>What is Exalted?
An epic high-flying role-playing game about reborn god-heroes in a world that turned on them.
Start here: http://theonyxpath.com/category/worlds/exalted/

>That sounds cool, how can I get into it?
Read the 3e core book (link below). For mechanics of the old edition, play this tutorial: http://jyenicolson.net/exalted/. It'll get you familiar with most of the mechanics.

>Gosh that was fun. How do I find a group?
Roll20 and the Game Finder General here on /tg/. With the new edition, though, chances are more games will crop up.

Lunars! What's your experience with them? Crazy shapeshifters that eat children, or adorable waifus/husbandos? Or both?
>>
my experience with Lunars! is that i used to read red panda waifu all the time in these threads
>>
>>44893955
We need more of that, desu.
>>
>>44893252

Whatever they want to be, and whatever they have to be.

Heck, if they stayed in Yu-Shan, there would be a lot of talk about octopus mail managers and fox secretaries. Sadly, what with that business with the Sids and the DBs, they are usually either way out in the province doing barbarian stuff or under deep cover, playing Mission Impossible in your back yard.

I think it was in the Scroll of Exalts in 2E. For 1E you could try Aspect Book: Earth.
>>
>>44895974
Don't have the book in front of me, but I'm pretty sure you can only use one charm per turn, so I don't think that would work unless 3rd edition has Combos like 2nd did (can't remember if it does or not).
>>
>>44896764
>but I'm pretty sure you can only use one charm per turn
That's not actually a rule anywhere. You can only use one Simple charm per turn if that's what you mean. You can use as many Reflexive or Supplemental charms as you want, if that's what you mean by 'combos'. In 2E terms, you can combo completely freely.
>>
>>44896798
Okay, this sounds insane at first blush, but I've never played in a 2E game with the free combos errata at a high enough experience to really abuse it. Is it as OP as I think it is?
>>
>>44898019
>I've never played in a 2E game with the free combos errata

Are you saying you have never played 2e with 2.5? How? Why? What possessed you to do this? 2.5 is shitty, but it's not 2e raw shitty.
>>
>>44898019

Dude what?

The one-Charm-a-turn rule was nothing but a huge obstacle; nothing in the game was actually interacting with it. 1e had free Charm usage, 3e has free Charm usage (give or take Simple, duh).

Even 2e is perfectly fine if you open up Charm usage, because huge chunks of the game were trying to get AROUND the 1Charm/turn usage and return to the normal state of play.
>>
>>44896798
>You can only use one Simple charm per turn
Where does it say that, other than not being able to do two things at once without a flurry?
>>
>>44898297
It's a combat action (p. 252). You can only take one combat action per round (p. 195).
>>
>>44898151
>>44898211
I have an eclectic group of friends who also like Exalted. Two of them like to be Storytellers. One goes by RAW, and that's the 2.5 game I played (but only for a few sessions, and I didn't understand how to build combos properly at the time).

The other hated the idea of Essence pools, so he made a homebrew system that got rid of them. Instead, Charms just flared your anima a certain amount. Played a whole campaign in the system, and it worked surprisingly well. He was also not a fan of free combos.

>Lunars! What's your experience with them?
So tragically fallen. They were once noble guardians of the Realm, but now they are murderous savages who would damn Creation in the pursuit of meaningless revenge. Perhaps the youngest will listen to reason, but the rest will have to be put down.

My Sidereal adviser tried to convince me otherwise, bless her gentle heart, but the harsh truth cannot be denied.
>>
>>44893252
Sneaky and cheeky, usually. My circle met with Tammuz (after a wolf left a letter on our pillows, which we replied to by just laying our letter on the ground outside), and we were split on whether or not to tell him some of our secrets - namely, that we had excavated and reclaimed an old First Age city. At the end of the meeting, he casually sked us to convey his greetings to the city father - by name.

