Its retardedness is part of its charm. The characters' motivations don't make perfect sense, the world around them has all sorts of weird contrivances both in their favor and against them, and the setting itself just seems to be their to give them a place to adventure in... but all of those little quirks just make it feel even more like a D&D campaign. It may bring back memories from your first campaign -- I know it did for me.
You know how in the first season, Lina can't use powerful magic when she's on her period? I like to imagine that that'sthe DM's way of preventing her from spamming Dragon Slave.
Think like that. Try to come up with a meta-narrative about the players. Lina is the min-maxing powergamer who nonetheless remembers as much of the fluff as she does of the crunch, Zelgadis is the edgy brooding guy who would probably be happier playing World of Darkness, and Gourry is the guy who has trouble paying attention when it isn't his turn and knows nothing at all about the game, but nonetheless has the time of his life. It makes the show lots of fun.Oh yeah, and Xellos is the DMPC.You really get attached to the characters more that way.Except for Xellos, fuck that guy.

I´ve only seen a few minutes of the German dub. Sounds promising. Lots of personality and emotion. Gaudy has a weird voice... Too soft. He seems to be dubbed by a very manly woman or a trans. All in all, fairly easy to understand. Should be a nice step up from Avatar.
