Before BfZ, what we knew about the Zendikari vampires was that they were once slaves of some sort of overlord, and that is why they have shoulder spikes - and that the Eldrazi were those overlords.
The only other information we had was what was stated on this card.

I never read a MtG related book in my life, but I liked piecing together the fluff from snippets of flavour text back in the days of Ice Age and Mirage. It's a lot harder. It was cool because you were getting a sense of a larger world from the little bits of dialogue from characters who you might never see on the table. It gave an impression of a place that you, the players were there to fuck up or save or not really care about except as scenery.
By shifting the focus to the official planeswalkers it just feels like I'm getting snippets of the life story of someone I have no incentive to care about, who probably looks like a fag anyway. My interest in Jace Beleren extends as far as the amount of mind sculpting he can be persuaded to do for me.

Jace is probably one of the most interesting characters in the setting when written properly.
His flavor text makes him come across as the person he absolutely isn't, though. While the official fiction reveals that he's an anxious, genuinely altruistic person forever fretting over the moral quandaries of telepathy, the flavor text shows him off as some mind-controlling asshole that delights in fucking with the brains of others and making snarky one-liners.
