Sword on the back is stupid
>>

he's got it upside down.
>>
>>46017395
Deadpool rocked it pretty well
>>
What about swords across the ass, ninja style?
>>
>>46017395
It depends on a lot of factors.

The single short sword across the lower back works pretty well.
>>
>>46017395
short swords are okay, and on the lower back though

standard swords, any, is fucking retarded
>>
>>46017579
>standard swords
>>
>>46018454
There are still swords with very precise regulations handed out to actual military personnel in this world. And it's not just random SEA minor states, either. Even parts of the United States do it. There were sword kills in Desert Storm.
>>
>>46018967
>There were sword kills in Desert Storm.
You know how those happen?
Pissed off Marine Corps NCOs, salty about having to buy that stupid fucking dress sword out of their own pocket, take it with them downrange and "ain't going home 'til I kill somebody with this fuckin' thing".
>>
>>46018967
you will never kill a Muslim with a sword like a crusader
>>
The issue is either that the strap for the scabbard either has to be able to move freely for the weapon to be drawn at any time or that the scabbard it's self take up only half or less of the blade length with the lower part only held my a ring of material for the weapon to be able to be drawn with ease at a moment's notice.
Even then it's a bitch to put back. And of course, the longer the blade the more effort it takes.

It's fine for carrying a big blade about for a long march, it's stupid for use in heat of the moment.

He talks about "hip" scabbards and "back" scabbards.

Mostly larger, heavy weapons were probably carried on your back and you usually had enough time to take them out but they are not made for quick drawing which is why smaller hip weapons are a thing for when you don't have time.

Notice how even when he does it, the last 3rd of the blade has to clip itself into the sheath.

I think that has more to do with it being a game and the limitations of the animation. Besides Witchers aren't normal. They are supernaturally fast and agile and train really, really hard.
>>
>>46019574
Game has some problems with swords clipping through sheaths. If you do it while running though, he sheaths it while leaning forward and it doesn't clip. Thats seems to be the method that makes the most sense.

I know the Chinese had guys carrying Dadaos on their backs in Korea, but I don't think those even had sheaths, they were just carried by a strap. It makes sense if the thing is literally to big to carry practically on your hip and you also have to carry a gun, or something.

>>
>>46019656
>Besides Witchers aren't normal. They are supernaturally fast and agile and train really, really hard.

Right so he doesn't have to worry about weight and balance as much, so they should be on his hip so he can draw them quickly.

His arm just isn't long enough to do the animation, which means he can't actually sheath the weapon while it's on his back even while messing with the sheath.

Sometimes bows were carried with a strap that resembles the ones you carry a rifle with. Modern bows, especially recurves, can be disassembled into smaller pieces, letting you fit it in a relatively small box. Otherwise, wrap in oilskin and tuck it away somewhere.
>>
>>46021632
>>46021632
I imagine he picked the name for it's significance, yes. Or better yet got it given to him by his enemies. Since Azrael is the Angel of Death and judgement in Islam, too.

Reminds me of the early days in Afghanistan. There were stories from some of the old tribesmen about a Soviet sniper they called the Blue Djinn. Blue djinni are evil djinn, according to Islamic folklore.

Yep, and lower officers fucking HATE it. It screws with promotions something terrible. The higher echelon is not about how good you are, it's about how much patronage you have and which ass you can kiss. For example, in the field, normally, a captain or higher would be commanding a unit at that rank's level. In the Pentagon, a captain makes coffee runs. If he's not screwing the Brig's daughter.

>Tribesmen are fucking commie shit up with American weapons
>Is bad day for Ivan
>Soviets start getting nasty with counterinsurgency work, torture, KGB fuckery, Putin gets a badge probably
>Send out certain blue-bereted "peacekeeping force" (Fuck you Ivan, we know he's Spetznaz) and snipers start racking up kills
>One sniper gets really, REALLY good at racking up kills. Like scary good.
>All the tribesmen hate him, obviously cursed with a devil/djinn. (Since in Islamic terms, there's no possibility that YOU fucked up, because your theology says so. Inshallah bullfuckery.)
>Soviet Sniper become "That accursed Blue Djinn"

And then the Soviets leave, leaving legends of a ridiculously good sniper just waiting to kill little Ahmed bin-Abdul if he doesn't go to bed RIGHT NOW.

>>
>>46021871
There's all kind of folksy superstition there, we used to move around the mountains quite a lot because the locals where scare shitless of them at night as there where evil spirits and dragons living in them that killed people.
Also through the day they where quite cautious about the hills around midday as there would be wicked female ghosts that would come out around that time and murder them.

Upside was no one shot at you, downside is you're carrying 80kg of shit in terrain that a goat would go 'fuck that' at walking through.

>I'll want my long sword on my back because it will be easier to draw in the press

It can't be very long if you want to be able to draw it from your back. Maybe 60-65 cm of blade if your arms resemble mine.

Of course, in the press you might not want anything much longer, but even then, drawing from your hip means you can keep your arm somewhat safe behind your shield without exposing your legs and blinding yourself in the process.

