That's pretty good, especially for a Start Collecting box battalion. I can't wait for Skyre and Eshin to get new stuff.
>>

Is it?

I've never played Warhammer.

I've played Malifaux though.

I've been playing Vermintide a lot and have really gotten into the feel for the fantasy wargaming. Also, they miniatures look badass.

Is this a good starting point? $85 seems like a lot, but it seems to come with a lot of mini's. Also, the Skaven look awesome.

Is this a balanced battalion?

I mean, I really hope they are, so they don't have to suffer the indignity of sucking Stormcast dick for the rest of time.
>>
>>46022797
All of the Start Collecting boxes are really great. They come with enough stuff to make games feel big enough that interesting combinations of units can form, but small enough to be painted and played in a fairly short amount of time. There's enough synergy between units that the Pestilents box seems to be pretty effective. Pull some of the rule books from the OP and flip through them for a feel for the game's setting and rules.

>3 2+ Instant kill on 1w model...
>And d3 mortal wound after combat...
Jeezus, these rules are making the Stardrake more likable for me. The Templar's bow sounds useful for picking off those troublesome models that buff enemy units while his list of weapons seem useful for a given situation.
>6 attacks with a Tempest Axe with a range of 2"
>3 attacks with a Stormlance with a range of 3"
For when you really need to reach that annoying ass buffer and the Inspiration's 1+ to bravery couldn't hurt

As for the Celestant, the Stormbound Blade sounds troublesome with the 4+ to hit, but that chance for the 6 and making 3 more wound rolls sounds devastating, while the hammer sounds like the more reliable to rack in hits. The Shield is definitely a help if it lets you wound dudes trying to bog the drake down nearby on a 3". Plus that charge as well, D3 extra attacks could make a big difference.

The Drake is no pushover as well, Able to delete 3 models right off the bat can be useful if done right and a D3 wounds after combat can help take out any remaining guys. The Lord of the Heavens thing sounds like the most troublesome though. The breath weapon would be the hardest to get each turn and the rain can fall flat when your stuck with a 1 on how many to hit.

The Celestant's Command ability sounds really good since Dracoths already have a strong attack with their claws. Though this 'is' considering if you even have a unit riding Dracoths to begin with. Though for the Stardrake itself it could come in handy.

Well, I guess all that's left is to sell a kidney to even afford a Stardrake and to acquire some loaded dice to maximize fully on rolls.

>>46022797
Its is. Most units are viable in Aos and games tend to be rpetty balanced.
You can either go full fluff or stick with the same faction- keep in mind models with the same faction tend to have a LOT of sinergy with each other. start collecting box is awesome, you add 10/20 basic infantry and a single elite unit and you already have a good army. Wich means 85+30+40 usually wich is 150 and for warhammer standards(300-500 bucks)is pretty neato.

GW has produced some historically awful kits within this new system. The clone army sigmarines, overdesigned varanguards, mirrored CAD-dorfs, monopose catdragon cavalry, and now this poor drake abomination.

Frankly the boring khorne release now look pretty good compared to the other Age of Sigmar stuff. Maybe that was the plan all along, bloodsecrators for the blood god!

Yeah, I did actually. I'm not saying it's as good as back then, it obviously isn't. But neither is it just adverts of the models like everybody claims, there is hobby stuff in there, so it can be worth a read if that week's releases are an army that you collect. The big difference is I don't bother with it when the contents are armies that don't interest me, while old WD was worth picking up anyway.

It's just boring seeing people repeat the same shit when they clearly haven't picked up a copy of the mag since it was relaunched.

In issue 111 there is ONE PAGE that is not either advertisement or meaningless rambling or rules for the new product. There are no articles, nothing like standard bearer, or a battle report. There is ONE PAGE of actual content mixed with a bit of ad.

