It's the one O-12 ruling that we're all thankful for. I still think it would be a better idea to require all diplomats to be shirtless, though.

Hey guys I'm interested in starting Affinity and I'm interested in several of the factions (CA, Tohaa, Military Orders, USAriadna, JC of Corregidor) but I wanna make sure I pick an army that I'll enjoy playing. A lot of the factions sound and look cool, but it's hard to tell what strategies are viable/enjoyable. I played a bit of 40k and liked the Dark Angels the best for their flexible deployment, fast units, and heavy infantry. Any suggestions you guys might have for picking a faction and what models to start with would be appreciated.
>>
Does anyone use a Karakuri with a combi rifle as Pi-well? I just realized how appropriate the model is for it.

For someone who used to be massive into the game but had to drop out just before N3 dropped what are the main changes?

I also noticed Combined has gotten lots of EI drone specific additions. Looks like I can make an army without monkeys, bugs or shavastii
>>
>>46149871
Bugs got squatted man. They're all dead.

Hacking got better. Coordinated orders and Command Tokens became a thing.

I don't really know, I only got into this in N3 and I still haven't played a game.
>>

>>

>>46149871
>EI
There's going to be a new sectorial in the next HS. Onyx First Contact Force. It's got a splash of Morats, Umbra, Symgaa, and probably some Shasvastii. But is seems to be mostly EI constructs
>>
What am I most likely to see at a tornament to look out for? I've compiled this list:

Yu Jing: vanilla and JSA
Aleph: steel phalanx
Ariadna: Camo spam/dogfaces or USA
PanO: Vanilla, NCA, and MO
Haqqislam: vanilla?
CA: Vanilla
Nomads: Corregador

I'm new to the game and mainly play against YJ, but am getting a few friends to make some test lists to play vs me, we're thinking about, from highest to lowest priority: Ariadna, Corregador, Steel phalanx.
>>
>>46148870
It might be best to look at the faction breakdown on 1d4chan, and most of the non-sectorial armies have a wide enough variety of troops that they can suit most styles. How competitive you want to be in the ITS tournament, however, may constrict your choices. As for what you've mentioned in terms of playstyles:

CA: Elite units with superlative options and funky special rules.

Tohaa: revolves around the usage of triad link teams (otherwise something that only sectorial armies get) and symbiote armor (some Tohaa units get an armor which, when damaged, results in a new troop profile, thereby giving extra survivability). Very order efficient army, extremely deadly in the reaction turn, and good access to bio-tech stuff, but somewhat lacks the breadth of long range weaponry that other factions have.

Military Orders: thematically similar to spess mahreens, though, remember, Infinity is a shooting game first and foremost. Not the most competitive in tournaments, though they can be fun to play.

USAriadna: USA USA USA! Ariadna in general is quite strong competitively because they can generate enormous order pools and make opponents waste orders discovering camouflaged troops. USAriadna troops are slightly better armored than typical Ariadna troops, and has access to gear and special rules on cheap troops that would otherwise be on quite expensive ones in other armies.

Corregidor: relatively well balanced, as is Nomads in general. By that I mean they have strong units in the ~20 point range (a few armies, most apparent in Yu Jing, but also in Pan-O have fairly week ~10 point cheerleaders and 30-60 point killy units, but relatively poor middle-of-the-road choices)

For any faction usually their starter set is a good place to start, though it'd help if you decide on an army first.
>>
>>46150477
>Aleph: steel phalanx

Phalanx is popular, but you'll see vanilla Aleph too. It isn't bad by any means.
>>
>>46148886
I use Karakuri as Kuang-Shi. It makes sense (suicide robots with v:dogged) though it's certainly less grimderp than strapping bombs to lobotomized prisoners. Also Kuang shi models are ugly.
>>
>>46150477
Haqq, QK you will see QK. You might see HB.
Nomads, vanilla
Ariadna, FRRM isn't rare by any means.
>>
>>46150536
I just have a very limited time span (2 weeks) so I have to prioritize. I don't see vanilla aleph throwing as many curveballs play-wise as steel phalanx will.

>>46150576
Do any of those play very differently from their other variants? Again, limited time span so I need to prioritize curve ball lists.
>>
>>46150741
>I don't see vanilla aleph throwing as many curveballs play-wise as steel phalanx will.

