Pathfinder General - /pfg/

Nontraditional tiefling edition: what tieflings have you played that weren't plain-jane red-and-horny?

I've only played one tiefling, but they're pretty standard. Wings, tail, hermaphroditic (but that's not going to come up in game)

The tiefling I am currently playing in my just-started Hell's Vengeance game has the Pass as Human alternate racial trait, and the only hints of his heritage are his horns (they're SUPER flat and stubby, as well as protruding from his scalp) and generally are hidden by his rather short hair) and his amber-colored eyes.

My MOST non-traditional tiefling was this guy right here.
>>
Dirty trick seems like a pretty fun CMB, Can you take maneuver mastery for it?

So I'm working on a Lunar Oracle. I'm having trouble picking a Curse, and feats. What are the better curses and what feats will help me with spellcasting and going into melee at the same time?

>>
>>46140538
No. Same source bonuses don't stack.

Does a Molten Current user have anything to gain from Steady Hand and other boosts that increase range increment?

Is spell combat close enough two weapon fighting to use Thrashing Dragon maneuvers?
>>
>>46140658
>>46140617
What is this?
>>
>>46140688
Variant Multiclassing. You can sacrifice feats to get Barbarian class features, mainly Rage. the Lame Curse makes you immune to fatigue, so you can start and stop raging freely with no penalty, even within the same round, since it's always a free action to start or stop.
>>
>>46140686
Spell combat is not two weapon fighting.

The ranged current maneuvers don't gain anything from range increment boosts because they don't have a range increment, just a maximum range.
>>
>>46140093
Impossible, especially in Iron Gods. Why build robots when you can just brainwash them? Psychic is a close second.

Shackleborn tiefling, blue skin and lots of piercings, stitches and bodymods. Had horns at one point, big metal studs that screwed right into her skull.

Oni-spawn, hedonistic bloodrager. Blue skinned, rolled hermaphrodite on her alternate features. Built a harem of men and women alike, one of her favorites was a gnome alchemist girl who could brew some serious sake.

Hey there,
I'll be running my first Pathfinder session in a few weeks and I just got my rulebook. I only ever played Call of Cthulhu, and I'm a little bit confused about the setting/world of Pathfinder. I got the PDF of the Inner Sea Campaign Guide, but even that doesn't really tell me what I think I should know (for example, in which region would a beginner's group start off?). Am I just supposed to do all of that myself with Golarion in general being a kind of blueprint, or am I missing something here?
Also, anybody have a recommendation for a level 1 adventure? I'm fine with creating one myself, but I do feel a little overwhelmed right now.
>>
>>46140843
Get an Adventure Path. Curse of the Crimson Throne is good.
>>
>>46140843
>in which region would a beginner's group start off?

Any of them. It's not like an MMO "each area has level guidelines", the different regions in Golarion are just meant to be a pastiche of different fantasy themes.

Like how Osirion is Magic Egypt and Andoran is Magic America.

>Am I just supposed to do all of that myself with Golarion in general being a kind of blueprint

Yes.

>Also, anybody have a recommendation for a level 1 adventure? I'm fine with creating one myself, but I do feel a little overwhelmed right now.

Take a look at the Pathfinder Adventure Paths. Literally the whole point of them is to provide a campaign's worth of adventures.

GRANTED MANEUVERS AND ALTERNATE RECOVERY METHODS sidebar: these feats may only be used on expended maneuvers, or on withheld ones too?
>>
>>46140965
Only on expended maneuvers. Withheld maneuvers are still readied, just unavailable as is stated in the Mystic and Warpath's recovery methods.
>>
>>46140922
Curse if the Crimson Throne has an updated version coming out at the end of the year, otherwise you need to convert everything from 3.5 to PF. Minor, but lots of details.

Try an AP that already works in PF, and pick one based on what your group will enjoy.

I tried asking Gareth last night, but I wanted to get confirmation.

If I am playing an 18 Str Initiator with Martial Charge, and I charge a bad guy with my Nodachi and use both the Rising Zenith Strike and Momentum Crash, will my damage look like the following?

>(1d10+6)x2 + 10

Additionally, if the attack crits, will it then become

>(1d10+6)x2 + 1d10+6 + 10
>>
>>46141079
What did Gareth tell you the answer was?
>>
>>46140843
It's a kitchen sink setting. It's got everything, not necessarily one at.

Wanna kill giants overtop lost arcane kingdoms? You've got Varisia.

Wanna fight revolutions in not!France? There's Galt.

