I'm about to start a game with costum post-apocalyptic setting, but with heavy wibes from just before the 2YK shit came down. In this world, everything went to shit thanks to it. Think Fallout-ish but in the 90's (so 20 years ago).

What are some must-have things that you associate with the 90's? Bubblegumdance, Nokia 3210 and backward caps are a given, but I'd like some more examples of shit you associate with the 1990's.

Meth is called Speed an sniffed instead of smoked. But only to get a pickup from all the e, which wasn't meth back then.

Electronic music is a counter culture, like Hip Hop in the 80s, not a commercial scene of label releases and festival events with parking and security.

All TV is incredibly formulaic. Epic plots are for the big screen. But cartoons remember their political activist origin and while The Simpsons start their long decay into meaningless drivel, shows like Duckman eke out an existence on late night TV.

Holy shit the 1990s were good years. Goth girls, you could have casual, consensual sex and not be at risk for rape charges. Music was fucking amazing. Movies were, too.

Plus there was this thing. It's hard to describe. Girls were under a lot of pressure to have sex, or else they'd be a prude. More than half the girls I knew were bi, and the rest were at least officially bicurious. They were kind of under pressure that way, lest they be accused of being homophobes. It was so fucking easy to get a threesome back then.

I credit the CHristian coalition. Girls who weren't totally in that camp felt like they had to be all the way on the other side.

Plus no stupid yoga pants. Girls wore miniskirts like they're supposed to. Maybe fishnets. Damn I feel like I haven't seen a bare leg in a social setting since 2008.

Don't go by the Spice Girls. They were empty pop, but in those days the indie scene was where all the good music was. Drum and base, trance, trip hop, goth of course, techno. The rave scene was the beginning of the end but in its really early days it was tits.

Plus you were shitting money in those days. Half the 4chan crowd would be "developers" making US$80k plus. The other half that can't program would be "graphic designers" and making 40k. And the shit they'd do to keep you happy: espresso bars, massages at your desk, game rooms, people actively trying to avoid headhunters trying to lure them away to better jobs.

tldr you kids are missing out. The 2000's were ok and the 2010's are fucking awful.

>>
>>45026933

Age test failed, you mean. Half their "90s references" came from the 80s, and a lot of the rest came from the 2000s.

Gents, go watch The Crow, Wild Things, the Craft, The Professional, and Heat. Listen to Amon Tobin's Permutation, DJ Shadow's Endtroducing, and Morphine's album Yes. Go pick up the first compilation of Sandman comics. Get a couple bf/gf couples to dress like goths* and run a game of Vampire: the Masquerade-- JUST the second edition hardcover, no expansions or supplements.

*Not the Hot Topic parody that appeared later. Girls: black minidress or camisole/skirt combo, fishnets and boots or high heels. An ankh necklace. Boys: black jeans or pants, black tee shirt, or a band shirt with a goth band or weathered 70s indie rock concert shirt, black boots/doc martens, black trenchcoat, sunglasses. The 80s were all about excess and being over the top. The 90s tried to dial it back and took a "we're still in costumes, but less is more" vibe.

>>
>>45027097
>Osama bin Ladin
That's just the thing though. It's when the narrative stopped working. I'm not saying it made sense before, but at that point people couldn't believe it any more. Nothing about that character and the threat associated with it seems authentic. Which isn't to say it wasn't real, just that it didn't make sense. And still doesn't.

Since then the official narrative is obvious bullshit and any diverting opinion is crazy, reactionary, or both.
>>
>>45027081

I've always liked Whedon. But Buffy came at the end of that era. In retrospect, it mainstreamed the tropes that had beeen building up all decade.

But yeah by all means watch it. very good show. The X-files were good, too, but they don't age as well because you come into the show now knowing that the metaplot isn't going to go anywhere. Whereas at the time we were all at the edge of our seat wonedering what Chris Carter had planned for us.