We met up with one of his subordinates in the Lap. He likes to announce himself by pressing his snout into the back of our necks.
>>
My only real issue with Lunars is the circumstances that makes someone become a Lunar (Being far from civilization in harsh environments for a long time, I think? Correct me if I'm wrong) seem a bit restrictive to some character concepts.
>>
>>44905504
You have to survive impossible odds. For example, in my game, one of the princes of the Lap escaped his planned assassination after his grandfather died, and Exalted from it.
>>
>>44905663

Yes, but you need to adapt to the barbarian lifestyle. If you fail this, you could loose your Exaltation (As per 1e, and since 3e is largely a return to 1e that means non-barbarian Lunars are a no no)
>>
>>44905873
Here's a thought: There's non-barbarian lunars named as existing and living in major cities. So fuck the 1e fluff in that regard, it's entirely nonsensical to say 'you get to be one of the most powerful beings in the world, second only to Solars, but ONLY if you become a raving mad barbarian warlord'

That's like saying you can only be a Solar if you become a king. Sure, that's a viable way to be a Solar, but it's by no means what even 20% of them do, so the fluff is dumb and should be ignored in that regard.
>>
>>44905663
Oh, that's much better.
>>
>>44894779
Okay, what specifically are they liars about?

I've been kind of ignoring anything from Onyx Path these days, so I'm not up on their latest ham-handed attempts at PR.

>Yes, but you need to adapt to the barbarian lifestyle. If you fail this, you could loose your Exaltation (As per 1e, and since 3e is largely a return to 1e that means non-barbarian Lunars are a no no)
There's a tremendous difference between 3e fluff and 1e fluff.

3e is more like 1e than 2e, true, but there is no fucking chance in hell that any exalts will lose their exaltation for any reason outside of death.

Does anything important change if I make some Deathlords different types of Exalt, like Dowager being a Lunar instead?
>>
>>44912732

Pretty sure one of them was already supposed to be a Lunar.

But no, nothing that matters changes. Like, remember that "Deathlord" wasn't even supposed to be a specific kind of entity in the first place.
>>
>>44912732
Solars will no longer be uniquely malign, so this is clearly unacceptable. Unlike those wicked monsters a Sidereal would never, ever sell out the world for his own gain.
>>

>>
>>44914034
>Tell that to the devs

"In 3e you can play a Lunar who was born and grew up in Nexus, who joined the Guild and made a fortune in business, who regularly attends high-society galas in expensive imported Calinese silk gowns, sips tea with her pinky out, and who thinks the centralized welfare state is a pretty great idea. This is just as viable as Solar Conan."

http://nobilis.me/quotes:on-lunar-barbarism

>bush-squatting fantasy niggers

What's it like, knowing most of what gets squatted out into that bush is worth more than you?
Because you a shit. A shit..
In other news, Blade and Soul is out in North America / EU, with art done by Hyung Tae Kim, the guy who did the porn-tastic Savant & Sorcery cover for 1e. Feels mildly Exalted to me - anyone else tried it?
>>
>>44914034
How about you stop being a hollering piece of shit and actually read what the fucking devs have written about Lunars? They've specifically been talking about the Barbarian status of Lunars for litteral years.

Only people who don't read stuff and jump to conclusions for the sake of shitting on everything that can be shat on would think the Devs want Lunars to be Conan McShitinthebushes only. Fuck, even Conan himself wasn't that.

I think what he was trying to say was that it was pay to win. But I don't play it, so I can't say if it is or not. Wouldn't surprise me overmuch; a lot of them Korean MMOs are, but yeah.

So is there any value in taking both Dodge and Melee? Can you build a Melee character who uses Dodge for Defense?
>>
>>44917550

Yes. Use Melee for multi-attacks and a bit of alpha striking. Pick up GSS if you want. Melee has a great defensive suite, but there are other charms in the tree.
>>
>>44917550
Absolutely. Of course you can do with Melee's defensive options, which are pretty swell, but Dodge is just ridiculously good when it comes to Defense, and also provides a bunch of effects such as Initiative theft and combat mobility. I dare say a Supernal Dodge character that uses Melee for attacking would be a beast in combat. A Supernal Melee with Dodge for Defense would be pretty good too.
>>
>>44917597
>>44917617
Thanks guys. I was a bit swayed by how efficiently and cheaply someone with Dipping Swallow and a medium weapon can defend themselves, so I'm glad that Dodge has its own tools. I'll get reading into it.
>>
>>44917639
It also has the only good "perfect" defense
>>
>>44917871
But it's once per scene only. The Melee PD works as long as you have init to spend.

>Goes bat-shit crazy when anyone threatens her solar mate. Even the other Lunars think she's nuts

Yandere is best dere.
>>
>>44916733
>Gon women are btw fucking HUGE in this game if you go for height.