Fukkin casuals haven't even lasted a century yet. The Umbral Court has had an iron grip on their little patch of shadows, and been pulling strings all over Golarion, for TEN THOUSAND YEARS.
>>
>>46141124
Nothing, which is why I said I tried asking him.
>>
>>46141429
You also said you were trying to get confirmation, which I assumed meant he answered you already.

Fortunately, the answer is pretty simple. Your damage would be

>(1d10+6)x2

Because Rising Zenith Strike is a skill check maneuver and thus can't crit. Beyond that, extra damage from a maneuver is never multiplied on a critical hit.
>>
>>46141463
Okay. I'm just making sure, because /pfg/ had told me otherwise waaaaaay back in early 2015, and I just wanted clear, concise, 100% incontrovertible proof that my DM has every reason to be angry with me.

Should note that hideous laughter on a tiefling is a bit of a trap:
>A creature whose type is different from the caster's receives a +4 bonus on its saving throw, because humor doesn't "translate" well.

This isn't necessarily a bad thing if you're in an outsider-heavy campaign, or if you just happen to fight tough outsiders on occasion, but it's something to remember because it means humanoids are almost never going to fall for it.

Dervish Defender Warder 1 / War Scholar Monk 2 / Enlightened Paladin

DD Warder gets me:
BAB +1
Fort +2
Will +2
Combat Reflexes (scales off Int)
TWF
Int to AC (even with light armor)
Access to Thrashing Dragon for a +2 AC/Will stance

WS Monk gets me:
BAB +1
Fort +2
Reflex +2
Will +2
Scaling FISTS.
Wis to AC (even with light armor)
+1 insight to all attack/CMB rolls.
Wis to Initiative
Wis to all Int checks against monsters
Wis to damage (for 2 rounds/move action to do so).
Evasion (no damage if I make the reflex to halve)
+1 insight to damage for 2m.
Two free bonus feats (Dodge/?)

Enl. Paladin gets me:
Full BAB progression
Fort +2
Will +2
Charisma to all saves
Lay on Hands healing.
Lay on Hands condition cleansing.
Basic spell casting.
Immunity to Fear, Charm, Compulsion and Disease.
An aura that gives +4 to all of the above except Disease
FISTS treated as Good for bypassing DR
Cha to AC per level (even with light armor)
All Paladin levels stack with Monk for FISTS.
Smite Evil becomes a non-alignment restricted "Fuck that guy" that adds Insight to attack/AC/damage/saving throws.
Immunity to forced rerolls
The ability to ignore DR on the target of my Smite.
Bonded FISTS to automatically enchant them
An aura that lets me cause forced rerolls within 10ft to take the higher of 2.

This is mostly just a thought exercise, wondered what /pfg/ might have to say about it. level 4 stats coming in a sec.
>>
>>46143688
Monks have to be lawful, but retain their class abilities even if you multiclass. Paladin has to be Lawful Good, so we can do that easy. Warder can be anything.

Grab Dex to Damage/to-hit for your FISTS early on, suck it up and eat an 8 in con and strength in order to get 18 dex/14 int+wis+cha.

See if you can manage getting a Mithril breastplate (Medium armor made of Mithril is counted as Light armor for class abilities, etc.) for +6 AC from armor and a maximum of +5 from Dex (we'll only get +4 for now, but this can be changed later)

By level 4 we start with...

12 + 2d8 + 1d10 hp

AC: 26
Flat: 20
Touch: 20
(+2 with stance)

Attack: +8 (3 BAB, 4 dex, 1 insight) or +5/+5 (TWF)
Damage: 1d6+6 (+1 more temporarily)

Fort: +7 (6 base/ -1 con/ 2 cha)
Ref: +8 (2 base/ 4 dex/ 2 cha)
Will: +10 (6 base/ 2 wis/ 2 cha) (+12 with stance)

3 AoOs a turn.

So, thoughts? Anywhere I screwed up? Anything I can do to make this funnier?
>>
How can I re-implement some sort of racial level adjustment in pathfinder? It was admittedly, a sucky part of the 3e system, but it gave me some sort of baseline for how strong each race was supposed to be as a GM.

Last game kind of had me up a wall because I didn't enforce timetables on character pre-screening and someone showed up with a flying level 1 character.

Presenting the Dread Prince, a Harbinger archetype themed on fear designed to fill a party defender role in the vein of the 4e Swordmage. Made some tweaks to bring him more in line with other initiators that have a climbing resource of some kind (Crimson Countess, Knight Chandler, etc).