You know, the It girls of the 90s aged pretty well. Natalie Portman screwed her career with Star Wars, but you can hardly blame her for it. It's funny that she does a movie as a stripper, then a movie where she has a sex scene with Mila Kunis, and everyone agreed they were good, and that was kind of it. After a decade of nerdy salivating.

Alyssa Milano and Drew Barrymore did a bunch of hot-as-fuck softcore movies, then recovered and have nice lives, careers and families. Neve Campbell just got divorced but is doing ok. Sarah Michelle Gellar and Allyson Hannigan are fine. Even most of the spice girls landed on their feet.

Then look at the train wrecks of the hotties of the 2000s: Megan Fox, Britney Spears, Lindsay Lohan, Miley Cyrus. I mean yeah emma watson and tay tay are still fine, but the jury's stil out, you know?

Lucky me in 98 had joined the army after uni and got marched off in 99 to go do peacekeeping for a couple of relatively 'fun' tours in tropical places, well they seemed fun in hindsight considering what was going to happen.
From 2000 onward it was either prep to deploy, deploying, training and repeat that until about 2007 when I just couldn't do it any more. That and getting blown up a couple of times didn't help.

I loved some of the very early pop-grunge, but the fucking attitude was terminally cringe-worthy. Grunge deserved what happened to it.

>>45027119

I thought Tank Girl sucked, but I get that people are into it. I feel like the hardline feminists were pushed into fetishes that they didn't really want to do but felt like they had to because they're feminists and don't be a fucking right-wing homophobe prude. So they faked it and talked a little too loudly about how liberating and sexy and empowering it all is. Then they got tenure and turned into frigid despots.

>I guess sluttier works, as a matter of course, to the point where a 12 year old going out in a thong and yoga pants is common?
But it's not appealing, yoga pants are pretty bad and it's so sexualized it ends up totally non-sexual. I'm glad it's not widespread here.

Never saw them in the USA. Not saying they weren't a thing, but I never saw them where I lived. I had to google what spats were. Where I was, it was bare legs, pantyhose, or fishnets.

>>45027418

Yeah more of a leg man myself. I like a nice ass but I'm not obsessed with it.

>>45027458

This guy gets it in a major way. To me yoga pants are up there with high-waisted jeans as bad fashion choices we'll all forget.

Actually, the apex of the miniskirt era was the 2000's, when it merged with zettai ryouiki and suddenly you had girls in miniskirts wearing thigh high socks or stockings. And not just goths like in the 90s but ordinary girls just walking down the street. OMFG we traded that away for fucking yoga pants?!

>>45027412

Am I getting older or is fashion getting fragmented enough that it's getting harder to tell what decade someone is from?

I walk around and most girls seem to be wearing the same pseudo-pajamas that they've been wearing since the Bush Administration. Tee shirt or hoodie, and yoga pants or pajama pants. Plus some oversized glasses. Hair's changed a lot, but it seems like fashion is getting more bland.

Yeah those were stupid ridiculed even then. It's like the 90's picked out a couple things to be the fashion choices we'd all ridicule, and then mostly stuck with classics.

Even the stereotypical guy in black tshirt/black jeans/black trenchcoat/boots/sunglasses. I mean, absolutely a cliche and a sure sign of what today we'd call a neckbeard. But as fashion choices go, they were pretty classic.

The classic goth girl in a black minidress with a silver ankh. I mean, really it's just the standard little black dress with some accessories. Flattering, not too flashy, looks great, timeless.

Add to that list something new I've seen. Activist girls with headscarves. I'm fine with women who wear them for religious reasons, but feminists putting on burkhas because multiculturalism was supposed to be parody, not an instruction manual.

In the 90's, you had girls showing how liberating and empowered they were by doing amateur porn. Or at least "fetish modeling". I'm not shitting you, they were sticking it to the patriarchy by transgressing restrictive sexual norms. Or some shit like that. It was fucking awesome.

Dushku has always been 3rd rate. Faith was hot, but after that she never had another role that wouldn't have been better suited to 100 different faces. Dollhouse didn't recover from making her the lead.

