That is a problem because..?

It's not until that guy bitches and moans that he 'only wants to play X'
>>
What's wrong with wanting to retain variety? Although it does depend on the system, and how focused its classes are.

In D&D, especially 4e, having a good balance is important, although in 4e's favour it does give you a huge variety of ways to fill each role (ignoring the 'They all play the same' bullshit)

On the other hand, a system like Legends of the Wulin, with its broad archetypes, makes playing a game with a single 'class' party a non-issue. A group of Warriors, Courtiers, Priests, Doctors or Scholars can have interesting synergy, giving up the flexibility for a greater focus on a certain kind of effect.

It might be a problem if they make a fuss over another player wanting to play the class they're already playing, but other than that it sounds like not much of a problem.

Back in the day, every party had a dozen fighting men, because magic users and hobbits were for pussies, and we liked it that way!

Tell him "first come, first served."

And if he doesn't like it, kick him in the balls
>>
Yeah, he's not wrong in doing that. Last game something similar happened and we ended up with 2 wizards, a bard, and 2 sorcerers. They died at level 2 due to running out of spell slots from a earlier encounter and finding a single weakened wight in a adjacent building.

>Not allowing the spell-slotless party to combine their powers in desperation so the Bard can sing a scorching solo backed by their magical might to save the day by manifesting instruments of raw mana so they can nuke the foe and then run screaming to recover and learn from the near-defeat

sounds like another creatively dead stillborn game
>>
You usually tell each other what class you are going to play?
In my group we always keep class/race secret until people find out, is rather fun.

>In my group we always keep class/race secret until people find out, is rather fun.
I can see this being fun if you play a lot of one-shots or shorter campaigns, but if we're going to be settling down for the long haul I want to make sure there's synergy within the group.

This sounds terrible.

Yeah, pretty sure you deserve your head twisted off by a Terminator knockoff

Yeah, pretty sure you deserve everything that has happened to you in real life.
>>
>>45719647
There is a legitimate point to spreading out roles, so as to not make people feel overshadowed or that they have to compete with another player.
Obviously this is not always gonna be the case, but as a DM i always try to be mindful of stuff like that because i want everyone to have a good time.

And they didn't come up with an insane, barely feasible, scooby-doo-esque plan to kill or incapacitate it using the surrounding terrain?

but its EPIC AND METAL
>>
>>45719647
That's a problem? Keeping a party varied is both fun and smart. Case in point: I like playing fighters. Say what you will, but I enjoy being a marital tactician that has the background to justify planning and supplying a force from the size of an adventuring party, to a whole army if need be. A real professional. Its why I've always said that a fighter that dumps intelligence shouldn't live past level 2, if he's lucky.

Party has a Fighter already? Dammit. Fine. I'll play something else, but I am /not/ being the Cleric AGAIN.

And now we have Pathfinder with it's Archetypes and 5e with it's class paths, and I am content. Already have a fighter, but she's going Eldrich Knight? Awesome, I wanted to play a Basttlemaster. We good? Perfect.

Sure I'll change things up, the only things I genuinely dislike playing are full casters, but I can role with pretty much anything.
>>
>>45724721
This desu senpai. I personally love fitting whatever tactical niche the party lacks. I'll always ask or look for whats not being g supplied by someone else yet, be it a skill monkey or a support or a tank or w/e.

In shadowrun we had one player that wanted to be a dedicated sniper and stealth expert. The social expert player complained because he wanted to have a sniper rifle too. No one denied him having a sniper rifle but he would not have one unless no one else did. We resolved it by telling him to shut up or don't play. Did not hear anymore about it.

I'm having to deal with this problem right now. New guy that joined my game made a ranger, and the group's old ranger now wants to change his classe. I told him that it's ok because the new ranger is a pirate and a crossbow specialist, while the old ranger is more of a tribal hunter, but he's saying he doesn't like to play repeated classes. I don't care about having the repeated classes on the group, but apparently some people do. I'm about to tell the old ranger to change his class if he wants, but I really don't see the problem here.

Is this what you do everytime your players make bad decisions?

I guess I'm kinda guilty of this. I like to have a well rounded group, and so I let everyone else pick first then I decide.
>>
>>45719647
Me, I don't like to step on others neither like when others step on me, unless the same class can cover completely different fields I'll try to not be of the same class as others in my group.

He has to dump something though, it's either Int or Cha, and my GM hates when you dump Cha, but has no problem when you dump Str, odd.