Looking for feedback. I'd like Terror to be a bit more involved, but having trouble thinking of neat tricks to offer as it grows, and also where to insert them (I don't want to ruin mobility options by replacing Grim News, and I don't want to screw up attack math by stripping out Accursed Will)

>>46144238
>Third, the spell prevents bodily contact by evil summoned creatures. This causes the natural weapon attacks of such creatures to fail and the creatures to recoil if such attacks require touching the warded creature. Summoned creatures that are not evil are immune to this effect. The protection against contact by summoned creatures ends if the warded creature makes an attack against or tries to force the barrier against the blocked creature. Spell Resistance can allow a creature to overcome this protection and touch the warded creature.

As you can see, there are a lot of ways to get around that

Clearly, GM needs to give it a rest. Start giving them some normal adventures with normal enemies. Save a princess from an evil wizard and his pet dragon. Free the kingdom from an evil curse. Slay the giant demon Al'Ghorro. Then let them retire to rest on their laurels, marry their sweethearts, be knighted and all that shit. And when they're all alone in their bedrooms, about to kick off their honeymoons...

Thousands of tiny spiders start crawling out of every orifice of their loved ones.

Looking at paladins. Archer paladins seem pretty damn good, but just not quite worth it because it pushes you into a 4 stat class (Str,Dex,Cha,Con). However the benefits of being a dex based character are huge.

I'm going to be an aasimar and taking at least three of the aasimar racial feats (Angelic Blood/Angelic Flesh/Angelic Wings), plus I'm giving up darkvision for the halo racial trait.

Essentially what I am asking is will Divine Hunter be worth it? Or should I just take Sacred Servant and be a melee paladin? If I do take Sacred Servant I am leaning towards taking the Travel domain but am super willing to consider others.

My stat spread is the following if I am melee:

Angel-kin Aasimar Sacred Servant/Oath of Vengeance Paladin

Str: 18
Dex: 14
Con: 14
Int: 10
Wis: 10
Cha: 16

>Feats
1st: Power Attack
3rd: Angelic Blood
5th: Angelic Flesh
7th: Craft Magic Arms & Armor
9th: Step Up
11th: Angel Wings
13th: Greater Mercy
15th: Ultimate Mercy

Any advice?
>>
>>46145530
Archer Paladins honestly don't need more than 12 Con. They've got D10 HD, Lay on Hands, good Fort saves and some of the best defensive class features in all of PF. They also don't really need more than 12-14 Str, so you're still mostly Dex and Cha.

Regardless, that melee character doesn't seem too bad. Nothing wildly special, but it'll work.

What tier 3 class/archetype combinations are there that can fill the same role as tier 1 classes? For example, is there a tier 3 combination that can fill a thematic/mechanical role like that of a wizard?
>>
Alright ladies and gents.

I've started on converting the vigilante archetypes to Spherecasting, but because I'm a pretentious little shite, I'm also adding and changing things.

Like splitting the Cabalist into Blood and Shadow, to match normal Vigilante having Stalker and Avenger.

Basic abilities so far with inspiration taken from existing classes, gonna start on talents for each specialization next.

Thoughts?

Tiers aren't about filling roles. They're about functionality, ease of challenge, and their potential to break the game.

>Tier 1:
>Capable of doing absolutely everything, often better than classes that specialize in that thing. Often capable of solving encounters with a single mechanical ability and little thought from the player. Has world changing powers at high levels. These guys, if played well, can break a campaign and can be very hard to challenge without extreme DM fiat, especially if Tier 3s and below are in the party.

>Tier 3:
>Capable of doing one thing quite well, while still being useful when that one thing is inappropriate, or capable of doing all things, but not as well as classes that specialize in that area. Occasionally has a mechanical ability that can solve an encounter, but this is relatively rare and easy to deal with. Challenging such a character takes some thought from the DM, but isn't too difficult. Will outshine any Tier 5s in the party much of the time.
>>
>>46145907
It depends a lot on what you mean by "filling a thematic/mechanical role". If you mean "guy in robes tossing spells around," then absolutely. If you mean "guy who solves all the problems with his magic," then not so much.
>>
Staves use the user's "relevant ability score" for setting spell DCs, which is presumably your casting ability score. But what if you're activating a staff using UMD? How do you determine which ability score to use? Or do you just have to use the minimum DC for the spell?

So I am playing a wizard in my groups long term pathfinder campaign. The group has been gaming together for about 15 years and I joined about 10 years ago. Our last long term campaign was 3.5 and lasted about 5 real years. I normally play fighter types so I thought it would be fun to be a caster. I'm trying to focus on spells and abilities that would be helpful to the party rather than glory hog. So things like buffing the parties 4 fighter types and battlefield control spells that help them fight and I took item creation feats to make magic items for the party since we can't really buy them often. Am I doing it right or wrong. Because the group had been together so long I figure they won't mind a tier 1 class but I don't want to be hogging glory for myself anyway.