But to underline your point, look at the 90s Nickelodeon kids today. Larisa Oleynik, Jessica Alba, they have a life and a career. Maybe not Miley's, but who wants that other than Billy Ray?
>>

>>45028278

Wow that makes a lot of sense.

Yeah so when I was in my 20's lots of girls insisted that they'd never have kids, and many said they wouldn't get married. They didn't want to be some stepford wife baking cookies for the patriarchy. Several were pretty strident about it. They'd travel and party and self-actualize instead. Fish don't need bicycles either.

Then comes their 30's. Most quietly paired up with a man and had kids. They didn't admit they were wrong, mostly they just stopped talking about it and pretended they'd never believed anything else.

But a few just got louder and more determined. Their 30's roll by and as the pickings get slimmer and their own value on the market declines, any increasing temptation to settle down can be resisted. Now suddenly all your old friends are happy and their kids are cute. You feel a tug in your heart, but it's too late. Menopause is coming, and it's less a matter of meeting a good man than getting laid at all. All the men you used to date have found a new crop of 20 and 30 year olds.

So you get bitter and angry and play sour grapes with your sex drive.

tl;dr 2010's feminism is /r9k/ for women.

Men are from Mars sort of worked, because it played into nonsense stereotypes about the genders, but the fish and the bicycle thing is just so self-evidently stupid that I wonder why anyone gave it 30 seconds consideration, let alone repeat it.

She's never been as talented as she was hot. I'm not talking her career, though. I'm talking her personal life, which always seemed pretty stable.

DIdn't Jessica Alba go mainstream in the late 90's? And Cyrus in the 2000's? (NOPE, just checked, you're right, Dark Angel was premiered in 000M3)

Either way, also good examples. Jessica Alba in her prime was like stupidly hot, like so hot it was hard to comprehend. I while I miss that we never saw a nude scene with her, I have to respect that she never did one. Apparently Hollywood pulled every trick possible to pressure her into one but she stuck to her guns.

Whereas I'd have preferred never to have seen as much of Miley Cyrus as I have, and I've been trying hard NOT to look. I just find her unattractive, and it was a relief when people started saying the same thing.

>>
>>45026007
Dont forget the ''Underground'' craze. Secret raves, underground clubs, that sort of thing. Theres also the beginnings of a lot of Gothic subcultures as well so you can play around with a lot of that sort of stuff.

Smashing Pumpkins would be good for music. Something like Bullet with Butterfly Wings could be a good musical cue. Then theres NiN, Marilyn Manson and so forth.

The 90's was the era when bubblegumdance, hip-hop and industrial/gothic co-existed weirdly. They mightn't all have been mainstream but the mainstream was aware of them and having more flavour to your NPCs can help it feel more real.

Bar that, everyone seemed to have a get rich quick scheme, everyone was obsessed with something and there was less imperative to wear bras.
>>
>>45028558

Well the funny thing is that we already went through this thing in the 70s and 80s. Feminists in those days wore severe clothes, wanted to ban porn, and used slogans like "all sex is rape" and "marriage is slavery". It's easy to forget that the hate on video games and rap music came as much from the activist Left as the right. (Those Parental Advisory stickers on albums came from Tipper Gore's lobbying.)

Being openly, joyously bi had been a big thing in the 1970's, especially for men. Then the 80's hit and suddenly it all went down the memory hole. "It never happened."

Then the 90's hit and suddenly it was cool to be sexy again. The Red Hot Chili Peppers were an 80's band, but their mainstream success in the 90's was paired with the image of the macho, tough-guy alternative music bisexual man. With girls you were actually under pressure to experiment (>>45026939). Being wildly sexy was back to being ok, even encouraged.

Then by the late 2000's, people were getting prudish again. Now we're hip-deep in campus fascism: don't say or do anything that might be "triggering" to someone else, "rape culture", all that. Even with stuff like cosplay at cons now they went from "look don't touch" to "no pics without permission", and from there to, "don't even look or it's exploitation".

