Exactly. When I was saying 'elite, highly trained' I was being entirely sarcastic.
IIRC there's a screencap of the manga where a US Special Forces squad gets into a firefight with the Japanese (fuck if I know why), and the American operatives are saying that they "can't even touch these guys" because the Japanese train like, a million times harder, guys.

Hilariously bad. The anime is basically japan doing a 2 season long victory lap around middle earth while every other country looks on in awe and butthurt at how amazing japan is.
I greatly enjoy it, but everything everyone is saying is 100% true and valid, I just love it for those stupid pants on head reasons.

Oh, I know. This is also the same portion where they know it's the United States because there's a black guy and only the United States has black people.
>>45992781
Why because the used guns? I mean fuck feudal Japan valued the bow and arrow more then swords anyway, they were only romanticized after the end of the feudal age
>>45993283
I don't get why it needs to be a part of it
the clash between medieval fantasy and modern day military is in theory something that could gather enough plot, drama and character development from its very concept without ever needing to branch out even if its established early on the military capacities of one side are vastly superior to the other one's
haven't watched or read or know anything about it but I'd imagine with the fantasy side losing every battle they'd be driven to make deals with their equivalent of demonic entities, resort to forbidden magic, appeal to gods etc which various characters can then respond to

have the military cut off and isolated, forced to rely on their own supplies (or a pittance of a supply line from back home) while being both vastly outnumbered and having to deal with the destructive potential of enemy battlemages.
But nope. Too good of a narrative for Manga writers to manage, let's make it all about how amazing we are at everything we do all the time.

>>45993437
I feel like mortal kombat 9 and 10 showed this beer with out world and the nether realm invaded earth realm and the human military had to fucking deal with it in the background
>>45993437
conflict on the earth side over matters such as resource control in the new world and maybe even moral implications would also be logical, but there's better uses for that than to fuel nationalism, such as say having the fantasy side exploit the shit out of it setting them up against eachother, maybe even giving them access to dangerous magics to try to either get them to wipe eachother out or else get close enough to them to copy some modern day technology
and if the fantasy side does get the upper hand, eventually there is room for a very powerful moment where modern day side unleashes a nuclear weapon
>>45987118
I think a better name would be "Favoured Enemy: Commoners"

>The sound of barbaros onomatopoetically evokes the image of babbling (a person speaking a non-Greek language)
>The Greeks used the term barbarian for all non-Greek-speaking peoples, including the Egyptians, Persians, Medes, and Phoenicians, emphasisising their otherness
>The Romans used the term barbarus for uncivilised people, opposite to Greek or Roman, and in fact, it became a common term to refer to all foreigners among Romans after Augustus age (as, among the Greeks, after the Persian wars, the Persians), including the Germanic peoples, Persians, Cauls, Phoenicians and Carthaginians
>The Greek term barbaros was the etymological source for many words meaning "barbarian", including English barbarian
>>45999958
I don't think you know what a catamite is, and none of those are slurs. They are English words that mean:
>Someone not from my country.
>Someone from another country who now lives in my country.
>Someone from another country who now lives in my country without my government's knowledge or consent.
>Someone or something not from where I'm from.
>>46000073
What they literally mean isn't a factor in whether or not they're slurs, you beanbag.
"immigrant" isn't said with any tone less hostile than "30% sneer" anymore. It's a slur.
>>46000073
>I don't think you know what a catamite is

>none of those are slurs
Depends on who says them and who's listening.
>>46000121
Not the person that you're replying to, but I would not go as far as to call it a slur. The majority of its modern usage is pejorative, for sure, out of politeness or neutrality you would want to use a different word, but the words themselves aren't offensive in a vacuum.

>>45987808
Not even going to lie, i'd love to make a character like this. Just some mildly grumpy middle aged Ranger or Fighter who went through the setting's equivalent of 'nam and came out a different man entirely. Not just because of the hellish training he went through, not because of the sleepless terror filled nights filled with the sounds of fae moving through the forest unseen, not even because the drow that caught him and his comrades and tortured them to the point that many of them chose to bite through their tongues and drown in their blood rather than face another day of torture. No, the thing that keeps him up at night now is that he can never find the right goddamned poisonous mushrooms for his spider and rat's eye stew. During cave and dungeon crawls the party would have to either keep the cleric or alchemist by his side at all times or have him on a short rope tied to the heaviest party member just to make sure he didn't go jamming every mushroom in sight into his maw and die in his pursuit of the right one.

What about defense though. A gun would get pretty well wrecked if you shot it, but a sword would be more or less fine. It might chip or deform a bit, but otherwise will remain fully functional.
I say sword with gun would be too resistant to damage, while also having the stability to wield it's gun with precision. The gun would be easily destroyed because of it's fine mechanical parts, while also suffering from it's own recoil, since it has nothing to brace against, it would probably fling itself across the room were it to fire.

Except they're not taking over the world. Unless they develop anti-getting-fucking-nuked-from-three-directions magic fast, they can't invade anyone. Thats the whole reason the cold war was cold; anyone looking to start a conventional war would be nuked brfore they could finish it. The best they could manage is an economic monopoly on knowledge and wizards. That's still valuable, but when every superpower is waiting to fuck you up and steal that plot of land, you can't leverage economy.
The only possible thing that might hold them off is godmoding for a stupid advantage (which is the nationalist shit), or threatening to close the gate if it's attacked.
>>45992220
For manga, you generally only have like 50 pages for your first chapter, in which you have to set up your setting as well as your characters if it isn't just some regular old, non-magical high school. You have to get enough information through to your readers, for that first chapter to make sense and draw readers in for the next chapter, so some expository infodumping is kind of necessary.
But that particular manga is a bland, uninspired, mediocre affair. So you also aren't entirely wrong.
