>green dragons breathe poison

Where did this autism come from and why won't it go away?

Dragons breathe FIRE damn it.
>>
>>46063778
Well, the poison thing is supported by the mythology, plenty of dragons spat venom instead of flames. As for the lightning and ice and other variant types, I think it's just an attempt to add some variety to the genre.

>Where did this autism come from and why won't it go away?
Game mechanics and presumption of game balance (often poorly implemented, but still). The point is if every dragon breather fire, stacking fire resistances would make for overpowered dragon hunter that can take on any dragon. When they each attack with different element dragon hunter needs to diversify.

It came from autism, anon. Just like you said. Same reason it won't go away.

Autists like to have everything divided up into neat little categories with distinct properties. They also like to churn out rulesets and lore for games. Thus in the world of /tg/-related, the two often come together in an unholy union and are why we have so much shitty, contrived, artificial-feeling world-building.

>>46064109
The same way it "breathes" fire - it uses a specialized organ that shoots out the projectile at a high speed. It's much closer to spitting than breathing.

One could "shoot" lightning by shooting out an extremely conductive liquid that is then charged or ignited at an extremely high temperature through ferromagnetic materials, or discharges its own naturally-produced electrical charge down this highly-conductive pathway through specialized glands in the mouth.

Alternatively, they use magic, because they're a fucking magical creature that can't even exist in their fantastical form in real life.
>>
>>46063778
Not really.

The Dragon in Beowulf didn't breath fire, it had an incredibly venomous bite.

The idea of dragons breathing fire comes from medieval illustrators copying illustrations of African Monitor lizards over and over again. None of them had ever actually seen this animal so they kept making it bigger and bigger and adding more forks to its tongue. Eventually, the tongue got so many forks that it looked like a stream of fire, so the next illustrator assumed that it was.

I don't give a shit about dragons not breathing fire. Giving a shit would be unbearably autistic.

What I hate is the neat little divisions, like others said. It utterly stifles creativity. It completely ruins any mystical feel dragons might have had. You're reducing great mythical beasts to the level of -- giraffes, or hawks. Animals we know and scientifically study. Animals that are in no way fantastic.

I don't want my dragons to be explained. I don't want them taxonomically detailed. I want them like medieval bestiaries. I want them shrouded in myth and legend, I want them each unique in their own predictably unpredictable way, I want them made with *effort*. Not just some shitty exercise in getting a template and swapping words.

____ dragons breath ____ and live in the ____. Their personalities are ____ and their weakness is ____.
>>
>>46063778
The great serpents of Austrialian myth breathed lightning, as did some of those from Sweden.

Poison is common: Fafnir, the basilisk, cockatrice (which were considered forms of dragons), etc.

Acid is actually an attribute of their blood about half the time, the other half granting benefits such and impervious skin or great wisdom.

So, yeah, you're n uneducated dumbfuck.

Alternatively, all dragons "breath" electricity
>"Fire" dragons spit highly pressurized flammable gas that they set on fire with a single spark. Many uses per week

>"Lightning" dragons spit highly pressurized and highly conductive gas. They add way more power behind the spark so the gas becomes plasma and, for a moment, looks like lighting before dissipating into normal fire. Very few uses per week

>"Poison" dragons breath lower conductivity stomach liquids that serve as conductors for a moderate amount of electricity. The effects are a heavy (for a smaller being) shock, electic burn marks that seem like they trace the veins of the body and a long-term debilitating condition caused by being electrocuted. Most dragons of this group only attack on self-defense, hence why many people live to suffer the long-term effects. Many uses per week. Other than that the acidic fluids can be used more other on their own and do decent damage.

>"Death" dragons use their many spiked tongues to attack and give a devastating shock while doing so. The shape of their tongues align perfectly with the location of the spinal cord ib many vertebrates, which then uses as rudimentary puppets to attract more prey to its hiding hole. Attacking the "puppet" may sever the tongue and cause the dragon to attack more actively. The tongues normally carry deadly pathogens should they break the skin. Many uses per week.

>"Salt" dragons live in salt-saturated waters, and as such, their bodies tend to accumulate the stuff. Their method of self-defense, and sometimes prey, is to "cough" the salt at land-bound and then ignite the crystals with electricity, causing a medium-sized explosion of plasma. Few uses per week

>"Greater" dragons, despite common belief, are not elder Fire dragons, but a species of their own. They are able to mix viscous snot with highly volatile stomach acids to spit a napalm-like substance as a defense mechanism. Very few uses per week.

Dungeons & Dragons. They thought dragons sell well, so they put them in the name and came up with excuses to have lots of variants of dragons and things with dragon in the name.

The D&D people were right, people love dragons. Elemental themed colored dragons is an excuse for more dragons.