The guy behind you probably won't be very happy about the back draw either, someone bump either of you at the wrong time and he gets the tip in his face.
>>
>>46032161
If you're wielding a longsword and fighting in a shield wall you're clearly experiencing some sort of temporal anomaly.

Never mind that a swinging about a long slashing weapon in a close-quarters press is a great way to lop the man next to you's arm off as he presses in to cover you with his shield rim.

Take a one handed thrusting spear, and a long knife or hatchet.

If you're wealthy maybe spring for a Spatha.

The correct answer is "tactical withdrawal".

If you're unhorsed the only correct course of action is to either play dead or get re-horsed sharpish and flee.

Those filthy peasant Yeomen may look like funny little squishy organ bags from up on a horses back, but once you're at eye level you start to notice things like numerical advantage, and the savage expressions of satisfaction on their yucky peasant mooshes as one pulls a wriggling man at arms from the saddle with a billhook and they fall on him beating with cudgels and probing with bollock knives.

They actually are mainly killing people belonging to the ethnic christians and muslims of different philosophies. They'll just as happily kill any atheists or homosexuals they find as well.
>>
>>46034549
No, it's a fictional sword specifically made for ninja. You inventing a new meaning for it doesn't change anything.
>>
>>46034999
>Wanting an internally consistent fantasy world where retarded things do not stop being retarded because its fantasy is 'trolling'.

But thats not what you said.

Once again, what does edgycool stuff have to do with a consistent fantasy world?
>>
>>46034954
Different anon here. I'm with the consistency guy. Just because magic exists doesn't mean you have to phone everything in or handwave.
ex: how do dragons fly? Could be some serious reinforcement on otherwise hollow bones combined with a completely different type of metabolism and muscle makeup. But , heres where i'd personally call the line, you can handwave how that happened using magic. Did it evolve to take advantage of magic someway, did a mage create it, was it just the unintended fallout of some magical disaster? All of the above or non handwave away beyond this point.

The majority of people don't give one lick of a fuck about that shit.

what about (as I have hypothesized) strapping a magnet to your back thats strong enough to clamp onto a sword...it looks like it works rather well in Final Fantasy 12...

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bOt2Z3G2oDY
>>
>>46035576
Different guy just deciding to give my own opinion on stuff. When playing a fantasy setting I honestly do not care as long as some line in the sand is drawn BEFORE the setting is used?

Can the strongest human in the setting cleave a mountain in half with a butter knife with the only explanation being "he trained really hard"? Ok, I'm cool with that. As long as that is the line that has been set and it can't be crossed I'm good.
>>
>>46036707
If the magnet is strong enough to securely hold the sword, it's strong enough to make quickly getting your sword troublesome.

Electromagnets might work so you can unmag when it's go time, but then you're starting to get into complex systems.
>>
>>46036707
Depends when we're talking. A magnet that powerful back we. A sword would be useful and actually properly shaped would be immensely and prohibitively expensive. A time, such as now, having a magnet that strong on your back could absolutely fuck up your electronically equipment.
another issue would be getting the damn sword off in the first place since you'd want one strong enough to withstand day to day activities without slipping and accidentally lining the back of your calf up with the sword point or falling off entirely but still be weak enough to pull off the sword one handed which isn't going to be happening.
>>
>>46036757
I'm almost the same. I'd need something like the dm going "in this setting magic is like a law of nature like gravity. Through this he absolutely can train to cleave a mountain with a butterknife."
I guess i'm pickier than i thought comparably.

I am fairly certain rust won't actually do anything beneficial for you.
It'll rust all the way through your sword with iron oxide and then you'll be stuck with a shitty (Figuratively) rusty sword.

Sure there's nothing like infection to fuck up an opponent but I don't think rust will help you there.

>>46032620
So somewhat justified then if you're using a blade that isn't iron/steel?
So bronze or whatever.
At worst the sword will develop a patina but unlike steel or iron it won't rust all the way through.
Of course you'll still be using a bronze sword and I'm not sure what an oxide layer will do to the edge.

>>46036707
Depending on how heavy the sword is the magnet needs a certain strength, so lifting 1 to 4 Kilos or more.
The Magnet will need to be wrapped and protected because repeatedly letting something hit a magnet will most likely chip it or your sword.
You will be frequently using a drawing motion of your sword against the magnet. Your sword could become magnetized if this is done repeatedly (I think) which wouldn't be a great outcome.
If the magnet is strong enough to resist jostling it will be hard to outright pull the blade from the magnet, so you will probably need to awkwardly slide it off.
Anything touching a magnet is also magnetic if it can be attracted by a magnet. That means your sword and possible armor will interact.
A magnet is not specific, you could easily get stuck on things.

Ninjatos definitely exist, even if they were not used by actual ninjas. In my trip to Japan I asked about a decorative sword on sale in a roadside shop, and the owner told me it's called ninjato.

