So I was thinking of running a campaign set in Vvardenfell during the time period around Morrowind. Not necessarily the same period, but reasonably close that things are essentially as they were. And I was kind of wondering - what's the scale supposed to be like?

Like, how big are the populations of, say, Balmora, Sadrith Mora, and smaller places like Tel Mora or Tel Branora? Did any canon material like the pocket guide or whatever give figures? I mean, I know they're obviously larger than in-game, but how large? How 'urban' is Vvardenfell, considering it's also meant to be backwards and kinda hicksville.
>>
>>46144316
no need to dump them all, but thanks
>>
>>46144340
Outside of major settlements like Balmora and Vivec, most of the population had only come over in the last five years, including the empire.

Larger than the games, of course, but not as populous as the mainland.

Vvardenfell was, until recently, a temple reserve. It was opened for occupation only recently to the empire and great houses. That's why Dres and Indoril don't have land there, they weren't in the right positions economically or otherwise to do so during the first landgrab.
>>
>>46144493
It's probably reasonable, Vvardenfell is basically the thinly settled borderland you'd expect in old AD&D games. The core population areas are on the shores of the inner sea really.

http://host.conseiljedi.com/%7Ewolf/PGE2/pge2.pdf
A Million Eyed Insect Dreaming is easily the best Morrowind-related text.
>But once beyond the gateway they found only golden footprints, impossibly facing east in
a world without orients, until at last they dissipated into images of chitin-clad nix-mongrels.
Oh man.
>>
>>46147576
Oh, cool.

I totally agree. The entry for Cyrodiil all but sums up the series for me.

It's a paragon of lore as a whole.
>>
>>46147072
My main annoyances are the tendency to take far too much stuff as truth (especially when Vivec or Talos is involved), the weirdly cultlike attitude to MK, and to a lesser extent the feeling that quite a few of the writers assume the series started at Morrowind (maybe Redguard for the few who heard of it).
>>
>>46147954
What truth? It's not really up for debate what went down, at least in a broad sense. Things happened and then the events were changed by CHIM/dragon breaks.

Honestly, in terms of the lore the series did start with Redguard and Morrowind.
>>
>>46148019
>in terms of the lore the series did start with Redguard and Morrowind.
Get a load of this newfag.
>>
>>46148019
>Honestly, in terms of the lore the series did start with Redguard and Morrowind.
>this ebin maymay again

A lot of non-cosmological stuff is in and from Daggerfall. The dragon break is cute but it doesn't exactly take magic to justify a canon ending of "it was a clusterfuck and no one achieved their full objectives" when you have eight primary factions.

It's also people assuming stuff in Oblivion that was from the first two games was added strictly for them.
>>
>>46148147
Let's talk about fire golems. Really dig deep into that wealth of lore.

How about Orcs? Dreugh? Giants? No, wait, interesting things only happen to them post-Morrowind.
>>
>>46148182
It's pretty much only the names of things. Dunmer aren't still cockney Victorians.

The Warp in the West wasn't the only dragon break and it's not where they begin and end as a concept.
>>
>>46148278
Oh, I did forget, there is actually a lot of good Yoku lore from Daggerfall.
>>
>>46148278
>Dunmer aren't still cockney Victorians.
Skyrim obviously disagrees.

>>46148223
>Orcs
The Orsinium stuff is almost exclusively daggerfall with a bunch of off-screen development after the game.

It's a game about political intrigues between client kingdoms of the empire, not about the grandiose cosmological fundaments of the universe.
>>
>>46148368
>It's a game about political intrigues between client kingdoms of the empire, not about the grandiose cosmological fundaments of the universe.
Well then it's not a real TES game, now is it
>>
>>46148368
I was speaking too harshly earlier.

It's as silly to say the lore pre-Redguard was better as it is to say it didn't have any at all. There's no reason to expect people to confine their discussions to it.
>>
>>46148431
I'm not saying it was better, I'm just voicing annoyance at the fact that stuff that has obviously not been retconned is disregarded when it showed up in later games.
>>
>>46148476
How so? I can't think of any examples.

By it's own nature, as you mentioned, it would not be discussed as heavily.

Fucking hate it tbqh
Autistic rant:
Community is fucking awful
They worship every fucking piece of shit Kirkbride lays on the table and circle jerk over how "unique" and "original" it is despite at this point being the most overtly overblown attempts at creating whatever lore is totally edgy and different, and it only gets worse because they keep on licking his ass.
They constantly egg on how 'great' ESO's lore is despite it being, for the most part, terrible, which I honestly find hilarious given that the general opinion of ESO's lore was that it was shit until the Zenimax devs gave a bleak-bones reference to some MK shit and started doing AMA's where they said they 'totally loved C0DA guise!'
Being reddit, it's also a popularity contest where a select few people's posts are practically treated as actual lore. Whenever some lore-newb asks a question with no definite answer you can bet your fucking mother one of these people will come up with some fanon answer (which aren't marked fanon) that gets its ass thumbed up; not only connoting to the newfag that 'this is the actual lore-friendly answer' but also undermining the whole "C0DA value" of having people create their own conclusions as well. And this continues onto literally every post these people make, with their wacko speculative theories getting passed around as the truth, which also undermines creating your own conclusions and breeds a whole fucking army of psuedo-lorefags who think they know shit because they read someone's stupid theory despite probably never even having touched the basic source material of the lore.
The community claims to endorse the idea of C0DA yet dogmatically follow anything MK posts and half the shit the community leaders post, to the point where there is now post-C0DA lore (which was supposed to be up to your interpretation).
Also, no-one has the balls to give the slightest criticism to people's fanfictions because it's fucking reddit and 'muh downvotes'.

