It's been a while since I last saw one of these.

Fiction as written by fans of something. A great deal of it is terrible, but there are some gems lurking amongst the muck.

>>46090799
I highly recommend The Last Angel by Proximal Flame.
https://forums.spacebattles.com/threads/the-last-angel.244209/
Humanity gets rekd by an alien empire called the compact, just as it finishes its first AI dreadnought, which whilst sufficient to destroy a compact capital ship, was not enough to prevent earth burning.
Skip forwards a millenia, humanity has been subsumed into the compact and is no longer relevant on the galactic scene.
And a salvage operation turns into something akin to Event Horizon.

Its pretty gud

Only criticism is that the main character is kind of a Gary Stu, but its not like you can expect better from a fanfic focused on an absurdly minor character from the original work
>>
>>46090799
The Hill of Swords was pretty neat. I am reading Shards of Impossibility. It's okay.

Personally, I think debt of a sword is probably his best fic. In Flight was also enjoyable, even of it did drag on.

I think there are threads in Sapcebattes and SiffcientVelocity.

Also, QuestionableQuesting for lewd(need to log in) and other stuff.

Read that one. one of the few that are actually complete

I like "The Laughing Master" too, it's basically 'John Constantine in the Grail War: Goes as well as you'd think'.

I like that one, but it feels like each time his character develops, he falls right back into meme-level xenophobia. Also:

Yeah, if you don't mind copious amount of anime bullshit and WORDS WORDS WORDS.

Same. And watching every female character losing their personalities and becoming set pieces for wacky harem antics got cringeworthy.

The battle scenes are wonderfully over the top, though.
>>
>>46092707
Well, yes, you should probably expect copious amounts of anime bullshit from fanfics where the premise is "what happens when we mash these two anime series together?"

Those two fics in particular seem to attract a lot of hate from people heavily invested in Nasuverse stuff, though.
>>
>>46093298
Tends to be the case with most nasuverse fics.

Here's another recommendation for the pile, CATALYST.EXE

Long story short: they dumb down and OOC the Nasuverse characters so hard it's not even funny.

The Many sons of winter

And, the giant awoke

both game of thrones/ song of fire and ice

the first the north is basically a power house and not a depopulated shit hole because of highland cattle, that ended up making it not only rich, but prosperous
also the boltons are tanners for some reason
and all the new northern lordlings shit on Theon, since there are already many branching houses of the starks, so he's treated with much more respect.
there's also plenty of other things I find amusing with it, good fic, not sure if its still alive

The second
Tyrion lanister straight up kills the mountain by fighting him alone
involving a taffy covered shield
I like it because of that plan which is PC as fuck
then he gets the fuck out of kings landing
and proceeds to become a bit marty sueish after a few chapters of becoming richer and richer from various schemes is essos

and then he discovers how to cure greyscale, starts selling it with the pyromancer guys
goes back to westeros and starts warring

OH
and another good one

Sean bean saves westeros

Book 1: Sean Bean lends a helping hand

Book 2: Sean Bean wins by a nose

Basically sean is sent to westeros after ned dies in the books. And it's pretty funny to me at least

I've got a few bookmarked, but I find they tend towards taylor-with-different-power than decent, standalone stories.

I'm enjoying 'With friends like these' so far, and Goblin Queen is wonky but fun.

Best fanfiction I came across in a while is actually a Harry Potter x Type-Moon crossover, of all the fucking things.

Written really well. Actually manages to capture the tone of both at once. Since it's ran on the main western Type-Moon forum, it doesn't trigger your lore jimmies, and the guy really knows what he's doing naturally meshing the settings together, too.

The main premise is that Matou Shinji, as a little kid before he went too bad, had gotten a letter from Hogwarts a school of Formalcraft. Since he can actually do Formalcraft as opposed to Magecraft, he decides to go for it. At this point the plots of both the source works are derailed hilariously off course, while still feeling like plausible developments. Can definitely recommend this one to anyone.

