I've been out of Fantasy and 40k for about 8 years. Fantasy 10.

What the fuck happened to Fantasy?
>>
>>45325814
GW killed it, and replaced it with a small skirmish game which could only be truely said to have been roughly inspired by Warhammer Fantasy at one point.
>>
>>45325814
The mad men blew it all up. Damn them all to hell.
>>
>>45325814
Warhammer Fantasy is kill

G-Dubs replaced it with He Man
>>

Fantasy wasn't selling well so gw scrapped it and replaced it with something new

Is 40k still ok?

At least the fantasy models seem to still look ok for the most part.

It's as it has been for the last decade.

Is that okay? who can say.

It still as shit as ever

40K is still 40K, take that as you will

Thanks to low sales, Fantasy is now also 40K

Only in big tourneys. Everyone tends to skip it since that is too difficult for some armies to do on a budget

GW killed it to make a Saturday morning cartoon version of Moorcockian fantasy and made a rule system with zero complexity.

The new artwork is also now just fine, mediocre or deviant art tier.
>>
Im also just coming back after 15 years away. I'm seeing a lot of fuckhuge models in 40k throwing buckets of dice around.

Is that necessary to play competitively these days at the local hobby shop? Or is it just tourny list powergaming?

Also, is there no longer a limit on Eldar scatbikes? Because holy fuck man...

>Fantasy wasn't selling well

>dropped out of the top 5 in 2013

Looks to me like GW fucked up with 8th edition horde rules requiring more models, switching from plastic and pewter to resin and keeping the prices the same or increasing (despite saying they would decrease because cheaper material), dropping specialist games completely, and End Times just completely fucking up the setting and giving a big middle finger to their fans.

Not too mention their fixation on 40k and Space Marines in particular, ignoring everything else.

See now if Age of Sigmar was based on a Saturday Morning Cartoon show, it might have a likeable protagonist or a degree of self awareness or irony.

But just giant faceless armoured guys fighting angry armoured guys in endless, pointless battles.

But you will love it, since only 8th and 7th editions grognards hate changes, almost all veterans prefer AoS to WHFB, 9th age and KoW.
>>
>>45331965
>since only 8th and 7th editions grognards hate changes, almost all veterans prefer AoS to WHFB, 9th age and KoW

You what now? No one objected to the changes in 7th from 6th, the core rules were a lot better (though army book power creep became real during 7th). The changes from 7th to 8th were drastic though, and some thought for the better, some thought for the worse.

The changes from 8th to AoS though were even more drastic. AoS doesn't even resemble WHFB, so I don't know what "veterans" prefer it, the only people I know who prefer it didn't like WHFB in the first place.
>>
>>45326831
Yeah, I hated horde rules too.
>>
>>45326647
there's almost no limit on anything now. Through Formations you have an option to make ridiculous force detachments like 10 heavy supports or what not.
With allies you can combine (using a seperate force organisation chart) the cheese of one army with the cheese of another. Huge titans and baneblades are fairly common and are a perfectly legal for normal forces.
It's just take whatever you have points for.

I think it was also key members leaving the studio, so they ended up with the B-team trying to not fuck up the game.

Didn't a lot of them leave because the corporate greed was taking over?
>>
>>45334792
Yeah, I think thr suits basically wanted them to focus on WHFB and 40k, and never make any other new games like Mordheim or BFG again because the suits considered them to not be worth it.
>>
>>45334872
Yeah, I remember them dropping support for all the specialist games.
>>

Not just that. They considered that manufacturing new specialist games to be bad for business.

>>

>>45331965
>But you will love it, since only 8th and 7th editions grognards hate changes, almost all veterans prefer AoS to WHFB, 9th age and KoW.
You, sir, are a sorry delusional fellow, and also full of shit.

I liked WHFB years ago. I abandoned GW entirely in late 7th edition, but still looked back at it with some bitter love.
And I find nothing to like in AOS. Not in its childish design, not in its poor execution, not in its lackluster and stupid rules. It amazes me that people somewhat manage to like it, but that's fine, people on /tg/ have the weirdest fetishes and I am noone to blame.
But one thing is liking it and one thing is defending it as a decent game, or its models as decent models (not to mention the 'premium top models' GW wants to sell them as).
>>
>>45335592
Yeah, that's basically my viewpoint. I really didn't like the direction the game was taking under the 7'th edition and the miniatures where departing from the more grounded design they had through 5'th and 6'th edition. So it became clear to me that I was not their target audience anymore. With the 8'th edition I had a complete fallout with the game because I really didn't like what they did with the rules, the fluff was either just copypasta of stuff I already read or just bad and the miniature design had become even worse in my eyes.