What? Phalanx is limited compared to vanilla.
>>
>>46150477
I wouldnt prioritize armies over another. Just tailor your lists to the missions, and try to include answers to as must stuff as possible mostly AD, Infiltration, TO/Camo, etc etc

But specific things to you should be wary of (some of which you already named): Ariadna Camo Spam and Parachutists. USARF infiltrating Grunts and RVZ. Haqqislam/QK: Kum Bikers, Zulekya, Ghazi Muttawiah, QK link flexibility. Steel Phalanx: ODD, Phoenix.
>>
>>46150827
Well vanilla will be more varsatile, but I'm used to playing vs that, not a bunch of link teams with ODD and achilles.

>>46150867
Thanks, I'll look into those. I just want as few curveballs as possible, so memorizing some basic compositions of camo for ariadna for example.
>>
>>46151000
I see what you mean, but to be honest, vanilla and phalanx abuse the shit out of Achilles.
>>
>>46149871
Lot's of mechanical changes. There is a general removal of mechanics which allowed unopposed rolls. Combat camo and shooting through smoke no longer allow first strike but add negative mods to opponent response. Unless you have holoprojectors, have set up a multi levelled ARO, Berserk, shooting someone in the back outside of 8", or shooting someone in melee, it's hard to force unopposed rolls. Guided missiles now allow you to dodge, at a -3 penalty.

Melee in general has been improved, with melee specialists starting at CC 19, usually with some way to bump it higher or decrease your opponents odds. Any stat values over 20 now give you a bonus to your effective roll and if that bonus plus your roll = 20 or more, you crit. For example Shinobu at CC 25 and MA3 (+3 mod for you and -3 mod for your opponent) gets + 8 to your rolls and crits on 12 or higher. It still is expensive to melee but now there is reward for the risk.

Loss of LT just forces everyone irregular unless they have the veteran skill. No more just 2 orders.

Hacking is greatly expanded with different gear getting different programs. Hackers can also give bonuses to remotes and HI.

HI, except for the biggest slowest models are now 4-4 and mostly went down dramatically in price. Multi weapons are no longer crap and stupidly priced, granting shock or AP at full burst (AP or DA in the case of MSR).

Weapon ranges now are differentiated making the HMG no longer just the best gun at everything. Shotguns are now amazing and LS are not crap. Templates no longer allow cover bonuses for armor but no longer impart a -6 to dodge.

Impetuous models no longer can get partial cover but do not have to take their impetuous movement. Extremely impetuous models are like old impetuous in that they must charge forward unless you spend a regular order on them.

Point costs in general shifted downward with most non Ariadna lists hitting 11-14 orders. The command token mechanic allows big small splits to work well.

I'm curious, what was the old HMG rangeband?

Ok USAriadna seems pretty fun. The starter pack doesn't seem that great though. All they have is rifles and flamethrowers. What would be some good things to add from the starter? Things like snipers or the motorcycle unit seem cool, but I'm not sure what is good.
>>
I feel like I have a very low skill ceiling with NCA. I was routinely beating my friend but he's been getting better and I feel like it's hard to keep up when he has options like smoke, and infiltration. Should I just expand out to Vanilla or play a different army?
>>
>>46152928
But learning how to adapt is literally half the fun of playing a theme.
What are you running? What is he running? You still have options to deal with smoke. How is his approach with infiltration giving you trouble?

Pretty standard NCA, list I ran was pic, it seems pretty standard. We played 3 games today, won 2 and lost the last one soundly. The plays I'd cite as being above my level skill wise included:

-Forcing AROs by moving within ZOC, then moving into b2b to lock units up.
-Positioning Shinobu right by a mine (20x20 objective) so I wouldn't use my sensor to detect her in hidden deployment. (she proceeded to slice a nearby swiss guard in half the following turn)
-Using smoke to intuitive attack nanopulsers through in my face while I can't do anything about it.
-Keeping a Yan Hao HMRC prone for the first 2 turns so I couldn't shoot it at all, then just wiping out half my order pool when any threats to it were gone.

