Become The Vampire 41

You walk towards Meliora with a smile on your face, and you wave at her.

“Hey there. You look pretty cute in that outfit, did you pick that out yourself?”

Meliora turns towards you, cheeks immediately turning the same pink at her outfit.

“Athena picked it out. She said it would... look nice...”

She manages to catch herself before she crashes, and huffs, turning away and hiding her face behind her hood.

“You need to stop doing that.”

You chuckle a bit.

“What, complimenting you?”

Meliora shoots you a glare.

“Saying things that you know are going to throw me off. Jerk.”

Same system as Become The Dragon Quest. If you don't know what that is, it's best of three d20 rolls. I name a stat that sums up what you're trying to do, and if I don't name a relevant skill, you try to fill in the blank based on what you're trying to accomplish. “Break open the door” might be Strength based, but if you've been playing baseball after school and there's a lead pipe nearby, you could apply your Baseball skill to the roll. A 20 on the die is a crit threat, and if either of the other two rolls is 20 or higher after mods, it's a critical. A crit fail is when you have two or more 1s. So far this system has worked out well enough. We'll get into combat rules as needed, but in basic terms you have wounds, not HP, and the worse the wounds, the more penalties you accrue while doing other things.

Most Important Rule:
Have fun.

“I'm just being honest. If you'd prefer than I can lie to you, that's fine.”

Meliora grumbles a bit and points a finger at you, hood falling back.

“Why did you bring me here? What's your scheme? Are you planning some kind of... of... dating ritual? I won't fall for your plot.”

You point at the arcade.

“To play video games together. To have fun and enjoy each other's company, and hang out. Come on, let's play some games.”

You head into the arcade, with Meliora following behind you, hands shoved into her pockets. You glance at the fighting games for a moment, debating if you want your ass handed to you again, and briefly consider a shooter. The arcade isn't super busy at the moment, so most of the games are free or have short lines, but from the looks of things the...

You take a moment to look at the longest line in the room, and then at what it leads to. People are lining up for some sort of roller coaster or amusement park ride, and when you listen closely you can hear a dull rumble beneath your feet behind the music and the sounds from the arcade machines.

You lead Meliora over to a shooter and smile a bit, grabbing one of the pistols.

“Wanna play for a bit, see how far we can get?”

Meliora pauses, looking at the controller, and then at you.

“This is going to be a walk in the park.”

You nod and take aim, putting a few coins into the machine and hitting the start button for both sides.

“Prove it then.”

Meliora grabs the pistol as the game begins, taking a moment to get used to the aim.

“If you insist.”

You breeze through the first few levels, struggling only a little towards the end when the final boss uses his extremely cheap unavoidable attack a few times in a row, but right as you're getting ready to get our some more quarters for extra lives, Meliora's eyes glow and her finger becomes a blur, pumping the boss full of bullets as quickly as the game can read her inputs. She sets the controller down and turns to you.

“That was fun for a warm-up. So now what?”

You gesture to Back-Alley Brawler 4.

“Fight?”

Meliora nods.

“Fight.”

She walks over to the machine and inspects it for a moment.

“Hold on a second.”

She pulls a scalpel from her pocket and runs it around the base of one of the control sticks, scrapping away some sort of gunk.

“Someone gummed up one of the controls. I hate cheaters like that... They can't win properly so they just use sneaky tactics...”

You take the other set of controls and wait for Meliora to pay for the match, and before long you're engaged in a heated battle. Your reactions are on point, but you can't read the flow of the fight very well, and after chipping you down to a fraction of your health Meliora just grinds you down with light attacks, taunting as the timer runs out. She turns to you and folds her arms, smiling.

“Loser covers the next match but picks the contest. So, what'll it be next?”

You glance over at the dance game machines, then back at her.

“Quick question. Do you always carry a scalpel around with you?”

You chuckle a bit, but Meliora just quirks an eyebrow at your question.

“No. I found it on the ground while I was waiting for you at the arcade. I guess someone dropped it. I'm not really sure where it came from.”

You shrug a little bit and head for the dance machines.

“Weird. Anyway, I bet you can't dance in that skirt, so I challenge you to a dance off.”

Meliora flinches.

“That... Oliver, no.”

She shakes her head.

“I'm not doing that. No way. If my dad saw me... Do you realize what would happen? He's been trying to get me to play that kind of game for ages with him. I can't.”

You jingle the coins in your pocket.

“So that's a forfeit then? Didn't even need to spend my money.”

Meliora sighs and follows you over to the machine, glancing around nervously and pulling up her hood.

“Just one round. That's it.”

You grin and slam the quarters into the machine before stepping onto the dance pad, and Meliora moves beside you. After a moment's pause to consider the best possible option, you pick the song that'll distract Meliora the most, the most wannabe Japanese pop song on the track list. As it starts Meliora shoots you a death glare, and the match begins.

