Playing online over IMs, such as mIRC, what is your generally accepted delay between posts at about a paragraph's length?

I find I rapidly lose patience with that one player that seemingly takes long breaks on other tabs, doesn't engage or just generally appear to be typing with a lone straw taped to his front tooth because he's a quad amputee.

How can you ever, ever, take more than five minutes to write 30 words?

The problem is that something that should take 1 minute to type takes 5, because we keep editing it to get it exactly right.

I have aimed for 5-10 minutes personally. If I have a really long thing I want to write I'll break it into pieces just so people have something to read while I work on the next part.

About 10-20 minutes as I suspect, I usually just skim over the posts.

I am certain people spend like 90% of their posting time just looking through a thesaurus and making themselves sound smart.

>Wait for a post for like 10 mins
>Finally see a post.
>Read a post.

Five seconds per word, tops. Longer than that and I bail.

In IRC games, I tend to think if you take more than a couple of minutes to write a short reply you're being a shit. If you're doing a piece of longer description I'd be okay with up to five minutes, but there's a time and a place. A player who writes a fucking essay for every little thing is just a drag.

Of course, this all goes out the window in combat time, but even then if the IC pace slows down, you should reply just as fast or faster OOC as you hash out rules stuff, declare actions and resolve them so you can then fluff up IC.

Generally, I like to get combats rolling so that while one player is fluffing the results of their turn, another player is rolling theirs, and the next in line is already prepared. Online play is slow, but it keeps things moving decently well.

Why the fuck wouldn't you do it over roll20.net or maptool?

For games that don't require a map, where a pure chat interface is a cleaner, lighter and simpler alternative?

My IRC groups use Roll20 for maps when we need to, but RPing, chat and dicerolling stays on IRC.

0. This is the single largest reason I refuse to play text-only any longer. The ONLY reasonable online RPG format is text for IC and VoIP for OOC