I realize I could have avoided a few things by thinking a bit more about my movement, but it seems that without the fancy toys, my ceiling of plays is severely limited, and NCA felt like a "beginner's army" for the first time to me. Can cover most of the bases, but can't go much further than point and click.
>>
>>46153187
My advice would be to git gud. Don't blow your load too early when revealing TO troops, keep some Auxilia around as corner guards, and make sure to set up good ARO traps (NCA is meant to be a defensive army, after all). NCA is going to get some infiltration action soon, so get ready for that.
PanO in general has limited options outside of point and shoot, but that just means you need to master the art of getting in position to point and shoot. Anticipate your enemy's actions, then pour bullets down their throat when they take those actions.
>>
Anyone got the extra big version of the infinity butts compilation? I seem to have lost it.
>>
>>46153187
WEll looking at that list, personally I would drop the swiss hacker since you're rocking the deva, and one of the fusilier heavy weapons if not both and invest in some Bolts with Drop Bears/shotties/sniper or a Hexa sniper to match some of his shenanigans and give you some lengthy ARO coverage.
>>
>>46154741
Terrible idea in my experience. Smoke/msv2 combo can outright win you games. With a full link team you can at least generate enough presence from the first round to make the wanker think twice about overexposing himself. Bolts aren't going to do anything, except suck the points for much needed Auxilia fodder.

>>46152928
You can try with Garuda or Peacemaker to take out the smoke or MSV model. It's a risky and difficult move, but beats being on the reactive side.

I'm a big fan of Pathfinders and Fugazi. Unfortunately you need to have larger order numbers to get any real value. Two Pathfinders, two Fugazi with some other model (Garuda, Peacemaker or just doctor and engineer) for instance can make a decent second group on a budget. Although buying REM isn't cheap.

Lastly, unless you can't afford, invest into different army. Definitely don't invest into vanilla unless aesthetics reasons. NCA does well but it's kinda spammy and predictable. Against certain lists, like msv/smoke you also need to have a bit of luck to get an angle and pull off the key models before they murder everything in their LoS. It's definitely easier to abuse combos than dealing with them.

Best of luck either way.

Does remote spam work? Still kinda new and playing with the army builder is fun
>>
>>46155166
>vanilla
Not with that attitude. Go ISS or go home. If the thought of AVA:3 on Husong and AVA:2 on Lu Duan and Rui Shi doesn't make you hard, you aren't ready to truly spam remotes. Your army's got far too many meatsacks as well. The Kuang Shi can stay since they and their handler synchronize well with Rui Shi, but those supportware hackers take up valuable SWC that could be spent on more remotes.

I find ISS and Nomads to be the best for remote spamming, but NCA/vanilla PanO aren't bad either.
>>
>>46155166
I think ISS can do REM spam better than vanilla. Higher AVA of the attack REMs, Sophotect, linkable Khuang Shi, basic HDs with fairly decent Hackers.

Otherwise go NCA or Nomads. Also look out for EVO HDs in HSN3

I like the old model significantly more than the new beastwars one. Its also much cheaper Currently play jsa and looking to try vanilla. by tossing in kuang shi and getting at lest a rui shi for use in both.

Besides remotes, what are vanilla YJ staples? I see a HRL Raiden, farily often and and the yan hao with b5 looks fun.

>>
>>46155331
Su Jians can gain Fairydust. They have higher ARM, BTS, and STR than any of the REMs which will be useful for extended firefights. Also remember that since they are HIs, they can do things REMs can't do like Cautious Move or Prone.

Definitely consider them especially since they definitely fit the theme of a mechanical army. An army that forces the opponent to spend orders to permanently remove models off the board because of nearly everything has 2 unconscious levels. And absolutely keep your Sophotect safe

>Besides remotes, what are vanilla YJ staples?
Daofei, Yan Huo, Hac Tao and now Su Jian are wonderful killer units. Guilang, Kuang Shi and Tiggers are really great too. Ninjas, Aragoto, Keisotsu and Raiden are still very useful in vanilla.

>>46155514
Haramaki without a link look significantly worse and probably worth their relatively low cost.

Spitfire of Shotgun Su Jian?

Is b5 Yan Huo the only one worth taking? It looks significantly better than the 2 ML
>>
>>46155601
Haramaki are entirely meh in vanilla. They're very much a sectorial unit.