To call it close would be an understatement. The game goes back and forth, with Meliora trying to recognize the patterns to predict where to move and you just going with the flow. As the rhythm changes the score sways back and forth, but you manage to edge her out by a few points in the end. Meliora hops off the pad and pouts.

“Rematch on the fighting game. Now.”

No thanks, I'd rather keep our internal organs safely in place.
>>
“We need a proper tiebreaker now. Maybe a round of air hockey or something?”

Meliora glances at the air hockey table for a few seconds and shrugs.

“Good enough for me.”

You head for the machine and get ready to play when you catch a glimpse of someone by the door. There's something strange about their appearance, but you can't quite put your finger on it. It might be the strange coat that they're wearing, some sort of trench coat with rounded shoulders, like they're concealing something under it. It might be their expression, looking around for the room with a soft smile that doesn't reach their eyes. Something about them strikes you as out of place, particularly when their eyes fall on Meliora and, for just an instant, their expression changes to... disgust?

You set down the puck and turn to Meliora.

“There's a guy by the door. Don't be obvious about looking, but do you recognize him?”

Meliora's eyes glow briefly and she shivers.

“My father's rival... The guy that's trying to get him fired so he can teach science at the school... The last time I saw him he called me an 'over-designed sexbot'. I hate that guy...”

You nod slightly.

“Is he dangerous?”

Meliora shakes her head.

“He wants to be a teacher, he'd never do anything overt. But that hasn't stopped him from trying all kinds of subtle ploys. My father specializes in machines, he specializes in biology and genetic augmentation, and when you can just inject someone with a serum and turn them into a monster, you can cause all kinds of havoc.”

You take out your phone and tell Miniora to try to hack into the security cameras and check for problems before focusing your attention on the game itself. Meliora isn't especially good with this game, and you rapidly create a solid lead, one which begins to close as Meliora begins to get a grasp of how the game is played. You each hit nine points before Meliora goes tense right as you're about to make the final shot, her hand jerking to the side and the puck sliding right in. The strange man walks over to the side of the table and smiles at you both.

“How cute. He even taught you to act like a real girl.”

He turns towards you.

“Don't mind me. Petty grudge against her father over something that's almost ancient history at this point. We both know the drill at this point, we have a little routine we have to follow.”

Meliora closes her eyes.

“Hello. How are you?”

The man smiles broadly.

“I've been better, I'll admit, but we both know I have something to be excited about with the conference coming up. I'll unseat your father this year for sure.”

Meliora grits her teeth and opens her eyes, glaring at him.

“You'll never beat him. My father is ten times the scientist you'll ever be.”

The man chuckles a bit.

“Perhaps, but I have a trick up my sleeve this time.”

“I'm Doctor Gulag.”

You nod and smile.

“A pleasure to meet you, Doctor Gulash. Shame I'll have to report you to the school for hassling the students.”

Gulag stands there for a few moments and turns to Meliora, who is red in the face.

“He didn't... Did he? He made you a student? That's...”

He grins.

“That's adorable! And pointless. Was the point to try to socialize the toaster? I'll never understand that man.”

“I have my own business to attend to anyway. Have a nice day.”

He heads for the door leading to the amusement park area. Once you get outside Meliora hangs her head a bit, pulling up her hood. You try to come up with something to change the topic, or at least help her vent.

“So... His name is Gulag? Seriously? What a joke.”

Meliora glances at you.

“He might only look as old as my father, but he's well over a century old. He took the name from a project he worked on in Russia, something about a slave race and labor camps. He experimented on a lot of people to create better laborers, but the project was canceled before he completed his work. I don't know what his real name is.”

You nod slowly.

“Alright, so less of a joke than I expected... What's the science conference thing?”

Meliora sighs and looks at the ground as she walks.

“It's a competition. Scientists from around the world compete for the right to work here at this school, using whatever resources, spells and materials they want to further their own ends and goals. In return, they teach monsters about sublimation and wave motion. It's like being paid in gold bars to sweep floors for them. My dad won his job using my prototype body, and he's kept it using my sisters, constantly advancing the fields of artificial intelligence, golemancy and robotics. But he's spent so long working on making us a happy family that he might lose his job this year unless we can come up with something spectacular...”

“Unless you can come up with something so miraculous that it'll impress the judges, fueled entirely by scientific processes and simple magic, then not really. The best you could do is lab assistant, but then I'd need to teach you all the names for the tools and chemicals. We'll figure something out. We always do.”

Meliora looks around briefly.

“Call it good fortune. I didn't plan for this, but it'll be fun. Is that a yes or a no?”

