sheerly destructive and bereft of other positive qualities it's hard to say he's truly Good.
However, even in my bleakest assessment of Chaotic Evil, Frank Castle is still a hero. He's a lawless zealot, but he will put himself in harm's way to defend and uphold what he believes in. There's a noble side to him, despite his alignment.
Easy to forget, what with D&D's way of classifying behaviour being utter shit.

Frank Castle is hard to give an alignment for.

He enjoys killing. But he only kills those who are sadistic and have already attacked an innocent.

He'll go to the ends of the Earth to kill a kidnapper, but he's been known to ignore those who need help because he doesn't save people, only punishes.

He's gone after heroes because they harmed an innocent, but doesn't tolerate working with evil for any form of greater good and killed surrendered villains working with heroes for clemency.

He hates Spider-man, but loves Captain America.

That's the whole point of his Punisher persona. He's not committing murder by his ethical standards, he is issuing punishment for wrongdoing. He is acting as the resolute hand of justice when the laws of man fails. He has an absolute and inflexible ethical code, so simple and clear that his actions seem impulsive by simple merit of being able to make judgements so quickly. He is pretty much a modern version of the detect evil and smite paladin-bot.

I've got to agree with Frank on this one.
It was one thing back in the day, when The Joker didn't kill people. But by this point, the Joker is a murderer with an absolutely ridiculous kill count, and yet they keep either not giving him the death penalty, or putting him in facilities with laughably porous security. Usually both.
Gotham's criminal justice system has failed REPEATEDLY to either rehabilitate OR stop this maniac. If I had him cornered in an alley like that, I'd probably pull the trigger, keep pulling 'til the slide locks back, go home and sleep like a fucking baby.

Well, so is Frank, really.
We essentially have three of the craziest fuckers in all of cape comics in that scene.
I mean Frank barely regards himself as human anymore, carrying on an unending one man war, seemingly as an elaborate means of suicide/penance for not being able to protect his loved ones.
I don't know if they've ever touched on it in a What If story or anything, but I could picture Frank killing himself if all the criminals just magically died one day.

You can talk Vhailor into doing something similar in PS:T. If you convince him that there's more criminals to hunt in the afterlife than while he's alive, he'll kill himself*.
I could see Frank going that route in the event the Earth became a crime-less utopia (or an apocalypse destroyed human civilization as we know it).

*Technically he's already dead, so it's more like he gives up being a spirit tied to the planes by his intense devotion to JUSTICE and goes back to being a normal dead person.