Shotgun costs no SWC and looks pretty good on paper, but I haven't tried it yet so I dunno. Spitfire is solid.

HRMC for an attack piece, ML for a defensive piece. MULTI HMG if you can't decide. The ability to deliver multiple EXP templates should never be underestimated.
>>
>>46155601

Depends on how much SWC you got, but generally more shots are (usually) better. So Spitfire I'll say, and it has a heavy pistol if you REALLY need to shoot (flamer aside) something up close. Also makes knife pointless i guess.

Also, generally the HMC is best for most situations, since it does have a DA shot as the minimum for AROs assuming he's not in suppression fire.
>>
>>46155652
>The ability to deliver multiple EXP templates should never be underestimated.
I run a full Haramaki Link with 2 ML, They're great. I guess just a bit spoiled by having to pay so much in vanilla for the same thing.

More dakka sounds good, and that scupt looks better on the yan anyway. With swc taken up with a yan and rems, not sure if I can fit it in.

Can I speculative fire / fire a missle at the ground so it covers a camo marker nearby?
>>
>>46152325
So, a good chunk of USAriadna troops don't have models yet (which tends to be a trend with Infinity), but the Grunt pack is good for the HMG and sniper.

Mavericks and Devil Dogs (and presumably Desperados) can be useful if you want extra front-line pressure, and units like the 112 and Dozer can be added eventually for specialist options. Foxtrots are quite useful in competitive play (18 points for BS11, WP13, FO, camo, and infiltration is dirt cheap; most other factions have to pay around 30 points for similar options). Hardcases aren't fantastic, even though their mini is very good.

To be honest, most of the models and profiles in the USAriadna lineup are quite solid so play around with listbuilding.

Print them out either through the download site of infinity or the token generator site in the OP, use a 1" hole puncher to cut them out, laminate them with something (usually these off amazon http://www.amazon.com/Smart-Sticker-Adhesive-Stickers-Pendants/dp/B015A3U4UM/ref=pd_sim_sbs_201_17?ie=UTF8&dpID=51QXVJEhimL&dpSrc=sims&preST=_AC_UL160_SR159%2C160_&refRID=19B5SKK7F32JK4HMHQBB). With a couple of Guilang already in my collection (and a second sniper and a Daofei in the near future as part of a second-hand deal) I've been looking at getting a Raiden for some more variation in the camo mindgames.

The rocket launcher version seems like the best deal to me so far.
Would you guys agree to that or recommend one of the others?

I got the Raiden HRL too. To me it's not only the better looking model, but the best bang for buck. The 8 points for the spitfire seems to me that it could be spend elsewhere, like on a hacker, repeater remote, another line troop, or something.

The HRL Raiden is a fantastic piece. It's, especially for vanilla, a cheap, relatively consistent template that can be kept pretty safe if you don't get the first turn.

As for the other options, YJ has terrible MSR options and the Raiden doesn't really change that. Yes, it's fairly cheap, but it has no defensive options and no MSV. The spitfire version is problematic because the Raiden is 4-2, and that's just not good enough, especially in a relatively order inefficient army such as YJ. If you *need* a X-visor Spitfire, you can take the Crane Agent (though remember, that profile does not have the very, very useful Sensor ability)

Guys, are these dudes from the CA army really worth it? I'm planning on getting a box of them, but I'm not sure, since they're pretty fucking expensive for me, living in south america.

I'm also planning on getting Spec Ops Corax to proxy as a Speculo Killer, since I hate her model so much.

Morat Starter
CA Starter
Box of Daturazi
Box of Yaogat
Box of Unidrones
Zerat sniper
Old HMG Sogarat (proxying as engi, since I don't like their models very much)
Suryat with HMG (love this model)
Kornak
Anathematic

I'm getting that Spec Ops of the Shasvastii to proxy as Speculo, then a Noctifer with spitfire cause I fucking love the model, the Dr Worm box, and the "new" Sogarat with HMG

I'm thinking the drones or a pair of blisters maybe... or another box? Morat Vanguard specialists?