It's because you can summon then for any use or occasion, even for easy out of combat utility, and you can make the choice for what you want when you summon it. It's on-the-spot utility and combat drones
>>
>>46147189
Lots of SM creatures have spells that the Summoner does not, and he can use those to solve problems he wouldn't be able to normally.

It's not a matter of "my summons clutter the field" or even "I have the most actions of everybody forever always," it's just the number of options available to them.

And all of this is ignoring the fact that the Summoner isn't even all that potentially gamebreaking compared to T1 classes.
>>
>>46147173
Nah, I checked there before I came here.
>>
>>46145907

Not all of them or not to the same level. That's the idea of T3 - you are either very good at one thing, or okayish at several. T1 is supposed to be awesome at everything.

>>46146998 - magical disguise of any sort should work, and I think undead anatomy can help in that regard.

Mesmerist had a trick where someone appeared to die, but it was a combination of a programmed image/invisibility.

>>46147042 Welp, 4 warriors and a wizard is going to be a bit weird. I'd definitely focus on control and crafting, there are already plenty of beatsticks and you will work best trying to enable them and taking care of the utility. Crafting will help spread the magic around, so it sounds like a great idea.

If you focus on buffing them and disabling the enemy so that they can kill it, I don't expect anyone will complain.
>>
Thank you guys. Versatility and utility, I see.

Just one more question. It's fluff-related. 'What' does Summon Monster summon? Like, IIRC it's not a 'real' individual outsider with flesh, bones, and name. Is it a copy or shadow or something?
>>
>>46147479
iirc, it's a copy of the creature. If it dies it just poofs out of existence. I can't imagine many creatures agreeing to be legit summoned to the material plane if they could get dead for real, especially for the low, low price of a spell slot.
>>
>>46147479
The simplest way to put it is that it's a real outsider in a fake body. An outsider's body and soul are the same unit, so as long as it still has a body somewhere (the plane it lives on), it doesn't have to care about dying: thus why summoned devils and such will never give you guff about being thrown into certain death fights.

>>
>>46147394
>ot all of them or not to the same level. That's the idea of T3

Well, yeah, duh.

I'm not looking for something as strong as wizard, just something that can more-or-less use the wizard spell list (or part of it) and works for a Gandalf or similar type character.

There's that Vigilante archetype that has 6/9 wizard casting, for example, but it being a vigilante adds a bunch of baggage.

Magician bard would almost work if it wasn't T2 itself, too.
>>
>>46147761
There are only so many words to represent a given idea in the English language. What would be the substitute, 'schools' from wizards? Traditions, as in martial traditions? Styles, as in style feats?
>>
"At 15th level, the warder is capable of turning an otherwise lethal blow and continue the fight. When an attack that inflicts hit point damage from a natural attack, melee weapon, or ranged weapon would reduce the warder to 0 or fewer hit points, she can make a Fortitude save (DC the attacker's attack roll) to deflect the attack to her armor or shield (light, heavy, or tower shields only), causing it to suffer the damage in her place (apply item hardness as normal)."

Does it mean that I can become indestructible if I have an adamantium, impervious and Hardened shield, as long as I manage the Fortitude save?

I have to wonder how in the fuck anybody's going to work a vigilante into a party of non-vigilantes.

Like, the Magical Child kicks ass with local heroes the Band Of the Crimson Falcon, but at other times the three established local heroes pretend they don't know the girl that looks almost exactly like Cuteness Collector Witch Meiling-Chan, and Mei-Mei's friends just sort of assume someone in the party is a relative, which is why they regularly drop by to give her increasingly contrived errands to explain her long disappearances?
>>
>>46147938

Adamantine is incapable of ignoring its own hardness. It only ignores hardness LESS THAN 20, non-inclusive, so it doesn't do diddly to hardness 20 or above.

Would it be worth taking the Expanded Knowledge feat to learn Astral Construct as a Wilder? It seems like it would have some useful utility, especially since you can use the surge to make a higher-level one than would normally be possible, or make a low-level one at no cost. Or are astral constructs lame? I never really got into psionics back in 3.5. I don't know, how do you even play a wilder.
>>
>>46147761
They made PoW to update the Tome of Battle material, which called their maneuver groups Disciplines. That's pretty much the only reason, really.

That said, you can ask the same question of WotC, since they named their maneuver groups Disciplines after 3.5 psionics had already come out.
>>
>>46147970
One thing I've always wondered, though... if I have the ability to treat the hardness of an object as a few points lower, do I then get to use an adamantine weapon to slice through adamantine stuff like butter?

