But I think i'd go with a halberd, if the situation presented itself where *I* would be the one in place of an adventurer.

Unarmored combat: Spear

Armored combat: Polehammer, though realistically, I'd want as much protection as possible, so I'd take a shield for redundancy and use a flanged mace because it takes less skill than a warhammer. I only say it takes less skills than a warhammer, because a warhammer has two striking sides where as a mace can strike at any angle while still biting into armor with a flange or two. Thus, you don't need to be as well practiced in edge alignment to get a decent hit in with a mace.

For adventuring, you'd want something one-handed and versatile like a conventional sword, since it's more a matter of needing to be prepared for a number of eventualities while keeping it something you can use one-handed such as while climbing or holding things in your off hand (like reins). Polearms are nice, but effectively paperweights if an unexpected situation like needing one hand for something else arises, or you're in a tight, cramped passage where you can't get any swing-room for your fucklong weapon.

For all out combat against a regular army, polearms like warhammers and halberds shine, but only if you happen to be wearing effective armor. Otherwise, you're going to wish you had a shield in your off hand, and once again a sword becomes the most effective bang-for-your-buck option.
>>
>>45233371

It should be noted that swords are always most effective when used in conjunction with shields, unless you have a reason to use a larger, two-handed blade like a zweihander (for crushing a pike formation, or cutting a horse's legs out from under it as per Scottish claymores, for example). A shield allows you to deny most conventional weapons like spears while maximizing the situational superiority of swords in close combat, as the Romans did.

And you would definitely be able to carry a shield with you on adventures, since you can stow it on your back whenever you are not using it (and there it would serve as effective rear armor). However, it would need to be fairly light as well, probably not a shield most would bring into a conventional war situation.

Why no love for 40k?

>What is your favorite weapon of choice?
My character uses a shield and a twin linked bolt pistol. The reason for this is twofold, at ranged combat he can have the armour bonus of the sheild and the twin linked bonus of the boltspistol. This is better than just using one bolt pistol. In close combat he can additionally use the defencive bonus of the sheild to parry, while still being able to shoot with his other hand. Its the best all round weapons choice especially for a low level character.

>What is objectively the best melee weapon?
That would be a weapon that breaks other weapons.

Im gonna have to go with the power fist. Its powerfield can break lesser weapons if it manages to parry and if your fighting a weapon which also has a power field? Well one thing power fist useres allways do is lightning attack to get those sweet 3 attack rolls. But one thing you never see them doing is using the powerfist like a glove, as intended, you can grapple with the enemy and if you strike you can easily tear off his arms, even if he is weilding a power weapon, no arms, no hits.

Theoretically combining a powerfist with a twin linked bolt pistol, preferably with backpack ammo feed, could turn out quite deadly. Still not quite as deadly as a stormbolter, but with better armour penetration.
>>
>>45234441
>Power Weapons
>Not using the infinitely superior Eldar Power Sword like the radical you are

I'm an Imperialfag and it's quite easy to see how horrendously deadly Eldar Power Swords are, they're basically Lightsabers only with just enough weight to more accurately feel your swings. Not to mention, even crunchwise they have a downright absurd bonus to Parry on top of the ability to Lightning Attack, which Power Fists can't do.
>>
>>45234441

>powerfist
>best weapon that can break other weapons

Son let me introduce you to my little friend. It's called the Deathwatch Relic Blade, straight out of the Deathwatch Core Rulebook. It has the normal rules as with all power weapons for destroying other weapons, except it also has a 25% chance of destroying even other power weapons on contact. And the description is worded in such a way that, RAW, you would be able to destroy natural weapons, unarmed strikes, warp weapons, literally anything that can be parried.
>>
>>45234636
And this is better than tearing arms off how?

>>45234575
Same question.
>>
>>45234774

But anon, you can destroy people's unarmed strikes and render them unable to attack you!
>>

>>
Halberd, followed by Glaive.
>>
>>45223392
It depends on context. In a one on one duel a rapier is probably best, but if you're running around on a battlefield fighting people who have polearms and greatswords that rapier is going to be at a disadvantage. I think as a general purpose take-all-comers sword a bastard sword would likely be best (straight edged hand and a half sword).
>>
>>45223571
And what happens when you're fighting someone wearing plate armor? You can't cut through that.

>>
>>45235331
when your reach outstrips someone that much and you have that kind of leverage their "greater speed" is meaningless. They have to move through a good deal of your effective striking range to even make an attack and they have no viable defense against such a big sword swung with two hands.
>>
>>45238139

I don't think you understand how big of a speed difference there is between the kind of stabs you can pull off with a rapier and some practice and a swing with literally any weapon in existence. Swings require a much larger wind-up than lunging stabs do, and once the swing is complete you have to spend way more energy and time raising it back up to perform another swing. This doesn't change no matter how much you train with them, the physics are just different. Swinging necessitates opening up a bigass hole in your defense, while stabs keep the rapier at a good height and position to perform parries. While it is true that any two-handed sword will outreach a rapier, the reach advantage is negligible given that all competent fencers know better than anyone how reach works and how to lunge into and out of an opponent's range as efficiently as possible. It is also silly to presume that you could not parry a two-handed sword with a rapier. The only requirement for a successful parry is to divert the enemy's blow, even if you cannot directly match it, which is something that fencers learn very well how to do.

Now, if you want to talk about situations in which the montante would be superior, it would be if both participants were wearing plate armor, making it extremely difficult to score a decisive strike with a rapier, while a larger sword like the montante could still batter the opponent to death by sheer blunt force trauma.

I'd be wearing plate armor too, so pretty standard stuff. Like slightly more awkward dagger in plate fighting.
