Welcome to the Accidental Magical Girl thread!

Various worlds and multiverses have become connected together via the mysterious Overcity, a sprawling landscape inhabited by monsters and magical beings. Girls and boys endowed with their new supernatural powers can work together solving conflicts that arise!

>This is NOT a greentext adventure style CYOA with one GM and thread posting to dictate the adventure, but rather a hub thread for multiple storycrafters to use.
A majority of activity (including campaigns) instead happens in the IRC, which is open for newbies to join.
Characters can be rolled with either the CYOA's purple PDF which is intended as a writing prompt and is in the process of developing an independent auxiliary combat system, or AMGC's blue pdf which contains combat rules for PNP campaigns along with the rolls.

Post builds, roleplay, write stuff.

I am confused as to how perks work here. Does this mean I can get 5 or 6 perks alongside the perks I would have had if I wasn't a Monster?

Sounds pretty bad to have normal love.
>>
>>46033216
Just because you're cursed (or blessed) to be forever a child or teenager doesn't mean you should let it dominate what you should do.

It will take a lot of explaining, and maybe your lover may be arrested if you don't clear things up, but you have to fight back against the forces who have tried to screw you over. (Or maybe they didn't try to screw you over. Who knows at this point.)

Also we DO have Magical Boys in somewhat large numbers. Try dating them and see how that works out.

I'm not just going to sit here while a bunch of Space Fae get their jollies off watching rug munchers go at it.

Going from Guy -> Girl is a pretty big physical change
>>

>Sexuality
>Biologically
You must be new. To anthropology.

Mmmm OK so if we get as realistic as possible and narrow down our focus to how biology acts after being filtered and nourished by PURELY AMERICAN/BRITISH and similar cultures (i don't feel right generalizing so many countries as British clones, but to be general) reacts, like super realistic, very realistic, more realistic than any anime every would be both in theory and practice, sexuality could be CURVED towards either direction based on the presence of particular hormones in the blood, notably estrogen and testosterone. That most people who's transitioned sexes (people who've undergone the childhood neurochemical development of one sex and adult+ development of another) are BISEXUAL is probably a useful statistic to apply in this case. So realistically every trans shojo would be different, but generally most of them would be bi and the ones that weren't could be any other sexuality.

But this isn't biology, this is anime~
So: how many magically age/sex altering protagonists have notable changes in their sexuality? (referring both to potency and preference) I don't know. Anybody got an answer?

It should also be noted that most mahou in this cannon are immortal ie. physically unchanging and blood chemistry, if they even have blood chemistry, may not even be able to affect their development since, you know, they no longer develop.

... I don't headcannon humans who've sold their innocence to the devil in exchange for unchangingness and a life-taking body as actually fertile. Like do they have periods? No ovaries = no hormones to begin with.

Wow so there are just like so many factors here it would be stupid to tell anyone to pick any one of these logics and that they had to follow that. TL;DR: MAKE MAHOU WITH WHATEVER SEXUALITIES YOU WANT

Say, anons, PMMM had an interesting way to show character development. If you read the spinoffs, you probably know that Kyouko was a softie wannabe hero type, and in the timeframe of a year, she changed a lot taken the circumstances she suffered through.

Amelia's a diet Sayaka.

Whether she bends before she breaks, comes to terms with her own actual motivations, or just burns herself up through senseless conflict is up in the air...

But on the whole, things are likely to get worse for her, small/early positive changes aside.
>>
How many have you saved?
>>
>>46040909
My mahou Primrose embraced their new super abilities and new role of their patron's bukako fully and sortof abandoned any comfort they could have earned for themselves away to, like, prove to themselves how diehard dedicated they were. They could see the future and read people's hearts so they were never caught off guard, their super dexterity and double specializations ensured they were their own DPS, rogue, debuffer, and buffer, and if things ever did go south they could fly away. Their absolute direction and mental link to their knowledge-themed patron meant they were never without direction or reassurance, and they always knew they were doing the right thing. Their one fault, their thirst for flesh, was even countered by their cleansing object and all their monstrous abilities could be hidden without a proper disguise. They were bad-ass and cold and calculated and fulfilling all of their values more than completely, and more than that they were the instrument of their patron's will, part of them and thus part of something eternal. They didn't need or want anything more in their life than that. ((among my friends her build was top fucking notch though I'm sure it's mediocre by online standards))