I want to say yes... but I am, of course, a little biased.
>>
>>46148401
Probably, yep. Although keep in mind that enhancement bonuses also increase hardness by 2 for each +1, and the impervious enhancement doubles that increase. I'm not sure how often impervious is used ingame, but it's moderately popular in theory. With the cost of adamantine, a lot of it is probably harder than 20.

We have a bunch of new people in our play group and we're having a blast, especially since the GM is a cool guy. I wanted to try something different with my fighter in this campaign, so I wanted to do a bit of a hybrid *gasp* weapon build with him, focusing mainly on 2Hers and the crossbow.

What sourcebooks are you allowed? Path of War is generally good for it. Otherwise, ranger is the usual switch-hitter class I see recommended, since it lets you get feats for both weapons without waiting for ridiculously high levels.

Honestly though, ranged and especially crossbows are feat-intensive enough that I recommend you focus on the 2handing and break out the crossbow in specific situations. Like flying enemies, stealth, or some such.

I think our DM is allowing us to use any non-3rd party sources on the Pathfinder SRD (since nobody else owns the physical books), so pretty much anything that's official from Paizo.

So should I just skip feats for my crossbow altogether? Because I know that you don't need to invest too much into 2Hers to make them combat effective, so I might be able to squeeze a basic archery feat or two in there.

>>46148727
I think one of the archetypes with Martial Flexibility would be best for a Fighter who switches up his focus on the fly. You get to reassign your feats at will basically, so if you write down a set that works for one style and another set for a different style, that can be functional without actually losing effectiveness by splitting your character between them. Martial Master and Free-Style Fighter are the archetypes.
>>
>>46148890
I never said it was better or worse. Just that I wanted to play it. I don't judge other people's character choices. Not my character, not my problem.
>>
>>46148857
You want Power Attack for the 2hander, maybe furious focus, but yeah, that's pretty much it. For the crossbow, the problem is it's worse than the longbow in every way. Check Crossbow Mastery. You need 15 Dex and three feats just to reload it as a free action.

You need Str for the 2hander, and a lot of it. You also need Dex for the crossbow, and a fair bit of it. You also need every other stat except Charisma. Crossbows don't get stat to damage and don't get free reloads without jumping through a lot of hoops.

My recommendation is that you ask your DM if you can refluff a longbow as a crossbow and use composite longbow stats. If you can, grab the usual archery feats.

The only really practical way to make a crossbow build that works is to use a repeating crossbow, and get your DM to let you buy an efficient quiver version of a repeating crossbow bolt magazine (e.g., extradimensional space, holds 60 pre-loaded bolts at a time).

Otherwise all your actions and feats get eaten by the difficulties of reloading.

To expand on this, one of the primary balancers in different spell descriptions is the way their save works. The fact that you need different saves for different creatures is why you even need different spells in the first place; if a sorcerer could just snap his fingers and target a dude's worst save every time with Finger of Death or Phantasmal Killer, there'd be serious problems. As it stands, these spells are balanced against the fact that you can only target creatures that are weak to it.

A great example is Dominate Person. Imagine if a mage just swapped that Fortitude and went around dominating other spellcasters; leave it as will whenever he meets a warrior, and so on. It's not good design.

A question, good sirs, about the Summoner's ability.

> Aspect (Su)

At 10th level, a summoner can divert up to 2 points from his eidolon’s evolution pool to add evolutions to himself. He cannot select any evolution that the eidolon could not possess, and he must be able to meet the requirements as well. He cannot select the ability increase evolution through this ability. Any points spent in this way are taken from the eidolon’s evolution pool (reducing the total number available to the eidolon). The summoner can change the evolutions he receives from these points any time he can change the eidolon’s evolutions.

My question is, using this ability, would it be possible for a Summoner to take 1 point Skilled evolution for himself and get +8 bonus to his one skill?

This right here. I don't understand why it's so hard for people to believe that popular products like PoW or Ertw's beguiler might be discussed frequently and that every post mentioning it must be a paid advertisement in disguise.

Yes

Are you unaware of how hard people talk about the official paizo shit when it comes out too?
>>

It's likely just people who don't like it complaining because they can.

Opposite problem for me.
I like DSP's stuff because Paizo's releases has been a string of utter disappointment.

Occult Adventures is shit. Nobody in our table would ever find any purpose to roll an occult class.
Weapon Master's Handbook didn't fix fighters and threw in more stupid feat taxes.
Arcane Anthology gave us a "decent" rogue, but everything else is just so bad.
I'm sorely pissed off at how uselessly redundant the Vigilante exists when the Bard, Investigator and UC Rogue already exists and the Magical Child archetype stoked by angers further.
