Back when you were young, did any of the cool kids ever play at your table?

What character did they use, and how well did they do?
>>
>>45233098

This is the most alpha, American high-school picture I've ever seen.

I literally cannot think of anything that could be added to the picture to enhance the stereotypes.
>>
>>45233098
His name was Dan, he played a human ranger and was always really chill, he enjoyed talking in char and always brought a load of beer for the table, one of the best players I've come across.
>>

Kinda.
My oldest friend is this six-two muscle hulk who was passionate and good-looking; these things (especially the height) helped out with him getting GF's and he lost his virginity way earlier then we did, I must admit.

But was he a "cool kid"?
Naw. He's a huge dork. All we ever did was talk about videogames (back when it was a niche market), D&D, fantasy books, scifi shows, and every other geeky thing you could imagine. His hobbies include metalworking (as in making swords and knives), classical fencing, Renissance Fairs, and all kinds of goofy as fuck shit.

Guy never could keep a girlfriend for more then a year.
>>

>American

He's practically French!

I didn't actually play a game until my second year of high school, and even then it was short lived.

Surprising amount of military guys into 40k, though.

>>

Yeah I realised that when I went to a gamesday in Paris.

Basically it's common because they get REALLY bored on missions in other countries.

The guy I was speaking to had made a huge space hulk like table with his team, work of art, probably 2x2 meters.
Plus they all got a leave to be present at the Gamesday, on the condition rhat they'd give fliers about the army to people.
It was glorious, seeing soldiers dresses up as Cadians giving papers about enlisting.
>>
>>45233098
I grew up in poor neighborhood, there were no cool kids - just poorfags, bullies and gypsies. I basically got good at math because school was holding a competition with (equivalent of) $25 main prize every once in a while.
>>
>>45233098
I MIGHT have been the coolest kid in the group.
Which sets the bar pretty low, but I was the only one who played a sport (football).
I played support characters mostly, and martials, because I was trying to get used to 3.5.
It wasn't very fun, and my least favorite groups were from that era.

>>
>>45233098
I'm still young, and I am one of the cool kids.

Checkmate, nerds.
>>
I WAS the cool kid in the gaming group... but only because my highschool experience was seriously nonstandard. I went into a top-end accelerated program, and there were enough of us that we had all separate classes from "resident" students and formed our own social pecking order that rather than being based on looks and athleticism was largely based on GPA, Academic Extracurriculars, notorious deeds, and looks in about that order. I maintained a good GPA, brought home trophies in Speech & Debate (second only to Academic Decathlon) and earned some extra helpings of glory for getting my own administrator account on the school computers under the name "Dark Lord" and shit like that. All in all, I probably made lower-middle cool kid by the abnormal standards of my peers.

As for my peer group dealing with those "resident" students... it turns out bullies don't pick on nerds when the nerds have organization, numbers, and a mix of decently physically capable individuals in with the twigs and landwhales. I'm sure the football team liked looking down their noses at us as we would at them, but Speech and AcaDec brought home trophies. Then Band got a few. Then Football did... poorly. Really both groups reserved their shit for the students in the specialist zoo/life sciences program, who were basically all stoners and not even on campus half the time.

We were the cool kids. Everyone else but us simply had too little cohesion to be considered a clique or social group.

>>
>>45233098
No. Not only were i one of the 4 people in my fucking county of my age who had even a passing interest in tabletops or games of any variety aside from Kimble and the African Star. Added to that i was an absolute autist until 7th grade, beta till 10th grade and from there on out i stopped giving a fuck, moved out of town to a place nobody knew who i was and started to build my reputation from the ground up. It's still shit, but at least not as bad as yore.

TL;DR: No.
>>
>>45234189

Shame I didn't keep the paper, it was basically 40k propaganda for the french army.

>>
>>45233098
There weren't any cool kids at my high school. Nerds, mega-nerds, "regular" academic kids, stoners/hipsters, and ghetto kids all had their own cliques and sometimes mixed, but no one was really the most popular. I've never understood what a "popular" kid is. There are kids that everyone liked, yeah, because they were nice and everyone liked them. Not for weird arbitrary reasons. So yeah, sometimes kids who you wouldn't expect to the type to play table top games played table top games, but it was just slightly unusual.
>>

Oddly I think that person was me. I was Captain of the Track an Cross Country Team in HS, had a gf, and was the (un)offical mascot of the school store.(Dressed as Zoro and did commercial for opening annoucements). Probably until senior year if anything I was the jock guy,and it wasn't until I saw a guy infront of me in class reading a Dnd book that I became interested. I think the artwork got me....

Anyway eventually I made friends with him, and then would drop by their afterschool sessions between workouts to "make fun" of them. Overall at first I would just help the DM design encounters from time to time, they all just assumed I liked video games. It wasn't until college did they finally invite me to a session, and even then I think they thought I had no interest in pen an paper stuff.