Am I wrong though or are Gon men way taller? It's a little disappointing to pick the super-tall option and then find out you're the Gon equivalent of a shortstack.

It's surprisingly less grindy than I expected from a Korean MMO (though I'm only at lvl 10) and the absence of an equipment treadmill so far (you start with the weapon you keep all game; all outfits are merely cosmetic) is kinda refreshing.
>>
>>44915487
The 3E core bears out this interpretation as well: from what I've seen they're not Conan pastiches, they're basically propping up the Threshold states (who are all considered barbarians by the Realm, regardless of culture or advancement) and allying with them to stymie the Realm's expansion.
>>
Does anyone have any suggestions for spear-fighting inspiration? Cool characters, fight scenes or ideas for spear evocation themes?
>>
>>44921366
What kind of spear are we talking? Just a one-handed spear, or a longspear? I'd say being able to parry ranged attacks and blow away gases by spinning the spear really fast could be a cool effect, but that might be more in line with a stunt than an evocation. If it's a throwing spear, having it return could be nice.

What can you tell us about the spear? Evocations are usually related to the weapon's origins and previous wielders, knowing more about the spear would probably make it easier to think of something.
>>
>>44921492
I'm thinking Longfang, so a one-handed thrown (short) spear. I'm in the design stages of the character at the moment, I have a couple of weeks, but I've got nothing about the background of the spear so far.
>>
>>44921553
Well first and foremost, you should consider and write out the spear's history before you try to make evocations. Was it's previous owner a staunch enemy of the Fair Folk? Make it do aggravated damage to creatures from the Wyld. Did it's creator forge it as he swore an oath to slay the man that wronged him? Give it bonuses to attack and damage against targets the wielder has negative intimacies with. Is the spear made of red jade? Give it fire powers of some sort.

Work with your ST on the spear's history, it'll really help you both come up with evocations.

Well, I'm a Zenith with Brawl, Athletics, Resistance, and Presence. My character is short but nimble, and his anima banner is four golden arms that materialize and strike his foes as part of a stunt when he uses certain charms. Said arms are supposed to represent the four virtues and the Unconquered Sun's arms, and are totally not based on Asura's Wrath nope no sir.

I'm thinking something that would involve those four arms or include some sort of Athletics-ish move, like flipping over his enemy and then punching them in the face when they turn around. Any other suggestions?
>>
>>44935629
My character here >>44935950 only has one ambition: to save his twin brother, who used to be a really cool guy that may very well have become a Solar if he hadn't become an Abyssal.

I for one enjoyed HTH, Lightning Strikes Twice and Lightningbolt Attack Prana in a combo that ends in your enemy decending from the skies like a comet. So satisfying to finish someone like that.
>>
>>44935950
First basic idea to come to mind : since you're not basing this character on Asura's Wrath, I would advise not to steal from there again at all! Like your Anima-Arms and real arms fusing into a single pair of huge orichalcum arms burning with righteous scripture, that rings through the air as you deliver the double-fist hammer punch that is not your Thunderbolt Attack, then dissipate back to normal. Absolutely not appropriate.

Also there is no White Veil Society.

You know what, I think I won't take that to heart and I most certainly will not combine it with HTH to send my enemies flying.

Hey /exg/ I have a question regarding Transcendent Hero's Meditation, an integrity charm. To be brief, it's a charm that's activated when you're forced to go against an intimacy by some unnatural effect. It automatically detects and breaks whatever is controlling you, barring the Great Curse.

Could this charm be used to remove one's status as being akuma?
>>
>>44936607
>Could this charm be used to remove one's status as being akuma?

Not really, no. Becoming an Akuma is the result of the Yozi completely rewriting and rewiring you from the ground up, shuffling your abilities, attributes, and intimacies along. I mean, I guess in theory it could, if the Yozis decide to be really shitty and neglectful, along with pants on head retarded.

Someone who bought Rising Sun Slash, the pre-requisite charm that's only usable if you use a full Excellency. If you're in the habit of doing that, I think you'd need all the extra motes in combat you can get.