Currently reading linkrelated, and it's probably the best fanfiction I've read.
It's not OOC, it's short and to the point, and it retains the atmosphere of the original.
It's not very /tg/, though, and you have to be familiar with the original source.

I enjoyed HoS, IF and DoaS, but in my opinion his best work is Those Who Love Monsters. It's to the point, thematically cohesive, and ties up all of its loose ends in a way that most of his stuff just doesn't.

For Harry Potter, I really like Prince of the Dark Kingdom. It does a lot of new things with the characters and setting, but other than Voldemort they're all still very believably the same people. Author really needed an editor, though, the grammar could be awful.

I've always respected Fairy Dance of Death, SAO fanfic that takes the worst arc of a story that's mediocre at best, and does better than the original author ever could.

>>46104228
Personally, I thought the muggle police sideplot was the best part of it. It really should have been its own story, though. I think he wrote himself into a corner with the main plot, trying to be clever with plot twists and diverging so much.

>Emperor of Zero - Nietzchian
Louise summons Napoleon Bonaparte, who immediately begins plotting to take over the world. The guy is scary. Unfinished, abandoned.

>Fate Revelation Online - daniel-gudman
Kind of lengthy SAO/Nasu crossover. SAO turns out to have a nasu-style magic system built in. Unfinished, going slowly.

>To The Stars - Hieronym
Hundreds of years after the events of Madoka Magica, humanity reaches the stars, and they find nothing good. Unfinished, being actively worked on.

>Lelouch of Britannia - Cal reflector
Code Geass. Lelouch doesn't get exiled after his mother's death. Unfinished, abandoned.

Sturgeon's law applies. There are a couple of okay ones, like A Song of Fire and Fire and Weaver Nine. A Cloudy Path was decent, but kind of got away from its author, I think.

Plus there's that quest thing that Wildbow ran, PRT Department Sixtty-Four.
>>
>>46096380
Original fiction is just fanfiction about reality. You're not creating something entirely new, you're arranging a series of symbols you've culled from human experience into a new form.

And since fiction has been part of human experience for millennia, all fiction is fanfiction. Check and mate.

Anon, you don't understand.
Gabriel Blessing is literally everything wrong with fanfiction.

Where one can use a sentence, he writes a fucking novel. He mangles characterization beyond recognition, and protracts the story too much, relying on harem antics and lengthy introspections as his main go-to plot devices.

Don't get me wrong, he is still better than the majority of "fanfiction writers", and once I too thought his fanfiction was good. Never again, though.

Show, don't tell. I'd rather read something short but well-executed, even if it will leave me wanting for more, rather than wasting my time on reading about superficial things. Brewity is the soul of wit, after all, and many people forget it.

I've actually come to deeply appreciate the whole 'brevity' thing. And the description of shorter being better and leaving you wanting for more.

Mind you, if a person is going to write a lot, I don't really want or care to read anything that seems to linger on a single subject rather than use concise, easy to understand language to get a point across. It's the number of incidents and the depth of that characterization getting across to you with well executed language that matters.

It's annoying and daunting to think about how early writing, when you're just getting used to grammar and applying language, you start to think that more words = better, but like, I don't know.

One person I knew laid it out best for me back in 2009. "Given what I've been reading, you want a dictionary, where you've been using a thesaurus."

People don't seem to understand this and it really drags a work down.

>Shinji and Warhammer 40k
This fic is not on crack, crack is on this fic. What starts out with milquetoast butt monkey Shinji Ikari finding a hardcase full of 40k miniatures and rulebooks has a profound effect on his personality, character, and relationship with his guardians. Thanks to his hobby, he grows to be 20 times more badass, an efficiently intellectual power player, who knows no fear, charges headlong into combat without hesitation, exhibits nearly prescient planning abilities, and earns the reverence and adoration of his people for his heroism.

And then in the second chapter he actually arrives in Tokyo-3 and meets his Evangelion.

Yeah, it's crazy, and awesome, and destruction follows in Shinji's wake, as we get to simultaneously watch the end of Evangelion and the rise of the God Emperor of Mankind unfold. Read it, even if just for the prologue, it's amazing g.

