Hardcounters to Tron Edition

If you've been dead for the past few days, Splinter Twin and Summer Bloom have been banned. The police have left the city; we're Chicago now.

Is it basically required to have 4 Ghost Quarter in the side now? What decks are sleeping giants that are bound to make waves? Is Ad Nauseam still a meme?
>>
>>44875051
Blue Moon.
>>
I don't know what the answer is but I know the market thinks its Fulminator Mage
>>
I want to play a deck in Jeskai colors.
Is UWr control legit for FNM level of play?
>>
accidentally posted this in the last one but what would be the cost of building merfolk if i already have Aether viles? I am currently stuck between Merfolk or Instant Reanimator for what deck to play next.
>>
>>44875065

Your daily reminder that Tron is essentially a colorless deck, and that control decks can't close against it even if you shut off the ramp.

The Wurmcoils crawling up your ass don't care how many lands were tapped to play them, or what colour they were.

Tron is immune to discard and holds the best inevitability in the format. Spell Piercing a Karn or Ugin was only cheeky when you could punish them for tapping out with Twin the next couple turns. You're going to run out of countermagic long before he runs out of threats, and even if you don't you still have to win the game.
>>
>>44875051
stax/mud when?
>>
>>44875132
Soooooo what you're saying is I shouldn't bring Grixis control to a local tournament this Saturday. I should bring burn.
>>
>>44875132
Moving karn from turn 3 to turn 10 is a pretty decent thing to do. Pushing back wurm by almost that much is the same too. Also by the time engine comes down you'll practically be able to steal it with shackles.
>>
>>44875189

This is assuming you don't just flat out lose to a resolved Karn on T3, or he practically wins by popping a rock/floating mana and wiping it out with one of the half dozen options for artifact/enchantment removal Tron now has free.
>>
>>44875186
As someone that plays all flavours of grixis, definately take burn
>>
>>44875186
I am already dismantling my grixis and shifting to Jeskai Aggro. Take the burn List.
>>
Tfw loam pox is good in the meta. Tfw 8rack is also very well positioned.
>>
>>44875051
Ghost Quarter -> Surgical Extraction on one of the lands is the best I can do in Esper Control. That slows him down a lot and stops Emrakul from hitting the field. I can deal with Wurmcoil/Karn/Ugin/Newlamog if I have time to sculpt a hand and make land drops.

>>44875065
Blue Moon is a bad deck because aside from bouncing something with cryptic and then countering it again (probably with another cryptic because by the time you have the mana to do this Mana Leak will be dead) you can't deal with resolved threats that don't die to bolt. Grixis/UWR/Esper all have hard removal in the main and better sideboard options for noncreature permanents.
>>
Should I be picking up goblin gudes now? Been thinking about building burn lately.
>>
The the meta is aggro. Whatever you are doing make sure you can apply pressure and a clock. I forsee all decks changing this way.
>>
>>44875484
Should have picked them up during the hype after the MM2 announcement like I did. $55 for a playset, best decision I ever made.

>>

Infect is T1 now because it destroys Tron, what are you on about? Invigorate would make it the best deck in the format by far, you'd win T2 like 50% of games.
>>
>>44876395
Then why isn't it viable in legacy.
>>
>>44876368
>invigorate make infect viable

Infect was already viable. Invigorate would make it broken.

>>44876395
Not him, and I'm not saying Invigorate should be reprinted, but I really don't think the metagame is as simple as you think it is.

Spellskite is still a thing that gives Infect headaches, for example. Moreover, aggressive strategies was always Tron's worst ones. Twin on the other hand was pretty easy for Tron to deal with, especially near the end, and Twin did a lot to hose many aggressive strategies.
>>

Could you imagine if instead of unbanning Twin, they just declared Modern a T3 format, unbanned blue's toys, and reprinted Counterspell and Price?

Legacy Burn is already just Modern Burn + Price and duals, so it really wouldn't take much to get the aggro decks on a T3 clock.