My first character was a kolbold sorcerer, an well I wasnt that great at RPing I had a good grasp on the rules(surprised them when I made a character sheet by myself for first session).

Where I grew up, most folks were pretty chill and there was not an extreme amount of class segregation in school.

One guy I played a lot of AD&D and SFB was a stereotypical jock at first glance, but he wasn't the only athletic type I played with in school.

That Girls of the high school variety were either preps who loved kender or of the nerd/freak variety who play slutty half-elven thieves.

Pretty much every teenage guy is That Guy, given enough sugar and hormones.

I went to an extremely liberal, but cliquey school. "Popularity" didn't really exist because different groups created their own pecking order if they hadn't embraced the full group-hug mentality. Bullying was exceedingly rare and never really lasted because the general attitude was so bad about it that if word got out you'd be completely ostracized. Everyone in school "got along" because everyone in school was so afraid of offending everyone else.

Back when I was in high school we had two football players in our D&D group. They were some of the "weirder" football guys, but they were still rather big and stocky looking, and the last people you'd expect to be playing D&D. They were playing with us in secret cos they didn't want people to know they were nerdy, so we made a facebook group called "Football Club" which had all of us in it so we could chat between sessions. Obviously it wasn't a football club, but people wouldn't know any different.

The two guys got pulled in by the three band kids in the group, one of whom was the previous DM before he passed it to me. I was the only non-band/football guy in the group.

One of them played a bard who had a bag of holding that was filled with an infinite amount of pebbles that he threw at the other football guy's character from time to time because it was sort of an in-joke. He also brought his guitar along and was really good at playing it.

The previous DM and the other guy played Grey Knight themed knights (like literally Grey Knights who prayed to the Emperor and everything) who were multiclass of psion and something else (this was 4e mind you).

This was back when I was new to DMing, so the sessions were sort of lackluster in my hindsight, but we still were able to have good fun.

Sadly about a year or two ago, one of our football buddies got into a car crash and died in the hospital shortly after.

Sorry to hear that bud.

>>
>>45239084
I would like to say that sounds like Hell.

But I went from age 5 to age 12 with 1 friend. Then I went from age 12 to age 16 without anyone I would call friend.

Even the company of the damned is company.

On the positive side I can say with crystal clear certainty that It made me the person I am today. Hooray for clarity.

My 13 year old self would have called that not to shabby a social order. And then would have hated himself once he got to 20 and so the two of us would be the same person at the end although he would have had better memories.
>>
>>45239703
It sounds like a dystopian sci-fi movie when I look back on it, but it wasn't actually bad to go through. Just a microcosm of society.

I had a good group of friends, and I don't think it was unique or anything. I think most people got on very well within their own groups, and you didn't have to worry about the pressure of popularity that I'd always assumed every kid had to go through when I grew up watching family television.

It wasn't idyllic or anything but when I read news stories about school gangs or brutal bullying, I like to think that what I got was much better than the alternative.

That being said, I could probably stand to live in a Brave New World.
>>
>>45239897
>Brave New World
>Not so bad

Yeah, it sounds better these days. I'm told the idea of a hatchery seemed really freaky and dehumanizing when it came out, since people didn't have things like in vitro to compare it with. And the idea of soma isn't so bad these days -everyone's already hopped up on pills to make them feel better.
>>
>>45239897
You got a good alternative.

People who bitch something lyrical about the horrors of intense order and forced conformity are usually those who haven't had to endure total social exclusion and/or being the acceptable target.

My best friend's older sister, we were in middleschool, she was in highschool, we were playing at their house, her brother being DM and doing mediocre at it, she wallks in trying to do the "bitch big sister", ends up DMing to further be a cunt to her brother, ends up enjoying it.

Every wednesday she would be DMing for us, I think she was getting off from getting the undivided attention of three younger boys while at the same time her brother got even more buttmad.
>>
>>45239331
This sounds like my group, apart from the last group. Five band people, two wrestlers. Pecking order was based off of relative positions in either organizations. Section leaders/captains traded off GMing, squad leaders typically made the decisions and the freshmen shut their faces. It worked surprisingly well.
>>
I didn't start gaming till I joined the Marines. There were 5 of us in my company and we played all the time especially on ship and deployment. The alternatives are gym, movies, vista, reading. So D&D became a real way to fight boredom.

>>
>>45233098
We were the cool kids.
Half the football team were on my /tg/ playgroup, the other half were on my /v/ playgroup. A bunch of us went to comic-con together and we kept halloween dress-up alive at school because if we did it, then it was the cool thing to do.

The stereotypical nerds weren't really nerds, just selfish assholes who thought they were better, smarter and more talented than everyone else while having worse grades that almost everyone in the sports teams, not participating in any of the school's arts/cultural activities and speaking bad weaboo.

