Presenting the Dread Prince, a Harbinger archetype themed on fear designed to fill a party defender role in the vein of the 4e Swordmage. Made some tweaks to bring him more in line with other initiators that have a climbing resource of some kind (Crimson Countess, Knight Chandler, etc).

Looking for feedback. I'd like Terror to be a bit more involved, but having trouble thinking of neat tricks to offer as it grows, and also where to insert them (I don't want to ruin mobility options by replacing Grim News, and I don't want to screw up attack math by stripping out Accursed Will)

Currently working on a Kitsune TWP Fighter. I got the build and mechanics down no prob, but I'd love some ideas as to what kind of backstory ideas I can gather. What would, in your opinions, make a kitsune fighter compelling? Or at the very least interesting.

Magus

I am that faggot who has to play a warrior-mage in every game. In my first Pathfinder game, before the Magus existed (and before I knew what I was doing) I made a Fighter/Sorcerer/Eldritch Knight. My very first RPG character was a 4e Swordmage. I even main Robin in Smash Bros even though I'm shit at that game.

Why does believing in a religion mean that has to be the ONLY thing your character cares about? Take the plot of any anime, like a search for a long-lost friend, or a promise to a mentor, or a search for something you're passionate about, and turn that into your character's motivation. Unless you're taking your religion so seriously that your god expects you to be a mindless drone, you can have other interests as character besides "KILL PEOPLE I DISAGREE WITH!"

>>
>>46152891
The mechanics as written are kind of ambiguous, but the intent from the FAQ is pretty clearly yes.

For example:

>A magus could even use the spellstrike ability, miss with his melee attack to deliver the spell, be disarmed by an opponent (or drop the weapon voluntarily, for whatever reason), and still be holding the charge in his hand, just like a normal spellcaster. Furthermore, the weaponless magus could pick up a weapon (even that same weapon) with that hand without automatically discharging the spell, and then attempt to use the weapon to deliver the spell. However, if the magus touches anything other than a weapon with that hand (such as retrieving a potion), that discharges the spell as normal.

Oh! I never shared this bit of Elsbeth trivia with /pfg/, have I?

Between studying magic, Elsbeth also fell upon stories of the proud Goblins as she grew up during the final decade of the Last War. Their prowess and and mythos added to her escapism to an emotionally neglectful upbringing, and years later she had learned Goblin culture, their languages, texts, developed a taste for their cuisine, and ultimately they served as her inspiration when taking the first step into her Martial Training.

>The GM has described and implemented the Goblins as Japanese

Save for lack of dawning the appropriate garb, Elsbeth is about as weeb as it gets.

Compared to summon monster, astral constructs are much better beatsticks but offer almost no utility. Except if you take http://www.d20pfsrd.com/psionics-unleashed/feats/advanced-constructs-psionic feat which I don't really understand why it is a separate feat, and use "utility" menu option, which turns astral construct into astral worker or astral meido with up to +16 on all skills.

Huh, it's actually +24 with either Boost Construct feat or shaper discipline, or +32 with both. If you are willing to spend 17pp per construct, that is. 1pp construct manifested by shaper with this feat has +6.

>>
>>46153732
>>46153753
It's not really about people thinking it's "bad" in power level (though it's another case of Paizo not being able to give martials nice things).

It's that people are annoyed about Paizo wasting all this alternate identity material on a single class without anything actually coherent to it outside of the alternate identity material, instead of creating feats or archetypes for use with tier 3+ classes that people actually want to use.
>>
>>46153732
>>46153753
Vigilantes are so redundant in its role, just as the Bard, UC Rogue and Investigator.
>>
>>46153769
That's silly. It's obvious they're eventually going to release Vigilante theme'd archetypes for other classes, like they release cross class archetypes for half of classes.

Just wait for the role to come up. The class does a lot of fun things, particularly being able to fool normal auto-find senses, the Everyman branch of social skills, and more. Even then it seems very fun.

>>46153771
If we're going to talk about redundancy most classes in pathfinder can be removed.
>>
>>46153753
It should get like, double the amount of talents that it has, to get it's cool shit quickly.