Each link team is a group, Phoenix and Eudoros + 2 Myrm's are my starting team, then some cheap Thorakitai FO's & Sgt. How do you magnetize minis? Is it too difficult? Does it require special tools?

I mean, I don't even drill holes in the minis to glue them. I just cutt off the extra parts and smooth the mold lines and then just glue them.

Skip the magnetizing then. Also, remember to wash your minis (warm water + dishsoap. bc of mold release agent which affects glue/paint) before assembling/priming, and if you have connection problems score (scratch with sth sharp) the joint surface so glue has more rough stuff to latch onto.

Hey guys.

Don't you think Infinity has come to have too many special rules? I mean, it started off fine, you can't have a game like this without special rules. But with every rule expansion they add a ton of them once again. A lot of rules have explanations that go on and on for one page or more, and the interactions between them are becoming more and more complex.

That's not what Infinity was like in the beginning. The focus on the game is on it's reaction system, which is one of the best i've seen. It keeps you on your toes and making decisions everywhere and all the time. That's huge.

But with so many special rules to remember, I feel it's becoming less and less noob friendly, and more focused on "who remembers the most special rules"

I mean, it's no attack to its players or the game itself, I'll keep playing, I love the game and the minis. But don't you think it's losing its focus?
>>
>>46176721

I think they could go and turn more special rules in levels of other special rules, rather than being separate rules.
>>
>>46176721
Nope. I want moar. But I don't like when skills are really lose to each other and do similiar things.
>>
>>46176721
For the most part they do at least serve a purpose.

A lot of other wargames have a similar or even greater number of special rules, but applied as unique rules to each unit. Infinity at least keeps them generic.
>>
>>46176721
Some of it could definitely be streamlined, but there's not really that much bloat for most of the special rules. I'm not a fan of those newfangled biometric visors, though. Holoprojectors and impersonators aren't a big part of the game like camo is, so having equipment just to counter them seems dumb to me. There's no shortage of games where no holos nor impersonators are on the table, making the visor useless. Whereas most games have a mimetic unit at the very least.
>>
>>46176875
Yeah, and also you can do it normaly though even if it has disadvantages, so the game is less special rule reliant.
>>
>>46176721
Funnily enough I had this discussion about a week ago. Short answer, yes. When I want to play a game I want to focus on playing it rather than stressing on the number of rules I need to keep in mind. PC is much better in this role as you can get short explanation on the skill, damage and so on. It also frees you from calculating modifiers, it's much more fun to focus on what you think it's the best decisions and seeing how they play out rather than focusing on MOD stacking or striping. It's been a year, since I last someone trying to pull a flank to get an advantage rather than abusing camo or smoke/msv2. Ironically Infinity likes to present itself as interactive game/always your turn, however veteran/knowladgable players will know how to stack MODs so well that's not unimaginable to see ARO being completely meaningless.

I too love the minis and loved playing during N2, the modern meta and CB's intention to introduce more crazy rules, don't sit really well with me.
>>
test
>>
>>46176721
I don't quite like some of the rules that have roughly the same effect, like a few of the hacking programs or equivalents to Chain of Command, but I don't think it's bloated. It adds enough flavor. Luckily quite a bit of it is standardized, with a few exclusive rules like Mechanical Transmutation or Tohaa armour that adds some faction specifc flair. The only complaint I've heard two players say was that they wished that Command Tokens had faction specific effects. I don't understand their views.
>>
>>46176721
The rules bloat is fine. It's on the level on the whole and adds some faction and unit specific flavor.

It's just a bit of a curve to get over before it clicks because in many instances the names aren't intuitive.
The weapons are a blatant example of that.

What is a "combi-rifle"? What is a "Molotok"?

Another gripe is the rule book is just a mess with some rules points being italicized and bullet pointed with others being revealed in the rules examples.
That seems sloppy.
>>
>>46177697
The rule book is rubbish. Most of the rules are actually pretty simple, but CB does a piss-poor job of explaining them in that book. At least we've got a good wiki now and the translations are better.

As long as you have the weapon stats and special rules written down nearby (which you should, especially when just starting out) the fancy names like combi rifle and molotok don't mean that much. Just look at 40k, people learn that easily enough and half the wargear names explain shitall.

