Every rule, naturally, has an exception. But the larger portion of people who get in only write 1-2 sentences up to a paragraph.
Think of it this way:
Job posters are more likely to hire the guy who comes dressed in a suit. Even if its for safeway or target. A way, way higher rate of hire.
But then there are always those guys who show up to the interview in a Hawaiian T-shirt and shorts and they still get accepted.