>Harry Potter and the Natural 20.
The harry potter fanfic with a D&D 3.5 minmaxed 11 year old wizard in it who does everything Rules As Written But Not As Intended. Watch as a 3aboo's "perfect wizard" is both *impossibly stronger* and *far weaker* than any first year wizard should be. See a 3.5 hyper optimized wizard lament his misfortune as he has to take "Keldor's Fire Bolt" because being able to "end an encounter" doesn't work so well when there's nobody there to chip down the HP. Curse him as he blows "sense motive" check after "sense motive" check while standing within arm's reach of the BBEG and *telling* him how useful he can be as an ally! Speaking of Blessing, I'd have to say my favourite of his is Wabi Sabi for some reason.

My favourites of his are The Battle Never Ends (which, incidentally was my first MGS fic and if I remember correctly still the only), True Warriors Never Die, and Better Left Unsaid.
Though he could learn to update faster, like Bhepin or something.

>>I Am NOT Going Through Puberty Again!
An enjoying read, though the future parts were annoying in my opinion.

>>Nobody dies
Started out enjoyable but went a bit too far off the bend for my tastes, and the Reload didn't help.

Tolerably technically written, but introduces a lot of new shit for the purpose of wanking the main character, ie Sakura. Also shits on Sasuke for some reason.

Wind chakras is better. No Genin Left Behind could've been, but that's as abandoned as his Quest.

In terms of fanfiction, I was genuinely surprised by how good "The Legend of Elsa" by Rinjin was. A Zelda/Frozen mashup, but played pretty well and uses the tropes to the best.

Another good one is another Frozen one, "Perfect Diamond World" by Solosam. It's Frozen played completely straight with Norse and Lovecraftian mythology. Fizzles out unfortunately, but it's still nicely done for what it is.

In terms of original works, "Under Darkening Skies" by Grey. Fun story, based in a homebrew game and setting. Pretty fun, even if it updates a little infrequently.

>>46114001
I'd argue that /tg/ on tumblr is being overly judgemental about people's hobbies and interests, but /tg/ has always been like that. Besides, who the fuck cares? Tabletop games are stereotypically envisoned as fat neckbeards who live in their mothers basement, so how bad is adding fanfiction to the mix? Most settings are that anyway for fuck sake.

Muggle Sideplot is the best part.

Milo using only minmaxing that is interpretation based grates at me after a while.

"I can use a major creation item to summon something so big it punches through walls!" is the pinnacle of it, but then there's shit like "TOWER SHIELDS GIVE CONCEALMENT FROM ONE SIDE THEREFORE WE ARE INVISIBLE FROM ALL SIDES"

Basically the author has run out of reasonable cheese (like Rainbow Servant) and is scraping the bottom of the barrel.
>>
>>46113727
Looking back at it, those parts are beautifully written and really understand the psychology well; which makes them all the more horrifying and off-putting.
>>
>>46114001
>Bleach
>A setting where the main character is a blank anime protag so the author has an excuse to write 50+ characters who have decent character depth and great inspirations
>A setting that allows the antagonist to do whatever they want just so they can introduce entire new arcs in differently inspired locales
>A setting that spends downtime from the action on worldbuilding everything from spiritual ghettos to snapshots of the guardians of the realm

>An anime where the only plot is save the princess

Bleach is /tg/ as fuck son.

Anon, I have better things to do than read mediocre fiction, and the word "mediocre" describes the overwhelming majority of the fanfiction, including Blessing in particular.

I can work, I can hang out, I can study, I can play, and I can just plain relax and shitpost on 4chan to my heart's content.

So forgive me, oh great Anon, when I don't want to spend time trying to tear through walls of text that describe mundane and banal things that can be expressed in a single sentence.

>>
I'm not going to lie. I enjoy a decent chunk of the Infinite Loops series from Spacebattles. It's crack fic for the most part, with lots of crossovers and one-shot AU stuff. There's at least a few "snips" for any universe you can think of though most of them cross over with MLP at least once and it's all community contribution, so no one author "owns" the loops. I've written a couple myself, but they were pretty garbage.
>>
Speaking of guilty pleasures...

