I'm playing D&D 5e right now and I'm trying to make a knightly PC who is awesome in mounted combat but can still be useful off his mount.
I'm thinking of either making him a Fighter/ Purple Knight Dragon or should I make a Paladin Oath of the Crown or Oath of Devotion?

Personally I enjoy role-playing paladin more too, but it kinda depends on if you want a soldier /warrior type, or a hero / champion type.

I really enjoy being the only combat-focused character in my group. Sure, we have some mage-types that are pretty powerful in a pinch, but for pure asskicking, I'm the only one up to the task really.
I play him as a sort of a knucklehead, but with a heart of gold and at least TRYING to uphold some sort of ideals that he learned from his old master. This is in stark contrast to the rest of the group: A cowardly telepath, a scholarly wizard and a conniving politician. They're all non-confrontational and sneaky.
I think it's a pretty good setup. Our DM has said to me that it's good that I picked a more "driven" character type, as the others tend to just mill about a lot and discuss shit for hours instead of moving the plot along. I think it's a good mix though. It behooves a group to have a variety of different personalities for their PCs, or things would probably spiral out of control real fast.
I mean, if everyone were like me, we'd probably be dead a long time ago. If we were like the telepath, we'd be hiding in a cellar somewhere and never get anywhere. Wizard, we'd be sitting reading books and never get out of the library. Politician, we would probably have stabbed each other in the back a long time ago.
Finally, it's fun to have the muscle to slap people around a bit if they get out of line. Straight-up threats work pretty well as long as you don't piss off the wrong people.
