I'm going to be buying my little brother his dream deck for Modern, Grishoalbrand. I need advice on which list I should use to buy for him.
I'm stuck between the Grixis Grishoalbrand(doesn't run flip Jace), Grixis Reanimator(runs flip Jace and Emrakul), and RB Grishoalbrand(gets to run Blood moon and drop it on turn 1/2).

The best cards with it are honestly Boros Charm and Lightning Helix. The former means it can protect itself and gives you massive reach, the latter stabilizes like a beast. And those cards are already good on their own.
Remand is another option that could be pretty delicious in some circumstances, but it's so much worse than Orims Chant it's not even funny.
I just got back into magic (left when Mirrodin showed up) and since none of the MTG threads are general enough I'll just ask this here.
How do you actually keep a planeswalker alive? The cost of defending him seems prohibitive unless the planeswalker is critical to your everything.
I've been using Ob Nixilis Reignited and he's only survived to my next upkeep in non-casual play once, and that was a match where the opponent simply could not attack me or he'd die the next turn from lack of blockers.

Planeswalkers have to pass the Jace Test, they need to provide value on the turn they're played. There's good reason why the only ones that see play in modern are Tarn, Ugin and Lily. In standard, it's loli lili and flip jace. In legacy and vintage, you have tezzeret and Super OG Jace
They're mainly used for durdling in EDH beside that.

Black Core > Blue Core > White Core
Black Core are 50% good (depends on the batch, the card etc.) some may pass as real in a sleeve accross a table, some may not even fool Ray Charles.
Blue Core are just above what you'll get if you printed the card yourself with your ink printer. Good for cheap cubes with old expensive cards.
White core are garbage, you'll be better taking a sharpie and wiriting on a land the name of the card you want

Of course it doesn't, but in order for a control deck to have success in large formats like this, it cant play traditional control. It needs either some kind of lock(blood moon+sometimes seas/stone rain, countertop), or ways to cheat mana costs of powerful cards while also having ways to get card advantage/virtual card advantage(top+miracles in legacy, Shardless in legacy, moxes and lotus for Vintage PW control).
That's what control in formats what large card pools looks like, and that's why people will eventually realize Blue Moon is the only way to win with control consistently. The deck can even handle people searching out multiple basics if built properly.

No chalice in my lgs (or Eldrazi for that matter) and I've beaten leylines the three times i have gone against it. My damage doesn't target and lilis and necrogen mists (sideboard) don't target c:. Only two guys with leylines in my lgs this guy with amulet bloom (rip) and soul sisters guy. They don't go often, I've gotten lucky the times I've gone against it. I've put three dispels in my sideboard, hoping to shore up my game against the counter heavy decks that give rally a headache. Also I'm debating splashing in the Iona/Unburial/Gifts combo as an alternate wincon, although I'm worried about it diluting the deck down too much.

Whether the cards are strong performers in modern, is an entirely different discussion.

I'm running a similar deck, and it's pretty sweet. Not that there's a lot of them around, but don't your builds fold to anything with countermagic? I've been running Tidehollow Sculler as a 4-of, and it works quite well. Some games you combo, but occasionally you'll also get games where you Viscera Seer into Sculler, sac with ability on the stack, do it again turn 3, then return both and sac them again, so by the time your opponent gets a turn 3, they're already stripped of cards. It gives the deck another dimension and some much needed interaction.
