Almost every competitive deck in eternal formats runs basics. Blood Moon is a thing, Path to exilie is a thing, fetching for less damage is a thing, wasteland, tecedge and ghost quarter are things.

Mono-color decks happen in all formats. Also for some decks, it's better to have a land that doesn't come in tapped or ping you for putting it on the field at the expense of being single color. I ran a few forests instead of Breeding Pools when I was running a RUG combo deck in RtR/Theros standard.

Legacy lists tend to run 1x of appropriate duals (unless someone is balling out of control or an old fag or running proxies), a fuckton of fetches and the rest of the lands are basics. Wasteland, GQ, Price of Progress, Blood Moon and Back to Basics fucking hurt man. And trust me, it sucks letting path of exile have no downside
Pauper relies on fetches, citp lands and the rest are basics.
