Ah man I made one of those dudes for my first RIFTS character. It went nowhere sadly.

Robotech and Palladium fantasy were pretty legit, but RIFTS, even though I had a really solid long running campaign, really is a shitshow and kind of a testament to bad game design.

One think the Palladium system did have going for it was a concrete, simulationist feel. Unrealistic and clunky for sure, but still very specific about what every action and item is.

Review the combat rules thoroughly with everyone before you start. It's a modern setting so there should be a mix of melee and ranged combat, remember what bonuses apply to which.

The power level isn't too crazy high or low so you dont have to worry about character types too much.

Character creation takes forever in palladium. I'm not sure I'd use it for one shots. That being said I really like palladium for TMNT games. One thing palladium does well is martial arts Combat.

Young son, listen up. Rifts isn't like D&D. Though you can make a group of player characters who are all very similar and could all fight similar monsters, the game is set up to allow wider more complex and more realistic character groups.

Since the very beginning the example party of Erin Tarn, her Cyber-Knight Protector and their companions have been trying to get the idea into your head that a Rifts game isn't all the players being effective in a tactical combat scenario.

Here's an example. Recently in our game the player characters took on a giant demon. As in, really huge, towering over their field base. While some of them were fighting the big bad with mecha and directing the defenders at the field base, the others were keeping the radios online, rescuing injured personnel, directing defenders inside the base and fighting some smaller demons that snuck into base and were attacking the defenders.

Even though the party ranged from mecha pilots to militia conscripts, everyone was involved and the different challenges were suited for the different people taking them on.

Not everything has to be "fighter/cleric/mage/thief go into the dungeon and work together to pass every room until they get to the boss, which they work together to defeat with their balanced DPS and healing ability". This is a roleplaying game. Think about the roles of the player characters not just about the classes the player characters have taken.

Also, not every challenge for combat oriented characters needs to be "okay juicer do your thing!" there are lots and lots of ways to challenge different types of characters that take them out of their element and stress them out and on the flip side it's always fun for players when they "happen" to meet a challenge that suits them that would have been a lot more difficult if they weren't there.

In other words don't be a basic bitch.

No, the most important job of any Rifts GM is slapping down character concepts that are munchkinned-out bullshit.

You seem to think I'm saying that all the characters have to be the same. No, they can have pretty wide degrees of power levels, that's part of the game.

But at the end of the day you still have to run some kind of campaign or another, and what characters you allow affects what kind of campaign you can run. Some can certainly handle more powerful characters, but no GM should ever feel like they have to allow some player to run a character that's going to force the entire storyline to be planned again from scratch.

"Power levels" doesn't even have to mean combat, there are plenty of ways characters can be game-breaking or simply overtake whatever campaign you were planning that doesn't even need any combat to happen.

Yes, you can have a wide range of characters, that's part of the fun. But no, don't be a munchkin or a pussy GM who lets their players run any snowflake character they want no matter what the plan was from the beginning.

As well as what I think will be a new CS equipment book that goes hand in hand with both titles. Chuck and I have cut loose and don’t want to hold back on things we know you will love.

UPDATE: Coalition States: Heroes of Humanity™ Sourcebook

>Writing, art and editing continue at a fever pitch. Heroes of Humanity is jam-packed with a wealth of background information about the Coalition States, Psi-Battalion, ramping up CS Juicer and Cyborg programs, military strategies and tactics, battle plans, and adventure ideas galore. It will also contain some new weapons and equipment, but as a zillion ideas and cool stuff keep coming into our minds, I’m becoming increasingly convinced we need to turn Coalition States: Heroes of Humanity™ into TWO sourcebooks released one right after the other. I’m writing it all as if it is ONE big book, but I’m thinking we could do more with weapons and equipment, and the art for it, if we broke them into two books. The second book being called something like CS Heroes of Humanity™ Weapons Manual or Heroes of Humanity™ Arsenal. Epic stuff that opens up and sets the stage for all kinds of new adventures and mixed group dynamics – namely CS characters working with D-Bees and practitioners of magic against the Minions of Hell – wicked supernatural beings who threaten to turn Rifts Earth into an extension of Hell itself.
