Any game where save scumming is considered a valid tactic is bad.
>>
>>45584675

So don't save scum? Turn on Ironman mode or whatever they call that disables your ability to do so.
>>
>>45584675
Is there a board game where you can save-scum?
Because if there isn't one, kindly fuck off back to >>>/v/
>>
You seem to be on the wrong board to be complaining about that friendo.

To steer this on topic, what would be the best system for an XCOM game?
>>
>>45584790
XCOM probably

LOOK AT HIM
LOOK AT HIM AND LAUGH
>>
>>45584753
Not OP, but I think he meant X-COM as a good example, because you literally have to turn on a special setting to even be able to save scum.
Unless he meant Save Scum in a broader term than just doing the same thing over and over again until it works.

>>45584814
Pretty sure he meant for an RPG set in the X-COM universe.
>>
>>45584675

Some dudes from the Song of Swords thread have been doing an xcom homebrew. It's not even near to complete, and it will probably never be completed unless someone else does the job.

>WHY WOULD YOU DO THAT?
I enjoy it when shit hits the fan, when you stop thinking how to save everyone, and start thinking about who you will have to sacrifice just to leave another day.
After all, losing is fun!
>>
>>45584961
Losing is fun, and in my games it is always rookies that lose. Here's your gun, soldier, and here's your grenade. Now hold back the chryssalids while we and the VIP get to the evac. I'm happy to say nobody who's gotten to their third promotion has died yet. Though it has been pretty close several times. Like once when it came down to a grenadier take chances shooting a plasma nade at his own feet or face even more certain death.
>>
>>45584675
I once had a savescum fag complain to me that Darkest Dungeon was bullshit.

G l o r i o u s.

Strike!
>>
>>45584786

Unless you not down certain board-states and turn orders ahead of time, so the game can reset to a certain point of play.

Of course, considering the game has human players, each player has meta-knowledge of the possible outcome of a choice or decision that was made before the board state was reset, meaning they'd know the outcome of at least one possible choice that could be made.

That would actually be a somewhat neat as a time-travel mechanic.
>>
>>45584675

Save scumming is never valid.

Just cheaters trying to convince themselves they aren't shit at the game in question.

Sorry are you upset it does scales or that it doesn't?

If you're looking for more skirmish scale 40k try looking for necromunda.
>>
>>45590759
The systems for re-rolling stated have a set number per sessions, or per"something else that allows you to get more". Which makes you save them for important moments.

Save-scumming can be done again, and again, and again, at not cost other than time.

You'll want battle scanners before the first terror mission. I like to go Alien Biotech > Advent Officer > Advent Trooper. You should have enough time to slot in Modular Weapons somewhere too. Also, weapon research always before armour. Offense is the best defence.
>>
>>45592846
>That can be done in three hours
30 minutes, 2 hours and 30 minutes of requisition forms, quartermaster dickery and lugging around heavy stuff and more requisition forms.
I imagine a whole fucking organization dedicated to fucking up aliens would cut down on bureaucracy.
>>
>>45592862

I don't think it scales very well down to only a dozen or so minis.

Necromunda isn't bad but it's also rather focused on 'Gangers with scavenged gear' as a whole.

You're not gangers in Xcom but you'll be Salvaging gear all right.

Hitman: Blood Money has save-scumming as a central mechanic, with the number of mid-mission saves you're allowed being the most significant change between different difficulties. Only on the easiest difficulty can you save and reload ad infinitum.

It's probably one of the most autistic and convoluted RPG's I've ever seen. It's pretty much un-fucking-playable, every system from character creation, over combat, to pretty much everything else is bogged down by infinte amounts of minute bullshit. The bookkeeping you have to do at any given moment would make a grown accounttant cry.
It's glaringly, blatantly imbalanced and the way how everything is as complicated and copious as possible makes you wonder if it was created by one of the most autistic people on the planet.
I usually don't use that fucking buzzword, but in this case it's 100% accurate. It doesn't help that it was written by a fucking german.
Hell, I'M german and I like crunchy games, but this? This is just retarded and unplayable.
In conclusion, fuck Contact.

Any stealth game amount to guesswork. There's always a risk that you walk into patrol you had no way to know about ahead.

Hitman adds less-then-obvious restrictions to the game.

FTFY

And note that there is a difference between having a sound strategy/tactic, and between bullshit like the peasant railgun.
>>
Generally, I don't think it's right for any game to hang make it or break it situation on a single roll.

XCom 2 hacking is a big offender. Other things also suffer, like chained abilities, but this one I just can't tolerate.
>>
>>45594447
>Generally, I don't think it's right for any game to hang make it or break it situation on a single roll.

That doesn't happen, though? Any hack that is required for a mission to succeed is a guaranteed success, with the rolling just being for some additional goodies. Apart from that, failing a hack (most likely during a haywire) is no different than missing with a shot or a psy power fizzling out. It's only as make it or break it as you make it, since there are several other options of dealing with mechanical enemies.
>>
>>45593620
So it's a perfect xcom game is what you are saying.
>>
>>45593748

That's why you scout, hide, lean around corners, and listen for footsteps.
>>
>>45593748
What >>45594723 said. But keep in mind that a proper stealth game always gives you ways to know what's ahead of you, whether that is the power to actually see through walls, with the challenge simply being to find a route through the enemies without being spotted, or the abillity to reach vantage points/hack into camera systems to have a clear idea of the layout.

A stealth game that doesn't give you a way (simple or complicated) to see your enemies before they see you, is not a stealth game.

>not superhuman difficulty

They must've met I see myself as a bit of a connoisseur for obscure RPGs The fact this one slipped under my radar probably not to be taken as a good sign
>>
>>45584675
People savescumming in UFO defense was even worse since losses of individual soldiers mattered and individual missions mattered so much less, you could deal with a couple of disasters and it would still be cool.

Yet you can watch let's plays of people literally saving before they do anything and reloading every time they miss, even though they're playing on low difficulty and it doesn't matter if 13 out of the 14 rookies on that mission die.

In nuXcom at least losses matter enough that loading after a truly terrible turn is a reasonable thing to do.

Devs released the game without a dedicated driver, or so I've heard.
>>
>>45595467
Aside from the few glitches where model failed to rotate properly (And one really funny where ranger forgot to put sword back and started shooting from the shotgun on her back) only one real bug I encountered was the final mission where AI just decided it doesn't want to play with me anymore and stopped doing anything.
>>

>>
>>45595731
Yes but meatshields and disposable stunrodders.
>>
>>45595731

Probably. There was so little point in developing them.
>>
>>45595799
Well, I always had the designated crazy dude who would get a stunrod and laser pistol. That dude saved my ass more than once, honestly, by sheer rate of fire.
>>45595834
I had dudes who would not break under fire, shrug off psychics, eat multiple plasma shots, could tank alien grenades, and hit their mark 8/10 times.
I actually got a Xcom Commander, the legendary Dat Jap, who could singlehandedly turn the tide of an entire battle, who stormed a battleship solo, who racked up the single highest kill count in X-Com history of 29 aliens, and survived a blaster bomb with 8 fatal wounds.
Fuck you there was little point, I had a goddamn hero of humanity.