Then they were purified and completely abandoned.
>>
>>46045251
Cue completely lost phase, no idea what to do and in stupefied denial a little bit. The monstrous strength, bird eyes, claws, and wings they relied on to find otherwise inaccessible safe-havens left her and left her unrecognizable to her self. ((also many of her perks were story-wise the influence of her patron, and to get her to fit with the rules and story I had to re-spec her post-purified self point-buy style--she now has--2 for the beast + 4 for bronze coins + 2 for a silver I had to spend--about eight less stat points in total and a four fewer monstrous tricks)) This was followed by hugely timid phase, without direction, protection, and with a huge reduction in power and no experience with her new magic tree. She didn't have any magical girl backup or even any acquaintances on good terms to fall back on. I think she's on her way to a post-breakdown soul-searching phase now and hopefully the dere part of dandere, but who knows maybe she'll die. Like it's not unlikely. She's an underpowered utility class with no main party and she probably pissed off the Puchuu a bit.

Yep. A lot can happen in a year. Her arc is kinda the opposite of Kyouko's I guess.
>>
Why do I keep doing this to myself?

Depends a lot on the competence of the monster I would say and what their desire is.

Get two or three monsters working together and some cash and you have a hellishly hard battle for most magical girl groups.

A feral berserker though would pretty rapidly get fucked if they sucked at hiding well in the meguca part of town. I kind of imagine the average competence level would be in the mid range. With extremely dangerous ones at the top, Much less so on the bottom and a large chunk of very deadly but not instantly run away as the large mid range.

Whenever a vampire was nearby, she'd get menstral cramps. That's pretty much it. But if you are interested in the whole "magical periods" deal, just google it. You find some...interesting things.

http://www.menstruation.com.au/contributors/moonflow.html

>A woman's bleeding was considered a cosmic event, relating and connecting one to the moon, the lunar cycles and the tides. She was thought to be at the height of her power at this time, and for this reason was encouraged to spend time listening to her inner voice which would often offer suggestions and wisdom which would benefit the whole tribe

>The word 'ritual' comes from 'rtu' which is Sanskrit for menses. The blood from the womb which nourished the unborn child was believed to have 'mana' or 'breath of life'.

>The rituals of many traditions from Taoists to the Ancient Egyptians involved the ingestion of menstrual blood mixed with red wine to increase spiritual power. In Ancient Greece spring festivals included the spreading on the earth of corn mixed with menstrual blood to increase fertility.

periods do not make people irrational per-se
they make them feel weird and they have more or less of various emotions in ways they're not too used to dealing with
but an excess of emotion isn't an absence of reason
they're still just as capable of checking themselves as they are any other week, though our culture constructed and perpetuated the belief that periods do make people irresponsible, thus allowing people to use it as an excuse, thus allowing others to think they've observed and verified this tendency, thus causing people to say and treat people as if that's the case

But...

Pls. Unless it's a magical period, plot device or something, it pretty much would have no effect on magical girling other than a minor annoyance that doesn't even have to be mentioned at all. or you run into a very desperate vampire.

All you need to know is
> Young girls given magical powers that allows them to transform and fight bad guys under a secret identity to save something because DESTINY.
Or just do Harry Potter but swap the robes for magical outfits. Wands can stay wands or can be switched out for various weapons. If all your players are on the the same team, they tend to have a common theme together. Like they can all be based on planets, constellations, deities, flowers, forms of love, gemstones, etc. I also recommend
>>46079787 or just read a manga or two.
>>

Don't do Harry Potter
or do but it won't be a vanilla magical girl campaign

Harry Potter has intrigue (kinda) and clues and puzzles and rebellion against authority and whatnot

Magical Girl plots are too simplistic for those kinds of clues, their "mysteries" are revealed through weird soap-opera like twists and a lot of shit is symbolic, but like the symbolism takes center stage and realism matters but matters less. They make up for plot complexity with emotional complexity, with pure energy, self-expression, and bliss. But most importantly THEY DON'T DO THIS WELL OR TOO SERIOUSLY THIS IS A RELAXED SHOW FOR CHILDREN AND STICKING TO THE "MAIN THEMES" IS ALL THAT MATTERS NONE OF THE LITTLE SHIT ACTUALLY HAS TO ADD UP AT THE END.

Imagine Harry Potter with none of the "riddles", with none of the studying (magical girls powers come from listening to your heart or something, not listening to a book), none of the teachers, none of the Arthurian influences, none of the "safe places" like #4 Private Drive or Hogwarts (places harry had to be or volde would kill 'em), none of the Hogwarts basically. That part where Harry castes a Patronus and it's his dad's, and that part were SNAP TURNS OUT TO BE GUD GUY ALL ALONG, and the part with Lilly's magic fish bowl dying in Slughorn's home--THAS MAGICAL GURL TERRITORY.

