>I'm afraid you have "Shit DM doesn't understand the concept of a story and thinks that unless players feel encouraged to fuck up every scene, they're being railroaded" syndrome.
I understand the concept of a story just fine.

>Story: "an account of imaginary or real people and events told for entertainment."
>Plot: "the main events of a play, novel, movie, or similar work, devised and presented by the writer as an interrelated sequence."

I just don't feel a need to force specific moments to happen in a pre-scripted manner to make these things happen.

I make situations and characters with motivations and goals, and I make a timeline of what happens if the PCs don't get involved (as there will be many interrelated plots going on simultaneously and the PCs won't be able to be present to fuck with all of them).

The story and plot come from how the PCs try to fuck with the events in my predesigned timeline, and how it works out for them.

Sometimes they stop the necromancer from raising an army of zombies. Other times they ignore the necromancer to chase down the dragon worshipping cult that's murdering people, and the necromancer now has an army.

Other times still, they fuck off and lay low for a while (or perhaps temporarily abandon the plot to pursue personal goals), and when they come back to it, stuff has happened without their meddling.

Why do you feel a need to force specific events to happen a specific way?

>>46042606
I also deliberately incorporate random plot elements. Not just "ye old wandering monster table", but tables (or quick and dirty software) that might randomize the sequence of major events, or place various major NPCs in unexpected (but plausible) locations, etc.

The game's more fun if I don't know how things are going to play out, or what's going to happen.

No. Detect Magic will tell you that there is something magical in the area. After the 3rd round, you can tell that there is an Illusion (glamer) effect in the area if you make the Spellcraft check.

So a question... I've seen a lot of people here say PF sucks and even more if it is your first TTRPG, Why is that?

I mean I have looked into a few other systems and from what I've seen Pathfinder is rather simple and easy compared to systems that have 8 base stats and use two of them for all skill checks in addition to a number of extra things.

It's not like I am going to change system now that I've finally got a small round to start. But I am wondering what the reasoning might be?
>>
>>46043824
It's canon, yeah. The relationship's actually pretty cute.

>>46043824
The comics have the rogue and cleric in a relationship with each other. It's a real thing.

Pathfinder is incredibly rules heavy. It gets bogged down with so many +'s to everything that it's easy to slip up on what stacks with what and so on. Rules light systems like 5E are much easier for newer players, less moving parts to keep track of and fewer unintendedly game-breaking combinations.

>>46043978
I have all the comics, but no screenshots, sorry.

The party had been traveling together for a while, but in the first issue, the cleric joins. A couple issues later, only a few days in the story, Merisial gets chomped on by a black dragon and the cleric saves her life. While she is recovering, they start fucking.

They are cute, but I don't really understand why they started a relationship. They don't really have all that much in common or synch well together.

Meanwhile Valeros is constantly pegged and mocked as a womanizer and Lothario, but is never shown to hook up with anyone, instead being shot down at every turn by everything with breasts.
>>
>>46043867
Look at Valeros' right eyebrow. It's extending well past where it should have stopped.

It also doesn't help that in this image he's built like a gorilla, with giant arms and tiny legs.

Basically I apply a huge amount of Rule 0 everywhere. And as I said, I have seen systems that make Pathfinder look easy as pie.
>>
Black asps are sinister assassin monks. They trade stunning fist and still mind for poison use and Adder Strike as a bonus feat. They can trade monk class abilities (if vanilla monk) or ki powers (if unchained monk) for new ki powers unique to the archetype, usually themed around poison, defeating divination, and similar things.

Sage counselors are mentors who like to speak in metaphors a lot. They tweak monk class skills, trade 1st/2nd/6th level bonus feats for for Combat Expertise/Improved Feint/Greater Feint, ignoring the prereqs, can spend ki to feint as a swift action in exchange for being able to spend ki for an extra attack, and eventually can replace their first attack when flurrying with a feint check in exchange for their 10th level bonus feat, and trade the ability to spend ki to increase their speed for the ability to spend ki to get a +4 Bluff bonus, which also replaces the 4th level ki power for unchained monks.

Question:
Rolling an investigator for Hell's vengeance, taking the role of skill monkey and/or trap roomba. What's the best way to become unstoppable at skills? I'm going Mastermind archetype (slightly worse at finding traps, but able to pass my skill off to others with A Quiet Word), and I'm picking up both Expanded Inspiration and Underworld Inspiration at level 3. Other talents I'm looking at are Inspirational Expertise and Tenacious Inspiration, as well as Inspired Intelligence to pick up what I trade out for the archetype (will be late game, linguistics isn't all that useful and I'll leave spellcraft to the actual mages). Are there any must have feats or items for a skill-heavy build? Are any of the skill unlocks worth it for a build like this?

My combat effectiveness comes from Quick Study at level 5 and Sickening Offensive at level 7, allowing me to no-save debuff a target for as lnog as I focus on him. The barbarian can worry about killing them.

I like him a lot too. He's just in it for the money, fame and bitches.

He doesn't get much of the last two, but he works hard for his share of the treasure.

