Honestly? It's the spergs that love it. They shoved 40k into everything. I might just not notice it as much now, but 6-8 years ago I couldn't see a /tg/ related message without 40k spergs coming out of the woodwork to try to turn the conversation to 40k.
That and, from what I've heard, I think Ultramarines are really dumb, not a huge fan of the imperium, and I don't know much about the other races (other than Orks sound kind of fun with the "so psychic they just make things work" but then I was told that was wrong and anyone who found that interesting was badwrongfun).

While I disagree that this cannot possibly involve the entire fanbase, I do agree on what you are saying. I myself get annoyed by these kinds of people, especially in threads outside of /tg/ that have noting to do with 40k. I do understand where you are coming from on that point.

Not many people like the Ultramarines, myself included. However, I never go out of my way to shame people on what race or chapter they like, and neither should anyone else. Those people who told you that liking the Orks was wrong are assholes. Unfortunately, they are assholes who exist in the community, and they cannot be removed completely. Its funny, really; They shit on anyone who likes Orks, yet they themselves are like Orks (so numerous you can never get rid of them completely).
Whether you like or hate warhammer, you should not base your disposition on the fanbase alone. Do you like orks yet hate the imperium? That is absolutely fine as long as you dont shit on others for liking them. Dont know much about the other races? Do research. Maybe youll end up loving the Necrons or Chaos.
Dont let the opinions of others influence your disposition.

I've never really played Better Angels, but it's about heroes who get powers from demons. Each player is a hero but also a different player's demon trying to get them to turn evil. You could probably take that bit out and have something similar to Godlike (both ORE games about supers).

I don't have it and I've never read through it but River of Heaven claims to be hard sci-fi using the OpenQuest rule system. On the bundle of holding right now (but it's the more expensive level, so unless you're interested in everything there, might be better to buy it separatelyor hurt/not-support a small publisher and look for a way to pirate it.)