It's way better than I thought, all together.
>>
>>46153816

>>
>>46153799
>If we're going to talk about redundancy most classes in pathfinder can be removed.

Exactly. Its the same reason why I hate most of the occult classes as well.

They do not add anything unique or valuable to the group dynamic. And that's what I hate about most Paizo classes. They cannot contribute in a manner unique to their class and their class alone.
>>
>>46153829

>>
>>46153898
Emblem of Greed or Transformation can give them full BAB, Knowledge is Power gives them a nice CMD/CMB boost, strength boosting spells and shape changing ones can let them use multiple natural attacks rather than iteratives, so they can rely on BAB less and instead just get a high strength.

Eldritch Knight makes most of this a lot easier by letting them qualify for feats more easily and giving them some more health.

The father of mankind is literally called The Dark One. Darkness is /humanity/ (if that sounds like Dark Souls to you, congratulations; there's nothing original left on Earth). Humans were shaped from darkness and belong to it as much as they do to the day, and the light that should fill a human soul is not in opposition to the darkness but in harmony with it; that is, the flame of the Lore, the flame of knowledge, as guarded and embodied by Bridgette of the Three Sisters.

Notably, while all fey were beings to be cautious about, the Unseelie were the friends of man.

Unnnfooooortunately, the grey monks, followed by Victorians, proceeded to put their greasy minds all over everything, and the common modern perceptions about the Unseelie - not to mention the Christian imagery of darkness = evil, light = good - has dogged the myth ever since.

I'm thinking about playing a half-elf in such a way that they're the oppressed minority. What are some good slurs to throw at your fellow half elves and maybe even full elves whom you perceive who lost their cultural identity to the humans?

I cannot think of anything that is straight-up positive, but Nyx was considered neutral and possibly mildly positive in Greek mythology, depending on the cult. She was one of the primal beings, extremely powerful and supposedly beautiful, and the mother of many personifications, including light and brightness.

I cannot remember a fully positive one, though (as opposed to moon deities, since the moon represents light in darkness). I guess most people, especially ancient people, are uncomfortable about darkness since we don't function very well without sight.
>>
>>46154300
There's Nuit (Nut; pronounced "noo-t") from Egyptian myth/religion as well. Erebus, in Greek myth, was associated with the darkness found in places where no light shone (such as underground) and wasn't too bad a guy either.

Here's a thing: If your God demands regular human sacrifices, you're not worshiping any deity anywhere near the 'good' axis.

Again, heavy disclaimer because I don't know as much about Aztec worship as, say, Roman worship. I'm fairly certain not all the gods demanded human sacrifice, though.

Consider adding new enemies or adding templates to the existing ones. Never just straight up "add more health" always use templates, class levels, or redesign a creature you feel needs to be stronger.

An example would be adding a Zuvembie into a pack of zombies to animate them again and again, adding levels of rogue to a Barghest or filling a Naga's lair with traps. When i say redesign, i mean stuff like if there's a skeletal champion, maybe change it to a different undead like a mummy if you feel it would help make things more difficult.

i like weapon focus.
i know it's supposed to be bad and everyone tells me it's a waste of feat, but afterall if hitting dudes with a sword is 75% of your turns in combat and your team relies on you actually doing damage to them, even if not impressive damage, it should be worth it to do it more reliably for the entire day.
it should be half as good as power attack, which is not terribly bad given you have already picked the best feats, and probably better if you got less than full bab.

critical focus can be pretty good too if you use a weapon with a decent crit range.
>>
>>46154840

-divine mandate for a mission, recover an artifact etc...
-the head priest sent you to investigate/help stuff. you obey.
-in order to convert lot of people and do the good for your god, you should first convince people you are awesome and stuff and do good things to their land.
-you sinned/failed at the eyes of our god but he gave you one last chance to prove your worth
-quest for self-accomplishment/enlightment.This is the most likely one...becase many gods see adventurers, heroes, explorers are their exemplar members. just think about christianity and how much it preaches compassion and charity: it only makes sense that its saints and best priests are people like Mother Teresa and priests that help warzones, because that's the highest mission and thing their god calls them to do.