However, I always kinda had a small hope that WHFB would head into a better direction. The End Times and AoS completely destroyed this hope and it mostly seems like an intentional mockery of WHFB. The AoS minis has some of the worst design I have seen GW come out with ever. All I can say about the rules is that I guess it is a game per definition.
>>
>>45335103
after looking a bit into it I may be realizing the corpses are falling from a hole in the outer surface (the deathlands) and that everything below the green vortex is some kind of underground place, but I'm still not sure about it
>>
>>45326396
>Saturday morning cartoon version of Moorcockian fantasy
to be honest, WHFB always was that
reading Moorcock right now, WHFB Chaos is joke
>>
>>45335763
Nah, WHFB was a meltingpot of all the cool fantasy people read in the 80's and 90's, but yeah, Chaos is clearly a silly punk version of Moorcocks Chaos.
>>
>>45325814
I gave up fantasy a while ago. LotR scratches that itch.
>>
>>45335787
LotR was a fantastic game, too bad it never took off where I am.
>>
>>45325814
Liar, you haven't been out of 40k and Fantasy for 8 to 10 years.

You wouldn't come to /tg/ after ten years out of the loop, you would return to Portent, to find it missing. You're just trying to start a shitstorm
>>
>>45336151
I'm not OP but it's not unbelievable that one can leave Warhammer but still frequent /tg/ anyway. Other games occasionally get discussed here.
>>
>>45334792
yeah. that's why priestley, thorpe and alessio did at least. can't really say chambers did seeing as he went to blizzard of all places lol
the perry brothers do still do the odd mini for GW (like some of the great Hobbit stuff), but they're doing their own thing for the most part.
>>
>>45336020
not op - i haven't played since the launch of 5th ed 40k but i still look at warhammer stuff on 40k occasionally
so that's 8 (9?) years or so. I dunno. I have this nostalgic attachment to it, but I don't really enjoy it anymore. I didn't like the direction the game was going in, I preferred it as a small skirmish game with a hq, a few of troop squads then a tank or creature or two.

How? Moorcock came up with the ideas that GW ripped off, but his depiction of Chaos wasn't exactly more complex than Warhammer's. There was the conflict with Law I guess, but early Warhammer had that too.
>>
>>45336179
Of course, but then you would have picked up some news about what happened to fantasy.
>>
>>45336336
Honestly, I was kind of in that boat myself. I heard about the End Times, but I figured it was a what if scenario rather than the legitimate complete destruction of the game.

It was something of a shock when AoS came along.
>>
>>45336360
Same but I catch up really qickly, worst for me is I liked the fantasy 28mm, but with what happened now where do I go, I don't like the Kings of War rules, my favorite army was Lizardman they took the shortest end of the stick if that was even possible, and Privater Press is not what I was lokking, but it's where I'm going since fuck 40k unbalanced system.
>>
>>45336703
Just keeping playing whatever edition you like with friends.
>>
>>45336861
You're assuming I have friends, my friends don't like wargamming, and the few that do Still think 40K rocks and is balanced, so I gave up playing with them.
>>
>>45336243
left in 2004 and made the Starship Troopers game by Mongoose before going to Blizzard.
>>
Omg I feel sick I just started reading this thread and went to GW website to see stuff, and I'm felling bad, WAY bad I saw sad excuses for wulven, Dwarfs ridding dragons, daemons that looked like Japanese Onis badly done and and unproportional manticore, and I decided was enough. It's actually getting worse by the month
>>
>>45326831

Horde rules happened not even five years ago, lying fuck, if you were out for ten you did not even know what it is

Me too. I remember a white dwarf battle report where there was a unit of 25/30 High elf spearmen and I was amazed at how bit it was.
>>
>>45325814
You (and a lot of people) were out for 8 years. Gw decided fantasy no longer had a fan base and replaced it (just as people started to care again due to end times, mind you) with Age of Sigmar: the "who's line is it anyway?" of wargames...

Because the points don't matter.
>>
>>45337304
i'm feeling the same but then gw sometimes comes up with a handfull of amazing models like the sydonian dragoon and the techpriest with the swanky pope-hat. and i think they might be turning things around for the better, but then they release some more shit again and its somehow even more shit than the last shit they cranked out and i lose hope again.
meanwhile the prices keep rising, entire games are abandoned and its painfully obvious the company is ruled by people who don't really understand their customers and fanbase.
it's sad.

It is 100% official. I went downtown to the FLGS had a look in the Fyreslayer book and there it was. It is so increadibly bad that I can't belive that GW would publish it. It's sad really, because to me GW's illustrations used to be a measurement of quality in the industry and was hard to beat.
>>
>>45342904
Gw is only still GW on name. Let's just hope that when a story ends a new one begins.

Ok maybe not the best quote, let's just hope a new company rises and makes a good quality game for a fantasy setting. really don't like those mantic elfs and rules in general.
>>
>>45343148
Mantic at least has a game with rules that resembles WHFB, unlike GW.

That's the world we live in.
>>
>>45343547
It's sad cause it's true, well when I move to a civilized country where I can find shops with demo games I will give it a try not gonna invest in a game alone since my friends Gave up completely and I'm unemployed, if I get a job I may get the starter box even if just to paint them, but then again I also want maybe give Warmahordes a try, but mantic is far more accessible and it's quality getting better, (still those old elves are weird), and I want a fantasy wargame not a skirmish game.
>>
>>45343724
Well, Kings om War is made with proxies in mind and they have pretty much made army lists for all the old WHFB armies after GW killed the game. If anything KoW is a lot faster to play than WHFB ever was. So it's a good game for people with limited free time.
>>
>>45343908