But also that part in the bathrooms when Harry rips Draco's chest open, that's also Magical Gurl territry. (just without the accidentally part)

So, what kind of symbolism is standard? I tried watching the Madoka thing but the voices got on my nerves so I didn't make it through the second episode. Currently trying to read the card captor which is somewhat less aggravating but I'm barely into it.
>>
>>46084593
>He quit before episode 3

It feels like it's 2011 again. But, anyway. Maybe the genre just isn't for you. Got an important question, though. Did you watch the dub? If so, that was a mistake.

In any case, common standard symbolism is really, really plain stuff - loss of innocence, developing sexuality - classic coming of age stuff. Madoka in particular is super Faustian as you might have guessed. Revolutionary Girl Utena, if you want to count it, goes hard on the rose imagery and some fairytale stuff - I think Princess Tutu is the same with the fairytale things.

So, really, it's more about finding a theme for your symbology.
>>
>>46084593
OH MY GOD you didn't watch the English Madoka did you? Subtitles. Get the subtitles. If the subtitles are fan made, if they were made literally days after the original series premiered with no time for polishing, all the better. The die-hard fans really made superior sub.
Like fuck the first time I saw the official English dub I literally thought twelve-year-olds on youtube tried dubbing it unoffically with their shitty equipment and crap bilingualism. No it was the legit. My soul grew dimmer that day.

Mmm watch at least the first episode of Sailor Moon, maybe up to the third+ if you like it but seeing at least one later episode is more important than seeing more than that if you're pressed for time. That show really defined modern maguka as a genre. (also the 90s series has AMAZING animation)

Card Captor Sakura is pretty but also very slow. You can find manga scanlations online super easy it's literally just the anime with all the useless filler torn out. But you won't get the foundational understanding of Magical Gurl from it as you will get from Sailor Moon you'll mostly only get inspiration and an understanding of how MG works with a modern-world update and played in a small-town aesthetic. And Kero. Kero really brought the Patronizing And Allpowerful Yet Somehow Friendly And Super Cute puchuu trope out.

Sailor Moon followed up by Sakura is GOLDEN. Maduka is really something you should watch after that, cause you know it's so "self aware" and post-everything (i love it)

Japanese Symbolism... isn't my forte desu. Time-wise some other anon-chan or a well sought out web article can get you the very basics better and quicker than I could.
>>
>>46084857
GOLD GOLD GOLD GOLD

it goes WAY overboard with the symbolism if you're looking for very specific symbols to port into your game. if all you want is an understanding of the genre's common symbols Utena will give you that and a crap load of extra symbolism thrown in.

it goes into symbolism way heavy though. hmmm there's this early episode of Sailor Moon where some evil guy sends the sailor scouts a train to and airport and they just... get on it. thas classic symbolism. it's like them being naive and young and letting the guy rule their lives. he's trying to kill them and they play right into his trap because they're trying to do what they think brave serious super heroes would do instead of just being brave and serious in their own way, i think. (i was like 5 when i watched it my memory is exceptional but the particulars of what all of that meant should be taken with salt.) Utena is basically JUST that kind of symbolism with most of the literal plot they needed to sow it together just forgone. substance forsaken in the quest for meaning~

No, I tried the sub. If the pacing improves I could give it another shot. I'll try it by turning the sound off I guess and just read the subtitles. I just couldn't stand all the high-pitched squeal voices whenever they weren't monologuing.

So finding a theme for my symbology - not sure what'd be good for that and it sounds pretty out of my usual favoured characterization of loyalty/spirituality/independence. I might just ask my players what kind of characters they're interested in first. I do like the addition of the mundane in card captor though, that the magic isn't just straight up super powers so they use roller skates to get around more quickly. Seems like it could reward player creativity within that framework.

>>46084947
I'd sorta wanted to avoid sailor moon because all my memories of it as a kid were my sister watching it and playing around and being incredibly obnoxious about it when I just wanted to watch zoids or dragonball. But I guess I can suffer through an episode or two.