This. I'd rather play a thousand Twin g2/3s than a single match vs burn or infect that rips the god draw.
>>
>>44877157
Why the two Unsummons? I get that you don't lose the life if you want to save one of your lords, but that seems very negligible while the extra damage a Snag gets in does not in an aggressive deck.

Is it worth it? I mean this seriously. Don't you have to burn an Angel's Grace to be safe? What happens if you hit Lightning Storm?
>>
>>44877519
It's a pretty solid tier2 deck. Great matchups against combo, alright against shardless. It's about 50/50 against Grub Delver.
>>
>>44878540
Spoils is always worth it. You just run two lightning storms and you're fine. If you end up having a really shitty spoils and exile like half of your deck and hit too many lands/spirit guides then you weren't going to win anyway.

Memedrazi seems like a horrible matchup for Ad Nauseam though. They run discard and can process our lotus blooms.
>>
>>44878612
I run 1 Conjurer's Bauble in the main; it's been clutch many times when I draw Storm and they Thoughtseize it. If I dump the Peer (I can't remember how many I run) should I add 1 Storm and 2-3 Spoils?

American Gifts may be a fun alternative. If an opponent taps out you Gifts EoT and reanimate Kiki-Jiki on Turn 5.

I guess it's time to let Twin rest or maybe see how the diehard Twin players have altered it for the Pro Tour and at my LGS. I'll talk to the numerous Twin players this Friday and see what changes they've made.

I hope a piece gets banned but it's hard to say which piece should. Maybe map should get banned, they can still use chromatics + stirring but can no longer get that reliable t3 7 mana.

Idk Trons fine if you play aggro though, god bless burn.
2 bloodmoons, 4 skullcracks in the sb, maybe some attarkas/dpalm/smashs.
If you can stop the wurmcoil's swing you're golden, pyroclasm doesn't hurt too much and Karn is pretty much a Raven's Crime vs it. Another way to stop the wurmcoil's lifegain is to chump block then burn your own creature. If you can stop that +6 life you'll win, if you can't, scoop that shit up because there's no way to race a wurmcoil.

>>44881287
Naya could still be strong if you sideboard properly, it's got white for leylines/paths, and red for aggro and land destruction and dank green creatures. It loses to combo pretty hard though, since it's not as fast as burn (which puts combo on a very short clock) and the midrange aspect of it fails to tron's midgame. Its not quite a rock or a paper or a scissors, rather it's like a paper-thin rock I guess. Still good but not 'meta'

Hey bros, quick question:

If I Path a Reality Smasher and I have a Loxdon Smiter in my hands, can I chuck down the Smiter for free when I try to discard it?

Yeah

It kills blood moon and spreading seas as well as creatures, I'd say it's an easy keep to be sideboarded out in some matchups

Best part of owning of MDN Merfolk and Vintage Grixis Thieves. I have the option of playing legacy merfolk because I own 4 True Names.

>BTW:
LGC Merfolk are doing badly because of the high rates of Storm, and Miracles.
Miracles (Counter on 2 + Terminus) = Bad Games
Storm (T1/T2 kills through the only permission FoW. Even chalices are not enough to make the matchup better).

BACK TO MODERN:
I LOVE MY FISHES IS A MODERN FORMAT THAT IS LACKING A SOLID HAY MAKER AGAINST THEM.

>>
>>44882044
Pack Rat is amazing dude
>>
>>44881901

Son...
>>
>>44882068
You don't really want TKS and Smasher in a processor build. They go in a different type of deck
>>
>>44882068
So then link a list.
>>
>>44882044
i have played 8rack for a year straight, first build was 35$ and built up to the complete version. For budget version i dont recommend pack rats because you do need sac and play smallpox aggresively on turn two. When you have the complete full built list i recommend adding packrats and taking out smallpox for lilianas. I still have 4 smallpox in the sideboard where liliana is too slow like burn for example and taking one of their lands is very important.

