Give me some /tg/ movies to watch.

I tried to watch Dungeons & Dragons: Wrath of the Dragon God because it was the highest rated of the three on IMDB. I had to stop watching. I couldn't take the retarded speech impediment of one of the lead actors (the hero's wife). https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NdShvRiPEUA#t=17

I've seen Conan, Red Sonja, Labyrinth, The Dark Crystal, The Princess Bride, Highlander, Krull, The Neverending Story, Excalibur, Dragonslayer, Hero, Pan's Labyrinth, Crimson Peak, LOTR, Hobbit

Should I watch the Mummy films? Troy? Kingdom of Heaven?
>>
The Adventures of Baron Munchausen
Brazil

If you're going to watch Kingdom of Heaven, make sure to track down the Director's Cut.

What about movie-quality series? "Vikings" maybe?

First two Mummy films are great. Brendan Fraser and John Hannah being funny, Rachel Weisz being insanely hot. Lot to recommend them.

Batshit movie. Tack it on the list.

>>46111260
Pretty good so far; I would suggest going back and watching all the 80s sword and sorcery stuff like LadyHawke, Beastmaster, etc. Mummy is a yes; only the first two, as >>46111300 says. Also if you don't mind anime Record of the Lodoss War is decent. Man I am drunk and tired so thinking of others is hard. Kull the Conqueror, the second D&D movie (and the first one if you want to cringe and watch Jeremy Irons be awesome... actually wait, is that the one you linked? I don't think so but I forget), Legend, Wargames... uh... that'll do ya for a while probably.
>>
>>46111393
Oh shit, Ladyhawke, yeah I watched that. It was... interesting.

Kinda marred by a shitty synth soundtrack and an out-of-place american accent. Liked the ending though.

Haven't seen Beastmaster, I don't think.

That D&D movie is the second one, wrath of the dragon god, sans Jeremy Irons.
>>
>>46111410
All the Mad Max movies count too, if you're not just talking fantasy. Ironclad is campy Crusader fun. Black Death is campy Sean Bean fun. Season of the Witch is campy Nicholas Cage fun. Also give Le Pacte des Loups a shot. Good shit.

Series I'd reccomend:

>Black Sails
Prequel series to 'Treasure Island', feels like a more adventerous pirate Vikings.
>Game of Thrones
Everyone and their grandmothers have heard of this one.
>The Borgias
Really well made historical drama, if you're into that. The series very blatantly embelishes the truth, so just keep that in mind going in.
>>
>>46111410
The first Beastmaster is pretty darn good, in a grade B sort of way. The second Beastmaster is a war crime.
>>
Oh yeah, and Yor: the Hunter from the Future
>>
>>46111282
Vikings is a great show, just be aware it's more of a fantasy show than a historically accurate one. Most of the English guys wear 16th century burgonet helms, none of the vikings ever wear anything resembling a hauberk, there are literal gods walking around doing shit, that kind of thing. I love it though, just don't go into it expecting it to be a historical drama.

>>46111660
Game of Thrones is fun, just be aware it devolves into goreporn, cheap shocks, and an absurd degree of fuckedupness in the later seasons.

I haven't seen The Borgias, but if you are into later medieval stuff, The Tudors is also fun as heck. Excellent costumes in particular (except the jousting armor, which is horrible).

>>46111543
Howl's Moving Castle, Nausica, Princess Mononoke, Castle in the Sky all are great and /tg/ related.

Other stuff:
The Deadlands - cool Polynesian fantasy action movie.
Brotherhood of the Wolf
The 13th Warrior - vikings vs. neanderthals.
Ben Hur - classic.
Mongol - cool slightly fantastic portrayal of Ghenghis Khan's rise.
Vampire Hunter D - Bloodlust
Willow - entire movie about halflings.
Quest for Fire - cavemen adventure.
>>
>>46114286
I enjoy how you mention "they wear the wrong kind of helmet" and "there are literal gods walking around" as if they're the same kind of thing.
>>
Ice Pirates, Time Bandits, Flash Gordon, They Live, Big Trouble in Little China, hell comes to frogtown. Pretty much any of those goofy 80s movies have tg elements
>>
>>46114740
You are right, having Odin wander around would be far, far more tolerable than the god awful armour they made for the show.
>>

>The Borgias
>Really well made historical drama, if you're into that. The series very blatantly embelishes the truth, so just keep that in mind going in.
I'd argue it's not so much embellished as as much as that it's based on the legend surrounding Alexander VI and his family. Pretty much everything that takes place are things his contemporaries claimed he did, even if it's unlikely that any of it happened beyond having kids and a mistress. Almost like calling a film adaptation of Richard III embellished- historical slander can be really, really interesting.

I'd suggest all of the Deathstalker movies in order.

At their core all of them are cheesy fantasy B Movies, but the amount of plot points and scenes they rip from each other are amazing.

