Can you use divide the soul to teleport? Like, you create a copy, and when the spell ends you destroy the original?

Given that Divide the Soul makes absolutely no distinction between the original and the copy (Calling both "Manifestations" and not giving the original any special effects) I'd say yes.
>>
>>46058608
Both "copies" created by Divide the Soul are you, and there is no "original" or "copy." Since the copy has to appear in your line of sight it would be a relatively short range teleport, you would have to physically cross any further distance. It would be a fairly inefficient way to travel, especially since easier ways exist in other elements. It is a rank 5 spell so it is meant to be powerful, so a short range teleport on top of the main effect is not too big a deal.

Gonna dump a few other questions:
Could you guys give me suggestions for schools and shit for a tetsubo/strenght chracter that isn't a crab, and for a sohei/naginata monk that isn't a spider?
>>
>>46059263
I, the reason for that question, am combining it with a divination spell as DtS has range of self and you need to only see where you want your twin. How does this change the verdict?
>>
>>46059384
If you are using a spell to see another location you aren't really seeing the location, you are being shown the location by the kami you got to make that effect, so no, you can't divine a jump point to use with Divide the Soul.

Aw, oh well.
>>
>>46059316
The Daidoji Iron Warriors have a rank 4 alternate path called Daidoji Heavy Regulars, and they specialize in heavy weapons (They also train with the Crab on the wall, but still).
There's also a few Minor Clans that regularly use heavy weapons, and Matsu Berserkers can easily pick it up (Since their techniques are weapon agnostic and support smashy tactics)

As for Sohei, it's basically Spider or Brotherhood. Technically, almost every order in the Brotherhood *can* have Sohei (Except the really pacifist ones, obviously), and there are a few that are exclusively Sohei.
>>
>>46059669
The Brotherhood sects I have looked up this far are a bit off-putting, as they all seem to revolve a lot around unarmed.
>>
>>46058608
First link only has a few 4e stuff, with the rest being earlier editions
Second link has basically everything from 4e, though.

Question: are Matsu Beastmasters as OP as they seem? What's the catch?
>>
>>46059759
They all pretty much do, so if you want a Sohei, you'll want to avoid most of the martial Kiho, funnily enough, since it's all unarmed related.
Get a bunch of self-buffing ones though and you can cut bandits down with your naginata like a champ.

>>46059851
Well, for one thing, their lions are actually nerfed because they only get complex action attacks for game balance reasons. The other catch is that you're dragging around at least one lion, which is a social faux pas in most civilized areas, and you aren't particularly impressive without your meaty engine of clawdeath.
>>
>>46059920
Oh, and the Beastmasters are generally held in reserve where nobody can find them, so they're usually on a shorter leash than other samurai. Presumably the GM and player have either worked out why a Beastmaster has been deployed or have waived that part of the fluff, but it's still something to think about.
>>
Is it considered bad form to spread your points thin during char creation specifically so you can reach insight rank 2?
>>
>>46060253
Yes.
It's not considered bad form to make a well-rounded character though (As long as the other players aren't min-maxing, anyway). Ideally, a samurai should be able to deal with court, defend themselves, and understand their own religion and the world around them. They should definitely be better at whatever they specialize in, but they should be able to passably survive in many situations.
>>
>>46060444
Thought so.

In my defence, Transmute is a really cool spell that you only get at level 2, and Dragon samurai are supposed to have varied focus.
>>
>>46060569
Read the sidebar that describes the Transmute spell. "Only shugenja of Rank 5 and higher may learn it normally."

L5R generals are normally pretty good when Clan partisans aren't shitting it up with their stupidity. We have good lore and mechanics discussions and are pretty civil.
>>
>>46064239

Clan partisanship doesn't even need to be shitposting, as Crab & Scorpion poets have demonstrated.
>>
>>46064500
It doesn't need to be, but it more often than not is.

I'm in a gigantic campaign and just got the right to found a minor clan. This means a new school, and I'd like your thoughts on general power level.

Azarashi Family: +1 Intelligence

General family quirk is trying to marry bushi to shugenja. Believe that it leads to tough shugenja and smart bushi children. Knowledge is power, and being prepared through prior study brings success.

