What's your opinion on kobolds, and why?
>>
thats actually a good point why are my opinions on kobolds?
>>
>>46049159
I like them, they're smaller and weaker than everyone else but they're still trying the best they can.
>>
Tiny dragon rats. Sometimes they're dumb and savage, other times they're like scaly children with too many pointy bits. Overall not very threatening unless met in large numbers.
>>
>>46049159
I hate them because of all the koboldfags that turn them into magicalrealm fodder.
>>
>>46049195
Is there any actual mythological creatures that resembles the kobold? Since actual mythological.kobolds were wee men and.miners
>>
As part of a primarily underdark party, my opinion on kobold is usually based on how they are cooked. I know eating intelligent creatures is normally taboo, but you can't always keep rothe with you in some of the more out of the way parts.

They're okay as fodder pr even as a race of shitty subterranean dung farms, but anything else for them just seems extraneous or silly.
>>
>>46049159
Originally an alternative to throwing goblins at first level parties, given some interesting backstory for the Dragons part of "Dungeons and Dragons", people started to do interesting things with them tactically to prove that "even the worst monster can be a threat in numbers/with organization", quickly became meme and fetish trash because people think that always subverting them is somehow clever instead of trite after the 1000th time.

TL;DR Drizzt the race on /tg/.
>>
>>46049440
You can cry and whine all you want, but kobolds is /tg/, now and always. Deal with it.
>>
>>46049159
Image search has failed me.
>>
my opinion on them in relation to this board is that people should stop posting their shitty furry fetish bullshit.

as monsters in a campaign they're pretty good. they can be a good challenge to low level adventurers, cannon fodder to a mid level baddie or even NPCs if you want to have a monster village of relatively non-threatening creatures.
>>
Well, I like them.

They are far away of being my favourite race in fantasy, but i'm kinda tired of seeing Goblins as pathethic little enemies doing bad stuff for the sake of doing it, or the lesser slaved race doing all the dirty work for a big evil empire. So I welcome the Kobolds as a nice change.

Murderous, kleptomaniac vermin with delusions of draconic association.
Why? Because almost anytime they are presented as distinct from goblins (Kobold is German for Goblin) it's as Evil little lizardmen.
Exceptions being /tg/ fap folders and Japanese monster girl smut.
>>
I don't see any reason not to just roll them into goblins

I quite like them. They're small, weak, and smart enough to realize they're quite fucked. And so, they have little choice but to be trap-making, cunning bastards to stay alive. Their industrious nature, their religion based largely on "Fuck Gnomes, seriously, fuck them" and their pragmatism are all things that greatly appeal to me.
>>
>>46050123
Nah man, fetishists make a big distinction. Kobolds are much more animalistic so they invoke extra bundle of stuff.

Overly sexualised on /tg/, and despite my penis's unsolicited approval that remains a bad thing for the race's image.

In flavor terms, I like how they're an alternative to goblins and allow world builders some flexibility with their fodder races. Also the draconic servitude and trap building aspects are interesting.

In crunch and as PCs, not sure. Never played one, but I hear they're fun to play and really rather good at certain builds, and make a lot of sense as gunslingers due to a mechanical affinity and their weapons not requiring a lot of strength which kobolds lack.

But I *am* a koboldfag. I just don't start jacking it at the table at the first mention of kobolds.

Also one thing I like about kobolds is the possibility they have to improve their construction skills and eventually build bigger, even up to cities that goblins generally seem to lack.
I mean you get gnome cities with as the token steampunk element throw-in after the DM gets into the subgenre. Kobolds can fill a similar niche.

To be honest, I don't really know why, but I really do have a soft spot for Kobolds, both scaly and non-scaly.
As long as they behave, they give me that sort of feeling you get when a pet does tricks and you just can't help but smile at them...
Then they whip out a crossbow as big as their own body as well as some molotov cocktails and proceed to prove that they can kick ass too...
>>
>>46051051
The thing about Dog-bolds is, why not just use Gnolls?
Goblins, Kobolds, and Gnolls all fill the same role, and it's not always necessary to use all three.
>>
>>46051755
Gnolls are bigger. They fulfill pack hunter and bruiser roles who can can tank a hit.
Goblins and kobolds are more quick pikemen and trappers which go down in droves.