To me, it seems like we're on the brink of another sexual reawakening. If the cycle holds, people will relax and get back to fucking each other and we'll all calm down. Sex will get wilder and less sexy as people run out of taboos to defy, and then get creepy and sad... then people will say "enough" and clamp down, then go too far with that... then the cycle starts again.

Miley is just random. She doesn't have a style, her whole thing is hype. And that's desperate. I don't trust desperate people's impulses.

You can wank off, but you can't really follow her career or her life with interest, never mind the things she says.

But even if they try, like Lady Gaga for example, it doesn't work. She has the appeal of a transgender activist. Style, okay. Self respect, yes. But appeal? A stance in life? Let alone a message or a mission?

I don't want them to waste our time with appeals to free Tibet or pray against our economy letting children starve in the 3rd world. But I don't want them to make their money by spying on and charging children who pirate music they would otherwise not download. And making me pretend that's okay to like them.

In the 90s that just didn't come apart so much. There was Napster, and the industry wasn't ready to prosecute that. So at parties everyone brought a CD-Rom with 1,000mp3s and you could just listen to anything you could remember the name of.[/rant]

The quote originated in 1970 and was popularized by Gloria Steinem-- the face of the anti-sex, anti-man feminism of the late 1970s and 1980s. The phrase's heyday was in the late 70s.

By the time the 90's rolled around, it was only used ironically by people who hated that brand of feminism. Not just anti-feminists and MRAs (that movement was just being born and wouldn't really be mainstream for more than a decade) but by sex-positive feminists themselves to ridicule the older generation of man-hating prudes they were overthrowing.

Camille Paglia's columns go on and on and on about this... but in her defense the history she writes is pretty much spot-on accurate. She was a leader in a new wave of pro-sex feminism that saw itself as both feminist AND feminine. Her writing about this new wave that's overthrown hers is pretty fascinating.

If a man is going to risk financial devastation to marry you then you better be at least one of:

Domestically accomplished

The 90s were the coming-of-age of a generation of children from former activists, hippies, anti war demonstrators, and wannabe revolutionaries of the 70s. These parents had had all their ideals turned into Ikea consumerism and saw all their establishment friends buy villas and drive German cars. The children they brought up got some very mixed messages from parents obviously integrated into society with the pension and health insurance of steady employment but also deeply dissatisfied with the values expressed in the structure of this society.

Ok there's a lot you get right here, and a lot you get wrong.

The underground club thing was absolutely real. I remember clubs like that-- the very early days of electronica and what would eventually become the rave scene. VERY secret and exclusive, unbelievably fit girls dancing perfectly.

You get Goth wrong, though. Goth had its origins in the late 1970s, but it really kicked in in the 80s. Go watch Winona Ryder in Betelgeuse for an example. Goth was in its Quirky phase at that point. Very coture, lots of romantic era literature references, sexually open but not terribly sexy yet.

Then in the 1990s it got very, very big. First it stripped down: fewer elaborate costumes and more very simple classic looks. Much sexier. Cross-pollination with industrial music. You were way more likely to get laid. Club nights still often played 80's darkwave. As it slid into the Stripper phase, you saw goth get fetishized and it appeared much more in the media. It was the heyday of Vampire the Masquerade, when I could get 8/10 and higher girls into the games I ran-- even strippers.

Then the 2000's hit. Goth had gotten old and cliched. It was mostly the same girls, but they went from 19 yrs old and 50kg to 35 years old and 100kg. The Landwhale phase.

>>45028658
>The 90's was the era when bubblegumdance, hip-hop and industrial/gothic co-existed weirdly. They mightn't all have been mainstream but the mainstream was aware of them and having more flavour to your NPCs can help it feel more real.

Very good point, but let's add hip hop in as well. Electronica started drawing heavily from that stuff, especially trip hop. Go look up some albums and artists from Ninja Tune. The period was very experimental and cool.

