Can we have a book recommendation thread? To keep it /TG/ related I figure it could be for books that will inspire good roleplay campaigns.

I want a new fantasy series to read but I don't know if what I'm looking for exists. I really enjoy the Xanth series and have been looking for something like it because I like the following two things:

A diverse world. Xanth has a mix of every mythological, fantasy, etc creature even some hybrids that have not been used that much before. Centaurs, brass people, rocs, mermaids, Naga, ogres, nymphs, demons, etc. I like that each new story has interesting magical creatures often with their own little culture and abilities.

A light-hearted atmosphere. Most Xanth stories don't feel too stressful even if some of them have end of the world scenarios. Generally they're just easygoing quests that feel like seeing a fantasy world in a travel show. I enjoy having something comfy to read and Xanth is so easy to read with stories that are very digestible (besides some of the author's perversions but I'm good at ignoring that).

If I find a series that is light then it's usually just a Tolkien copy world without a lot of other fantasy elements or creatures.

If I find a series with a world full of strange creatures and elements it is usually some sort of dramatic tale about vanquishing evil.

So if anyone has a suggestion I'd appreciate it. I know lit is technically the proper place but I don't think this thread will have the right audience there and I figure people can still use this to discuss book worlds that were good in inspiring games they played.

Do you also like child porn or what

I get it bait.jpg but I'd really like something light in a fantasy setting with lots of monsters and magic that isn't just another world with elves dwarves and orcs and a big bad evil at the end to defeat.

Just a dude or a few people traveling around a unmapped land having adventures would be nice.

Thanks it looks like the kind of thing I'm looking for.

Its like I wish it was more of a popular subgenre. When I look through the fantasy section at a bookstore it's all dour elves and dwarves usually in the middle of some battle when what really I enjoy reading about more is fun adventures (the kind I like to have with my DND group).

There was a DND comic series recently that kind of captured this.

Looking him up "to find and wake the dreamer" sounds like an interesting concept.

What do you suggest to start with his books?

Since you like piers anthony, have you read his apprentice adept series? That might fit your needs. It's set in two worlds, one of science and the other of magic. The first book name is "Split Infinity"

I've liked what I've read of it. For some reason I always get my hands on the first book and nearly get to the end and then have to return it to the library or lose it or some other thing happens.

I'll definitely read that series eventually though I hope.

I don't suppose you or someone else knows if they're available digitally? I checked Amazon and the Google store and can't find a digital version. I'll get a physical one if I have to but I enjoy adding things to my digital library.

Xanth is a case of a cool setting ruined by a DM who is DEFINITELY That Guy.

The idea that the source of magic is that in his dread house at the Jail space great Cthulhu lies waiting either to roll double sixes or for someone to post bail? Excellent!

Unfortunately the DM has Opinions about wimmin, girls, and fuckin' that become weirder and harder to ignore as time goes on.

I totally agree. Everything about the setting of Xanth I love, the magical races, the talents, the weird flora/fauna and even how the landscape changes via its connection to our world over the years.

Someday maybe someone can make condensed better edited versions of his stories without the creepy stuff.

What's creepy about the books? I never read them but the setting seems cool.

A dude once said 'over time, an author becomes a more and more iconic version of himself, for good and for bad'.
(The man who said this? Orson Scott Card, proving his own point.)
Piers Anthony is very much this. I mean, the Xanth series is more than thirty books, written since the 70s. The early stuff is really good - I consider the first ten to be pretty damn solid - but as things go on, as we move into the next generation (and beyond) of characters, stuff drifts around.
And, yeah, he has his 'perspective'. The maturity level in Xanth is often close to a ten year-old trying to sneak a glance up girls' skirts, someone once said. I stopped reading at some point, but I've heard that things get weirder and weirder over time. (I've also heard that they normaled out again once he realized that his grandkids would read them, but I wouldn't know either way.)
Of course, this is the internet, where we need to have our boogeymen, and prove how superior we are to every writer we talk about, so of course this is talked up to such an extreme that I have difficulty believing it.