I work at a highschool now, and this is definitely becoming more and more of a thing. EVERYONE plays video games now, even the teachers. In my experience, the kinds of people who say "we didn't have 'cool kids' at my school" are those who were in fact the cool kids but are too modest (or faux-modest) to say so, or (the larger set) were resentful of not being cool - possibly of being outright ostracized - and try to retcon their own painful memories by pretending it didn't mean anything and that it wasn't anything at all.

Yes. A reverse-cuck would be someone whose wife is loyal and not a cheating harlot, so yes.
Is, and yes. He's a level 20 Bard who gives inspiration with counseling and advice, and has profiencies in History, Insight, Persuasion and Religion. This is a guy who came off a divorce at 35 and scooped up a young good-looking black girl halfway to her college degree, married her as soon as she graduated, had 3 kids and is still with her 30 years later.
I always found myself in a weird position with my uni friends when people would complain about how awful their fathers were and how much they hated them, because I love my father and he's awesome.
He and my mother are watching TV and drinking wine as we speak.

Yeah, feels good to have a stable family that supports itself through mutual love and compassion.
And that really sucks, domestic shit is always the worst.
I started reading Meditations, and Marcus Aurelius spends fucking forever talking about all the things he's thankful for, and like the first thing he mentions is that he was born into a good family - not socially, morally. They were good people, and they raised him right. That shit hit me hard.

Namely blacks vs whites but i was with the natives and the ESL asians got involved somehow. I'm pretty sure the latinos were down because latinos.

Look. Maybe that was harsh.
I'm sorry football will never be that one game where panzy asses act like they've been crippled for life when another panzy ass flicks their ear in a sad, pathetic attempt to get a yellow card handout from the ref. I'm sorry your game is rife with hillbilly-esque caricatures who's bucktoothed, inbred, dumbass selves get angry their team lost so they have to go on a stabbing spree. I'm sorry its enjoyed mainly by monsters who's "english" is so mangled that even if they weren't piss drunk to drown the depression that is their life they'd still be near to completely incoherent. I'm sorry actual football is an actual sport with actual civilized fans that don't riot or murder if shit goes bad. I'm sorry actual football generates more revenue in a single country than the entire european arm of soccer could ever hope to touch.

European football/USA soccer - Rolling around on the ground squealing in pain because somebody brushed solders with you. Fuck you. I receive worse than that at work and still have to do another 9 hours of hard graft. Faggots.

American football - 25kg+ of body armour so they don't get hurt running into each other. Take a break ever 15 minutes in case they get tired.

Rugby - Like American Football but without the armour or stopping or breaks on the injury train.
>>
>cool kids

What is this meme.
I only remember lamewads and poseurs.
>>
>>45252725
Rugby - rules to stop someone smashing into others no-holds-barred
American Football - no such rules, actually does require the armour for very real safety purposes.

I'm not even American, and don't even watch American football, I'm just not ignorant.

His dad is a marine, wearing the uniform and saluting to the American flag fluttering behind him with the school bald eagle perched on his shoulder. In the sky, fireworks burst.

At the stadium entrance, Girl Scouts sell pie and cookies while the token black man cooks up hot dogs and hamburgers.

There, just made it super American.

>>45252725
Soccer - kick the ball around for 5 minutes before a goal is made. 95% of the game is just passing the ball. Players fake pain for some sort of yugioh card shit.
>>
>>45253225
Are you trying to suggest that American football is more dangerous or savage than rugby?
>>
>>45253333
Nah. Just that we aren't retards. We keep the violence up which is always good but keep things civil and contained with just enough protection to make sure they're ready to do it all over again 2 days later albeit with more bruises. Admittedly sometimes its not enough and a poor QB gets sacked by 7 350-400lbs of muscle guys and he gets seriously injured but a minor surgery and 3-5 games rest and he's back up and running due to our superior medical expertise.

Given that it appeared to be a stop in play, I feel like he may have been taking the piss here.

Anyways, I find it funny that soccer refuses to use cameras or replays or anything like that because referee corruption is traditional.

Err, I mean trying to maintain a constant pace is traditional.

Hahaha no professional soccer is shit who am I trying to kid.

Professional Cricket makes less than a 10th that football makes and is steeped in more stagnant tradition like you wouldn't believe.

Football is a children's game full of corruption in the guise of ludditeism.

Not for /tg/ but we had a guy who'd play dota with us and could bench 380 and squat 400 or something.

The class president was into the same nerdy stuff we were into. One imperial guard player had a 4.0+ gpa and was on varsity basketball. Popular girl would sometimes talk world building with me because we were into linguistics together. I got fairly popular among some groups because I was smart but tried not to be pretentious (it's easy though when your skills are all outside of school. Like I could hold conversations in 5 languages and was a decent programmer but that didn't help my gpa).