Ghost Quarter is superior to Tectonic Edge
Ghost Quarter:
+Pop Anytime
+They receive a basic land (if you hit tron with multiple Ghost Quarters they get time walked)
+Super Useful
Tectonic Edge:
-Requires opponent to have four or more lands (remember modern is a T4 format)

4 Lodestone Golem

4 Expedition Map

4 Chalice of the Void

4 Mox Opal ("free" mana"

# Sol Lands
# Tron Lands

Are there sol ring effects in modern to make the deck viable? Then again T3 going tron + Mox Opal into double lodestone golem (Legacy MUD esque).
>>
>>44882916
Most people with exception to burn, and merfolk run only 2-4 basic lands.

If they fetch out [OR] play T1 basic then they are essentially down to 1-3.

But this was... I want to say before Deathrite Shaman was a card? It was definitely a few years ago so of course I got mine at a good price. Burn back then was not quite the shit stomper it is now.
>>
>>44881851
About $80 and it was Mono-Blue tron. Still need Chalice of the Void, but besides that it is done.
>>
Everyone talks about these eldrazi decks but I never see any lists linked. Whats the win condition even?
>>

>>
>>44883011
80? Does your list contain oboro, ugin and urborg (the later for dismember and sunderino shenanigans)
>>
>>44883111
Big fucking creatures hitting your opponent in the face
Processor lists run Ulamog as a finisher
>>
>>44883114

>>
>>44882875

>>
>>44883122
Yup, opened 1 Ugin at pre-release and traded for another. Urborg had some from 2015 or whenever it was reprinted and Oboro is cheap or was when i got it. The most expensive thing were the Wurmcoil engines and O-stones.
>>
>>44880798
BGx is pretty safe, there's nothing dominant about it and blows ass in the new meta
>>
>>44883129
When I see the deck in action it seems like Ulamog is rather redundant in the deck. Often Blight Herders or Sowers will have taken over the game by themselves, and UB lists also have Drowner to keep potential blockers away.
>>
>>44883331
That's why the future is tempo lists with Smasher and TKS as win conditions
>>
>>44883111
http://magic.tcgplayer.com/db/deck_search_result.asp?Format=Modern

Just look for eldrazi in the name.

>Whats the win condition even?
Usually pounding face with fatties pumped out quickly thanks to processing or RotE lands. Oblivion Sower in tandem with the eye of ugin and eldrazi temple help ramp up for newlamog as well. Once oath drops, I can see a lot of decks not even bothering with ramping with oblivion sower and instead gain tons of value from thought-knot seer, reality smasher and eldrazi mimic and the like.
>>
>>44880896
Affinity, Infect and Burn are only safe because they take up the same niche in the meta as aggro decks, meaning that the meta is already diverse as far as Wizards are concerned because more than one aggro deck is viable.

Hopefully they learned their lesson after banning Nacatl though, that when just one type of aggro deck is played it might be because its the only aggro deck that can deal with the other decks in the format.

You're almost right. Splinter twin was designed to be a combo piece. It was released in the block just prior to Scars of Mirrodin. You know, the block Deceiver Exarch was printed in. They were fully aware of the interaction between the two.

[Check] Resto your wall of omens in long grindy games

[Check] Beats other control decks

Negative:
Pilot heavy deck. Bad pilot equals bad losses.

That was the point. Every color gets to slam a 6/6 for 6 with added abilities and the ability to 2-1 your opponents removal.

>>
>>44883881
Not to mention you get to sphinx's rev for 15. Also, main board board wipes.
>>
>>44883952

4 Raven's Crime
4 Wrench Mind

Reminder that not even my RUG Loam meming could withstand these bans and I'm bailing out of the game save for a couple EDH decks and Miracles. Wizards are too erratic and contradictory. >>

>it seems real good with a solid opening hand, but it's otherwise dead weight

That's because all you're doing is brewing yet another inconsistent combo deck. If you make the deck more consistent and/or faster than existing combo decks, then congratulations, all you've done is speed the format up without addressing the format's absolutely horrendous archetype imbalance.
