"The culling" exists for a couple of reasons

>To enable PVP
>To make room for the next wave of rookies
>To enforce a "tax" (for exempt) to prevent minimalist-hunters

It doesn't affect NPCs, only hunters, so it has a fairly minimal societal impact, especially with the goddess enforcing things otherwise.

It prevents you from hunting one slime or something and then doing nothing the rest of the month. You need to either have a well-equipped build to fight off (or avoid) other players or else hunt enough monsters to pay the tax.

Why do you need Fire to get Lightning? Lightning starts fires sometimes, but when the fuck does a fire shoot lightning bolts at people outside of a fucking volcano eruption?

Why can you get so might strength and agility and skill?

Defense and Intelligence are extremely rare. It's very easy to become a well rounded or highly specialized melee or ranged physical build but magic builds and high defense builds have to really go all over the fucking place for their basic stats. It pretty much forces you to take the +3 stat points as a DEF or INT focused build.

You either need to tone down how easy it is to get Strength, Agility and Skill or add in a couple more places to get intelligence and defense.

You also need to break up the physical tree better. A tree devoted to melee range and a tree devoted to ranged physical. Part of the prior mentioned issue with DEF and INT is that there is one go to tree for melee, that you can then compliment with weaponry and the others. In contrast ranged and magic builds are forced over several trees.

This is not a bad thing.

The bad thing is that too much melee power is in one place and the amount of stats it offers massively outnumbers the amount of stats in any other tree.

PvP is a dangerous position to take in CYOA.
Especially when it is counterproductive and could be prevented with any number of solutions.
In Artifex and other PvP based CYOA this makes sense, as these are often Highlanderesque situations.
Here we're supposed to be fighting feckin' dragons. And you tell me that for half a feckin' season it's open season? It's not the rape its that somehow the hunters are expected to eat each other, and after the season forgive all feckin' grieves.
All the while the FECKIN' DRAGONS ARE STILL FECKIN' FLYING AROUND.

melee is at an inherent disadvantage. people don't usually think about it this way, but when you say "melee", all other things being equal, it's automatically worse than ranged. to say nothing of magic, which combines ranged attacks with other things.

25 leftover, I could buy exempt, maybe sacrifice a luxury like Physiology or hot springs for some spending money, but I have plans to deal with the culling anyway.

I turn into a fucking dragon. Because I gain the "full power and size" of the monster, my own physical attributes are mostly irrelevant. Magical bonuses like one with nature still apply, but most of the bast stats don't. I would assume INT governs my ability to transform, so I take Sorcerer start for that.

While a dragon, I can rely on my mental assets, both my base intelligence and things like telepathy and sixth sense to give me an edge in combat. If I ever come across something stronger than me, I can Siphon it to add to my own strength. Of course, it isn't practical to be a giant dragon in every encounter, so I can store 2 other souls of smaller monsters for lesser fights.

During the culling I will hide out in the wilderness. I can disguise myself as a lesser monster while hunters are preoccupied with each other. I have the intellegence to live off the land, and can carry a nearly unlimited amount of supplies if that turns out to be more difficult. If I am forced into a fight, I still have my dragon/siphon. I avoid anyone with "nullification", thanks to premonitions of my almost definite demise in that case.

Volcanic/Desert/Glacial are still considered "Mid tier" by themselves. They have a 3/5 threat rating same as the monsters. That's 45 each or 90 for two, same as 3 monsters.

High tier biomes are those combined with other effects, reaching 4 or 5 threat level.

Enchantment gives a bladed staff the punch it needs. Petrify makes fast, low skill hunters easier. Strange is the go-to strategy for everyone without Indomitable or anti-magic. Phoenix Soul is the back-up plan. Due to an evenly high stat spread I can go melee and ranged as needed. Blink and Telepathy keep me save.

No, Molten Volcano, Sunken Glacier, or Twilight Desert (for example) are Top tier. It's based on threat level. 1-2 is low, 2-4 is mid, 4-5 is high, 5s being top.

Without any modifers Glacial, Volcano and Desert are solid 3s.

You're right that melee is worse than ranged or magic in theory. There is no reason some moron with a sword, shield and some metal armor should every stand up to a talent ranged character sniping them with a bow, or a mage zapping them with lightning.

Because you made a CYOA where you can fucking multiclass. You can, and people have, made builds that highlight that melee can get all the bullshit of your pumped up melee numbers, but still get ranged or magic to make up for their weaknesses.

Meanwhile a dedicated caster cannot do this. A dedicated archer can a bit, but it's a lot more limited than if you have a melee base. Magic on the other hand cannot get its proper power without going all over the board, and still ending up with less. So you end up with all the power of melee and some ranged or magic or you end up with ranged and magic of their proper power but have no room left for any melee. It means the distance issues with melee never fucking come into play, but pure archers and casters have no points left over to pick up the melee points the way melee characters have room to pick up anything they fucking want because the have a fucking TON in one place instead very little spread all over the place.