If you're writing in the irc don't bother or you'll be called out for trying too hard
If you're gming or writing elsewhere elsewhere the rule of threes is always golden. Let's talk visual symbolism for what its worth. Pick 3 major symbols - like a rose kept wrapped in thorny chains, a star trapped on the point of a crescent moon, a caged bird. You want symbols that have underlying sexuality that can be projected onto and associated mythos. Beauty and the beast as a fairy tale archetype, NOT just the Disney plotline, is a fairly accessible way to go about it.
You want to provoke a snap reaction from your magical girl and the interaction she has with these symbols. What does it mean if the villain leaves a locked rose everywhere he's been? Could it be he's threatening our heroine? Maybe tragically misunderstood and in love? Or is it a simple threat that he will try to lock us up? Or is it connected with his power somehow?
Obviously these are on the more emotional and feminine spectrum of logic, but that's what magical girling is all about. The symbol, meaningless as it can be if you try to use rationality, is a projection that draws a connection that otherwise wouldn't be there.
Another symbol could be for your magical girl herself. I don't think it needs to be said that femininity, coming of age, sexual maturation are all common themes here to work with and there's hundreds if not thousands to work with. Whatever symbol you pick, don't shy away from a plot where that symbol starts having a literal presence and affect on your mahou. Think: Cowgirl from Utena, Sayaka the orchestral mer-witch. Sure it can be nonsensical, over the top, but you're trying to get a meaningful emotional reaction here that ties in to themes that are especially relevant to a young girl.
Last, visual symbols as plot get a little more complex. The best recent example I can think of is YuriKuma

Right, so visual representations of your overall plot.
YuriKuma's butterflies? Bam. Plot about butterfly effect, every NPC, enemy you talk to will later show up again to emphasize the fact that your choices matter.
Bride in a box? Enjoy your plot about the oppression of women/girls in your setting. From the "man" aka dude villains, or how damsels in distress are a role to take on, or about how to weaponize feminity. Tons of places you could go here including an Ice King kinda scenario: dude kidnapping princesses.
Love bullet? Plot about how sacrificial love is THE ultimate expression of a relationship. Better have an ending in mind that will cause us to shed bitch tears. Our MC dying, her beloved friend taking the final blow so we can save humanity, you get the idea.

Three symbols. For the intrigue and relationship between your characters and your conflict, one for your girls internal or external struggle, and one for plot. This is probably the most straightforward and cookiecutter explanation I can give, but don't be afraid to be experimental~ Or even have symbols that you've attached no meaning to yourself and leave it up to your audience to draw the lines together. Worked for Eva and Utena.

Hope that helped!

I read this but by and large it doesn't mean anything. It speaks with a broad brush and there is little of substance outside of 'if you like this word I repeated, try this thing from the 70's.' While it must be decent for someone who is familiar with some of those works, it is mostly a 'watch this' list to anyone else and not a terribly convincing one at that.

Multivac-chan has to answer the last question somehow, anon.
>>
Imagine Multivac-chan eventually becoming the leader of humankind after many, many millions of years spent pondering the Question.

Her puchuu comes to her, and even it has grown weary and ragged in its heart.

"I couldn't have imagined all this after all this time," it says.

"Me neither. But there are things that must be done. As long as magic still exists, everything will be all right."

Pats' parents probably call but they don't pick up because they're unsure how to explain "I'm a twelve year old girl now. I need money."

"I'm two twelve year old girls now. Also I need money."

I'm sure if they sit down with them and have quiz hour they can accept that, yes, this has happened to him. -and maybe let hi-, I mean he-, I mean them, have some money or come back home.

I mean really now. You guys may have shitty parents if you can't tell your parents the very strange, yet important truth. Of course I expect problems, but still. Good Scenario: They're your parents, they put you on this Earth, raised you up into the world, they give a shit about you.
Bad Scenario: Your parents are sheeeeeeeeet, and bothering with them is useless or may worsen things.

That being said...

"True Love" isn't something Belinda really thinks about much, but she wants to believe in it. At the very least, she knows her parents love each other, even if they sometimes disagree over things.

>>46117038
Not exactly. Belinda's pacifistic nature doesn't exactly mesh with her worryingly powerful, yet hard to handle Fire magic. Generally, she would rather flee from battle than harm her opponents. The exception is when someone else's life is on the line or she goes up against an entity that possesses people. The former case leads to her fighting reluctantly, but the latter case makes it much more difficult for her to restrain herself. Purification by fire is not a safe process for the host.

>>46129703
Her body count miraculously remains zero. Still, there have been a number of close calls or deaths in proximity to her and she feels guilty over them.

