Most humane while not being retarded chapter coming through.

Step aside Lamenters and Salamanders.
>>
>>45251501
Are they really all that humane? Aside from their obsession with their eventual death, they seem to be a fairly standard chapter.

At best you might say they have Buddhist-like ideas about life being full of suffering.
>>
>>45251536
Their entire mentality is about being the most self-suffering fatalistic grim bastards possible, but all in the name of ensuring that mortal humans don't suffer like they do.

They all see themselves as being already dead and that suffering and pain is their lot in the universe and nothing will change that, so nothing can hold them back from fighting as hard as they can to protect the innocent and the faithful from feeling their suffering.

They're one of the only chapters that manages to be both very grimdark and very sympathetic about protecting regular humans, without those two sides of their mentality conflicting.
>>
>>45251551
>All of creation suffers, young ones. Only in accepting our own mortality can we make a difference. Only in bearing the burden of our failures can we find the strength to go on. Only in detachment from glory, or honour, or jealousy... from life itself can we hope to spare others from grief.

They're pretty cool, honestly. The only problem I have with them is that, in one short story, a marine they'd already declared dead managed to return to the Chapter, and they had to spend a long time figuring out what to do about him.

Ah well, at least they're not the Obsidian Glaives.

Meanwhile, Imperial Fists are doing the opposite of what Space Marines are supposed to do. They don't fortify a place up and get into wars of attrition. Space Marines are supposed to drop pod down on the most important target in the enemy's lines and then kill it.
>>
>>45252228
Come on, if a fortress is being besieged by Chaos Space Marines, you need Space Marines manning the walls for the defenders to have a chance.

>>45252324
Or, you drop those Space Marines right on top of the CSM artillery and prevent them from being able to do much of siege at all.
How many times do Space Marines actually win in a siege? The Imperial Fists lost the siege to the Iron Warriors in Storm of Iron. The Excoriators got slaughtered down to a single man by the Cholercaust, and it was only the timely arrival of the Legion of the Damned who, in true Space Marine fashion, appeared behind enemy lines and took them out. Hell, even the Emperor knew the siege of Terra was a losing battle and chose to teleport onto Horus's ship to fight him rather than continue the siege.
>>
>>45252382
To be fair, in the Siege of Terra it was eight legions up against four.

The Space Marines often are more like the tip of the spear, but they can also do great in bolstering a human defense and making them last longer and fight harder where on their own they'd easily break and flee. What's the point of beating the enemy in a few battles if you lose what you were fighting for in the first place?
>>
>>45252382
The Excoriators were terribly outnumbered though.

Space Marines are always out numbered. At most, they deploy at just over 1,000 guys. That's why they suck at sieges. You need numbers to survive a siege.
>>45252406
Fair point, but you should only need a squad or two to manage that, not entire companies. Hell, even when the Ultramarines were defending in a siege, Damnos, they still lost and they're "The Best Chapter Ever."

>imperial fists don't even have all the geneseeds working.
I'm continually disappointed that there isn't more of this going around in 40k. Stuff like a chapter that has poor-quality Lyman's ear so their situational awareness is bad compared to other marines. Or one where the mucanaroid no longer functions so they have to take extra care in void-fighting. Or one where taking one's helmet off in battle is severely punished because a long time ago their melanchrome stopped working and now they're vulnerable to radiation.

Hell you could make a chapter like the Templars or Storm Wardens with a kind of crazy yolo philosophy because they no longer have a sus-an membrane, so since serious wounds are more likely to kill them they dive into combat to cause as much damage as possible before they die.

It's really kind of lame that out of all the chapters with the constant worries over production and degradation of gene-seed the only ones where GW actually wrote some kind of weakness is in the Fists, and everyone else just has some kind of handwavey 'problems with implementation rate' or something equally vague. Or the Space Wolves.
>>
>>45262181
>What is Death of Integrity and the Blood Drinkers?
Just need to dig up a bit. But yeah almsot no Chapter is properly "defined" by a lack of organ, can you imagine how bad it would quickly be looked upon in the Imperium?
The perfect angels not so perfect in the end? Can't have that.
>>
>>45252382
>Or, you drop those Space Marines right on top of the CSM artillery and prevent them from being able to do much of siege at all.

You then reference Storm of Iron, where the Imperial Fists do more or less exactly this and fail horrendously.

The problem with Sieges, if you get into a place where you are besieged, especially in the Warhammer Universe, you are fucked 9/10 times unless the writer wants to pump up the Faction he is writing about or the fluff states that the faction will win.
>>
>>45254572
>Loyalists were winning or at least completely preventing Chaos' breakthrough

Well they were at the doors of the Palace, if Sanguinius would have died/not been able to stop the flow, the whole siege would have ended just before the shields went down.
>>
>>45258767