I'm musing about taking that feat list that's commonly houseruled to be given for free, and making it into "not really a feat" progression. One at level 1, one at every even level. List would include power attack &co, weapon finesse, combat expertise, skill focus, and probably all racial and teamwork feats. I.e. things that make no sense not to be able to do without a "feat", or that give too little benefit to spend a feat slot on.
Or maybe freebie list stays free, and not-really-a-feat list would be used for almost fluff stuff like fluffy tails.
What do you guys think? Any suggestion for not-really-a-feats to include in the list?
>>
>>46154860
Welp.

At least we'll have our battle in the shade.
>>
>>46155328
Maybe a 'minor feats' list would be good?

So you get some minor feats, the list of which is populated by flavorful stuff and minor stuff? Maybe get a minor feat every even level, to contrast getting major feats every odd?
>>
>>46155328
start from here.

overall no character should receive more than 3-4 free feats over 20 levels in regards of a single combat style.
if you key certain free feats to BAB you might end up with very versatile fighters that can expend some feats to become "switch-hitters", which might be a bit weird to look at since we are used to elfs that learn to use a bow and stick to it for 20 levels, but definitely more fun for everyone.

I'd be really careful with what you consider a non-feat. Teamwork feats are a good example: Normally they're not really worth taking because for them to be really worth it, all of the party members need to have them and chances are that it's a waste of feat for at least ONE member of the party. But if you start handing extra teamwork feats, suddenly there's almost no reason for everyone in the party NOT to take the same feats. Phalanx fighter is a pretty good bonus to all saves, coordinated charge is pseudo-pounce, etc. There are some quite potent options available there.
>>
>>46155553
Outflank is nice as heck. Escape Route too.
>>
Why aren't daggers monk weapons?

Why do monks get proficiency with daggers if they aren't monk weapons?
>>
>>46155328
Power Attack is a non-feat now?

Personally I prefer the other method; you pick a bunch of feats that are taxes for too many things (Weapon Focus, Improved Unarmed Strike and Combat Expertise are the main offenders IMO), and instead of giving them to everyone for free even if the character has nothing to do with them, you make them bonus feats that *come with* any feats that would normally require them. Makes more sense since they wind up as passive benefits of the special focus of the character, who has learned to actually do something new with his feat and is thus also better at unarmed fighting or using the chosen weapon.

Point Blank Shot is decent enough that it should just come off the prereq lists but not be given for free.
>>
>>46155615
Wouldn't a more pertinent question be to ask why they aren't actually proficient in all monk weapons?

Just to doublecheck, since I'm honestly not sure what this party is really gonna come out to CR-wise, what do you all think?

Five person party, level 5, gestalt game, houserules that give a few minor feats for free (Combat Expertise/Power Attack/Heighten Spell and the other toggles), most content is allowed.

Party is: A human fighter/warder dual wielding tower shields with a few 3pp feats to basically be Braum from League of Legends, a Sylph caster with lightning damage and some Aegis stuff, a synthesist summoner, a Fist of Nature style druid/initiator, and an undecided character. The Aegis is Arcanist/Aegis, last I remember.

As far as I can see, they're about APL 5 base+1 gestalt+1 from numbers+~1 from houserules and crafting/optimization stuff, so vaguely about APL 7-9 effectively.

>>46155656
That aside on PBS's value makes me want to remake Weapon Focus to be not required by anything but actually a decent feat option to take in the same way. Like just make it +2, or the same +1 to attack and damage as PBS, or +1, +1 every 5 levels.

And then Combat Expertise, you say gives you the active option to go -2 attack for +2 AC, and has an always-on passive benefit of +1/4 BAB to your AC in addition. And replaces itself and Dodge. And the active goes up to -3/+3 at 8th, and -4/-4 at 16th. Or shit, just gives you Int to AC if you attack with a weapon or take total defense.

IUS should just be Superior Unarmed Strike. You get usual benefit but can also deal damage like a Small Monk.

Since nobody else answered this, I might as well.