I think he and Seoni have a much better dynamic than the lesbians do. Seoni and Valeros seem to synch very well together, I would have expected a relationship between them a lot sooner than Merisial and Kyra. They work well together and while Seoni is a planner and Valeros does things by the seat of his pants, he's smart enough to lsten to her when she has an idea. Likewise, Seoni respects Valeros and his courage and knows he would do anything to save her or one of the other party members. I like their relationship, more brother and sister than anything, but I would like to see if there's room for expansion within the party. All the relationship stories being piled on Kyra and Merisial is getting old.

a stylized spell as it is being cast is 10 higher than normal.
The Knowledge (arcana) DC to identify a stylized spell, its
effects, or the materials it creates is 10 higher than normal,
as is the DC to recognize your magical signature with

.
When you apply this feat to a spell, you can attempt to
disguise your stylized spell as another spell of the same
school and subschool with the same descriptors. The other
spell must be either the same spell level as the stylized
spell (before applying the metamagic adjustment) or 1 spell
level higher. If you do so, the stylized spell gains the ruse
descriptor (see page 192) and takes on some superf icial
aspects of the other spell. As usual for a spell with the ruse
descriptor, identif ication attempts that fail by 10 or less
mistakenly identify it as the chosen spell (those that fail by
more can’t identify it at all). A stylized spell uses up a spell
slot 1 level higher than the spell’s actual level.

As a note, most of the things in this book are definitely focused with more espionage/intrigue campaigns in mind. In that light, a lot of the options are really neat and interesting. don't expect a lot of power like in ACG, UC, or UM

There's a lot of chaff here regardless of the campaign type, though.

I have posted here before. I am writing a adventure path using Paizo and DSP content. I now need to begin play testing of book 1. Anyone who is interested please use the attached character guide to create a character.

My skype is: Slowcogs (the cartoon one)

If you wish to play please send me a proposed character. If it is obvious you didn't read the character guide from your sheet I am just going to deny you on the spot.

The game will either be on Tuesday or Wednesday evening PST. Exact scheduling will be dependent on group. It will be played by text and live.

Reply to this post with questions.

This, Acid Splash while you're holding an Acid Flask is a Touch AC targeting 1d3+1 damage (average 2.5) ability that goes through DR.
Compare to a crossbow, which hits AC, and averages 3.5 but doesn't go through DR.

Your Acid Flash will be far more efficient with your low to-hit, and doesn't cost you gold to buy, nor space in your hands to carry around.

Also, you should be crafting scrolls to be useful more than twice.

And really only twice? Where's your INT score and your favored school? That should be two more at least.

Hey /pfg/ I need some help with making my party's wizard not useless. I'm running a game for a 3 person party; druid, cleric, and wizard. The problem they're running into is that with each of them taking a watch shift while they sleep, including the druid's animal companion, the wizard can only get six hours of sleep.
The rules as we understand them say that a wizard needs 8 hours of rest plus 1 hour of preparation to use their spells.
Outside of GM hand waving is there a good way for me to deal with this so the wizard player doesn't feel completely worthless?

They don't get spontaneous casting. In fact, they LOSE the little bit of it they already had.

Honestly, it seems rather junk. You lose BAB, weaken transforming (Which is further hurt by the lost BAB), and the spells you get turn up 1 level higher than the base class.

I think it is a travesty that the warlock, and to a lesser degree, the zealot are now archetypes. They pulled out the specializations, gutted them, and made archetypes for them. They could have found a way to make it work for the four specs. In my home game I'm allowing cabalists and warlocks to share talents.

The Achilles' heel of dragons in PF is their low Dex scores and really low touch ACs.

A spellcaster can take major advantage of that with ray spells, especially ones that do Dex damage, like Ray of Enfeeblement and Wracking Ray.

All the really good ones are short range, though, so you'll want a party that can coordinate fighting ability and terrain control (spells like web, etc that slow enemies).

If you have access to 3pp, check out the Warder class from Path of War for a defensive martial who can actually do a good bodyguard job (the Paizo ones can't because they have no ability to control the terrain).

Also, DO NOT try to focus on any healing in combat, unless it's a specific build that can fire it off free every round, like the Oradin.

Only cause I love you.

I mean, the cloistered cleric was pretty much just a better version of a cleric.

It's not that good in Pathfinder because Divine Power doesn't give full BAB.

The issue with that is really that most 6th level casters don't just use level for level what a 9th level guy uses. In part because they get each level of spells at a different time than a full caster. It's why the Bloodrager has so many utterly useless spells, as you can't expect fireball to be impressive when it turns up at 16th level.

Classes with a 6th level casting kinda need their own spell list designed for them or to steal from another 6th level.

Woo!

Does the Witch give anything that's really magical girl? I don't recall magical girls being too heavy on the Enchantment spells, which is a real strength of the Witch list. Evocation is also a real weak point for Witches, while it's a Magical Girl strength.

Honestly, even Paizo would have been hard pressed to fuck up "Find and Replace: Chaotic Evil for Lawful Evil"

What makes the meguca archetype so shit?

It gets 6th level casting. That makes it tier 3 right?

I dunno, I have faith in them.

Guys! GUYS!

What if we begged DSP to make a good mahou shoujo archetype?

It can be even be CHA-based
>>
>>46045523

It gets a list of spells mostly designed to buff a bit combat monster pet.

Spoilers: The familiar they get is not able to be a big combat monster pet.

Look again.

Cabalist casts like a Magus (Prepared 6th level caster) but just uses the witch spell list from 6 down. The rate they get spells IS that of a 6th level casting class.

Plus, are you even really going to be doing much blasting as a 6th level caster unless you're pulling magus-like shenanigans? It's not the best even for fullcasters.

Honestly, if they made a Martial Initiator with Elemental Flux and the innate ability to throw bolts of energy would make a pretty good magical girl.
>>
>>46045537
Why do I want to create a mahou shoujo god and an archetype for holy classes?
>>
>>46045424
I love you too, Screenshot anon.

the hunter archetypes aren't anything to write home about, but it's still kinda cool.