At least in theory.
>>
>>46051755
Well, Gnolls are both bigger and they aren't inspired by dogs, they are inspired by Hyenas.

Kobolds are meant to be THICC ADVENTURERS.
>>
Vicious small lizard things that usually are a sign of a dragon's presence or passing. They're born when a dragon's breath or blood envelops raw ores, poisoning and transforming them into the imp-like kobolds. They serve dragons religiously like living gods.

Alternatively they're a different sort of goblin, because there are so many kinds of goddamn goblins.
>>
>>46051050
Koboooold
>>
>>46051755
>Goblins, Kobolds, and Gnolls all fill the same role

Not in most games of D&D I've played.

Goblins are offensive-minded. They build hordes and attack villages and settlements and even cities if they can get large enough. They're uneducated but that's not the same thing as unintelligent, and in fact they're quite clever with machines when they want to be. Their "tactics", however, is basically just "crush them under sheer mass of attacking goblins". They are perfectly willing to ally with or work under hobgoblins, bugbears, ogres, or anything else.

Kobolds are defensive-minded. They live behind trap after trap after trap. They're highly educated and extremely insular and xenophobic. They only go to the surface to forage for food, and actually avoid attacking nearby settlements not directly in their claimed land since they don't want to deal with reprisals. The second anyone tries to encroach on their land, though, they launch an attack to draw out enemy forces and then just keep drawing those forces back through layers of prepared traps, letting them do the dirty work; once that's done they fall on the village with overwhelming numbers, kill and burn everything, then return home and get back to mining. They hate everything that isn't another kobold - with the exception of dragons, whom they will do anything to please. Even dumb stuff.

Gnolls are big, lazy, and stupid, basically short, furry ogres. They eat whatever they can kill but don't have any interest in holding territory for any length of time; or rather, they do, but they suck at it because they can't be bothered to tend herds or farm fields or build a proper standing army. If an army has gnolls in it, those gnolls have been pressed into service and will wander off at the first opportunity unless they are *constantly* being fed trophies and, well, food.
>>
I hate them, I hate whoever thought they should be little lizard people, and I hate /tg/ for turning them into CYUTE AND WUVABLE fetish garbage. They used to be fine, but now they're shit.
>>
>>46051901
It's fine to hate, as long as your hate does not control you. It's up to you to exclude them or make them good in the games you run.
>>
>>46051873
Also, fuck the furry or scaly kobolds. They cannot make human expressions, they make their own weird lizard expressions. They cannot blush, they're difficult to tell apart sexually. They don't rub noses or pretend to be some kind of cute adventurer. They gnash, stab, bite, choke,, trip, trap, and steal. They swarm in numbers like tiny raptors ripping at your flesh. They are not for hugging.
>>
I think they should have been included as a core race instead of dragonborn. Hell, toss goblins and gnolls into the mix too.
>>
>>46049159

Our current DM uses them as canon fodder for any encounter that requires a decent amount of enemies regardless of the situation so I've about had it with kobolds. Anytime they make an appearance I kill them as brutally as possible because fuck kobolds. They do make for a solid improvised weapon in a pinch though
>>
>>46051927
Yeah, I just leave them out. It's easier to make a different little cannon-fodder monster race than to fix the kobold trainwreck at this point.

I love 'em. Playing one now in a 5e campaign. I think it's the combination of frailty and sheer determination that I like, but I'm not sure. Definitely not a magical realm thing for me, as scales are a turn-off... even though she wants to have half-dragon babies, it's more "strengthen the tribe" than "muh dragon dick".

Which parts are lizard and which parts are human is arbitrary. It's entirely as likely/unlikely for them to walk and talk, or to have any of their human characteristics.
They're not even necessarily cold blooded because that's an arbitrary decision as well.

So your argument comes down to "Lizardmen should not have tits because I don't want them to have tits."
>>
>>46052335
If you're going to use lizards, but then take away everything that makes them lizards, you have boring scaly humans.