It's fucking shit balance.

It leans towards a weapon master build, but with no strength to start with it fucks that idea pretty badly. Skill is much easier to get than Strength from skills.

It does have the advantage of being the only class besides Sorc that isn't a drooling retard by default, but that's only if you consider something above 1 to be baseline. In this sort of context I consider 1 to be human baseline with all other stats being superhuman.

If you ignore stat minmaxing though, noble is good for the stylish as fuck build. I just haven't seen anyone make it yet.

I very much like to think, that all sleigh of hand actions, casting speed for sorcerers, setting traps, brewing poisons, parrying and being able to control great speed, are subjected to skill as measurement of how good you can manage the extraordinary. I consider Skill to be the ability to use weapons or martial arts. Technique in other words. It may also cover accuracy with ranged weapons and the ability to target vital locations (ie critical hits)

Without skill you fight pretty much like a monster. All force or speed but not a lot of form.

A high skill character would be like Dante. Like I said, stylish as fuck. But if you want to actually do damage you are gonna need strength and agility to back it up.

Magic wielders don't really need skill unless they like to focus on wand twirling, and monster forms don't get too much benefit either, though there is some.

Yeah, you can take Chronokinesis even without shattered limiter. Same with Vectors. I actually had Regokinesis (vector control) in an earlier version. But really, I think vector control as it's used in Index/Railgun is such a liberal use of the word that you might as well say you have the power to manipulate the number "one" and you'd get the exact same power set as vector control. Since essentially, you're just changing a universal value. So a change on any value will give the same degree of manipulation.

I'll give the CYOA another once over later, and get a more refined version out by say, the next CYOA Thread.

Sorry I pretty much get all of that from "Handling". I mentally insert "weapon" in there, although it still applies to non-weapon (ie fist) attacks as well which is probably why it's written the way it is.

Plus the noble class is all about Style and Skill, so obviously they go hand in hand.

Skill is also all over the weapon tree, which means that learning to use weapons effectively directly translates to more skill, which reinforces the idea that it focuses on weapon forms.

Why not take overdrive, even if you don't use it, you get an insane amount of stats from it. It's too good not to take. The fact that you can take it, and get plenty more stats for melee, and still have room for heal to completely negate the downsides of Overdrive turns it from too good with tons of stats attached to so fucking good that everyone should take it always because like quite a few of the physical skills provide way too many stats for far too few points.

Rogues is the term for neutrals in Worm. Any number of Perks/Drawbacks/Missions will do, but bear in mind that I make no promises. I'll do my best to fit this all in, although with the addition of missions, this CYOA's getting pretty high in the page count.

Well with agility, even if you max agility you can always get away. With strength it's the damage stat. Intelligence the magic blasting stat. They all do one thing that they can do on their own. Not so skill.

Plus the wider issue is that Nobles have rock bottom strength and not good agility, meaning that they're very, very bad at doing anything with their Skill.

The argument here is that unless a stat directly adds +X to damage, it doesn't matter that it allows you to deal X damage more times than you would otherwise.

Also that the Skill class sucks, but that's a (somewhat) separate issue.

I assume you are speaking in refrence to the Culling in the CYOA terms? The thing to remember here is you can't trust anyone. Not only that, but Factions are explicitly outlawed, so there's nothing to support a party except personal trust.

You can definitely expect to be up against small groups, which generally means you should prioritize a means of escape, but you can't rely on having any allies yourself to back you up either.

You might be more precise, but you're not fast or strong. You can't get through his armor or dodge out of the way, and you need to be able to attack many times to equal his one blow, chance isn't on your side.

Despite increasing attack speed, Skill does not increase the speed of your individual attacks.

Also, accuracy/precision has no role in how likely you are to hit. Only the speed of individual attacks, which still isn't modified by skill.

I see what you mean. I guess it really boils down to how the CYOA creator described the stats.
I would of preferred it if he made it so Strength governed heavy weapons like greatswords and axes, Intelligence affected magic and Skill affected light weapons like normal swords, bows and katanas.

That way you would have 3 direct damage dealing stats for all types of weapons

I think i like it more as a Strength*Speed*Skill=damage, with Int and Def both contributing in their own way (via strategy or "tanking" and attacking through).

Unfortunately that does lead to a severe case of MAD, which magic and especially transformation characters can just ignore.

Too many power gaming builds. Made a punch Noble that dabbles lightly in damage and healing magic with a lot of mobility options. I also have an vague ancient fist weapon thing. I still don't understand why weapons don't have a gold or renown or whatever section to buy items like this. Weapons aren't skills. Why is a skill tree giving you weapons or armor or anything not a skill?