Azarashi Shugenja School:

Benefit: +1 Perception

Skills: Calligraphy (Ciphers), Lore: Theology, Lore: Elements, Meditation, Spellcraft, Any Craft or Artisan, Any Bugei

Honor: 4.5

Outfit: Robes, Daisho, Scroll Satchel, Traveling Pack, 5 Koku

Affinity: Importuned/None (See technique)

Technique: You may importune spells as though you had an affinity in every element. You may add your ranks in Lore: Elements to the total of all Spellcraft rolls.
Spells: 3 of one element, 2 of any other element, 1 of a third element, 1 of a fourth element.

My general feeling is that an affinity for importuning but not for any normal casting is roughly on par with a standard elemental affinity, but I'm not confident in that. Boosting spellcraft seemed like the importuning equivalent to the Isawa free raise. Also helps with Taryu-jiai, which helps reinforce clan themes a little bit.
>>
>>46064990
You forgot Sense, Commune, and Summon. All the Minor Clan schools start with 3 koku. You gave the school too many starting spells, only the Isawa school has the selection your school has, I'd go 2/2/1 as you get to pick your elements, which is very unusual. Your tech is OK, but remember importuning takes time, it is impossible in combat.
>>
>>46065250
He should make spell selection 2/2/1/1; keeps the spell selection how he wanted, but doesn't give him too many spells
>>
>>46065717

2/2/1/1 sounds pretty good. The founding character was Isawa trained, so my main goal was to make an importune-focused version of the Isawa school. I briefly considered only taking one spell of each element to really push the importuning thing, but that seemed like it was too restricted.
>>
Are there any onies in the books that are basic "Big Strong" Onies? With tetsubos and animal hides?
>>
>>46068420
There are ogres, and Tainted ogres would probably be what you want, I think. All of the named oni are a lot more weird and esoteric.

Increase your damage rolled until your pool would be 12. Then it reverts back to 10 and you get 1 extra kept die. Repeat as necessary, but don't stop on odd numbers, since they don't count for shit.
There aren't really many other ways to do it.

What? Who the hell told you that? Wherever you got that idea from had not a single fucking clue what they were babbling about.

The characters for "tetsubo" aren't even pronounced that way in Chinese, 鉄棒 is like "zhìbàng" IIRC.

The club weapon made famous by traditional depictions of oni and L5R was traditionally called a kanabo 金棒 (lit. "metal rod"), "tetsubo," 鉄棒 is Japanese for "iron rod" and it's use in relation to the club is almost wholly, but not entirely, a western thing practically popularized by L5R. Pic related is what native Japanese speakers would refer to as a "tetsubo."
>>
>>46071640
Actually wait, I take that back, more traditionally it'd be called "kanasaibo" 金砕棒 with "kansaibo" being an alternative name for the same thing.

Because Japs fucking love alternative names for the same bloody thing.

Isn't the card-game coming back next year?
>>
Anybody here remember the fun we were having earlier with home brew clans? Any interest in making a new one?
>>
>>46077437
Yeah, as a living card game. Most L5R guys are not too excited about it. Most L5R RPG people I know fear that FFG will go all snowflake dice on the RPG.

No one I know is really excited about L5R's future. The initial excitement of the sale has worn off and the watching has set in.
>>
>>46071710
Ah, but the popular fantasy convention (And by popular, I mean earlier editions of L5R used it) had Kanabo as the shorter variant, with Tetsubo being the long, two handed one.
So basically, if you were to stat it for 4e, it would just be a Jo Staff (With the same stats) that you use the Heavy Weapons skill for.
>>
>>46080162
Fuck you, I'm looking forward to the LCG, and I'm cautiously optimistic about the rpg. It's definitely waiting time, but there's no need to be doom and gloom about it. No one's going to steal your 4e books even if they never come out with a 5e at all, let alone one with wonky dice-- which, frankly, would not be the end of the world everyone makes it out to be.
>>
>>46083300

>>
>>46084636
Not him, but to be honest I spent about that much for a set of custom d10s with one die each of roughly the clan colors with each clans' mon replacing the 0 face.

But, that was my choice to spend that money on special dice, it's not like they were required to play the game like FFGs bullshit.

Speaking of which, did L5R have any rules for establishing your own lineage? Off hand, the only games I remember doing the whole "you can adventure as your children" bit was Pendragon.
>>
>>46090963
I mean, adventuring as your own children is dead simple if you just marry normally, since your kid will be the same family as you or your spouse, with rules already existing for their schools and family bonus and whatever. There aren't specifically mechanical rules for creating a new family or minor clan, but homebrew is not overly difficult, and there are certainly lore rules about when a samurai could found a new family or clan in the first place.