Fuck that, give me weird lizard brain shit and in human expression. Mammals feel and look warm, insects feel and look cold, lizards look like they actively reject the warmth, rather than just be cold.
>>
>>46049159
Kobolds are pathetic, and I like to turn that up to eleven. Their culture is based around kissing the feet of Dragons, and they consider it a great honor to be eaten by a greater creature, the best being dragons. No one takes them seriously, at all, for any reason.
>>
>>46052286
No. I'm using a modified version of some dude's homebrew that has +2 dex, +1 cha (originally wis, but I'm running mine as dragonwrought), small size, 30 ft move, darkvision, sunlight sensitivity, and a nerfed version of pack tactics (only 1 attack per round).
>>
>>46052206
No, because Hobgoblins are all HONORABRU and shit. They're basically a parody of Japanese samurai, specifically Sengoku Jidai era samurai. They're exceptionally organized and structured as a society and tend to rule over mountain fiefdoms. Only their tribalism prevents them from ruling significant land holdings the way humans and other races do.

Bugbears, meanwhile, are like ogres if ogres were a bit smaller, a bit smarter, and had their shit together.
>>
>>46052286
No, and likely never will. But it is fairly easy to play a creature as a homebrew race.

The german Kobold is conceptually the same as the irish Goblin if you look at the folklore.

My peeve is a snake-haired person called a Medusa. Medusa was a cursed creature called a Gorgon. These creatures are called Gorgons in MTG, however. The Gorgon in D&D is another creature entirely... So that screwed up everything in the way that you can't change it back. Plus, players who aren't that interested in mythology will have a better picture in mind when hearing 'a medusa'.

If I want Bahamut, i'd rather the enigmatic dragon-god summon from Final Fantasy that shoots a massive laser beam from space to obliterate your foes. Not something that doddles around in human form helping peasants.

The worst offender in this sort of situation is 'pegasi'. A Latin pluralization (used in English) of a Greek name belonging to an individual mythological horse.

If you won't say 'pegasuses', it should frankly be 'pegasoi'.

Just have different breeds of Kobold.

Dragon Tribe, Wolf Tribe, Gnome Tribe.

Gnobolds are the retarded offspring of Gnomes and Kobolds. They possess higher magical power than either of their parents, but initially lack the brainpower to use it. Furthermore, they are trusting and don't have very good survival instincts. That said, they are the friendliest breed of Kobold to modern society, and they have a knack for learning through mimicry.

Those few that do manage to survive long enough gain enough intelligence to become sapient, and with it, a lot of power to throw around. While Gnobolds have the shortest life expectancy of all Kobolds, they also surprisingly have the highest natural longevity of all Kobolds, with the capacity to outlive even Elves. With that age comes more and more intelligence, and thus higher control over their steadily growing magical abilities.

Gnobolds are shunned by most races. Gnomes and Kobolds both view them as absolutely disgusting, being the half-breed spawn of both of them. Others shun them for more practical reasons, such as their lack of control over their volatile magical abilities Gnobolds don't last long in the wild, as they lack the survival instincts of animals and the knowledge of sapient beings--although predators don't last very long either, as emotion plays a large part in how their magic manifests itself. The best hope for a Gnobold is to mimic humans doing human things, and hope that the humans accept them instead of just killing them outright. With proper training, gnobolds can learn basic chores and a modicum of control over their burgeoning power.

While all Gnobolds go through a larval period wherein they aren't actually sapient, the ones who do somehow live long enough to achieve sapience eventually remember everything that happened to them when they were still animals. They have a tendency to repay their debts in kind, whatever they may be.

If I were building a setting and wanted to give Kobolds a civilization and cities off their own, how so you suppose I should go about doing it?

I look at the history of the Orcs/Orsimer in the Elder Scrolls series and part of me likes the idea of the Kobold race once having a grand civilization and a shining city of their own, but which was sacked and pillaged in ancient times. Theyve tried to restore their city and civilization several times in the past, only to be quite thoroughly stomped back down by the other bigger races.