Meliora hesitates for a moment, turning away and taking something out of her pocket. You can hear a soft clicking noise, like buttons on an old phone or calculator, and after a few moments she turns back to you.

“...fine then.”

You turn and head for the movie theater without another word, glancing at the list of films currently playing.

“Suggestions on what to watch?”

Meliora glances at them and sighs.

“Well, the only really good one is the sci-fi one, but even that one is just a mess of special effects...”

“Let's watch something terrible and mock it relentlessly then.”

Meliora looks at you for a few seconds, then nods.

“I can't believe we wasted our time on that movie.”

You nod.

“Still, my comedic timing is second to none.”

Meliora rolls her eyes.

“It wasn't even a funny joke, it was only amusing because three seconds later he repeated the line.”

You shrug and smile at her.

“Then it was luck. It still made you laugh though.”

Meliora pulls up her hood with a huff.

“So now what are we going to do? Should we head back now or keep going with... whatever it is that we're doing out here? I mean, it'll probably be dark soon, right? So we should either get somewhere safe or go back to our room.”

You agree to head back with Meliora and make your way back to the school by bus. As you head for your dorm room you spot Jennifer talking with a man in a suit. He has an odd way of standing, far too rigid and precise, and his expression is a calm smile that's a little unsettling. The thing that strikes you as the strangest are his eyes. They remind you vaguely of the dean's, though it's hard to tell from this far away. She looks like she's yelling at him about something, and he's just standing there and letting her.

You head back to your room with Meliora and let Jennifer figure this out on her own. You don't want to get swept up in this mess right now, not when it might mean giving away too much info to the dean. You find Athena has moved the fort back to the couch, and is in the process of using Athena's tools and books to make a city in the middle of the room. You skirt the edge and head for your bed with a smile.

“What are you working on, sweetie?”

Athena turns to you and grins.

“A scale model of the city. I'm trying to redesign sections of it to optimize efficiency, and place ice cream parlors on every street intersection. I think I almost have it workable...”

Meliora sits down beside her.

“Why ice cream...?”

Athena gestures to the city.

“Happiness. Humans crave it, as do all living things. And ice cream is happiness. I learned this from a very reliable source.”

Meliora nods briefly and casts you a wary glance.

“Athena, perhaps at some point we could share accumulated data, and compare notes?”

Athena nods slightly and smiles cheerfully.

“Of course! That would be fun.”

Meliora nods and heads for the couch, adjusting the fort and booting up her MMO. You've got a few hours to kill before you summon up the ghost of your dead vampire father to sign a school field trip form.

You decide to focus on your studies, mainly to catch up on work and keep it from piling up. You spend the next few hours making small talk with Athena and Meliora and tinkering with your various projects, brushing up on your Latin and completing the next week's worth of homework assignments. By the end of it you feel pretty drained, but at least you won't have to worry about it for a while. You're getting pretty good at cranking out your assignments and keeping pace with your schoolwork while having an active social life and pursuing your goals.

A glance at the clock tells you that it's an half an hour until midnight, and your phone goes off as you're looking at it. A message from Jennifer letting you know that the circle has been booked and that she's ready whenever you are. You gather your things, pry Athena away from her tinkering, and follow Jennifer's directions to the history club room, and from there, to the hidden passage that leads to the basement of the school. From what you've seen so far, the floors below the main part of the school are full of weird old architecture, and this section is no different. You find Jennifer standing by a glowing circle of runes etched into the floor, wearing some sort of black robe and holding a piece of chalk.

“Good evening.”

Athena smiles and runs over to Jennifer, hugging her tightly.

“Hi there!”

Jennifer looks at her for a moment, then at you.

“A friend of ours, I take it?”

You nod and take the chalk when she offers it.

“I'll tell you later, it's a long story.”

Athena giggles and runs around the edge of the circle.

“So what does this do?”

Jennifer gestures to the chalk.

“Just focus on the name you called him by, write it in the circle, and it'll call him forth.”

You kneel down for a moment and focus on your dad, smiling at Athena briefly.

“Well, you're about to meet your grandfather.”

You write the word “Dad” in the circle.

Nah. We'd still need to become immortal. After all, we can't leave our daughter to face eternity all alone.
And then there's the question of mom.
>>
The circle glows brightly for a few moments and you can feel it drawing in energy to power itself. You rest a hand on one of the runes and try to focus on the parts of the spell, and as it conjures your father's spirit you feed it more and more energy. Instead of a wisp of blue smoke or a translucent ghost like the spell is supposed to create, you direct and channel your own power and add it to the mix, and the figure that appears before you looks exactly like your dad did while he was alive. His skin glows faintly, and he looks a little out of it for a few seconds, but aside from that, he looks like he's flesh and blood once more.

“What the heck...?”

He looks at you for a few moments, then at the runes.