I'm talking copy pasting an entire scene from a previous movie. Not even as a flashback, since they're all self contained.
>>
>>46115086
No, it's actually shit and veers so far off the story it isn't even an adaptation. Their Call of Cthulhu was great, but this was a fucking mess.
>>
>>46124885
As long as you stop at the same moment as short story it is a perfect adaptation that nails the atmosphere.

The whole last part was put in literally "because why the fuck not" and " i always wanted to shoot that kind of scene"

Event Horizon is 40k related, at least.

For non-40k, make sure you fit The Call of Cthulhu in there.

If you like Miyazaki movies, Professor Layton and the Eternal Diva sure tries to pretend it's one, and although it's a video game movie, the way Descole presents the puzzles (what few puzzles there are) make it feel more like a campaign with a heavy-handed and unsubtle but creative DM. You'll probably like it more if you're familiar with the Professor Layton games, but it's not too shabby in a vacuum.

Ultramarines_Pic4.jpg

>>46125747

Ultramarines is misunderstood. It LOOKS like garbage visually because the animation studio had previously only really done the first three BIONICLE movies, so they could only really do things cheaply. It makes a few lore mistakes here and there, and you would certainly expect better from Dan Abnett.

But it IS written by Dan Abnett, so the script is decent, and the voice actors are all talented actors in their own right including Sean Pertwee, Terence Stamp, John Hurt, and Donald Sumpter, so the voice work is mostly fantastic (Stamp delivers a few lines weirdly, but otherwise it's great).

The worst that can be said about the script is that even at ~70 minutes the movie pads itself out a bit with very meditative, silent scenes of looking out over vistas obscured by clouds of dust so that they don't have to be rendered in any sort of detail. While there's a certain beauty to them, it still feels like the movie couldn't think of a way to reach the running time on actual content without exceeding its budget.

I quite like it. The bad parts are funny-bad, and the good parts are actually good.
>>
>>46115783
Right down to the magic items, DMPC, and useless fighter who everyone likes for the roleplay.
>>
Say, /tg/, what do you think of The Wild Hunt?
>>
>>46125989
The thing that really ruined it for me was seeing the horde of Chaos marines charge into the Ultramarines like a bunch of idiots and get cut down in droves. While the Ultras and what few Fists remain are grouped together the traitors blindly charge into a bolter and die. A lot.

I'm biased though as a traitor myself and it just felt like another bit of Ultrasmurf wanking. The movie is decent at times but to me it just leaves me wanting so much more.

There have been a lot of movies for/by games inthe past few years. Most sucked. Unicorn city, Knights of Badassdom, Your Highness,
I hope Zero Charisma ended up being one of the better ones.

As long as we're on the subject, the Riddick movies and the Last Witch Hunter. I kind of what Vin Diesel to just cut to the chase and film himself telling me about his D&D campaign. I'm not that interested, but it would be faster and cheaper than most of his movies and then we could move on.

- Heavy Metal (do NOT watch the 2000 version, you'll waste your time)
- The Black Cauldron
- Sword in the Stone (this version's Merlin is always great to see)
- How to Train your Dragon (it has nice chara and enviroment concepts at least)
- The Last Unicorn

i'm sure there's lot more foreign movies with magic and fantasy elements. didn't watch Ronja Rövardotter but i was told it's good
too bad that's all i remember for now. anime is covered with Ghibli, tho there are lots of look-good-script-is-bad movies and OVAs. they mix all sorts of genre though, like JRPGs do

Not so much films as tv series here

Mostly for Supers game on this part

Venture Brothers is what you get when the show itself is genre savvy and kinda self aware

Gotham, The Flash, Arrow are all good shows, albeit I haven't watched any of them yet...

Any recent Kamen Rider is good as well as Super Sentai/Power Rangers

Fantasy
Merlin: was a pretty good show for what it was
Game of Thrones: don't get attached to characters, horrible things happen if you do

Science fiction
Star Gate SG-1
Star Gate Atlantis
Very good shows with great runs, classic sci-if series right there, would make for good Delta Green basis

It was great, though.
Also, who did you consider the main character? Both Flint and Silver are great. It's a pretty slow show, though. The tension ratchets up and a lot of the plot is political (and I was actually planning on using it for Geist inspiration) as opposed to tons of action, and when action *does* come on, it's usually pretty out of nowhere and brutal. Doesn't the first episode center around Flint's plans fucking up and then he just challenges the captain to a duel and murders him and fakes some shit?

Your Highness

It is almost LITERALLY a standard D&D game played by a bunch of stoners but everything is being portrayed in-universe.

The banter and jokes are pretty realistic of what you could expect from a random group of players, some of them trying to actually roleplay properly and others screwing around more while the DM swings between running an actual adventure and fucking with them.

I think "decent" is a bit generous.
The whole squad acts like a bunch of rookies when they should be full fledged marines, having gone through years if not decades of training and scout missions.

Playing with 16 year olds is disgusting.
Playing with stoners even more so.

This is the single most unappealing D&D movie in existence, except the official D&D films themselves.