>>46154653
Somewhat. They know what happened to Belinda and miss her, but she can't really live at home anymore. She does try to call and write to them, but the incident that turned her into a magical girl makes it difficult for her to return. Her parents would accept her back well enough, but explaining the situation to others would be impossible.

Hello again. Talked about it with my potential players but what they asked for was a country-wide/lightly international political game involving magical girls (also they had assumed more players involved than I had) and I couldn't figure out how to reconcile what they wanted to achieve with what I picked up from the suggested media being very tightly focused on a specific area and the characters - not to mention the scope itself and the quantity of npcs and settings I'd need to build with the level of detail to make the genre work with that scope is beyond what my free time allows.

Thanks for the help, it helped me realize that the game they want I wouldn't be able to provide.

Lynnia: Since the ship she and her classmates were on crashed, he thinks she's dead. Would be interesting for her to meet him again somehow. Before that, she and her dad were both into sports so he acted as her coach many times as they trained and played together.

Alexander: Mother wants him to reach the top of everything as much as possible so he can have a better life, so she's the most strict on him about his social status and rubbing elbows with important people. His dad is laid back, and wished his son and wife relax a bit more, so sometimes he takes them both on suprise "vacations" which consist of the cheapest trips possible. (staying in 2 star motels, seeing 'giant yarn balls', etc.) Alex is a bit embarrassed by this so he keeps up an appearance as if he's rich, but still cares for him family.

Xoxhi: Being the youngest of 3, and also promised to a god, her parents raised her to be a perfect wife. Cooking, cleaning, proper worshipping, visits to the temples. They love her and she them, and want her to be the best gift to the god/patron she's betrothed to. Her siblings however, see this as very, very wrong and thus fight with her and her parents often about it. They even sought out to be magical themselves to try and stop this wedding somehow.

Oliver: He/she didn't know her parents and was adopted by the coven, so his parental figures are various priests and nuns. They were good to him, but he just didn't agree with thier beliefs and didn't like being locked away from the world.

Brush: A priest who is convinced that Brush is his son, and is part of the reason his village sees the boy as a god. He sells "blessed" trinkets, organizes worshiping ceremonies, and teaches Brush on how to properly act. The monster boy knows his 'father' means well, and he enjoys helping but he tries his best to live as normal as a life as possible. While his father doesn't agree entirely, he does see it as an opportunity for the boy to learn more about life.

Alas no, she does not. She was just a girl I rolled quite a while back and have been sending on adventures that are admittedly out of her league.

Still, you now have me wondering about the Oz setting and how that could be mined for some interesting mahou-related ideas...

>country-wide/lightly international political game involving magical girls
It's what happens when the WoD crowd wants to do magical girls.

"If you want to play Mage, then bloody play Mage!"

>the quantity of npcs and settings I'd need to build with the level of detail to make the genre work with that scope
I know right? And I would add "knowing perfectly that so many of them would never achieve any second of 'screentime' because of player choices leading the PCs to never meet them."

I'm not entirely sure why you'd choose to play a magical girl game in WoD anyways - it seems more like a superhero game of some sort (Savage Worlds Supers would probably work actually) would be better suited. Maybe Unknown Armies if you want it to be dark as all fuck.

>hmmm there's this early episode of Sailor Moon where some evil guy sends the sailor scouts a train to and airport and they just... get on it.

That... doesn't happen. If that's the episode I'm thinking of from S1 Sailor Moon, the Evil Guy makes a huge illusion of himself above the entire city and tells the girls to show up for a showdown at the airport that evening or he's just going to set all of Tokyo on fire.

I'm relatively sure Jadeite doesn't send the train for them, but then I'm recalling something from when I was 10, so he might have been watching of it could have been cut in a less than 100% clear way.

For Maeve, yes. When asked if that's canon, I've said that the transformed are biologically female with all that entails - have fun with your periods new mahous. That said, >>46067189 is entirely correct. If having it is something you'd like to use to play for drama, you have to deal it. If NOT having it is something to use to play for drama, you can do that too. If it's something you never want to touch on because it'd get in the way of your action plot, don't mention it. I wrote a writing prompt/adventure seed here, so develop it as you prefer.

>>46109149
Not really. Being a dude in his 30's prior to becoming an involunraty mahou, 'twu wuv' is a fantasy to Maeve. Love - sure. 'True' love is for storybooks.

>>46117038
Eh... not really.

>>46129703
Well... Maeve killed the mahou who got her into this whole mess, so bodycount is 1 as of now.

>>46154653
Nope.