I like them, but I avoid taking the traps to the extremes of the meme version of tucker's kobolds. At some level of traps, the players use of smart tactics and caution is irrelevant, that sheer statistics indicates they will die because there are enough traps that they will statistically miss enough of them to get killed.

Not even slightly fishy, as a matter of fact. But people didn't realize that until relatively recently, because they assumed a connection between the consonantal root 'dg', meaning 'fish', and the name 'dgn'. But there's a rarer root 'dgn', meaning 'grain', which is where the deity's name originated.

I actually don't hate kobolds, but the idea of having them be goblins who are superior in every technological and tactical aspect and nothing else is a little fucky.

In my campaign world, I use lizard-halfling kobolds who are actually generally a society composed entirely of pilgrims looking for enlightenment and their dragon gods that have abandoned them long ago (dragons don't exist in my setting, at least not anymore). Some Kobolds worship serpentmen god-emperors alongside serpentmen, and some worship giant scaly beasts like fantasy Deinosuchus or Behir just because that's the closest thing to a dragon they've been able to find. Some form really intensely defensive societies that hoard relics and kidnap food sacrifices to great reptilian beasts, while others are really just peaceful eternal pilgrims and explorers looking for some sign of a golden age when the dragons ruled the sky that might have never even existed in the first place.

I think that any creature can work in a campaign if they're used well, but fap bait is never a good reason to include a creature in a campaign unless you and your players agree beforehand to have it be a Magical Realm game.

I like them. I run them as extremely physical weak, and not nearly as numerous as Goblins, but very intelligent and industrious, and thus naturally, cautious and paranoid. Thus, Kobolds make excellent advisors for immoral enterprises, and can wind up with a lot of money. One of my main recurring sort-of-villains is basically Kobold Lex Luthor; any of the PCs could beat his ass, but they're too afraid of whatever contingencies he's set up, and he keeps making himself JUST USEFUL ENOUGH to leave around.

Kobolds are okay.

I like them from more anthropomorphic to more traditional NPC kill-them race. They've since become something of an underdog player character species because they're small and quirky and multicolored scale things are cute. And everybody likes taking things like pygmy marmosts or koala bears and giving them god powers, proving they can be wicked and smart and horrible, too, so naturally with Pun-Pun and PC races, kobolds wind up that way to.

but I still like'em. Passe or not.

>>
>>46077998
Hey, I'm just sayin': they are really fucking tasty. You should give the kebab a try.

>sapient
depends on the setting.

Plus, if they only exist to fuck with the other races, there's nothing bad about genociding the lot, much less processing the corpses for food.

In what settings are kobolds not sapient creatures?
>>
>>46078080
I want to say I've heard of one where a "kobold" is some prety much mindless creature that exists only to mine for he sake of mining or something. But for the life of me I can't rember what series it was, or if indeed it even exists...

There is absolutely nothing wrong with sexy kobolds.

Small little races aren't typically very sexy, nobody in their right mind thinks Halflings or Dwarves are sexy, so kobolds are a good race to put in this spot instead.

There are clearly plenty of people not in their right mind when it comes to halflings. And dwarf women can be pretty good-looking too if they don't insist on the weird bearded lady thing and you're into thick body types.

You don't mind if I take this idea for kobolds in my setting, do you?

It would fit well with making them robots.

I've always preferred kobolds as more competent, just with fewer numbers and physically weaker. Kobolds will use their traps and terrain to good effect, while goblins just mob you with wave after wave until you die or kill enough goblins to scare the rest off.

Even then, Dwarven women often end up too blocky...

True, but the only mecha dragoness I've got would probably catch a ban for "Furry."

Huh. I did not know that, really should be the other way round for crunch to follow fluff.

Now I'm wondering what a true goblin civilisation would be like with cities and whatnot.

5e kobolds are an anomaly
They've always been at least equal with goblins when it comes to mental stats before.
>>
>>46068858
Whats the actual word you weeaboo fuck.
>>
>>46080095
In pathfinder, they have equal mental stats in both bestiary entries and pc race statblocks. Except for charisma. Goblins have a -2 cha compared to bolds.