Compared to this the December 2007 issue, the one I just happened to pick up, it has 26 pages of ads for minis or books, 1 page of art, a 20 page long battle report, a 10 page long campaign rule set, a 3 page opinion piece, ANOTHER 6 mage campaign rule set, 5 pages of a painters gallery, 26 pages of golden demon entries, an 8 page ad painting guide hybrid for the bane blade, a 6 page modelling guide for terrain, a 7 page painting guide/ad hybrid for the high elf dragon, a page of art with a short story, and 10 pages of event information. Keep in mind the ads bookend the thing, and are easily skip able rather than being the hole damn thing.

Absolutely fuckoff.

I have april 2014. 60 pages of the eavy metal imperial knights glamour shots, not a great start, 18 pages of glamour shots of some guys orks, okay step in the right direction, 50 pages of glamour shots of various minis after the fashion of the golden demon sections of old, 14 more pages of imperial knight wankery, 6 pages of blanchitsu, aka more pictures of models albeit very pretty converted ones, 16 pages of army glamour shots, oh shit more imperial knights 10 pages, OH SHIT CONTENT 4 pages of conversions and 4 pages of glamour shots of each, 18 more pages of imperial knight glamour shots, 10 pages of imperial knight painting guides, and the rest is store addresses.

I think I noticed a theme.

That's what I mean. The pages are all a picture of stormcast with half a page of that. It'snot content it's more advertisement. It's not talking about modelling or painting or gameplay or events in the lore it's just "STORMCAST COOL" which is essentially meaningless. At least warhammer visions accepts itself for what it is and just focuses on pretty pictures, hence the name.
>>
>>46033633
Free rules for a unit that are needed to use the unit are not content. Rules for a campaign, or rules for a scenario are content.

It's all well and good publishing your rules for free as you come out with models, I have no issue with that except for the balance issues it would cause if this game has balance to begin with, but putting it in your weekly magazine and then calling it content simply isn't the case. It's a necessary part of the product they are selling that happens to be there. If it were rules for a campaign of sigmarines vs undead or hell even sigmarine formations it could be called content but as it is that simply isn't the case.

Neo white dwarf however is basically just "this week's products weekly" and doesn't really have any value as anything but an ad.

in every fucking AoS thread theres someone who does this shit. Acts like they don't know what happened so they can get everyone foaming at the mouth to complain about AoS. Like 90% of these threads aren't already comprised of people stating how much they hate this game
>>

>>
>>46035921

I've had more fun playing 40k and AoS than I ever did Fantasy, Warmachine or Infinity, but on the other hand I changed groups before playing it so that might have something to do with it.

Yeah, I assume its like a 70/30 split of people to game mechanics.

I do enjoy having My Dudes and not dealing with movement trays, reforming units , pivoting, that shitty fucking magic phase ruleset and people cheating about it. Granted that cancer has infected 40k psychic phase so i'm on the fence about that as well.
>>
If you want to have good AoS threads then all you need to do it is stop responding to people who hate AoS. They will grow bored and stop posting.

no they just havent done any releases for races with horses lately

skeletal horses still exist, and the varanguard are riding demonic horse things

once they do elves, empire, bretonnia (if they avoid being squatted) then you'll see horses again

Greetings /TG/

I'm looking to start reading the 40k novels over the coming few months, and I'd like to know if there's an order that's best to read them in. I checked the lex-wiki about it but was unable to find anything relevant.

Does anyone have a list of recommended books to start with? Or an appropriate order to read the novels in to get a better understanding of how things play out?

I appreciate any and all input and reference anyone can provide.
>>
>>46037120
I would try the 40K thread for that one. I have been reading the Horus Heresy in order and it's worked well enough for me (except for the 1 in 3 books that are total duds). Haven't read much regular 40K fiction.

No.
Fans speculate low sales and old models.
Further speculation is since Vamps got better rules and more coverage when Undead split into VC and TK more people bought them which resulted in VC getting newer models and more attention, meaning GW caused TK to be less popular by neglect.

Nobody has a good answer for why very popular models like the Sphinxes that new new are being dropped though. Especially with Necron fans for conversions.

Seems GW gives no shits. Its all about the Stormcast, the rest are just there as metaphorical condiments to your Stormcast force.