Presumably someone who also bought Perfect Strike Discipline, as another way to get those full melee excellencies without running out of motes.
>>
>>44939446
And if you're lucky, you got maybe two motes back. I'm not going to run the numbers, but considering you also need a 7, 8 and 9 in the roll then statistically you're not also rolling a ton of tens.
>>
Did the guy who made:
http://pastebin.com/0T2MxguZ
Ever update them?
>>
>>44939518
That sounds about right. Maybe 3, "if" you're using Excellent Strike (i.e. 1/9 of your dice are 10s) and "if" your Dexterity and Melee are maxed out. So you're reducing the cost of your excellency from 11 (8+3, Excellent Strike again) to 9 (Rising Sun Slash costs a mote).

Yeah, it could be a lot more generous with the mote return. Although I suspect if it did then that'd be a go-to Melee build. I'm not sure if Melee is already the skill that hits with the most accuracy, but being able to sustainably drop full excellencies on people would make it into that.

What Evocations could a Soulsteel Goremaul used by an overly zealous judge type have?
>>
>>44940050

You're gonna need more than that.

Zealous how? What actual code did he uphold (or not uphold)? Who did he punish and how? etc. etc.

Just like "he's the god of [x]" isn't enough to start with an Exigent, "it's [magical material] about [y]" isn't enough for Evocations. You basically have to write the artifact up like it's a character in of itself.
>>
>>44939893
Yeah right, like there's absolutely no Exalt ever in the Guild.

Might have joined under a false identity (but that not an obvious option what with Lunars being litteral shapeshifters, RIGHT). Might have joined before they Exalted and hid it from everybody (again, not at all something Lunars do sometimes, no siree).
>>
>>44939893
>>44940371
What? There are Exalts in the guild, they just can't be promoted past a certain point.
>>
>>44940371
Might've even had a very private audience with a couple of Guild factors and gone "Hey, wouldn't it be useful to have a Chosen of Luna as your ally? Just think of the possibilities!" The Guild would be unlikely to openly allow an Anathema to join them, but the Guild's also pretty good at doing things subtly and in secret.

The prohibition against Exalts joing the guild generally refers to Celestial Exalts.

So your Lunar would be sort of ineligible while DBs would be a-ok.

Really? Where does it say that?

>Could this charm be used to remove one's status as being akuma?
Without knowing how Akuma are going to work in 3e, I can't say for certain.

I don't know how it would work with 2e Akuma, either. Becoming an Akuma in 2e is such a thorough change to your personage that it's hard to say if you'd even still have your intimacy's after that point.

I've been away for a few months, do we know when the game or any of the next books are coming out yet?
>>
>>44942300

When they're done.

The backer PDF is out, and it probably won't change much between now and final for-real release, so in effect core is out. If you don't like the backer PDF the release probably won't change your mind.

I did read it and like it, I'm just wondering why it's taking so long. Again.
Remember the month of manually putting in the "see page XX"?

>the most basic Solar Medicine charm that even the most entry-tier Solar doctor could learn can cure the Great Contagion

Maybe they should've just killed the crazy First Age Solars and then trained the new crop of Solars and Lunars to not go fucking nuts?

Putting off the inevitable, doesn't stop something being inevitable.
>>
>>44942802
By the same standard, why have medicine at all. Death after all is inevitable.
>>
>>44942875
Death is neither inevitable nor the end.

Workings ensure that
>>
>>44942892
Workings can't make death any less inevitable, just more unlikely.
>>
>>44942790
>>44942875

The thing is, that Charm affecting the Great Contagion only makes sense if the Contagion itself isn't nearly as bad as presented.

Its actual mechanical effects (rolling to provide additional successes to a patient's Resistance roll) would only make a difference against the Contagion if it was only deadly because its Morbidity was 10 or something crazy (as opposed to having a Morbidity of N/A or "irrelevant because you autofail anyway")--and even then the Solar would be scraping for every success; he'd have to roll 10 extra successes over 10 to put the patient into difficulty 5 territory.