Also, what "scene" you were in could be very important. A scene was basically a costume and taste in music. It's always been a thing but was VERY important in the 1990s to defining you.

Just want to pluck something out of your (good) rant. "Desperate". The 1980s were prudish, at least in terms of what social elites preached. Then the 1990s were liberated, and then sexy, and then the 2000s went from sexy to desperate. And it's that desperation that provoked the backlash that has us back deep in prudishness.

>>45028795

It's the wide availability of attractive single women that makes it so easy for a desirable man to pass on marriage and still get plenty of sex. Of course they can still TALK about marriage to get into a girl's yoga pants.

Meanwhile, a woman who wants a relationship has to put out if she's to compete. She's judged much more harshly on her body and looks because the competition has gotten more intense and fashion less forgiving. Many men will lie to her just for the sex-- and the exploiters are disproportionately represented in the desirable part of the dating pool. The incentives, as you rightly point out, all align AGAINST long-term commitment. Why risk financial and personal destruction with marriage when you can get sex and companionship without it?

She's got messages from the media saying that "you can have it all" but there simply aren't enough hours in the day to have it all, so you feel inadequate. It's all too easy to end up alone.

So while MRAs have a very very strong point to make, the sexual revolution and strident feminist hatemongering hasn't been an unmixed blessing for women, either.

This is probably a good time to talk about wicca. In the 90's lots of teens and 20-somethings practiced this and genuinely demanded that people recognize it as a religion. Again, in retrospect probably a reaction against the religious Right.

This is a very 90s thing to be into. There are still people who are into it, but it seems to have died down and is no longer socially acceptable for some reason. At least, not something you talk about.

Also, you saw the apex of the gangster films during this era. None ever really match the Godfather, but many tried. By the 1990s, such movies had become very stylized.

People talk about Quentin Tarantino's films, and rightly so, but let's not forget Heat. Michael Mann had been best known for making the stylized 80's TV classic Miami Vice. Heat encompassed and expressed the 90s in the same way: the style, the plot, the characters, the costumes, and especially the music.

Plus the long-awaited pairing of two great actors of their time: Al Pacino and Robert de Niro. The funny thing is that the two appear full-face on screen together in only one fleeting camera shot (when Pacino's cop has just pulled over de Niro's criminal for a traffic stop). Even when they go face to face at a diner they're never in the same shot together (leading to false rumors that the two actors actually hadn't shot the scene together at all).

Mostly, though, it's about the stylized criminal chic that was very big in the 90s via both rap, arthouse film, and in edgy comics. The cooler-than-thou antihero was a big deal.
>>

Before there was the Matrix, Memento, or Inception, there was Dark City. A movie that was hugely influential but never got the commercial success it deserved.

It was one of a whole chain of movies, books, and TV shows that pushed cartesian skepticism. IE "is the real world really real? and how do I know?"

This provoked the science wars of the 90's, when college professors in the humanities, especially lit crit, tried to deny that science was even legitimately real. The RPG that got hit hardest by this was Mage: The Ascension, whose first edition had been written specifically to push these ideas. As stupid as the idea sounds, its origins in speculation about virtual reality (then "just around the corner") and transhumanist questioning about identity were pretty interesting. Like any idea, getting stretched out too far and then becoming intensely political did it no good.

But it does make for some great movies.

We talked Goth earlier, but what's more goth than Dark City? The Crow. The soundtrack, the setting, the edginess, the dystopia-- this movie both embodied the cliche and became a cliche on its own. How the hell didn't this movie suck? And yet it was fucking amazing. I just rewatched it the other day and it's STILL a great movie. In many ways an ad for the decade that at that point still mostly hadn't happened yet.

And forget that Brandon Lee died while filming this. It was another Heath Ledger-tier performance... someone who didn't need to have died for people to recognize its greatness. It was just legitimately awesome acting.

Just barely. The release dates are too close to imply inspiration.