With This Ring, a self-insert orange lantern/young justice fic that moves from SB to SV after the author got a 24-hour ban for Star Wars spoilers and didn't want to break his ridiculous streak of daily updates.

Shit's a ridiculous soap opera and I can't stop reading it every single day.

It's honestly better than it seems.
>>
>>46106547
PotDK is odd. The writer is in desperate need of an editor; the number of simple grammar errors is just plain distracting.
The plot and setting are interesting, but all of the chatacters, especially big V, are are wildly out of character. The author has a tendency to make chatacters gay. Make of that what you will.

There's also a weird thing going on with the magic. The author adds in a huge druid/pagan magic system. It's a bit generic fir my tastes. The problem is that the changes made, both to chatacters and the magic, stops it from being Harry Potter at all. A major theme in HP is that the IRL concept of magic and that stuff is a misunderstanding, but this fanfic ruins the whole aesthetic.

I don't dislike it, but having it be a HP fanatic actually starts to hurt it. It would be a better work if it was entirely original.
>>
One of my own guilty pleasures has to be Ryuugi's fics on SB, consisting of:
The Games We Play, a RWBY/The Gamer crossover, played fairly munchkin
Prytaneum, a Percy Jackson/Danmachi crossover.
Fairly notable for their length, general good writing, and an absolutrly ridiculous daily update schedule.

>>
Love and Krieg is really cute, though there are some cringeworthy stories in it thanks to retards that just want to inject memes into it writing stories, but overall the "main" storyline is great, though a little rushed at times. And boy is it heretical in terms of canon.
Love Can Bloom is fucking precious and I am so sad it never got finished. But fuck, even GW liked it enough to hint at it being POSSIBLY canon.
Emperor's Text To Speech Device is hilarious as all fuck, though a little slow to start. The first episodes are still good, but they get much better.
Times and Trials of Klightus is beautiful and pretty funny at times, though you can tell the author got a little burnt out at times. Also a damn shame there isn't more, but still a good read.

It's called After-Action Report, just like with Paradox games.
>>
>>46116866
They are both objectively horrible and I hate myself for loving them.

The Open Door is such a clusterfuck. Too many plot threads opening, none closing, ever. No credible opposition is ever presented; we're told that there are factions out there that can kick Chaos' ass, but none of them have appeared yet. All we see is them winning over and over.

God willing, when Nanoha finally returns she's going to blow up their fucking planet for what they did to Vita.

Ha ha ha, like it's ever going to be continued.

Why am I so invested in such horrible writing?

Cain and Able series is pretty decent. Written from the point of view of a junior commissar under Ciaphus Cain. Follows the general style of the original Cain novels fairly well and handles the characterizations of the OC surprisingly accurately I feel. Doesn't really have the MC interact with them too much either, which is a nice way to prevent Mary Sueism.

You will never be able to read the Saotome Gambit

Waters Under Earth is a long and sprawling Ranma 1/2 fanfic.

Twoflower/Stefan Gagne has a bunch of good stuff from the early 2000s/late 90s, and has some good original works now as well. Unreal Estate was pretty funny. I also recommend going through his older stuff and looking up Ministry of Confusion. Another Ranma 1/2 fanfic series with a dose of Bubblegum Crises.

Magical Troubleshooting Crossover
Fighting Tournament ULTRA! is a round robin fanfic sprawl of Anime WWF style that varies greatly in quality.

He also made some wicked NWN mods.

It doesn't actually bash Dumbledore, I think. Dumbledore is just really unlucky inside the events of the fic. It legit bashes Snape much harder, even though he is an important character. With people like Hagrid and Dumbledore it's more "This good person does dumb shit.", while with Snape it's "This nigga is actually pretty smart so he has no excuse".

If the fic has a problem, it's that the readers got railroaded into a relationship with Luna. That's really undeniable. Yandere Hermione was great though.