In manacle and coin it discusses the fact that guild factors are leery of placing power in the hands of any exalt because exalts tend to put themselves first instead of the guild. It's not that a celestial exalt couldn't join or even lead the guild, it's that they'd have to go through a lot of testing. Guild factors often fantasize about finding a Solar exalt who could be trusted to run the guild because they know that a Solar would make them more money than anyone had dreamed of.
>>
>>44943097
>finding a Solar exalt who could be trusted

Might as well fantasize that she'll have a hot twin sister for each council member, a forked tongue, and boobs the size of beachballs that lactate jade instead of milk.
>>
>>44943097
>put themselves first instead of the guild
Isn't the whole point of the Guild that everyone in it is in it for self-gain? The guild isn't a cause, it's a way to stack some cheddar.
>>
>>44943249

It's the difference between putting yourself first--and in doing so, ultimately advancing the Guild's overall ethos of hypercapitalism--and putting yourself first in such a way as to upend the capitalism in of itself.

When an Exalt puts themselves first, they do so as an institution, a government, an entire country and philosophy. Not as a single selfish gear in a broader device.
>>
>>44943216
...
Honestly, all of those are doable. Workings, man.

Probably (hopefully) art and the holidays.

>>44942790
>the most basic Solar Medicine charm...can cure the Great Contagion

It's 3m per patient, and if they ever stat the GC even a Solar will NEED to burn an Excellency to beat it. So the doctor's looking at spending somewhere in the ballpark of 13m per patient, per interval. He's *not* going to be able to keep the Great Contagion from devouring a city, but he will be able to save a handful or even a dozen of the people closest to him.

So what you're saying is, you need a Solar Exalt with sorcery?
>>
>>44943352

Yes, but no Solar's going to blow that much XP for the sake of others.

Wrong.

>>44929022
Double wrong.

There's a factor at play in all this that a lot of people who already play Exalted tend to miss: you already play Exalted.

The point of a line refresh is to attract new players. Unfortunately that is confounded when you have a line developer who behaves like a rampant asshat all over the internet. It's doubly hurt when a lot of his answers boil down to "the same as it was in previous editions." Which is not an acceptable answer when you're fielding questions about a new edition of the game.

Morke at least learned to shut the fuck up and answer directly or not at all.

But not before both of them piled up enough lies to make memes like "Ok Holden" and "Morke and Holden are liars" stick around.

Can't happen.

Immortality Has A Catch: Sorcery can make a character immortal, but never
in an unconditional, guaranteed fashion. There may be periodic rituals needed to
renew a character’s immortality, certain conditions under which he can die, a
regional restriction he cannot travel outside of without risking his immortality, or
similar. This does not mean that immortality is a trap or a waste of effort—
instead, the purpose of this is to preserve the relevance and power of death as a
dramatic element within the game, even if the players do bestow immortality to
all their friends, allies, and family.

That's the beauty of capitalism. You're free to help people as you want--just as long as the people your helping can make it advantageous for you.

>lactating jade
That'd better not be red
>>
>>44944680
No, no, here's the thing; 100% perfect immortality as long as he remains within a fixed area he can't be removed from that cannot be destroyed?

Fine. Let him hole up in his own prison, removed from the world. Bar the gates. Seal it in stone. Kill everyone he cares about that doesn't live in his sanctum. A character who has decided to stay in one place and never leave it has already decided to stop influencing the story. And if he has no one or nothing he cares about outside of his sanctum? Let him remain in there forever, then.

It's very, very easy to punish this kind of behavior; or rather, not punish it, but show how fruitless it would be.

Not that, but the system is inherently flawed, because it's premise encourages breaking the rules built around it. But this isn't pol and you really deserve a cokkie for that comeback, so I gonna bake some, what flavor?

nothin' wrong with Absolutely Safe Capsules

in fact, they might even like being trapped in a soundproof bubble with themselves and nothing else forever? Maybe? if they're misanthropic enough?

Is it just me or is a lunar taking a humans form kinda just worse than resplendent destines? Like for one you have to kill that person, which means you have to find a way to make it look natural as opposed to a sidereal just having them appear out of thin air, and then you have to worry about staying in character and not contradicting anything that person would normally do. And then when your done you cant just walk out as that generally raises eyebrows, you need to find a way to fake your death or something.
Im fine with sidereals just being better at this sort of thing but it means that i dont see much use in shape shifting as a social oriented lunar.

Resplendent Destinies can't be someone in particular. Lunar shapeshifting has the reverse. They're not really comparable powers even based on that.

A brilliant plan to live a life of unfathomable luxury:
1. Carefully stalk Guild Factor.
2. ???
3. Profit! It's what Guild Factors do!