>Don't you think Infinity has come to have too many special rules?
Not really, though I suppose it differs from person to person. There's really not much to remember. You can get a general sense of what most units are by looking at the models, knowing what equipment they've got, and remembering just a few curveballs.

>>46177697
>combi-rifle
It's a future-tech rifle that is as light/small/easily maneuverable in tight spaces as a SMG but with the range and accuracy of a full-sized rifle.

>molotok
Russian for hammer. There are other languages in this game, you know. Guilang is simply Mandarin for "Ghost Wolf".
>>
>>46176721
I can empathise, but on the whole I find most of the special rules tend to either be fairly superficial in terms of complexity, or dovetail fairly intuitively into the core rules.

Now, for the newbie, I can see it being a bit daunting, but I've never encountered the issue you mentioned where it becomes more about remembering the rules than the tactics.

I think the biggest issue was clarifying the interactions, and presenting them rationally, and the wiki has been a huge help in that respect. Dodgy translations didn't help either.

But on the whole, I think they've struck a decent balance between keeping things fresh, and keeping things understandable.

Also, I'm trying to get my friend into the game and I'm thinking he'd like Tohaa or CA based on what I've seen and read. If I got those 8 models and my friend got a CA starter what would be good for him to pick up so we could play some 200pt games?

Everything's wrong! I don't like change!

Change it back! I'm scared.

As for legit criticism, I don't like that I can't quite tell which sections cover TAGs, REM, HI, SK, etc. like with the little dividers from Army V and how the order has changed.

I made my standard list with it rather easily enough, so it's not all horrible.

The thing about special rules is that there's a lot of general special rules and less army-specific rules. So there's less pressure to know how weird stuff like 'nid synapse or Necron resurrection works if you compare it to 40k as usual. It's more about learning combination of stuff, like that Intruder has MSV2 with Camo while Nisse has only Mimetism, but direct template weapons work on both for example.

>I can't quite tell which sections cover TAGs, REM, HI, SK, etc.

That's the biggest issue I think. From an aesthetic perspective; that a lot of unit symbols seem to be anti aliased with a white background in mind rather than having transparent edging makes them look shit. At the very least there should be some sort of glow so the black edges unit symbols stand out against the new background.

I'd say the usage of only the unit symbols has been an issue with the army builder in general for a while too, particularly for new players. Combined with their shit catalogue it makes it very hard for new players to get a feel for the units.

I feel like they should have attempted to combine the catalogue and the army builder some more. Maybe an info box in the current view that when clicked shows the units fluff and a few images, and a way of browsing the unit list by name.

This is correct. Also Armand was one of CB's rpg/comic characters from before the game. So Tohaa had been on the side for a while until Campaign Paradiso.

I looked into the new (and still kinda buggy) Infinity Army, where I also noted a bunch of new icons for most Imperial Service units.
Looks like all of those are getting the redesign love for HSN3.

Anything interesting (and probably not a bug) you guys have spotted there so far?

Is there a single army that Krakot profile shows up for right? They are clearly wrestling with the new code still.

Funny thing is the "American style" as presented here is also Poland style (just add some crates all over it for "spice"). Which is what makes cheap warbands and camo spam so strong in the first place: no threat from long range weapons, plenty of room to move around and shotgun or chainrifle a unit several times it's cost no problem. It also makes using TAGs or Combat Jump so difficult.
I feel sometimes people try to overcompensate for 40K's "two big buildings is enough" mentality and it goes too far the other way.
Also neither of those tables feature any special terrain or low-visibility/saturation zones from what I see.

I'd actually prefer a mix of terrain densities, think of it like contour lines of a map. Some areas are built up and provide a lot of cover, with partial cover kind of increasing as you get nearer to it, while there's still some spaces on the map with wide, more open firelanes. This gives most units a niche they can be comfortable with.

Some objectives in the open have people scrambling for smoke and cover, trying to nab objectives, while those in more dense areas turn into firefights and melees.

You can imagine it by building terrain that has buildings and more open spaces broken maybe by some large crates, but entering the buildings there's a significantly higher density of cover from the building's walls and partial cover from chairs and tables and stuff.

I went to a big tournament scene in Florida last weekend, and was noting the infinity tables were rather denser than I was used too. This came to mind.
