In your personal opinion, is this sword too big?
>>
Depends on the level of realism you're going for. It would absolutely be too large in a 100% realistic medieval setting, but in most settings where people are capable of borderline superhuman feats, it's fine.
>>
>>46014947
Depends on the setting.
>>
there is never too big a sword.
it is only to big when you can not use it.
>>
depends entirely on if the wielder has above base human strength
>>
Depends on how tall that person is.

If he is like four feet tall, then you are looking at a six foot claymore that is a bit too thick to be a proper weapon because of weight issues.

If he is six foot tall? Yup, that sword is too big.

To be fair, if you train yourself to the point you can effectively use that weapon with speed and precision of any sort, then you have a nasty fighter on your hands, but odds are low you can do so with any kind of real chance to develop skills with it.

I'm thinking to myself, "could the absolute strongest baseline human who ever lived swing this thing around effectively?"

Just a normal guy who lifts constantly and has some fortunate genetics.

>>46015541
and the answer would be no.

the important thing is, that the average human, swinging a normal sized sword around would be more effective.

because bigger does not make it better. energy = Mass x Velocity Squared.

a lighter weapon moving faster, has more energy than a huge, heavy one, going slowly.

which unfortunately, game designers do not understand.
>>
>>46015701
Weren't IRL zweihanders pretty much Top Sword despite being fuckoff huge?

4 1/2 to 7 pounds, up to 6 feet long.
>>
And then there's this guy.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pier_Gerlofs_Donia#Superhuman_strength_and_size
>>
>>46014947
If you want to be super realistic, depending on the mass of the sword, even with superhuman strength it could be unusable, simply because of center of the mass (of person + sword) being "too far from body". In other words weight of the sword would cause torque and make wielder fall. Gravity doesn't give a fuck about your STR, you want a huge weapon, you have to be huge.
>>
>>46015881
They were not THAT heavy tho. You could swing them fast enough to hurt
>>
>>46014947
Bit too long and way too thick for a sword of that side. The crossguard is also too much material for two-handed blade.

But you need to consider that this weapon is used by giants, so a version for humans would probably be alright.
>>
>>46015881
Ayupp. The only problem with OP's sword is that the proportions for an espada or other huge two handed sword are off. It looks both too thick and too wide. It looks more like a scaled up longsword than a zweihander.

Of course it's also made for scaled up super-humans so it makes some sense...

Obligatory "zweihanders are actually the modern term"
>>
>>46015881
Weren't those fairly niche though?
>>
>>46016135
We had to come up with all these modern terms for swords because at the time people just called them "currently the best sword we know how to make."
>>
>>46016215
No, they just called them swords.

Except for some smug Germans that called some knifes because they needed them to cut the bread in the tavern and totally not to murder their neighbor for damaging their fence.
>>
>>46016297
I mean, a sword really is just a scaled-up knife. You can see how that'd work out in language.

It's not that they don't understand, it's that they don't fucking care. Physics take a backseat to things like game balance for the sake of making a fun game.
>>
>>46016543
It's fine unless you're intentionally trying to make something realistic. Which is why there aren't any anime swords in chivalry or mountain blade.

How big are greatswords supposed to be in D&D, anyway? I've never heard of anyone complain that they're too anime.
>>

Because large and medium sized weapons are different categories. A longsword is about 4-5 feet long.

Can't be certain without numbers. There are also limits on how quickly something can be swung, which is based on human anatomy (muscle contraction rates, bone lengths, etc.)

>>46016353
This is actually wrong. The materials, construction methods, and shape of knives are all normally different than swords in addition to the obvious differences in size, weight, and function.
>>
>>46018371
It's dark souls 2, thought in-universe that's supposed to be a DSI black knight sword with new fittings.
>>
>>46016382
Ignoring how stupid the swords look and judging primarily on length from guard to tip of blade (rather than measuring from the pommel, as some of these have absurdly long hilts), I'd say that 4 is the peak sword she could use efficiently. Maybe 5 (though only if it were straight). 6 would be less than ideal, but assuming some degree of half-swording was frequent, it could be usable (again, assuming we're just going by length from quillons to point, and not going by shape, otherwise a blade that shape would need to be significantly shorter for her to use). 7 is garbage. If somebody tried to use that in a game, I would penalize the fuck out them (after, you know, warning them that I would penalize the fuck out of them ahead of time).

The Spanish definitely used the Montante for dueling and such, but it is literally mentioned in manuals and such that it is a "weapon that can face many and succeed," so it seems like it was meant for big battles, particularly for defending officers and flags.

There's also a fechtbuch that depicts quite spectacularly a guy with a sword standing over a literal pile of spearheads, suggesting that they had some method to strike polearms repeatedly in a defense posture, causing them to eventually break. The idea of them just being used to lop off spearheads left and right, though, is pretty ridiculous, nobody is strong enough to do that.

>>
>>46022691
Then you should have just said "I don't like paddles and unrealistic weapons."

I myself have the superior taste of recognizing that unrealistic weapons expand the potential options and designs available for imaginative designers to explore, and that they can easily find their place in a wide variety of styles. They might not fit in every game, but that's hardly a reason to try and dismiss people who actively use their imagination and explore the question of "what kind of weapons would extremely strong people use?" or "What would a weapon designed by a magical artisan look like?" or simply "How awesome would a sword that's really, really big be?"

I actually knew this really scrawny looking guy who practiced sword fighting techniques with a 18' long, 4" diameter piece of PVC pipe. Close enough to full speed, too. He also would go through forms while dual-wielding claymores.

So he probably could use a sword that size effectively.

But even still, he'd probably be more effective in an actual fight if he was just using one of the larger real-world swords, like a zweinhander or something.

Shitty stat scaling but otherwise solid base stats and augmentable. good for mid range build.

What you just posted looks like it really do some damage. The big anvil things look like they could only do damage if you dropped them out of a plane. Well, they really would hurt there, but that's not really how we assume they should be used.

depends on the setting.

That's practically swinging a staff around. You might as well leave the hammer bit off at that point.

War hammers on poles were for fighting mounted knights mostly.

FUCKING VANGUARDS REEEEEEEEEE

If I'm remembering correctly, the method wasn't to lop off the spearheads in midair, but to chop down, biting into the wood, driving the point into the ground at which point it would snap.

I could be wrong though. I don't remember where I learned that so I could just be making it up.

It's for fighting armored opponents. The hammer head is hard and heavy enough to strike and deform plate armor, injuring and hindering the occupant.

Against a fleshy target you'd be better served with a sword or spear.

it is but also you obtain that sword from a 3 meters tall knight, while you are an undead.

The standard claw hammer weighs about what a warhammer would weigh. Except a warhammer would have a longer handle and a smaller profile.

My favourite blunt weapon though would be the gepinde staf, better known as the Goedendag. Because any weapon that is a combination of club and spear is a win in my books.

It would be even better if that weapon was actually usable in the game and not just used on the sprites of NPCs