And I think you're oversimplifying. The ideas aren't new, Lovecraft for one had a lot to say on the matter. And to portray The Matrix or the eXistenZ you forgot as an expression of the same basic idea that is now used by fundamentalists to undercut reason in politics is far too vague and ignorant of so much in between. They were closer than I remembered. But I think you're missing something in the /pol/ part of your post. The right, including fundamentalists, do criticize certain scientific conclusions like global warming, but even when they do so it's in the language and logic of science. Maybe not accurate science, but the respect for science is still there.

So far as I can tell, there are no fundamentalists who criticize "reason in politics", unless you define reason as "stuff I believe to be true" in which case you could say that about any political movement. And since they don't do that at all, they don't use cartesian skepticism as a basis for it.

tl;dr just like most political movements, fundamentalists don't criticize reason in politics. They think their politics are the consequence of reason.

The Crow is a movie that you watch and now almost 20 years later, you see all the movies that it inspired at the same time. That's how influential this movie is.
>>
>>45031646
Yeah, no. I mean sure, influential, no question.

But it was poorly made, unoriginal, edgy as a purpose, and would have suffered a well justified retirement in the old hype section of the VHS rental if Lee hadn't died. It was Blues Brothers for Goths, only without stars.

Could have been a great film. But it really really wasn't.
>>
>>45031646

Fantastic fucking movie. Brilliantly acted, directed, conceived and executed. 10/10

Also wrote the script for the 90s

The first frontier of VR is of course, as was to be expected, the porn industry. They already got that shit developed further than anybody else.
>>
>>45031981
I was hunting polygons through VR in 94. It was shit, but it worked fine.
>>
>>45032160
I mean now there are machines that you can attach to your genitals that work in sync with what you see in VR.
That's one or two steps ahead of just seeing a few polygons through goggles in 94.
>>
>>45032222
And yet, it is generations from a holodeck.

>>45032260
Still better than nothing.
Not that I have any experience with VR augmented sex toys. Tbh it's cheaper to book hookers, and it's legal here too. Not that I have any experience with hooker though. Just saying.

>Men are from Mars sort of worked, because it played into nonsense stereotypes about the genders
So I did some research, and the average Tinder strat for either sex is functionally the same: formulate the opposite sex's strat based on stereotypes, then formulate your own plan to compensate.
Men assume that women are usually going to swipe left, so they swipe right on everyone they can just in case.
Women assume that men are usually going to swipe right, so they get picky.

Probably because they claimed it was ancient but it wasn't even 50 years old.

/tg/ is also far more literate than the rest of the site, probably owing to our hobbies involving reading long books to play games we'd only want to play if we'd read other long books for fun.
And when you're into reading long books, well, you tend to read a lot of history, sciences and literature.

>>45034006

You can ask and talk about anything here.

/tg/ is one of the best fucking boards on chan period.

Sabrina the Teenage Witch
Saved by the Bell

This is some kind of nostalgia thread?
I remember when the video cassetes had to be rewinded (not like this stupid DVD), when you cant go to your friends house without a call because the cellphone was something no all has, and when the only place to find shcool things was the encarta (not internet)
>>
>>45036608
>calling your friend's house
You'd shut off their internet. Better go there and ring.
>>
>>45036719
>You'd shut off their internet.
Only if you pick it up. People calling in got a busy signal if you were online.
>>
>>45036719

>Only if you pick it up.

>>

>>45036862
Sorry lad, my apartment building had a shitty network back then due to a bad set up. When you called there the internet was being shut down or slow as shit.

Hopefully now there's the fibre.

I used to have the Encyclopedia Brittanica AND the Worldbook Encyclopedia. In my day, we'd look shit up in a real book if we wanted to know it badly enough.

I remember going to bars and arguing over historical or factual things and nobody ever taking the time to go to the library to look up who was right.

I know how to thread a microfilm reader. I know how to view microfiche.

I can run a credit card on the fucking swipe machine with a piece of carbon paper.

I know the smell of a fresh ditto.

I am 80's man. Hear this, and tremblingly obey.
