Better or worse? More money in the scene or less? Debating which to play competitively.

The game is more complex, which is neither here nor there. I like both for different reasons.

Scene-wise, Magic is more expensive but you can at least purchase the cards you want directly. You have to craft them in Hearthstone, which is a pain in the ass and is the equivalent of having to open boosters to find the cards you want for Magic.

Getting into either is inadvisable.

Getting into for either for money is idiotic.

Over 15 tournaments with a $10k+ prize pool in the last 30 days for Hearthstone. Not counting the hundreds of smaller tournies.

The game is very easy for a pro game and you don't expire after 18 because there's no twitch reflexes, just intelligence.

It's very accessible and profitable in terms of e-sports.

Hearthstone has more prize money around, but getting into big events will involve serious ladder grinding or turning yourself into some sort of Twitch sensation. There's always one or two cheap competitive decks in Hearthstone, but the other ones are quite expensive (more expensive than an average Magic Standard deck, but occasionally a Magic deck is hella expensive). Most Hearthstone tournament formats require three or more decks to compete.

Since you play online, it's much easier to get practice games in with Hearthstone. You can play Magic online too, but if you're playing online Hearthstone is just a straight up better game. They're only really comparable for Hearthstone vs in-person Magic.

Hearthstone is introducing its first revolving format in like a month, which is both a decent time to get into it, but also a good time to hold back and see if Blizzard fucks it up.

Magic:
-Costs more money
-The cards you own can be banned from play
-if you play standard, you'll have to buy new decks every few months
-larger, more organized professional scene
-more opportunities to play at large events like grand prixs
-You can and will lose games because of mana screw/flood
-More complex play: There are more card types, and decision making on your opponent's turn.
-Huge amount of lore that I don't actually know much about. Some people are into it, though.

Hearthstone:
-Costs less money (I have several tier one decks and haven't spent a dime)
-Cards are, as a rule, not banned or nerfed. They have been in the past, but this is much more uncommon than in magic.
-In the past, all cards were playable. Now they're introducing a rotating format akin to standard, so time will tell if it ends up looking more like magic in that regard. As of right now, though, all your cards will always be playable.
-Much smaller competitive scene than in Magic. That's not to say that there isn't one, just that it doesn't have the same institutional support that Magic's competitive environment has.
-Online: You can play whenever you want to. This also means, however, that you won't meet new people playing at FNM or whatever.
-You can and will lose games because of the extreme amount of RNG in Hearthstone. Because it's an online game, the devs go overboard doing things that wouldn't be possible in a physical game. (Like "Put a random creature card into your hand", which can range from the most shitty common the the most powerful legendary)
-More simple/streamlined play: Everything is on the board, and everything on the board are creatures. The game has an intuitive, consistent ruleset that it follows. You don't have to worry about as much bullshit.
-Warcraft lore, in case you care about that

tl;dr
Magic: Expensive but more interesting mechanics
Hearthstone: Accessible but lots of RNG bullshit

Hearthstone is pretty chill, I like it, very good to waste your time on.

Magic has a way, WAY steeper entry fee if you want to do anything beyond casual tabletop stuff. But the way the game is played I find way more enjoyable. There's a greater deal of player interaction as players manually respond to what the other player does.

In Magic your opponent uses a creature to attack you. You can use one of your creatures to block, cast a spell to hinder the attack, use an artifact that applies to the situation, activate an enchantment or a combination of those or other factors.

In Hearthstone your opponent has one of their creatures attack one of your creatures. Unless you have a trap on the field at that time that applies... there is nothing you can do but play a creature with Taunt before that situation ever arose.

Cards in Hearthstone cost Mana and sometimes have a negative Battlecry or Deathrattle. In Magic cards can use Mana, cards in hand, your life, cards in your library, cards in your discard pile, cards in play... all can be resources which can lead to much more interesting synergies and as such lead to much more interesting deck builds. Hearthstone deck builds also felt very narrow in the directions they could go.

depends on how deep your pockets are, anon.

Magic decks regularly cost thousands of dollars.
Hearthstone is less fun but free to play

Are you really sure about this one? Hearthstone seems pretty huge and has tons of tournies all the time.

Also, one thing you forgot to mention that Magic has: longevity. Shit will be around forever and will be popular when Hearthstone is long dead.