>>46024021
>>46024050
Well, a bit light on the defense side, but not too shabby on the offense. Not that much of a character hunter, but pretty excellent at erasing units and cleaning up the hinterlands. Arcane Lineage is not exactly game changing, but the huge bubble means you can more often than not screw with Wizards.
>Templar
Both axe and hammer options seem fairly viable, lance seems kinda gimmicky when compared to that. Always bring a bow; even without Drakothian Guard its another straight-up Judicator shot and those are worth their weight in gold.
>Lord-Celestant
Hammer is slightly better, but not by much, surprisingly enough. If you feel like gambling a little, go with the blade and bet on Inescapable Vengance. Aslo, it's nice that the Sigmarite Thundeshield is explained here, since it was missing on the Celestant on Drakoth. Not huge, but a nice bit of fuck you, I like it.

Honestly, between the Command Ability, the bow and the Inspirational Lieutenant ability all being basically custom-made for this, I'm pretty tempted to expand my stormcast with a cavalry only army, maybe supported by a few Prosecutor units (assuming I'll ever find a use fur those knuckleheads besides collecting dust and being annoying to paint).
Something like this, maybe:
Lord-Celestant on Stardrake
Drakesworn Templar (axe & bow)
Lord-Celestant on Drakoth (tempestos hammer & shield)
4 Fulminators
4 Concussors [ugh, that name...]
3 Prosecutors (2 with hammer and shield; Prime with grandhammer)
3 Prosecutors (2 with hammer and shield; Prime with grandsword)
3 Prosecutors (2 with javelin and shield; Prime with trident and shield)
Then again, another 4 Drakothian guard are costly and the Stardrake model is very meh as of yet. Maybe if dwarfen salamader thing worked as a replacement...
>>
>>46034883
5 of those Blood Knights costs $99. I'm serious.

>>
>>46037814
Think they're squatting Brets because they think without KotR to convert people will have to buy those?

I wouldn't be shocked if they banned Black Knight conversions from counting in GW stores. Then again, in a game where you can pull from any army fielding BK doesn't matter much anymore.
>>
>>46037634
Everything is viable as long as you just take it 20 times :^)

>>46037814
20 dollars for a guy on a horse of decent quality vs 33 dollars for a guy on an over designed sort-of-horse, or 40 dollars for a guy on a normal horse but he's 40 dollars because being the only model in a box someone increases value.

And there are cheaper better blood knights out there anyhow.

Stormcast vs Chaos is Warhammer now.

All other factions are O&G. Side plots. Plot devices. Defined by which of the two main factions are in the story with them, lose importance and screentime when both are there.

Fuck, Sigmarines were in the land of the Steamhead and we didn't hear shit about them.

Orks are at least important as plot devices since any war that isn't Tyranid is them.

Everyone in Age is Eldar. Really unimportant.

Undead are Tau. Mostly unimportant, but get attention because they sell and are easy to make models for. So GW is shipteasing NagashxSigmar constantly.

They're supposed to be regular soldiers who live in and fight for Sigmaron. Theoretically not all of the wars are fought in Sigmar's name are fought with just Sigmarines, and Empire troops get their kicks in as well.

I hardly ever see them, though. Not even in places like miniwargaming. They just don't show up that much. Also I hear they and Bretonnia are getting folded together under the generic title "The Free Peoples."

Are you joking? bad wording aside this is great, perfect for a larger game without spamming the same units or needing to own multiple furnaces like the other formations

That Foetid prayer is strong as fuck..

Plague monks already get -1 rend AND generate an additional mortal wound upon 6's to wound, now you're doing straight up 2 mortal wounds for every random 6.

Censer bearers and Verminlords put out massed attacks, this solves the Verminlords many attacks but no rend problem

The plagueclaw hardly benefits, but the priest isn't supposed to. He can stand back and safely cast it and hit everyone with it's huge range.

Put it Bless with filth from the furnace onto a huge mob of 30+ Monks and now you're rerolling to hit and wound and just wrecking house. not to mention it effects everyone which i can't believe. Definitely going to use this.

sure!
This was the battle field after we deployed.
Mission was "the monolith", when I have to slowly build a monolith rolling a d6 in each of my hero phases an reach 20 when my opponent has to desercate it by reaching it with one of his unit and rolling a 4(with -2 if having half miniatures than the opponent into 3" the monolith or a +2 if having 2 times the miniatures on it).