Yeah man there are thirty five episodes (season four is halfway through airing, each season has ten episodes). It happens in season three IIRC. And no, Floki is not a god, he's just an autistic hermit.

Here's a few movies I use for my games
Flash Gordon (OD&D, Space Opera games)
Lair of the White Worm (LotFP, Call of Cthulhu)
The Saragosa Manuscript (LotFP)
Black Death (LotFP general dark fantasy)
Sword of the Stranger (General kick-ass sword fightan inspiration)
Big Trouble in Little China (Shadowrun, MtA)
Evil Dead 2 (WoD, general survival horror where the PCs can fight back)
Army of Darkness (High Fantasy)
Versus (D&D4e, Shadowrun)
Midnight Meat Train (Very much WoD)
The Host (OD&D, low level monster hunts)
Wuxia/Dragon/Swordsmen (Martial arts games, superpowered noir, SR adepts)
Dark City (Don't Rest Your Head, MtA, UA)
Vampire Hunter D/Bloodlust (General sword and sorcery, Rifts, Shadowrun, 3.PF)
Wizards (Any game using heavy randomisation and OD&D I guess)
Ralph Bakshi's LotR (MERP)

There was a (oddly mediocre) sequel called "Witch Hunt". Another HBO film, direct sequel, but starring Dennis Hopper as H. Phillip Lovecraft.

Neither on DVD, but both were released on VHA and LaserDisc. (Which means Pirate Bay has torrents of the LaserDisc rips.)

Random faggot here. Watching Your Highness now and waiting for food. It has a few eyerolls and one chuckle so far and I'm 45 minutes in. If it doesn't get worse, it isn't bad for a "couplabeers and a flick in the background" type of movie.

Followup, if anyone gives two shits about my opinion. Finished movie, not terrible. Got a few more chuckles, less eyerolls, and even a giggle or two out of me.

As someone who enjoys cheesy and cliche films but hates tryhard b flicks, I give it an 8 out of 10. Could have had a bit less dick in it, and a bit more actual feelings, but otherwise very typical of a bunch of highschool or NEET D&D players but not entirely cringy about it.

I've wanted to run a game set in the Jin-Roh setting for ages, but can never get any of my friends to watch The Wolf Brigade. It's fantastic, but be aware it's a slow burn, not all action scenes of the guys in not-Nazi power armor. Use it as inspiration for a political-minded alt history game.
>>
>>46146801
Fuck yes. I think the final sword fight might be one of the best ones ever put to film.

For a completely different animu, I'd recommend KonoSuba. If Lodoss War is what we want our campaigns to look like, and Slayers is what we expect them to look like, then KonoSuba is what they actually look like.

Well, the ones that are still fun in spite of everyone involved being a chucklefuck.

There's also Orphen in that vein. Basically Slayers but a shade or two darker, or replace the main cast of Slayers with an angsty/edgy male, a barely competent sidekick, and an annoying bimbo. They all grow on ya after a while, despite it being your basic teenager D&D group.
>>
>>46147664
>an angsty/edgy male, a barely competent sidekick, and an annoying bimbo. They all grow on ya after a while, despite it being your basic teenager D&D group.
I'm going to be honest here, that doesn't sound like even a single one of my several teenager D&D groups at all.
>>
>>46125723
this
>>
>>46147664
If we’re going darker, I'd suggest Grimgar.

KonoSuba is the one where the players are all differing varieties of moron/pervert and yet somehow they keep beating everything the DM throws at them.
>>
>>46147699
>angsty/edgy male
Book standard emo kid, they play D&D too, or they did when I was in highschool
>barely competent sidekick
Kid who's just learning how to play.
>annoying bimbo
Fat nerd chick who plays the "hot chick" ingame.

Or maybe that was just my standard highschool team. I was the sidekick, didn't own any books and never quite had time to read them before sessions.
>>
>>46147725
Orphen is literally Slayers universe with different characters though, so it is pretty much a slightly darker Slayers.
>>
>>46111260
If you're still around, the Alice in Wonderland movie is pretty /tg/.

I've read through the thread, seen a lot of titles I don't recognize, but before I go looking up every single thing does anyone have a good family/animated style of movie? Actual movie, no series, I'm in the middle of a large series and I intend to go back to it, but I need a break from it today. Doesn't have to be very standard /tg/, it could be vaguely in that direction. I'm looking mostly to find something I haven't already seen. It's getting harder and harder since I've been taking movies from wikipedia's lists of animated films put out by year.
>>
I don't see these so I'll post em
The Seeker
>Kids movie, modern times but still has some /tg/ themes

I like to think of that entire movie as a one shot freeform roleplaying session DM'd by a 9 year old for other 9 year olds.

Listen to The Wheel of Time series. It will take you 6+ months to get through the entire thing. 2,200 characters, a very well fleshed out magic system, some very compelling moments, and it's read by Michael Kramer and Kate Reading - best readers I've ever listened to.