I could go on.

>>

>>
>>46149649
That's kind of the point. The entire guide is a feverish, half-translated transmission that was never meant to be read, the authors of which were executed for writing/collecting it. I think one of the ideas was that it was meant to be an "unfiltered" view of the provinces outside of the lens of imperial propaganda. It dips deeply into adjacent places and is basically an alternate universe Tamriel.

I guess that's what kind of pisses me off about it.
I think PGE1/PGE3 are great because they are basically the only chances we get to look at the general and practical lore behind a province.
I guess I'm fine with the idea of the Empire wanting a different perspective on their provinces (which would make MIED reasonable in a certain sense (though extremely heretical and likely to piss off a shit ton of Dunmer)), but some of the texts give very little actual information if not just flat out fucking ridiculous (and the Skyrim section is just completely filled up by the unreadable Thereabouts text).
Perhaps I would like it more if they used any other name other than "Pocket Guide to the Empire," as that implies this text was intended to be released to the public (and who in their right mind would compile this knowing that). It just doesn't make any sense to me.
Though I have to say that the Cyrodiil text is incredibly interesting, but way too fucking brazenly revealing to be included.

I only ever used it on Oblivion, but it was very useful for getting those Welkynd stones down from their higher pedestals without getting them stuck like when you shoot them down with arrows. And you can easily trip a trap that needs a pressure plate, or maybe a tripwire.

If you trust the talk page on uesp, there's a chance you might be able to grab a slow-moving arrow, or stop a trap from swinging into your face. And though it'd be silly, you might be able to move something in front of you to take a spell or an arrow for you.

It didn't get quite as buttfucked as one might think. Balmora was rebuilt relatively soon after the Red Year and the Argonians only really fucked up the south-eastern marshlands belonging to House Dres.

Great House Redoran is now the top dog in Morrowind rather than a house with easily bribed outlanders for councillors.

It's surprising how well it holds up. And best of all, it's child's play to run it at silky smooth 60 fps. It honestly makes it feel better to play than Skyrim or Oblivion in some ways. Even the fact that there's no physics system for items is kind of a relief, since you don't have to worry about accidentally knocking things over.

>>46156271
The only big problem I have with it is that it won't run cutscenes properly. They're all choppy or something. And the game itself isn't as smooth as I'd like - it's funny when I'd have to get a crappier computer just to run a game properly.

Aside from that, the game works perfectly fine. It's just hard to really get started, and even for a sandbox game you get very little direction as to where to start, and the world is so amazingly huge that you can't explore most of it until you at least save up for a horse, or can buy a boat. I really want to like it more than I do, but it's an amazingly different beast than anything I've ever played, and I just don't think I have what it takes to get anywhere in it.

>>
In Daggerfall, fast travel is essential. In previous games you can walk from place to place, but in Daggerfall you're expected to fast travel. The world isn't as handmade like later titles, nor is there anything going on in the wilderness. Further it would take days of real time to even get anywhere.
>>
>>46157959
Meant for >>46157728
>>
>>46157959
Thanks - but I did actually mean in-game days, even using fast travel. Some quests have to to be done within a time limit, as far as I can understand, especially the end of the main questline.
>>
>>46158075
Oh yeah, then getting a horse does shave some time, but not a lot. If you're pressed for time go recklessly and stop for the night at an inn. Those are the settings given to you when fast traveling. Stopping for the night at an inn costs pocket change, and recklessly means that when you get to your destination you're not guaranteed full health or fatigue, but you'll get there the fastest for sure.

In the shrine of the dead quest for Tribunal, you're told this:
>It is Almelexia's belief that the Shrine of the Dead can be reclaimed, and its power used for the good of Mournhold. Although traditional Temple doctrine disavows ancestor worship, the Lady believes that it has its place, and that the power to be gained from the ancestors is great.

However, Dunmer religion is obviously very heavily about ancestor worship. Can someone explain this inconsistency to me? Is it just Tribunal being too deep in Daggerfall lore?
>>
>>46159686
>The Ghostfence has forced many changes in the practice of ancestor worship. With the vast majority of ancestors' remains going to strengthen the Great Ghostfence around the mountain of Dagoth Ur, there are very few clan ghost fences in Morrowind. The Temple discourages such practices among the Houses as selfish. The upkeep of family tombs and private Waiting Doors has also fallen into disfavor, as very few remains have been buried in these tombs and shrines since the Armistice. In recent years most Dunmer venerate a small portion of their ancestor's remains kept at a local temple.
>>
>>46160001
That isn't "traditional temple Doctrine", Dagoth Ur's reawakening is fairly recent in mer terms. And it's not about discouraging ancestor worship but merely creating ghostfences from their remains instead of sending all remains to Necrom.
>>
>>46160081
I dunno then. Maybe it's about worshiping ancestors _instead_ of Tribunal.

Most saltrice seen in the Empire comes from southeastern Morrowind, but there are also some new and prospering farms and plantations in the Ascadian Isles. Saltrice also grows wild in the Grazelands and on Azura's Coast.
It's the main carbohydrate of dunmer, and the most common dish the locals eat is Saltrice with scuttle, to make something like cheesy grits.or stir fry. It's huge, and I assume it has a bit of a salty flavor, probably from the conditions and location it grows in.

Nearly brought to extinction in the Oblivion Crisis when they and the Legion garrison at Fort Buckmoth had more Oblivion gates than anywhere else in the fucking world -including Cyrodiil, opened up all over Vvardenfell, and couldn't get any reinforcements from the Mainland because the fucking Nord savages.

Nearly brought to extinction being the biggest group of badasses and heroes in the world, came back stronger than ever.