“Oliver, what did I tell you about raising the dead with necromancy? Now the angels are going to be hunting us down, you can't just resurrect me!”

Jennifer looks at you and quirks an eyebrow.

“Did he really?”

You nod slowly as you get to your feet.

“He was a hunter. He told me all kinds of weird stuff. And dad... uh...”

The shock hasn't quite hit you properly yet. The man who raised you, who you hated so much until you discovered the truth, and who you had to kill with his own weapons, is standing right there.

You know, since he came back without the vampire attitude, maybe mom would too?

Before she was changed, she was a hunter, after all. So without the vampire influence making her a complete cunt, it might be worthwhile to talk to her.

You pause for a few moments to try to get your voice to work right.

“Hey there. Uh... Yeah, so... I've...”

You gesture to Athena for her to come closer, resting your hands on her shoulders.

“Athena, this is your grandfather... Or rather... his spirit... Dad...? This is Athena. She's my daughter.”

“Hey there, kiddo! You look...”

He pauses for a few seconds.

“Modified flesh golem...? No, that's not right... Homunculus...? Yeah, that's closer, but... Something's off.”

He shrugs and steps out of the circle, and Athena timidly approaches him. He hugs her tightly and smiles, tussling her hair, and Athena hugs him back.

“Hi Grandpa.”

Your dad chuckles quietly.

“Hi. Keeping your dad out of trouble?”

She nods and smiles, turning to you.

“Yeah, I... Dad?”

You wipe your eyes and smile, tears rolling down your cheeks.

“You've gotten stronger... Good. I was worried you might fall apart completely, but you held on.”

“Might I just say that I'm beginning to understand exactly why you turned out the way you did?”

You nod and pull out the form from your bag.

“Dad, part of why I called you here is because I've got a form for school.”

Your dad nods.

“And I'm sure that it's a very important form, but my marriage vows expired when I did and your mother isn't in the afterlife.”

He pauses and looks at you for several seconds. His smile starts small and grows rapidly.

“Oh, I see what's going on here. This is the enchantress who cast the spell for you, and the golem is your daughter... But people don't just do those kind of spells for anyone, so this must be...”

He takes Jennifer's hands in his own.

“Welcome to the family. I know it's an awkward way to meet your in-law, but a lovely lady such as yourself is a welcome addition to the Spencer clan.”

You hold the form up in front of his face.

“She's not my wife, dad. Focus. I don't know how long the spell will last for.”

You offer him a pen and he signs the form hastily, passing it back to you. You slip it back into your bag and blink.

You nod and smile, leaning forwards.

“There's one last thing I want to try...”

You write “Mom” in the circle and focus, trying to conjure her. There's a soft sputtering noise for a few seconds before a horrifying, twisted visage forms in the center of the circle. The body that appears is twisted in agony, the face contorted and screaming silently. You only vaguely recognize it as your mother. After a few terrifying seconds it vanishes completely, the chalk turning to dust in your hand. Jennifer sighs and gets to her feet.

“I think that's all we'll be getting tonight... Whatever you just tried to conjure, it's stuck somewhere very unpleasant at the moment.”

“Time to head back to my room, I guess. I need to sleep, and... check something in my dad's notes.”

Jennifer nods.

“Alright then. Glad to help. I'll text you sometime tomorrow if I get the chance.”

She turns and walks off without another word, leaving you with Athena, who yawns and hugs your side.

“Daddy, carry me...”

You nod and scoop her up, hugging her to your chest and walking back to your room. Your head is swimming. By the time you get to your room you remember what you needed to talk to Jennifer about, but you make a mental note to ask about it later instead. Dad was a vamp. That's why we killed him.

You know if we don't do it now, someone will hear about it somehow.

Can't use a secret weapon without knowing what it is.

*Is* a vamp, anon. Not was. Since vamps are undead they might get a kind of false positive summon that just results in that, rather than that just being what it looks like when you try to summon someone from hell.

I meant currently a vamp. To check to see if that's what you get when you summon a walking corpse's soul.

Dad said he was in paradise, so betting he made it to heaven. Which kinda makes me want to let him rest there.

That's a bit of a drastic assumption as to the nature of the conversation. Also kind of a faggot thing to do, I mean, death isn't the end, we're already planning to bring back the dead, you'd rather ruin any chance of a happy ending for anyone or Jennifer being revived out of spite for failing in the first place?

You carefully slice into the binding until you find a seam, and you run your knife along it to open a secret compartment in the spine of the book. Inside it is a key with the number 5 stamped on it. It looks like it's for a locker of some kind, and it's radiating some fairly potent magic. You pick it up and examine it for a few moments, trying to identify the spell involved, when you notice that if you press firmly and rub, you can make the number change from 1 all the way to 9.