Monk of the Silver Fist is fairly nonstandard for a monk. They still punch stuff, but they wear gauntlets while doing it. They've got a focus on tanking, specifically bodyguard style tanking. So they can hit hard but are largely focused on defense.

Aurora Soul is a high magic monk. Very Naruto or Avatar the Last Airbender. They can punch with the best of them and are WIS based but they also do lots of teleporting, elemental magic and other pretty explicitly magical/supernatural things.

Steelfist Commando is pretty mundane as far as monks go (they have Riven Hourglass as of PoW:E but even their supernatural stuff can be easily refluffed to just being /really/ good at martial arts). Their CHA focus and Gambits lend them towards being sort of an "arrogant Kung Fu guy" in that they're brash, cocky and reckless, but they can definitely back it up.

So they're all pretty good at being monks, just different kinds of monks.

Silver fist is the most different, since it's focused on being a defensive class and protecting your allies. Also doesn't actually fight unarmed.
Aurora Soul is probably the most monk-like of the three, maintaining the idea of a light/unarmored unarmed warrior with a high Wisdom score.
Steelfist Commando I usually see more as a light armored Warlord. They can fight unarmed, but they don't have any unique synergy with it until 8, at which point it's still not such a huge change that it mandates not using a weapon. Frankly, Steelfist is my favorite warlord because I hate losing speed to medium armor, I love having unarmed as a backup option, and Commando Prowess is absolutely sick. It's Battle Prowess, doubled for CMB/CMD, that doesn't require a specific discipline be chosen. Oh, and you get Cha added to Stealth. For users of Veiled Moon who are going for Dex builds, that means you net 2 ability scores to your stealth checks.

Right now I'm thinking most feats that doesn't apply a bonus would be ok. So Power Attack is free, Deadly Aim, Precise Shot, Improved Combat Manuever feats, etc.

People would count as having Weapon Focus and Point Blank Shot, etc for prereqs, but not just for free +1s.

In that case, you can try magus 4 / warder 1 / bladecaster, but bladecaster is imo kinda meh, especially feat prerequisites. I'd probably go for martial training 3 or 5, levels on which you get stances.

You had one job.

Weapon Finesse. Deadly agility should stay as a feat, as military training.

Great, thanks. I'm not super familiar with the stuff in PoW (only played ToB before) so I didn't really know my options.

No, No. The -10 is from the Hopping. I'm hoping to help the hopping.

I don't like giving away Power Attack and strong archery feats for free, they're quite good enough to warrant the feat cost and those two weapon styles in particular are already just head and shoulders above the others. Maybe cut them out of prerequisites instead since too many totally-unrelated things require PA or PBS.

Note that your initiator level from martial training is affected by your initiator attribute, which is key attribute for discipline skill of the discipline you select with it. So you are likely aiming for Flux or Razor (spellcraft), Mirror (craft), or something with acrobatics. It's not hard requirement, but you might quality for next feat in martial training line later if it's not the case. Razor have potential interactions with Hexcrafter, specifically curses.

That's for splash weapons with a primary target. Scatter weapons don't HAVE a primary target.

What are decent items for a low-level party with ~1500gp each? I sent them to the shop to gear up but nobody including me knows what to gear up WITH at that level so we just skipped that part of the session last time.

Masterwork weapons. Scrolls or mats for them. Cloaks of resistance.

This. Ioun Torches or a Campfire bead are also a good idea, or a mithral chain shirt, or a +1 armor.

Friendly reminder that Word of God states that you can take a discipline with a skill you want to key off and take a Tradition to swap it intothe discipline you actually want, leaving you with the initiator attribute of the first discipline. This can get you basically any attribute you want (Though, because there are no Con skills, and no discipline keys off Climb or Swim, you'd have to have another way to get those to a skill a discipline DOES use).

It's dumb, and it REALLY makes me wonder why they didn't just say "pick whatever initiator attribute you want", but it is confirmed RAI.

The pfg channel on irc.rizon.net.
It came up when someone wanted to get int based initiator modifier for a non-int discipline.

I asked the question for a Psion who wanted to get Distorted Clock stance.