I deployed my forces around the monolith, with exception of the left side: there i fielded a monk unit-my class cannon-ready to flank the bloodletters; when my opponent fielded the chariot so trample them i deployed my loved plaguerebarers ready to shield them.
And oh boy, they DID shielded them.

Should I continue?

First turn! Slaanesh starts and moves awufully fast. Instead of focusing on the monolith they foolishly take the bait and attack-on the left side the masque, the chariot AND the unit of seekers crash into the plaguebearers-and manages to kill only a few of them! Plaguebearers simply refuse to die. I got lucky, but doube roll save againt anything is insane. they barely scratch their opponent too-their strenght is in resilience, not attack.

On the other side the fiends of slaanesh headbutts into the blightkings, along with the second units of fiends. They hit hard and their combined attack kills 2 of them-but the counterattack is fierce, with the blightkings killing FOUR fiends and 2 wounds on a fiend!
The rest of the army footslog, aiming for the hated monument.

All of this while Nurgle got 2 turns in a row!
Rolled the second 6 while building the monolith, so now only 7 remains...with a 6 next turn Nurgle will triumph!
But lets look at the other side of the arena.

After getting a few losses the plague monks decide to FLEE EN MASS. Very skaven like. I guess some things never changes....leaving only ONE brave monk in the unit. Stand and fight? HA! he decides to flee, leaving the plaguebearers to fight. He'll see another day, maybe...or block the enemy for one turn. Who knows?

Things are getting worse for nurgle units.
To get things worse, his God refuses to listen to his chants, punishing him for using the wrong words and inflicting one mortal wpund on him.

Also
>40k

lel. 40k is bad only when facing waacs, otherwise is an extremely fun game.

The problem with 40k is the setting and the fact the main character faction looks like giant toddlers in gridiron football gear.

last turns!
on the left the chariot and the survivors slowly(fast)run toward the monolith...

This is bait, right?
Aos is the same but even more focused in the same guys(they are called sigmarines for a fucking reason)...
In 40k lore-wise the SM are nearly not enough to protect the mankind, they are deployed only when the danger is really grave and numbers alone cant do shit.

If you talk about horus heresy, thats another thing entirely...
>>
so..
is khorne still as shit as it was since 7th ed?

In the mewnahile, everyone forgot about Skiz-niz, the lonely plague monk.

I guess he'll survive another day.

(the little fella earned his name because this is the second time this shit happens. Way to go, skiz!)

How come you don't have the Glottkin. I heard they're popular with Nurgle players who play for fun. :^)

And thats how i lost.

The best part is: this was a revenge mission for another game with the same player-AND SHE FUCKING WON WITH ONE SINGLE SEEKERS THE SAME EXACT WAY-super sprint with one seeker, gets double turn, win.

Had a lot of fun anyway, game was really balanced and we used no point system-we just took turn fielding units. 10/10 would do this again.

>>46059895
Nice. Maybe keep a unit back next time to block any gaps in your line?
>>
>>46060027
My biggest mistake was not to kill the seeker with the monks, because really, i completely forgot about her.
One small mistake...
It was kinda a random finish but pretty epic, I had a lot of luck with dice rolls anyway so the game had been pretty tight.

Right now i a converting 10 savage orcs to nurgle, they will replace 10 plaguebearers to give me some anti-monster force and go more aggressive. Also ill add a plague wizard to summon the extra 'bearers when needed.
>>
>>46056392
Ah, got it. So that may be a decent list of the monsters that are safe then.
>>
>>46059599
Sigmarines are fucking terrible too.

Space Marines are terrible, and coming in small numbers in lore doesn't change that they are over half of the game.

Horus Heresy is terrible because its still the 40k setting, and 40k is terrible.

Now stop posting off-topic things about your shit game and get back to your containment threads.

no idea why but that photo scares me.
It looks like the grin of someone who just feasted on the flesh of a thousand children.
