My thoughts are that people usually implement ideas like this terribly and with very little thought other than how cool their idea is. No sexual dimorphism would lead to HUGE social differences between that species and a species like humans, who's very small (compared to most animals) sexual dimorphism has shaped our entire evolutionary history.
What's the point of being a two-sex species if they're both the same except for genitals? It seems like a dumb evolutionary trait compared to a hermaphroditic or sex-changing species.
If the male of the species isn't bigger or stronger than the females, you'll end up with a society where the male is only really useful as an impregnator, meaning a whole tribe of women with a few males, since that's how you maximise the societies reproduction rate with the least amount of useless mouths to feed.
If men aren't bigger and stronger they're just women who can't have babies, as long as you have enough of them to keep the population up.

That's the only part that makes the "only a few precious males" model a problem. If you have a lot of disposable males then sure, you don't need many to keep the generations coming and if you lose a few (or even way more than a few) no one gives a single shit. Greater pools of disposable males also promotes greater gene variation and can lead to higher adaptation flexibility across generations.
However, if you are in a highly contested setting and you only have a male population of 5% or maybe even less, and plenty of females to go around so that some can stay behind and be serial breeders while the others go off to war, that works out pretty damn good Until one of the other races finds out where you're keeping your men.
The species can absorb some losses, but past a certain point every male lost is a huge blow to survival. Wipe out 5% of the species, wipe out the entire species in one generation. That's a pretty big liability. How close would the male:female ratio have to be to guard against this possibility? 1:4? 1:2? Has to be high enough that it's not your Achilles Heel.

If you are going to make a race more or less sexually dimorphic than humans you should try to imagine possible implications. If the men are as big as space marines and the females are between 4.5 feet and 5.5 feet you might want to avoid any direct contact between the party and females as they are so coddled. I guess that kind of depends on how you define "minimal". We're close enough that even we sometimes find it hard to tell the difference. I won't list a bunch of animals with obvious dimorphism (because I don't really have a measuring stick for what "minimal" means in this conversation), but I'd definitely argue that we exhibit it a lot less than a good part of the rest of the animal kingdom.
For example's sake, there are plenty of animals out there with drastic color changes (peacocks come to mind, although this is hardly unique to them--or even to birds), drastic size differences (humans of a certain gender certainly don't double or triple the size of the other sex), and even pretty major outward physiological differences (horns--or the lack of them--being a pretty common one). Compared to all that, I'm pretty comfortable using the word "minimal".
