So I'm a big fan of Wyndham's Day of the Triffids. I want to run a game starting with the Blinding with the players running a group of survivors and trying to keep going. However I'm not sure how to prevent early encounters with Triffids (before the players become paranoid) without resulting in one or two player kills. At the moment I'm considering letting players have tag along companions or multiple characters but it seems forced or cumbersome. Any ideas?

Firstly, glad to see another fan. I love Day of the Triffids, and Wyndham's work altogether.

I would just orchestrate some close encounters with Triffids scripted for them to barely succeed, maybe even with an injury of some kind.

It'll help set the mood of the triffid creatures.

Also, I wouldn't base too much of the story on protecting the blind survivors, like the book. Perhaps include that as a mission for a while, but diversify

No in space, its a specific region of space that is relatively close to Earth and it was the setting of the novel. The publisher's reader didn't care and said it was too closely associated with that book even though they were entirely different sub genres of scifi. Fuck Victor Gollancz. Fuck all readers for publishers.

Protip: If you are writing scifi don't expect someone who even understands even the most basic genre conventions to be reading your work. Most probably don't like being given scifi and fantasy to read either.

A big part of the setting is the idea that if you're equipped properly and no what you're doing then a single Triffid (or even a small group of them) is manageable. Even large numbers can be dealt with through planning.

The problem is they're more than capable of out waiting you and if they catch you unawares and unprepared then your pretty much screwed.

In the book Bill gets attacked by one early on. It's used up most it's venom but he only knows that due to him being a specialist in Triffids. The average person shouldn't consider them a threat until they experience it first hand.

I don't think so, if I recall, in the novel no knew where the triffids came from and they were already being farmed across the globe. Don't recall the triffid nebula being mentioned at all.