About as real a sword as pic related, m8
>>
>>46036908
I'm surprised /tg/ hasn't played this game. It really goes into Tolken fantasy and is fun as hell.
>>
>>46037971
It does kinda shit all over the lore though, which triggers lorefags.
>>
>>46037906
Never said it's a real sword but they are hardly fictional if theres a physical copy existing.
>>
>>46023795
Didn't work out for Hannibal in the end.
>>
>>46037667
Rust is a huge leader to lockjaw and you can absolutely oil a sword to prevent serious rust.
You might not have gotten him on the field and maybe he's a lucky SOB and survived the ensuing infection and possible amputation but someday somewhere that lockjaw he got from you a few months back will kill him or make him wish he had died.
>>
>>46037971
>It really goes into Tolken fantasy
In the same way Michael Jackson really goes into little boys, sure.
The amount of lore rape in that game is ridiculous.
Fun game, but it's clear the devs were just making shit up based off of what they'd read on some wikis.
>>
>>46038267
>lockjaw
Just say fucking tetanus instead of trying to sound poetic you pretentious twat.
>>
>>46020032
Every military since mankind started having wars has had tons of nepotism.
>>
>>46038045
This. I was told it was a great game so i went out and got it. Then i played it and was dissapointed entirely seeing as it tears the lore a new one and is really just brutal tier murderporn and kewlparkour. Then the same person i was recommended to by and who i've always trusted on these things just tells me not to think about the lore even though thats almost the entire story and dialogue.
>>
>>46038229
Well I guess Frostmourne isn't a fictional sword then.
>>
>>46038269
I'm tempted to play this game again so please explain to me how it does.

Mind you I have minimal lore knowledge.
>>
>>46038385
Short version by someone who knows fuckall about LotR lore:

You are a guy that is possessed by the ghost of the elf guy that Sauron tricked into helping forge the one ring. You go on a murder rampage across mordor because reasons, and kill some high level officer type guys that I'm not sure existed prior to this game.
Then, during the ending, elf ghost guy is all "perhaps it's time to forge a new ring"
>>
>>46037971
>>46038269

>Ay mang let's forge an even more powerfuler one ring

Fun game but the plot was stupid.

It felt more like the LOTR than the Hobbit though so that was good.
>>
>>46037348
Huge weapons like that are ceremonial, both Europe and Japan had the same basic tradition of forging ridiculously oversized weapons for symbolic purposes, bragging rights, and looking really cool in parades.
>>
>>46038479
That one ringwraith fight in whichever of the hobbit movies made me go 'damn this feels like shadows of mordor'
>>
>>46038444
I read literally everything in game game.

Basically you go out of your way to kill the guys who killed your family while also finding artifacts that increase your power and your wraith's knowledge of who he is.

Start off small, work your way up. Halfway through the game, you learn how to control so know you can either take control of the Urek's (better then orks) officer's or kill them and replace them with your own. It's a neat system actually.

As for the new Ring... Well...That was an extremely open ended ending. He could mean he wants to forge a new Ring of Power or he wanted the one ring for himself so he could control the others.

Its actually called lockjaw where i live. We also call anything carbonated pop and say der for deer and insist people on the east side of the river sound funny not us and our football team is better than they and are in fact so good that the eastern state had to copy us but change their color to green.
>>
>>46038622
As long as you pronounce the letter H as 'haiche', it's all good with me.
>>
>>46038650
Haiche, chree, ruff, oh yaaaw
>>
>>46038300
It's folk terminology, not scientific, but particularly refers to tetanus affecting the jaw.

Also, you are rude, I would not have you at my table.
>>
>>46038267
Rust only increases tetanus risk because of the surface area increase providing a larger habitat for the spores to sit on.
So your sword will need to be pretty rusted in addition to having been exposed to the relevant bacterial spores in the soil for rust to have any effect on tetanus risk(Probably done by your pit in any case so if your sword isn't already a prime disease vector by that point you might as well give up).

And really once a sword rusts it just rust more and more easily because of the aforementioned surface area getting larger so it oxidizes better.
I'm not even that certain regular oiling will help that much.
Your sword also won't slide particularly smoothly in your scabbard with its irregular surface structure.
>>
>>46038229
You do realize how weak your argument is, right?

Ninjato are not real. There are no real ninjas left in this world. Only people who train ninjutsu are people like the practitioners of Tenshinsho-den Katori Shinto Ryu, a real old school of martial arts that can prove with checked book keeping that what they teach is what has been taught for hundreds of years. Nowhere in koryu schools is a lick of mention about ninjato. Just because charlatans like Masaaki Hatsumi spin tales to sell stuff to impressionable ninja lovers doesn't mean that ninjato is real or ever has been real.
>>
>>46038300
Lockjaw and tetanus are not (always) the same thing. Lockjaw is a symptom not the disease. For example rabies also causes lockjaw.
>>
Real medieval weapon and armor and strategy shit is boring. Fantasy exists to make it actually interesting and cool.
>>
>>46040682
Where i live lockjaw is synonymous with tetanus. We just use old words and shit cause we the last holdout of 60-70's style midwesternery.
>>
>>46032332
>>46033426

I should clarify: shield wall like the Danish Vikings in 800-900 CE, not like Sparta or Rome.
>>
>>46041662
To be fair it pretty much means that where I am too, if I heard someone had lockjaw I would assume tetanus, but just saying, it can be other things too.
